We ordered pick up on a Saturday night and the wait wasn't bad at all. We were promised the food within 25 minutes and they came through with the order on time! Unfortunately, there's no online portal to order the pick up so we had to do it over the phone, but the woman we spoke to was very nice and patient. The restaurant was packed. Every table was taken and there was a wait outside with about 15 to 20 people, hoping for a table. I ordered the Pork, Shrimp & Spinach Dumplings and Shrimp Stir-Fried Noodles. The dumplings we of decent size and very tasty. The green color definitely stands out. The noodles were a little thicker than you typically get when you order lo mein. The bowl was also a decent size but the shrimp were small. The container held the moisture well and the dish wasn't spicy, which gets a thumbs up from me. I wish I could give this place a 4.5 stars. Really really happy with my experience here, definitely coming back ASAP! Service was very attentive and quick. Multiple staff members checked on us continuously throughout our experience. Ambiance is laid back -- you can really dress up or down, whatever you want. There's lots of seats, table booth or bar! We walked in with no rez on a Thursday and were seated immediately, and done in about an hour. The food is insane! I got vegan dumplings, and had some garlicky green beans and edamame and they were all fantastic. I want to try the vegan wontons next. My family raved about the pork fried rice and orange chicken. Stopped by Ugly Dumpling in Morris Plains and ended up with about a 2-hour wait, which was definitely the biggest downside of the night. It was pretty packed, so clearly the place is popular, but be prepared if you're planning to go during peak times. We started with the spicy chicken wontons, which unfortunately weren't spicy at all. The flavor itself was fine, but the dish didn't really live up to its name if you're expecting any real heat. The highlight was the Ugly Dumpling Sampler. My friend is a goodie and like to try new places. This outpost of the small ugly dumpling chain is undertaking a "soft" opening but heated to try it. To our surprise, the services was good (Hugh was great) and the food was also a surprise. My friend has pork buns and gave them 8 out of 10, comparing them to his favorites in Chinatown. We both had a fantastic dish, sesame noodles. This was a generous serving, At $9 a bargain and a dish that will bring me back. This is definitely a welcome addition to Morris Plains! I think it's one of the first dim sum style eateries to open in the area. We're here for it! The space is large and inviting. There's an open air dining room, a bar area with seats and lots of private booths in the back. You can also find a wide selection of soups, rices and noodle dishes, meat entrees, veggie sides and much more. What we tried: + Garlic beans. A MUST. So flavorful and a big hit with my kids. + Braised beef noodle soup. The soup itself was extremely flavorful, and it came with lots of noodles and meat. The actual meat was a bit hard and dry. I wish it was pulled instead of whole. + Pork soup dumplings. This is their signature item and they definitely delivered. + BBQ Pork Buns. Fluffy perfection. A little heavy on the dough, but the filling was delicious. + Chicken fried rice. This is a good kids dish since it's pretty bland, and it came with lots of large chunks of white meat chicken. We gave this place a try and it was pretty decent. I ordered so many different items because I wanted to try it all! I got the soup dumpling which was a first time for me having it. I also Got the pork dumpling which are steamed ( I prefer fried) and the Mongolian beef with white rice. I prefer the beef to be a bit crispy and this wasn't. Great new place in Morris Plains! It just opened a few days ago and we loved stopping in for dinner. Our waiter was fabulous, the hostess was super friendly and the staff came over often to check in on us too. Finally got to check out Ugly Dumpling in Morris Plains. Went here for lunch because every time we tried going for dinner there was a long wait. The decor was nice and modern, you can even see the dumplings being made through a glass window. We ordered Ugly Bao Bun, Salt & Pepper Popcorn Chicken, Noodles with Sesame Sauce and finally the Soup Dumplings (Szechuan Pork). Walter our server was friendly and attentive. I had been waiting for Ugly Dumpling to open and was excited to finally check it out. They have a location in Edison, but this was my first time dining with them. The interior is beautiful and surprisingly spacious, with plenty of seating. One of the standout features is the exhibition window where you can watch dumplings being hand-made which adds to the uniqueness of the restaurant. My table ordered the soup dumpling sampler, beef noodles, steamed BBQ pork buns, spicy wontons, and stir-fried green beans. The soup dumplings were flavorful and satisfying when eaten hot but once they cool down, the wrapper loses some elasticity and becomes slightly doughy, so timing matters. I'm going to give them some time to make adjustments, but overall the flavor profile was solid. The beef noodles were my favorite dish. The beef was chunky and super tender, and the noodles had great texture. The broth leaned slightly simple and a touch too sweet for my preference, but adding the chili oil at the table gave it more depth and balance. Even so, it's something I would be happy to order again. The rest of the dishes were consistently good, not necessarily "best in class," but well executed and enjoyable. Overall, the food was simple and tasty, and the dish prices were reasonable. While none individually stood out as extraordinary, the consistency, ambiance, and service came together to create a delightful experience. In that sense, Ugly Dumpling embodies the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The woman took my name and phone number, I then said let me call back bc I want to make sure pickup will be on time for when the food is ready (she said it'd be ready in 20 min). I called back at 6:14 and someone else answered saying they don't take takeout orders after 5pm on a Friday. ?????? Why didn't the first person who picked up the phone abide by that policy. We ordered takeout from Ugly Dumpling, and enjoyed some items, but probably won't return for others. We were really impressed when we walked in, as the ambiance of the restaurant is lovely, and I would definitely enjoy dining-in on one occasion. While we waited for our food we ordered a boba tea, and the server behind the drink counter was very helpful and friendly. The boba tea was very mediocre, especially for the steep price, as it was quite watery, small and the boba were a bit soggy. We eventually got our food, which consisted of braised beef soup, the soup dumpling sampler, and the pork & crab soup dumplings. The braised beef soup was average, and could have had more meat/veggies and been less salty. The soup dumpling were also average, as the dough was a bit thick and chewy. I did not enjoy the pork and crab dumplings at all, and I usually like these, as they tasted very fishy. The dumpling sampler was similarly average, minus the truffle dumpling, which I really enjoyed. It was extremely juicy and flavorful. We also shared a few other dishes, including the cucumber salad, which was refreshing and well seasoned, the popcorn chicken which was crispy and packed with flavor, and the stir-fried rice which paired perfectly with everything else. We also tried the tonkotsu ramen, and the broth was rich and comforting with great depth of flavor. My favorite appetizer was the cream cheese crab rangoons, and the desserts were just as memorable. We had never been to this restaurant before so our waiter made some recommendations which was helpful. The food is served family style so when its done it comes out. Everything was delicious. The pork belly was so tender and it was like eating it on a cloud. The soup dumplings were tender and delicious and fun to eat. It just opened a few weeks ago and you would have no idea. They are already running so smoothly. We sat at the bar since it is first come first serve and it honestly made the experience even better. Our server Paulina was so friendly and knowledgeable and walked us through the entire menu. In the middle of the restaurant is the bao lab where you can see the cooks making the bun, dumplings and wontons! Very cool ambiance. I started with the mango black tea and my boyfriend the peach green tea which was freshly brewed and super refreshing. The cucumber salad had the perfect light kick even for someone who does not like spicy food. The ugly bao with pork belly was excellent with a fluffy bun and perfectly cooked pork. The BBQ pork buns were also fluffy and flavorful, though I would have liked a bit more filling. I highly recommend the soup dumpling sampler. My favorites were the pork and truffle, pork shrimp and spinach, and chicken. Each had flavorful broth and light airy dumplings. My boyfriend enjoyed the spicy chicken wontons but would have preferred a little less sauce. The pork fried rice was a standout and I would go back just for that.
