The Bean Curd is a model of consistency. The same hostess, the same waiters, the same food. I've given three stars and as I write this I'm trying to imagine the things that would set a Chinese restaurant apart. I had the sizzling go-bar, one of my favorites. Unfortunately, this place is just a more "upscale" version of Chinese-American food. I was hoping for more authentic Chinese fare but once I saw general tso's chicken as a house specialty...my expectations were lowered. The service was very poor as it took 20 min for us to order...and that was after asking twice to order. My wife and got the house chicken special and shredded beef in spicy sauce. The food was very bland and had no spice despite telling them to make it extra spicy. The only good part of the meal were the steamed meat dumplings and complementary tea. Great Chinese restaurant in the heart of Chatham. We loved this place. It's an absolute favorite of ours, and my children like to repeat every week. We come from a place where Chinese cuisine is almost a national food, and this place is nothing less. The service is fast and the waiter knows us and is very kind and accommodating with our orders. Take out works pretty well, always on time and in good amounts. General Tso chicken is one of my favorite dishes, but we also love the black bean chicken or beef, and the sweet and sour chicken. This is my favorite Chinese food restaurant anywhere near me (probably my favorite ever). I've gone here since I was a kid and I continue to go back. When the previous owner Helen sold the place I was really disappointed with the new owner and the food. I stayed away for months. Recently I went back for lunch and it was quite good. Had another few lunches, all very good and the put it back in rotation for dinner. The cold sesame noodles are the best in the area! The broccoli with garlic sauce is better than before, less oily and richer subtle flavors not too spicy. Overall meal was pretty average. We ordered wonton soup, egg drop soup, moo shu pork, and beef with string bean. Everything was okay, but not memorable. The moo shu and beef could have both had more meat. Servers were friendly but not the most attentive. In terms of ambiance, the space could be much cleaner and a bit less cluttered. read more

I was first at this restaurant 32 years ago, when I was almost a week old. Since then, I've been a regular. Even when I've moved several states, from Massachusetts to Georgia(currently in Georgia), I always a make a point to come, and have so for years. First came here back 30 years or more when I lived in the area. Was kinda trendy then with nice decor, vegetarian offerings, brown rice. Been back a few times over the years. Still nice. Lunch special inexpensive for the area and quite decent. Probably wouldn't make a long trip to go to, but was glad I came here today. Broccoli in garlic sauce excellent and actually garlicky. It was my first time trying this restaurant, so I looked up their menu before I place an order for a pick up. First of all, their lunch price on the website is outdated. First disappointment. It says $6.95 lunch special but they charged me almost $10. The soup was only a half full, not enough veggies nor meat in hot&sour soup. Maybe they were running low on soup? There goes my second disappointment. I ordered chicken in spicy garlic sauce, it tasted good but salty, and I feel like it wasn't enough meat compared to the rice. 2/3 of the container was rice.. Solid old school Americanized Szechuan Chinese food. Complimentary tea and awesome lunch specials. This place is called bean curd- try the tofu dishes. It's Szechuan- try the Szechuan dishes. Come on people. I don't get the other reviews. No, it's not super authentic but it also doesn't purport to be... Yes, the service can be slow but there's a limit to what one person can do. The service is actually good, attentive, and sincere. The guy is seriously ping ponging back and forth and never stops. He doesn't deliberately or negligently take a long time. He's just busy. Don't be a jerk or short his tip because of it. Have some common sense yelpers. Oh, and the atmosphere is nice. Trees and plants are real and a nice touch. We've been eating there since they first opened over 30 years ago (same family running it throughout). This remains our favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. The food is always good. Dishes are never overly salty or greasy. My favorites are the twice cooked pork, the chicken with eggplant and the mixed vegetables. My son likes the General's Chicken and my daughter the scallion pancakes. But really everything we order there is always good, as is the service. The food is ok. SERVICE is HORRIBLE. Went there on two occasions. The lady who owns the place is absolutely crazy. Went for lunch both times. On my first visit I requested hot & sour soup without egg and she made me feel like I asked for caviar from the island of Manhattan. I told her no worries. As my friend I are eating our main course they slap the bill on our table and said "done"??!!! Who does that? and the place was half empty! Second occasion: I requested for Ma Pa style chicken. She came out almost yelling saying no no no.. no Ma Pa chicken. Only Ma Pa tofu, I said no problem I do not want tofu so what do you suggest. She said bean curd chicken. As I was clear that I do not want tofu, I assumed she is saying bean curd style chicken.. When I got the dish it was 80% tofu and two pieces of chicken. I kindly asked the waiter as to why I have tofu in my dish... Here came the dracula barging from the back yelling and points an inch from my food "this is tofu, this is chicken" .. I said I want a chicken dish.. she said "no no no.. this is chicken this is tofu" it was very uncomfortable. almost ridiculous.. she said "you said this you said this... I charge you $10 for next dish.... chicken in garlic !!! you want to pay? you want to pay"? I told her that is fine.. 10 seconds later the same exact dish came out smaller in portion and without tofu.... just beyond me at this point... I obviously never ate it and left it on the table....They never asked If I wanted it to go or if their was anything they can do.. they just slapped the bill on the table and left... Needless to say I will be disputing the bill.. and I hope you save your money and go elsewhere.. TRY CHiNA CHALET in Florham Park instead. read more
