This is one of the best chinese spots in the area, which is disappointing because my lo mein had a metal shard in it seemingly from a steel brillo pad. This could have been extremely dangerous and life threatening had i swallowed it. I contacted the restaurant and they apologized, but I honestly won't be back. How is this place still in business? I ate here twice and both times had a terrible experience. The first time, there was hair in my food. Gross. The second time (yes, I returned, I know, I'm crazy) there was a metal staple. Yep, you read that right, a STAPLE, you know, the thing that holds papers together? For some reason, it's so hard to find a good Chinese take-out place here in NJ. I didn't have high hopes for Bean Curd but the food here isn't so bad. Let me clarify that this is American Chinese food, not real authentic Chinese food so people need to adjust their expectations. But for American Chinese take-out, this is better than others I've tried. We dined in on a Sunday afternoon and the place was empty. Service was nice and attentive. We ordered a bunch of main entrees and everything came out fresh and steaming hot. The best one was probably the Jumbo Shrimp. The least favorite was the sesame chicken, which was oddly prepared because it looked like giant chicken meatballs. They also have parking spots outside which is a plus. Beef chow fun had fresh noodles and quality beef. Ma po tofu was perfectly spicy and savory with silky soft tofu. They do not understand customer service, they messed-up my order on two dishes. Then I go back to get my correct dish, sesame chicken and when I tried to eat it, it was chewy and tough. When I called to inform them, they informed me that I have to bring this dish back if I wantes a refund. Though I just brought back the incorrect dish before hand. It's with heavy heart that I write this, as Bean Curd was my go to for many decades-in fact the first date with my ex wife was there, and that was over 30 years ago! But the food has gone downhill, and the room needs updating. Threadbare carpet. A cracked windowpane 'repaired' with Scotch tape. Cutlery and dishes likely original. Painted window mullions where the paint was never removed from the glass. Dust everywhere. Slow service. My appetizer was served 15 minutes before dad's. We stopped by for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Our expectations weren't too high but the food was pretty good. We ordered the steamed pork dumplings, pork fried rice and Sesame chicken. The steamed dumplings were soft and had good flavor to them. The pork fried rice tasted fresh, wasn't too oily (was surprisingly light) and had a decent portion size too. The sesame chicken was definitely the best of the three. It was made with fresh white meat and was more crispy than any ordinary sesame chicken I have experienced in the past. After the new owners took over this place where we were regulars for 30 years, we had several bad experiences. So we skipped Bean Curd, which had become as easy as eating at home for us, for 3 years. So sad. We decided to give it a go tonight, Wednesday March 30. TERRIFIC. Great service and food. No, this is not haute cuisine, but for a tasty well prepared and presented meal with nice service for a weekday night, can't be beat. So happy to put Bean Curd back in our "rotation". We went on (hopefully) what was an off day, but I am not sure I will be revisiting the restaurant any time soon. I've enjoyed their food before, but probably before they changed management. The menu is limited in description, but pay attention the the chow mein section (I have included a photo for reference). There are no noodles even though mein means noodles so we unintentionally received a gluten free meal with a side of disappointment. If you want noodles, order either the lo mein or the chow fun. the new owners have allowed what was once an amazing restaurant with incredible dumplings made by Grandma at the table in the back (they were amazing), turn into a place i will never eat at again. i just ordered their moo shoo beef (almost no beef was in it) along with dumplings which were terribly disappointing, we ordered chicken fried rice which was overly greasy and sweet and sour chicken which was entirely dark meat. I would actually give this place zero stars. We stopped in for a quick lunch and may I say it was the worst Chinese food I believe I have ever had. Soggy, inedible eggroll. Bland wonton Soup, but highly salty. Mushy steamed dumplings. Brown rice that appeared to be left overs from the day before. For a seafood udon soup, the seafood was the fake crab used in California's rolls. I paid the bill but told the server and greeter how awful their food was and while I paid, I will never return. Sometimes the food is bad. Sometimes it's really good. Out of the last 10 times, 5 times the food was okay, 2 times it was great, 2 times it was bad (flavors, sauces, ingredients were different or unusual), and the last time we couldn't finish the food. Set in a small space with large windows, this pretty restaurant is a very relaxing spot to sit and enjoy lunch. There are trees in front of the windows lit up with lights and each table has its own separate space. The food is well prepared. For example, I ordered the General Tso's chicken and it was big chunks of white meat chicken with a coating, not slathered in sauce like at most places. The fried rice to the side was not greasy, but light. For $7.50 I got a complete meal. Starting off with Hot and Sour soup (mushroom, bean curd), next arrived my entree, which was General Tso's chicken with fried rice. Both were nice portions, not small. The drinks we had came with the meal, being ice water and a pot of jasmine tea. Refills were available. In other words, both the pot of tea and the water were refilled. The service was very attentive and even supplied us with an extra bowl of those crunchy noodles which came with hot mustard and duck sauce. Very relaxing place to go for a lunch. read more

When I first moved to the area I looked for the local spots and found this place tucked on a corner in mid Chatham. This place is a throwback to Chinese places that serviced Americans but still maintain a "little" authenticity. I say little because their food is a little greasy, and plenty salty. You have better luck with healthy fair at the China Chalet in Florham Park. Ambiance is not the reason to go to this place and parking here is a bit of a puzzle. The building sits angled on the property and the parking lot is just weird. Don't park in the big labeled space because it is for the manager. The Manager seems to be the kid of the original owners because he is kind of arrogant "business school type" who mommy and daddy's sweat put him through and now he has no choice but to run the family business. The waiters and staff are ancient but they are attentive. I am sure they must love dealing with this "twit", the manager that is. Also these people don't take American Express which "irks" me to no end. Now about the food, good but greasy. Also they could tone down the salt a little. One of my favorite dishes is the pork in Beijing sauce which used to be Peking sauce. The only thing is they put broccoli instead of a generous portion of scallions as should be served. The portion is also undersized for the price, but then again you are in Chatham and the area breeds its own issues (arrogance, elitism, self-interest, hypocrisy, exclusion, greed). My husband, friends, and I have been going to the Bean Curd for over 20 years (yikes) and have yet to find a better Chinese restaurant in the area. The food may be a little on the greasy side, but we don't eat there everyday. Over the years the portions have been reduced and prices raised like everything else, but it still remains our go-to place. Since we go there so often, the owners know us and give us extra stuff like cut-up pineapple in addition to the usual fortune cookies. He said the order would take 30 mins...a concern although it was busy. When I picked up the food, I noticed the place is small. Located on a corner lot, the parking is confusing (if you find a spot). For a General Tso's dinner, fried meat dumplings and shrimp Lo Mein dinner for over $35???? I didn't realize it was so expensive until I got home. They don't even package it in a nice package. They put everything in a white take out box. No napkins, no utensils, no extra sauce...what the heck??? The price they charge it should be in those nice microwavable containers...Now to the meal itself. 1. The general Tso's was rubbery, non spicy (none at all), no flavor and drenched in their sauce. Terrible. 2. The dumplings were all dough and virtually no meat inside. For what I could taste meat wise, it seemed decent. 3. It makes me wonder whether some people have ever tasted good Chinese food. We ordered things that other yelpers recommended. We started with the egg drop wonton combo. It was devoid of flavor. We followed with the scallion pancake. It was very thick and we thought it was odd that they brought a bowl of sauce so enormous that you could swim in it. But once I tasted the pancake, I understood. It was also totally bland, and we had to dunk the whole thing in the sauce to give it some flavor. Then we had the mu shu pork, and an order of general tso's chicken. I would normally not order general tso's, but again I trusted the reviews. It was not crispy at all, and some of the pieces, I actually spit out because there was so much gristle! The only edible item all night was the mu shu. It was... fine. We won't be coming back, in fact, the only reason we went was because the nearby Taste of Asia was having a private party. If you're in the neighborhood, steer clear if this place and walk a block to Taste of Asia, that place has never let me down. read more

I had late lunch/early dinner on a Sunday and the place was pretty empty. I guess that may be because of the odd time I showed up. But that did not matter, the staff was friendly and took care of us quickly. I had their version of Kung Pao chicken with extra chilis. It was spicy and delicious. For the life of me, I can't understand why this place has been in Chatham as long as it has. Just stopped in last week and the food is (still) entirely unremarkable. I got crispy chicken (and alas, no option for dark meat is offered) with sesame sauce, and I'm guessing the chicken was frozen and popped right into the fryer. That's not a total deal breaker, but the sauce was equally bad -- bland and overly sweet. My sister got the General Tso's and both were basically just sugar syrups. The scallion pancakes were unremarkable. Believe it or not, the hole-in-the-wall take-out place down the street, Garden Rice, is superior in pretty much every way. read more
