I really wanted to like this place. I genuinely love the mom-and-pop feel of the shop--it has charm and potential. I also don't mind cash-only businesses, if they're upfront about it. We ordered over the phone and weren't told, and there's no clear signage when you walk in. You only find out when it's time to pay. In 2025, in New Jersey, that's a frustrating surprise--especially when you can also order through DoorDash. It just doesn't make sense. As for the food, we ordered a couple of Italian subs and a BLT with extra bacon. The Italians had soggy lettuce and maybe two slices of lunch meat--not what you'd expect from a deli. The BLT, despite asking for extra bacon, came with just two strips. Overall, everything was mediocre at best. I appreciate small businesses and want to see them thrive, but between the lack of communication and underwhelming food, it's hard to recommend without some improvements. We're back next week to finish a job and will try again, maybe they had they had the rookies in there today. read more

Popped in to Sub Shack in Hackettstown for the first time today after being told by many people for years now that I needed to check it out. Tiny little spot with barely enough room to think haha, but a huge menu and really friendly employees. Decided to go with "The Super" and "The Shack Special" The super is their version of an Italian. Got it dressed with LTO, oil and vinegar, and oregano. The roll was softer than I normally like for an Italian but it was very fresh and still held together nicely. I didn't eat half of this til just now (maybe 4 hours later) and it still wasn't a sloppy mess. The Shack Special was Roast beef, Turkey breast, Swiss, lettuce, tomato, and Russian dressing. These communists and their salad dressing...tastes good on everything. Again the meats were super fresh and the same roll for this one. I grabbed both to take a few bites for a video and I packaged this one up for my gf and I kept the Italian. These are both half sandwiches and they're bigger than most full size subs from anywhere. Cost for both of these total was around $16. No brainer here - Sub Shack - Didn't Suck! read more

Good Subs! I've driven by here plenty of times and finally popped in for a nice sandwich. Parking was a little tricky on the weekend because there is only street parking so plan ahead of kick your passenger out to make the grab. I order a classic turkey and pepper jack cheese sub on a long roll with Lettuce, Tomato and Oil/vinegar. The sandwich was bad either way tender love and care by the nice ladies. They have a beverage cooler and offer Joe's potato chips for purchase. It is a small establish so it can get a bit cozy. It is cash only but they do offer an ATM. I really enjoy all the sandwiches. The place is very small and tight and parking can be difficult but it's worth the lunch.

You definitely get your money's worth. I ordered a sub called the "Washington" it was 13 dollars which is justified because not only was it fantastic, but it was absolutely gargantuan. The only problem in my mind is that they used a bit too much sauce but that's a matter of personal taste. The wait was short and the people were very kind. 10/10 would recommend and would come back. The sub shack is a good place to get a sandwich or a sub. They have lots of menu choices and their portions are more than ample. The roast beef is particularly good. The macaroni salad very tasty. This place stinks! I ordered a cold cut sandwich to go and asked for extra vinegar, but specifically said -- DO NOT use so much vinegar that it will soak the bread. They didn't listen and used so much vinegar it soaked the bread, rendering the bread being totally mushy. The sandwich was inedible - I threw it out. I ordered French Fries. They tasted like the oil they were cooked in had not been changed for weeks. They were horrible. Threw them in the garbage too! Called to let them know about the food once I got home and they tried blaming me for their inadequacy. The woman on the phone was so rude and had a major attitude. Date of visit: 1/05/2012 I found myself in Hackettstown visiting an old friend from high school last Thursday while she was recovering from last months heart surgery. She was going to cook dinner for me, so I decided to take her out for lunch. Jersey has many influences from NYC, and one of them are the deli's. So we decided to hit up a real sub shop / deli (forget SubWay, good but not real deli food). Having grown up in Jersey, I really miss those influences!!! The place looked much bigger from the outside, but when we entered we noted that the only seating was along the front window that was only 4 feet long and had 3 stools. The menu was extensive with tons of sandwich options, while we tried to decide I asked about how rare the roast beef was. The girl shaved a slice of roast off and handed it too me to try... OMG, that was slice was mouth-watering goodness that almost melted in your mouth!! Okay, I was hungry, so my stomach could have been tricking my mind and taste buds, but I don't think so...LOL!! Cindy and I both told her the roast was yum!!! Then she tells us that they make the roast beef themselves... hmmm, no she has my attention... remember I have my own smoker and my inner carnivorous caveman fell in luv!!! The girl then tells us that they also roast their own turkey breast... Okay... Oh Please please PLEASE...Can I Try a Slice of that TOO??? Yuppers... she hands over two shaved slices of really delish mouth watering yummy Turkey breast.... (did I get enough descriptors in that?)!!! So we decided to share an small sub; menu said 8 inches, but that sucker was no less than 10 inches stuffed full of shaved turkey and roast beast...er beef! That sandwich would make any Grinch or Who happy as can be!!! My wish... that they made their own sub rolls... the rolls were commercial, so that was disappointment number 1, and number 2 was the Jewish Deli Pickle as it was as flat in flavor as it was huge. Downfall #3 - CASH ONLY... no credit... but they have a high priced ATM...lol!! The roast beast and turkey earned 4 Stars!!! The pickle earns a negative 0.5 and the commercial sub roll another negative 0.5 stars. I might not buy another sandwich from them, but I sure would buy the deli meat from them if I lived nearby. read more

This tiny and bustling place is right on Rt46/Main St in Hackettstown and if you drive to quick you'll miss it...note that there is parking around back. They have an amazing selection of sandwiches to choose from, or you can specify whatever you like. With all of the competing chains of sub shops popping up, its really nice to see a local favorite thriving. I can personally recommend any of the Italian selections or the turkey and Swiss hero's - but all sandwiches are super stuffed with meat so a small will be plenty for lunch. I was a bit hesitant to come in after seeing some of the reviews here but I had a car repair being done nearby and was hungry so! I walked in and had to take a beat as the place looks like it was untouched from the 1950's when I believe it opened. There is a picture of the original owner and the original sandwich menu with prices in the single digits! The sandwich counter people were nice, efficient, and expert. The choices of what to get were a bit overwhelming. I observed them as they made their sandwich and they work like a well oiled machine. The coolers behind them are full of wedges of MEAT! They do make vegetarian options but honestly you'd be better going elsewhere as this place is all about the old fashioned sub sandwiches piled high with salty, tasty, cured meats and cheeses. I ordered a reuben sandwich and waited. They asked if I wanted corned beef or pastrami. What a nice choice. I picked pastrami because I hadn't had a good pastrami in a long time. They prepared my sandwich quickly and i observed many regulars coming in and getting their sandwiches created with care. My sandwich arrived and I paid. The price was quite low for a Reuben so I was not expecting much. When I opened my bag and looked at my sandwich, I gasped. It looked like a picture of what a Reuben should look like. The bread was perfectly toasted and the cheese was melted over the sides of the bread. There was also so much food for the price. A small taste of pasta salad and a pickle too! I thought to myself I cannot eat all of that. Before I knew it, it was all gone. It was delicious. Every bite, I was thinking that the sandwich was perfect and tasty and I couldn't stop eating it. The pasta salad was a real treat. I usually am picky about cold salads but this pasta salad was delicious. Parsley, celery and a touch of mayo made this a pasta salad I wanted the recipe for. This was, the best sandwich I have had in years! I am a fan. There really is nothing to complain about but since I always like to find at least one thing to improve on, I would say there was too much cheese. As good as it's been since I was born right down the road at the Hackettstown Hospital. Today I had one of the best sandwiches I have had in years since I moved to California 5 years ago and stop by the Sub Shack every time I am back in NJ. The Disaster is the quintessential sandwich. The ham is sweet and savory and is some of the best ham I have ever had. Provolone and the rest of the meat is truly Italian. Fresh veggies and bread, honestly almost orgasmic. The women are amazing. The young man behind the counter on other hand is an absolute nightmare, every single time that I go in there. He is one of the rudest people I have ever interacted with in public. I honestly do not know how he is still employed. He must be related to the owner if he is still working there. he is constantly making rude comments rolling his eyes at customers and just being nasty in general. Was highly recommended sub shack. Finally ordered from there since I was down the street. Parking is miserable on that part of town. I ordered. My husband picked up. My husband who has had to take serve safe classes being a manager or restaurants for 20 plus years. Didn't tell me the slicer didn't look like it had been cleaned since the night before discarded loose meat that had been slice previously from a whole morning of slicing was on the counter and on the slicer. He told me this after I ate my sandwich. And after we went home about a hour later. With me running inside the house so I wouldn't get sick infront of the neighbors in our driveway. Then when I asked while I was still sick for more then a day what did the place look like because it looks beat up from the outside. Then he told me about the slicer. The non masked people breathing on the food. But was happy to tell me they placed our order in a frig. Please clean your slicer. Clean the counter more often. Rotting meat is no good for anyone to eat. Not to mention. How I complained the whole time to ny husband how the sandwich meat was tasteless.too much cheap meat. Too much ham.and 2slices of salami. From the Whole experience before I even got sick i wouldn't recommend this place. I will only go to bg deli in budd lake from now on. I only went to this deli because I had to be In town. I was born in Hackettstown and worked at Sub Shack when I was 16. This place has some of the best subs in town, grade A soups, amazing deviled eggs, and various salads. People tend to love this place for its food, but whether you are a former employee or a lifelong customer, the owner Janice will be horrible to you. I have never seen the woman smile to an employee or customer and its costing this Hackettstown staple a lot of business. Her husband is a nice man, but for some reason he gets stuck on the grill, and ol' gruff mouth is up front dealing with the customers. Now I live in CA and its been 10 years since I was cashing out sandwich customers. I have lived in Hackettstown for many years now and had never really heard anything about this deli so I never went. This past weekend I decided to try it out and went with a friend thinking it had to be pretty good to have been around as long as it has. I ordered a turkey and cheese sub and he ordered a reuben. Unfortunately we got it to go because if I had eaten it there I would have brought it right back. The meat looked very cheap and was slimy...yuck! My stomach is turning just thinking about it! My friends reuben was good though so maybe they have some good things on their menu but I expect a sandwich shop to have quality meat. Dont think I will be returning. read more
