Frequently order the vegetable fried rice and occasionally the Lo mein (lo mein is good not great). As a picky vegetarian when it comes to fried rice (I typically smell the food first to make sure there isn't any smell of pork or an unwanted scent) can confirm this place is clean & safe to order from. I've ordered fried rice at least 20 times in the last 2 years, and it's 10/10. Can taste the nice/mild char on the vegetables from the wok. Have been customers for a number of years. Tonight went for dinner and ordered Young Chow fried rice along with one of the house specialty dishes. We asked the server if they make Young chow FR and he said that they did. However, the rice we received was clumps of white rice with scattered ingredients. We told the server that this was not what we expected, as we've had Young Chow numerous times in China town NYC. He obnoxiously told us to go back to Chinatown to get it!! As the conversation continued, he then told us that the "conversation was over!" Needless to say, we will never be back!! In the past, during the days of my "cast iron stomach" childhood, I loved Chinese food almost as much as I did Italian. As I got older, as that "cast iron stomach" degenerated into a tricky, unreliable "delicate vessel," I became more ambivalent about the cuisine. I began paying attention to the migraine-MSG connection, especially as my migraines began to worsen dramatically. Sometimes, I'd forget the admonitions of more health conscious friends to tell the Chinese restaurant proprietors where we ordered "No MSG" and I could feel a balloon of intense pain expanding throughout the inside of my skull within minutes of eating. I no longer eat Wonton Soup, because of the salt, or Miso Soup, which I used to enjoy in Japanese restaurants. In the past, maybe I'd get a migraine after eating them. Maybe not. Now? A guaranteed migraine every time I indulge. Heretofore, both had been favorites of mine, but no more. My head can't take it. And the food just doesn't appeal to me in the same way anymore. Not sure if it's me, my evolving perceptions, or an objective reality, but more times than not I've ordered Chinese food, and I get a container of lukewarm breaded chicken slathered in an unappetizing mass of thick, congealed corn syrup. But, every once in awhile, the desire still hits me, erupting up out of my fond childhood memories, and I try still another Chinese restaurant. Most have been disappointing. Not this one. I've only been here twice, but I like it. The first time was before the Covid-19 crisis hit. I don't often come to Hackettstown, but I was in the area, and this place caught my eye. When I went inside, I ordered take-out. I told the young woman, "No MSG, please." I can't remember exactly what I ordered, but it was tasty, and...more importantly...I didn't get deathly ill. That's important. I found the food to be good, and they paid attention when I asked them to withhold the MSG. I was back in the area about a week ago. The restaurant had been closed for several months, and I noticed it was now open. I decided to partake. Walking inside was surreal. The restaurant was dark. A sheet of thick plastic separated the foyer from the actual restaurant, to which entrance was denied. I could discern no signs of life in the darkness of the restaurant beyond the plastic. There was a distant sound of some voices, but they were very distant, very faint. I called out; no answer. I was getting ready to leave, when someone suddenly called out from beyond the plastic, "Yes sir, can I help you?" A little table had been set up in front and I belatedly figured out that you ordered, waited for the order, and then picked it up on the table. Which I did. Orange chicken, and a small container of shrimp fried rice. No MSG please. The voice told me the order would be ready in 15-20 minutes and I could pay now. A gloved hand slipped through a hole in the plastic, took my money, slipped back behind the curtain, then emerged again to drop my change in my outstretched palm. Well...Ok. At least I didn't have to download an App. I sat in my car for 20 minutes, returned, and my bagged order was waiting on the table. No one in sight. The owner of the disembodied hand had disappeared. I took my order and left, feeling...as I have throughout this Covid-19 crisis...like some participant in a dystopian sci-fi movie. Back home, the food was tasty, and there was a lot of it, as I expected. No balloons of pain expanding alarmingly behind my skull after eating. The shrimp fried rice was particularly good; the shrimp was plentiful, and of a good size. My childhood love of Chinese food hasn't survived my adulthood, but when I do get the desire occasionally to partake, this is a good choice. The food is more than satisfactory, of good quality, and they pay attention to the "No MSG" admonition (not every Chinese restaurant does, in my experience), plus you get more than fair value for your money. I've only been to Szechuan Royale twice, but I'm a fan. When the urge for Chinese food hits me during my non-working hours, Hackettstown is where I'll be heading, and this is the place I'll be ordering from. read more

Do not go here if you have any allergies! I have celiac disease which means my body attacks itself if I eat gluten. I called Szechuan Royale before going and asked if they have any gluten free food. They replied that they did, however after eating it I was VERY SICK. I have not ate gluten in ages and after eating the chicken and cold noodles I was very ill and I am STILL SICK. Pu Pu Platter, (Shrimp Toast, Spare Ribs, Spring Rolls, Steamed Dumplings, cold?, and Crab Rangoon, undercooked.) Won Tons in Sesame Sauce. Great al dente won tons, a little heavy on the sauce. Twice Cooked/Double Sauteed Pork. Pork, Cabbage, and Bell Peppers. (No shiitakes or spiced tofu) almost zero heat, oversauced) I've had this preparation before, it's definitely a particular school, or chef's influence. Next time I visit I'd opt for something else. Shrimp & Scallops with spinach in Garlic Sauce. Apparently very popular here, owner apologized order size was on small side, as they ran out of those ingredients. Don't get me wrong, if you live in the greater Hackettstown area this place is dynamite. Cleanish, attentive staff, generous portions, house fried chow mein noodles and bowl of duck sauce for dipping on table, stainless steel teapot filled as needed, and thoughtfully packed leftovers. However, tonight I ordered delivery for my mom who was watching my daughter while my husband and I went out for a date night. 3 hours later when we got home her food had still not been delivered. This is the only place I've ever, ever sent back food, and I eat out a lot. Being new to the area, my husband and I were looking for a good Chinese restaurant. Ambiance is fine, typical Chinese 90s decor. Waitress was attentive. I ordered the House Chicken special. It looked like something from Kitchen Nightmares. It was huge - maybe three people couldve eaten it - extremely greasy, the breading was sliding off. I took a few bites but I knew it would end poorly if I continued and it tasted awful to boot. It looked like something from.a school cafeteria. My husband got the chicken with broccoli and it was Ok, definitely not great. I called the waitress over and told her I couldn't eat it. She looked dumbstruck but offered to take it back or make another one. After some convincing we had her take it off the bill. We left hungry and disappointed. Just had a terrible experience with Szechuan Royal in Hastings. We haven't ordered there since they changed hands and thought to give them a try. Within an hour of eating everyone was sick and in the bathroom. Our guests even left to go home due to feeling ill. I called to let them know and the manger was extremely belligerent on the phone and told us he was coming to our house to take the food back and see if we were really sick. I explained I was just trying to inform him what happened when he hung up on me. Then he actually showed up at our house! I gave him the leftovers and invited him in to see that both bathrooms were occupied with sick kids. He just took the leftovers and yelled that he "knew what we are doing" and left. Thank god we paid with credit because the charges will now be disputed mainly due to his crap attitude and unprofessionalism. read more

Two staff members (hostess and waiter) were making wontons in the dining room, which apparently is a regular habit. Much to our disgust, neither of them had on plastic gloves OR washed their hands while they handles the menus AND money! We only go there on occasion because the carpet is just black with dirt and always feared that sense of uncleanliness may carry into the kitchen. After what we saw, will never, ever, EVER go back. I said something to the hostess as we were leaving that she should not be handling food without washing her hands and she said, oh ok and then went into the kitchen hopefully to wash her hands but did I seriously have to point that out?
