We each ordered an original grilled cheese sandwich for $6.99 each which we picked our favorite cheeses. I chose cheddar (for flavor), mozzarella (for stretch), and havarti (because it's havarti). There are a total of 8 cheeses to chose from. And then added on a bowl of tomato soup for $3.99. They also have a $.99 tomato dipper option for a small cup which is a good idea since the portion size was huge with a bag of chips. Our sandwiches hit the spot even though a thicker sliced bread would have been even more decadent it was still like my mom used to make. Since I was in Morristown anyway, I stopped by the Melt Factory which I had bookmarked for quite some time. It's a hole in the wall that serves grilled cheese. Every sandwich comes with a bag of chips, and they also serve soup. You order at the counter, and they'll bring your sandwich to your table. My initial thought was "Why is a regular grilled cheese sandwich $5.95?" But I got one anyway and found that each order actually seems to be 2 sandwiches, so the price isn't bad for two sandwiches and a bag of chips. We got the regular grilled cheese and the al fresco. Both sandwiches were served on white bread. For the regular, I got the American, Cheddar, and Pepper Jack cheeses. The cheeses didn't really melt into a homogeneous mixture as you can see in my photo. The Al Fresco had provolone, mozzarella, and roasted peppers. I found it a little bit bland, since roasted bell peppers aren't spicy and neither of those cheeses are particularly sharp. Neither sandwich was particularly well buttered. We hit these guys up on their second day in business so this is a developing story! This is a little place with five regular tables and a couple of high shelves with barstools, it's tucked into the lower half of an old house on busy Morris Ave. The staff was kinda like, oh hey, we have customers, uh, ok. They were playing Q104.3 kinda loud that evening. Anyhow we tried the classic, the BCT (bacon cheddar tomato), the BBQ (pulled pork with cheese) and the Ruben. All were tasty but I have to say that all needed a bit longer in the griller to get properly crusty and gooey. Everything came with pickle slices and a choice of crunchies (chips, fritos, doritos). Liked the whole-grain bread a lot. Two sandwiches were served with a side of house dressing, which was all new to me. I prefer a side of ketchup with a grilled cheese but of course my family thinks I'm nuts to eat 'em that way. Sandwiches are $6 to $8; they are average size so while they're not expensive they're not cheap either. A big guy could prolly eat two without much effort, certainly two classics but maybe not two Rubens.
