This is prohibited by federal law (the Durbin Amendment) and major card networks like Visa and Mastercard.When it is IllegalDebit Card Surcharges: Charging a specific fee just for using a debit card, even if the cashier runs it as a credit transaction.Minimum Purchases: Merchants are not legally allowed to set a minimum spending amount (e.g., a $10 minimum) for debit card purchases.Cash Discounting Misuse: A business cannot charge a fee for debit cards while disguising it as a "credit card fee."
