This new spot is so fun and cool! I went for dinner with my family, and we tried so much of the menu since everything is shareable. Our server helped us understand how the menu works and that all the food will come out as it's prepared, not necessarily at the same time. We got the Fried Chicken Dumplings (a major winner), the Pork and Truffle Soup Dumplings (if you can get past the black dough, it's a real treat) and the Chicken Soup Dumplings (a crowd pleaser). There are instructions on the table for how to eat the soup dumplings, but we still all kind of made a mess. Still, it was fun. We also tried the Orange Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Green Beans with Garlic, Edamame, Noodles with Chicken and the French Fries. Everything was truly delicious. Service was wonderful. I asked Google for a recommendation for someplace to have lunch which was highly rated en route from Greenville, NY to home in southcental Pennsylvania, and this popped up as the number one option. I was traveling on the sunday of Labor Day weekend and needed a good stretch rather than a "starvation stop", having arrived at approximately 1:30pm. The shopping center in which it was situated was a bid crowded with vehicles, but not hideously so.I was greeted and immediately seated. The ambience was rather noisy and clearly not playing asian music, however I'm not offering that as a complaint. I decided upon reasonably light fare by choosing the vegetable stir fry. My server arrived within 5 minutes of my seating during which time i studied the menu selections. After my meal arrived he provided me with recommendations for adding the table condiments which gave in a fine touch and which was much appreciated. The restaurant is deceiving large, which rather surprised me. No outdoor seating such as the restaurant next door, and alcohol is byob. Restroom cleanliness is important to me as i personally believe that a clean restaurant restroom correlates with kitchen and staff hygiene. The walls and ceiling were black with a Grey floor, one toilet, one urinal, and a spacious sink. I did need to beckon my server for my check, however in his defense, the restaurant was rather busy. My total was $15.44 which included a 22% tip. Overall, a positive culinary experience for me. Texture was a satisfying snap. Green beans were fried green beans with garlic. We paid an extra $2 for the spicy sauce. I'm not sure what it would've been like without the sauce so I cannot really tell you to pay that fee or not. It tasted like fried green beans. Excellent texture with no squeaks on bite. The steamed chicken dumplings were soft and meaty. A lot of substance in the dumpling. Came with a dumpling sauce that I thought was pretty tasty but not particularly novel. My hosts treated me to lunch here this Sunday and I'm glad they did. Delicious food and generous serving. Our table had the braised beef noodles soup, pork shrimp and spinach soup dumplings, the dumplings sampler, chicken fried rice, pork soup dumplings and the pork Bao. All delicious. Food was delivered promptly without a long wait despite the place being about 70% occupied. Server was helpful and checked on us regularly without being intrusive. My friend is a goodie and like to try new places. This outpost of the small ugly dumpling chain is undertaking a "soft" opening but heated to try it. To our surprise, the services was good (Hugh was great) and the food was also a surprise. My friend has pork buns and gave them 8 out of 10, comparing them to his favorites in Chinatown. We ordered pick up on a Saturday night and the wait wasn't bad at all. We were promised the food within 25 minutes and they came through with the order on time! Unfortunately, there's no online portal to order the pick up so we had to do it over the phone, but the woman we spoke to was very nice and patient. The restaurant was packed. They forgot to clean our table as it was building up empty dishes and small trash items and didn't take the menus off the table to make space, but that's a small detail. Food was overall very good. The decor was nice and modern, you can even see the dumplings being made through a glass window. Ugly Dumpling was a random fine we found on our way out of Parsippany, NY on the way home to Syracuse, NY. Boy was it a happy find. The shop is nothing much on the outside, as part of an outlet mall-situation. The inside, however, is very trendy! The coolest part, in my opinion, is the large glass window 'lab' where you can watch the dumplings being made. Having made dumplings before, I know it's difficult, so it is mesmerizing to watch them work! The Ugly Dumpling sampler is a great way to go, however we opted to go a different route- choosing instead to try different items across the menu! We started with the spicy dumplings, which were absolutely fantastic. The perfect bite, a great sauce, and the ratio of dumpling wrapper to filling was just right. We then moved on to the bbq pork bao bun, and I had to order MORE to go. It was SOOOOO FLUFFY! I couldn't believe the cloud we were eating. My friend had a ramen bowl that she said was delightful. I had been waiting for Ugly Dumpling to open and was excited to finally check it out. They have a location in Edison, but this was my first time dining with them. The interior is beautiful and surprisingly spacious, with plenty of seating. One of the standout features is the exhibition window where you can watch dumplings being hand-made which adds to the uniqueness of the restaurant. My table ordered the soup dumpling sampler, beef noodles, steamed BBQ pork buns, spicy wontons, and stir-fried green beans. The soup dumplings were flavorful and satisfying when eaten hot but once they cool down, the wrapper loses some elasticity and becomes slightly doughy, so timing matters. I'm going to give them some time to make adjustments, but overall the flavor profile was solid. The beef noodles were my favorite dish. The beef was chunky and super tender, and the noodles had great texture. The broth leaned slightly simple and a touch too sweet for my preference, but adding the chili oil at the table gave it more depth and balance. Even so, it's something I would be happy to order again. The rest of the dishes were consistently good, not necessarily "best in class," but well executed and enjoyable. Overall, the food was simple and tasty, and the dish prices were reasonable. While none individually stood out as extraordinary, the consistency, ambiance, and service came together to create a delightful experience. In that sense, Ugly Dumpling embodies the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The braised beef soup was average, and could have had more meat/veggies and been less salty. The soup dumpling were also average, as the dough was a bit thick and chewy. I did not enjoy the pork and crab dumplings at all, and I usually like these, as they tasted very fishy.
