I was looking for a new place to eat and put in Indian food on Yelp. The recommendation came up for Mumbai Tadka and I can't wait to tell you how awesome it was! The staff was incredible! They were so friendly and accommodating. They answered all our questions and told us great stories abut the artwork. It's BYO but they have many options for beverages. Hubby got the mango orange punch which was refreshing and delicious. We ordered the samosa chaat which I liked because they were smaller and not overly filling so I can enjoy my food while enjoying the crunchy goodness. They came with 2 sauces - both excellent! We also got the beet root tikki chaat appetizer. I had the chicken tikka in medium sauce which was seasoned to perfection. The garlic naan was an excellent accompaniment. Hubby had the Chana Masala which were chick peas in a tangy onion and tomato based masala sauce. Our friend who is a vegan veg Kolhapuri which is spicy mixed vegetables in a coconut based kolhapuri style curry. He loved it! It is such a quaint and cozy place. Very good southern Indian restaurant. The samosas were fairly small, but only $5 for 3. Kobi Manchurian was good. I thought a bit heavy on the breading, but others really loved the flavor. For entrees, we got the butter chicken, chicken tikka, paneer tikka, salmon tandoori, and malai kofta. Everything was delicious except the salmon which was beyond dry and overcooked! Garlic and cheese naans were very good. Strange thing is that they served all of this food with the smallest portion of basmati rice... Fun to try the ras malai dessert! Beautiful presentation. This place had good reviews, so we drove the 40 minutes one way to try the food. We really enjoyed it. About a month later (last week), we tried again as take-out for our anniversary. The second time, the dishes were oily like at a cheap Indian restaurant. Certainly not worth making a trip for. Additionally, before leaving I told them to be sure we had everything because we weren't local. They swore we did and we checked the bag and it looked like everything was there. 40 minutes later at home, we found 1 naan missing. I called and they wanted me to make the 80 minute round trip to get it. I told them to refund the amount and they put up a lot of resistance, then agreed. They never gave the refund. Yeah thanks for a nice anniversary. There are so many better options in NJ than dealing with this strip mall level restaurant. read more

Congratulations! Twas the night before a blizzard and it was like the place was filled by three celebrations of droves of people!! I discretely left as they had no open seats but wow was I happy for them. I was curious as to whether it was an Indian holiday I was unaware of so I went over to that other place in Berkeley Heights and it was completely empty. I stood in the freezing empty dining room for ten minutes and by the time the head waiter came out, only to wait more - he saw me - and then just struck up a long conversation with someone picking up take out. We had awesome experience last week, so we went back to Mumbai Tadka again to try other dishes. For appetizers, we ordered beetroot tiki chaat. Beetroot tikies in the chaat were soft and tasty, served with Chana, tomatoes, onions, tamarind chutney, coriander chutney with mild spices and garnishing. It was perfectly spiced and delicious. For main course, we ordered Malai kofta again, Bhindi masala, vegetable Biryani, and Butter Naan. Again Malai kofta were soft and delicious with gravy made from Khoya and not from heavy cream. Bhindi masala were awesome, because they were not combination of half cooked onions and half cooked okras, but actually well cooked small okra pieces with finely chopped onions and special combination of spices that made them different from other restaurants. Bhindi masala were out of this world!!!!! Naan were perfectly buttered and soft. Onion and fresh green chili salad was prepared freshly and topped with chat masala to add flavor. Biriyani was cooked with mild spices and combination of several vegetables, topped with fried crunchy onions. I liked it because I did not taste patthar ke phool in the biriyani. It tasted like authentic Indian Biriyani. I personally do not prefer taste of patthar ke phool. For desert, I ordered Rasmalai. Rasmalai seemed freshly prepared on the premise. It was not too sweet and did not have cardamom or nuts on the top, but instead it was topped with dry red rose petals. I think it was nut less so people with allergies to nuts may be able to enjoy after thorough inquiry regarding the nuts. My overall experience again was awesome. I highly recommend this restaurant. We had the MOST DELICIOUS dinner! Rogan Josh, Garlic Naan, Tawa Chicken and Kolpuri vegetables. Its a big menu if you take into account the different types of combinations you can make. We started with the Chinese Pakoda, Schezwan Gobi, and Lasooni Gobi. Everything was great, seasoned well. From the moment we walked in, everyone was gracious and welcomed us. The service was friendly, prompt, and informative. They made fabulous suggestions. We got a lassoni gobi to start, ehich was visciously spicy in the best way. The goat malabar was tender, rich, nutty and so flavorful. The chicken kohapuri was herbascious and delicately spice. I was a nearly lifelong customer of Caffe India in Morristown (even when it was still called Chand Palace). So since they've closed I've felt a little lost trying to find a good local replacement.
