The 53 Grill makes solid Sloppy Joe Sandwiches, a NJ Classic that has never really spread beyond the state. I have no idea why! A triple decker sandwich of Turkey (or roast beef), Swiss, coleslaw and tangy Russian Dressing layered on rye, cut in thirds, the flavors meld together in a Heavenly way! Cut in thirds, definitely enough to save one third for a late night snack or lunch the next day. The 53 Grill Sloppy Joe is legit. Whenever I'm "home" I have to have a Sloppy a Joe. Truth be told, my favorite Joe is from a Hickory Tree in Chatham but when I don't have time to make the ride, this is my go to spot. Since cross country flights no longer serve food, I often stop here on the way to the airport and buy two; one to eat on the flight, the other stashed in my insulated bag to savor for lunch the flowing day. They are that good. Service is polite, fast and efficient. I avoid the mad rush during lunch time. The fact that there is a mad rush is a sign that the food is good and prices more than fair. I live in Portland now and a decent sandwich is $9-$10 so I really appreciate that I can get a Sloppy Joe for $6.99. See you next time I'm in Jersey! read more

I stopped in for lunch and liked the place, but I definitely need to come back when it's not the crazy noon hour. The Pro's Since it was my first time here, I went for the traditional Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a roll. The sandwich and coffee were very good. The staff was very friendly. The Con's Parking was tough. Had to circle through parking lot twice and luckily someone was pulling out. The tables were full, was lucky to find a place to sit. Unfortunately, table was not wiped off so I needed to do it myself. I'll stop by again at an off peak time. Great ,casual, low key place with tables and EXTREMELY nice and friendly staff. Came in today with a bunch of friends and we all enjoyed all the different options on the menu we ordered. Soups, Sandwiches, egg platters, fries,, empanadas, and more. Everything looked delicious and everyone enjoyed their lunch. Staff couldn't of been any nicer and there is also a parking lot as well. I've been coming here since the 53 Grill opened and I'm not gonna lie, if I could eat here more often I would. I have never, ever, EVER, ordered something here that I didn't rave about. My tow favorite items are the empanadas and their 'Sloppy Joe' sandwiches. I don't know what they do to their empanadas, but they are amazing I've eaten a lot of empanadas over the years and I can't get enough of the tasty treats here. As for the Sloppy Joe-OMG. Turkey, Roast Beef, Swiss, cole slaw and Russian Dressing on rye. Ummmm, OK! So delicious. Every day there are specials, each one seemingly better than the next. If I could make one more recommendation, it would be the Guinness cheesesteak. That's right, I said Guinness cheesesteak... Meat marinated in Guinness beer-yeah, it really is as good as it sounds. I ordered a buffalo chicken salad. when I saw my salad, i didn't know what to think. I've seen buffalo chicken salad from other restaurants but it never looked like this. It looked underwhelming at first glance because it wasn't oozing with the red and white sauces I've seen. Now, to someone counting calories and is more health conscious this buffalo chicken salad would be perfect. I will admit once i began eating, it wasn't as bad as it looked. I'd rate it a 3 out of 5. I thought the use of celery in the salad was clever and ties into the whole buffalo chicken theme. However, I could have done without it in my salad. I would patronize this business again. I have been eating here for the past THREE years. The food is GREAT, I recommend the empanadas they came with a delicious salsa (that the owner told me is house made) that paired very well. The brisket quesadillas that are all home made is AMAZING. And the owner was a helpful funny man with a sick pony tail. And the ambiance has a great marvel and dc comics feel. 53 grill is a little space for sandwiches and lotto tickets off of route 53 in Denville, near the NJ transit station. Their menu offers around 25 different sandwiches including burgers on a variety of different types of bread/rolls. I got the scully without bacon. It was kind of dry. Staff was friendly though, and we were hungry, and they had a parking lot, so everyone was satisfied. The burger looked juicy. read more

I am obsessed with take out menus so I always read the ones strewn about the kitchen and reception desk at my job. Empanadas and sandwich specials, sure ill give it a whirl. Pulling up looks like any old run of the mill deli but let me assure you it is not. While they do offer standard deli fare, they also step outside the box with some original creations. Breakfast empanadas? Why not. Sweet potato crusted chicken tenders? Well now you're just teasing me. Something called a Guineans cheesesteak? You might have me for life. Food was freshly made, affordable, and down right delicious. My beef and chicken empanadas were spot on and the chicken tenders mentioned above were something unexpected and really really good. I've only been here once, but the place left an impression on me. There's a lot of options in Downtown Denville, so I never really noticed this place. Well, today, being a big Pink Floyd fan, the prism empanada logo kind of drew me in. I got one of the specials and the owner greeted me in a friendly fashion and even cleared my plate. Living in Denville i got my pick for subs, which is amazing because i don't think much can beat a GOOD turkey and cheese sub. That said, this is my favorite spot for it. Their subs are large and loaded, but always the right ratio of meat, cheese, lettuce and mayo. My husband will drop everything for one of their subs - there is no place in town he'd rather get lunch from. His go-to is their cheesesteaks! Also, the owner is always so nice. My husband and I ordered three soups and 7 empanadas. The chicken empanadas were really good and the beef were ok. The hot sauce he had for the empanadas were tasty. The soup was ok. Got the pasta fagioli. It didn't taste home made. It tasted like canned minestrone soup with chopped up meatball. My daughter had the chicken noodle soup. It looked homemade. I saw pieces of carrot and celery in it. We waited a very long time for this order, over a half an hour for empanadas that were already made sitting under a heat lamp and I'm sure the soup was already made in the back because when we got home, it was just warm. read more

I eat at the 53 Grill almost every day and I have tried just about everything on the menu. All of the sandwiches are delicious and piled high with whatever you want on them. I highly recommend the Sloppy Joes or Specialty sandwiches for lunch (they're all terrific) and for breakfast, nothing beats their Breakfast Quesadilla or the Capitalist Pig; just make sure you have a good cardiologist lined up for that one! We went last Saturday. The store is small and neat. I like these kitchen models on their wall. The girl who took our order was sweat. 53 grill has special menu during weekend. My wife had a California Chicken sub and I order Phili steak. My Phili is OK, as it has no onion or bell pepper. The Young lady was very nice when I asked for Swiss cheese to place the Cheddar on menu. My wife's chicken sub is the BEST chicken sandwich I have ever had. The surface of grilled chicken breast was crispy and it was juicy inside. We also ordered a beef and an apple empanada. They were freshly made and taste good. The portion is relatively big so I would not recommend to order more than a sub+ an empanada per person. I will definitely visit 53 Grill again for different items. read more

My family loves it here. Been coming for years. My two year old daughter loves the beef empanadas (or "nadas" as she asks for them by name). They have awesome specials and, if you like hot sauce... like ghost pepper hot... keep an eye out for the Delta Force version of their Chuck Norris sandwich. In the winter, try their "walking taco" which is a bag if Doritos filled with chili and taco toppings. Brilliant and delicious. Great cheesesteaks, great tuna. Stumbled upon this amazing eatery while touring through the upper east coast. Walked into a welcoming environment and was quickly greeted and told of the days specials. I went with the Jack Daniels philly, which was a sweet and filling. My friends got the "Chuck Norris" (flavorful with a kick), "Izzy's favorite" (right balance of flavors), and "Some Devil" (So Right).... The last sandwich being a tribute to Dave Matthews Band! The owner was a great people person and made us want to come back for more..... Maybe we can swing by on our way back home! The prices are fair and the portions are a great bang for your buck. However, it is the empanadas and that secret salsa that are my favorite. They are hands down the best I've ever tasted. Wherever I bring them, they are a huge hit. I even have an account who tells me I am not allowed come in without them. I can't emphasize how good that salsa is. I have poured it on chips,chicken, and even pasta.
