We were lucky to spot Sam's on our drive through Rockaway before getting back onto Rt 80. Sam's Deli was exactly what we were looking for, a quick stop for a sandwich and to sit. There was a great selection of convenience store items including a variety of chips, ice cream and cold drinks. I ordered an Italian sub to split and they made it fresh at the deli counter right there. I don't always go for cold cuts but when I can see that the fridge is clean and well kept and that the meats and cheeses are being sliced fresh I know that the deli cares about quality of food. The sandwich hit the spot and was a great deal. The front window has a few stools to sit on so that you can enjoy your sandwich there and watch whatever sports are on TV. A couple weeks ago we were in need of some post-field hockey sandwiches for two hungry players, three hungry parents, and one hungry son! Since the place we usually go to was closed for the day we decided to give Sam's Deli a shot. Located out where the old Texas Smoke place used to be, I was glad that this place seemed to be doing well in the same location. Since I didn't have a menu I had to order when I got there and it was a little overwhelming at first as there is a lot going on here (deli, sandwiches, sides, even a little convenience store), but I'm a big boy and was able to figure out what to order for everyone pretty quickly. So here goes - My son ordered the Chicken Parm and he loved it...it was a little bit messy as there was a lot of sauce, but he gave it two thumbs up. My daughter ordered the most boring sandwich known to mankind - Turkey with American cheese and lettuce, which you can't screw up so she was happy. We also ordered two greek salads with grilled chicken and they are huge...you're gonna pay, but they are huge, and neither got finished, but two more double thumbs up. My wife ordered a chicken salad sandwich and practically licked the plate when she was done. I ordered a sloppy joe with turkey and roast beef. Now, I'm the nitpicky person who writes all these reviews so I'll be a little hyper-critical here...the sandwich itself was delicious-I mean it, it was really good, but it was the first time I ever had a sloppy joe where I wanted more...it's just a little too small, especially for the price. We grabbed a few other items - Cole slaw was just ok, don't know what they use in it, but it didn't overwhelm me. The tabouli was honestly the best tabouli I have ever eaten...and I've had tabouli made by crinkly, old-country, Lebanese women so I know good tabouli. I picked up some shrimp salad for lunch the next day and it was also fabulous - shrimp wasn't over-done and it wasn't swimming in mayo. We also ordered macaroni salad and it wasn't good...I tasted it when I got home and it tasted like it had gone bad-at least it wasn't too expensive. So there you have it...great sandwiches and salads and some hit and miss sides. Place is a bit on the expensive side and for me it's out of the way so it won't ever be my 'go-to' place, but if I was out this way and needed a good sandwich I'd go here again. Giving it three stars because of the macaroni salad, the small sloppy joe and the bad mac salad. Man, where to start. First of all I'm shocked that this place has such a high review considering every time I go there I have the same terrible experience. My only guess is the reviews are from friends and family members. Literally every time I have gone here (about 10 times now, I work near Green Pond Rd. and have limited food options) , I would order a sandwich and wait a good 10-15 minutes or so before I have to ask for my order. Once the order was dropped completely. There goes my lunch break. Every other time either they forgot to tell me it's ready, or it wasn't ready yet. Meanwhile at least one other patron had come in, ordered and received his food before me. Regulars I guess. Must be nice. I have heard the staff complain that they've been making food since 7:30am twice now. Today, they (with attitude) refused to make me a cobb salad because they were tired of making food I guess, even though it was on the menu. And this was after ignoring me when I walked in. Sorry to bother you, fine, I'll go somewhere else. Never again, Sam, you've fooled me way too many times. Try Rockaway Bagel and deli instead, super friendly staff that won't forget about your order, ignore you, or tell you they don't want to make you food. read more

Ordered a sandwich grabbed a bag of chips and a water went to pay but didn't have cash only a debit card. Went to ring up $8.75 was the total but they wouldn't take my card minimum $10 charge for cards. They pointed to an ATM but theres a charge to use it so my meal would of cost me $3 or $4 more. I never got my sandwich, chips and drink. I left and probably won't be back, not a great policy. I understand they are charged a percentage for each CC or Debit card transaction. I told a friend who runs a deli what happened he agreed with me not good business, he would rather be charged the percentage and have a repeat costumer. The deli looks nice its clean and its a Convenience Store as well. The menu looked good lots of specials and Boars Head meats. Hot and cold sandwiches, good looking salads. Give it a try just make sure you have cash or spend more then $10. read more

Just moved to rockaway so we went out to try some local placed! Had the Italian sub and the chicken cutlet sandwich with lettuce tomato, mayo, oil & vinegar - amazing. We also grabbed a small Mac n cheese, chips and two drinks for all about $22 not bad at all! Very reasonably priced for the quality for food being offered! I was also impressed with their desserts and the empanadas - can't wait to go back soon for another sandwich! I know I'll definitely be here often even for the liars night snacks! read more

I have never been in here but a good friend gave me a large assorted sandwich platter from here. The platter was off the hook A+, assorted meats and cheeses all fresh and top shelf. The pastrami was literally like butter and I mean like butter! I bit into the sandwich expecting the typical meat pull out but my old teeth ran through this sandwich like it wasn't even there. I literally had to call my buddy and ask where did you get this? I placed an order on Grubhub 30 minutes before I arrived at Sam's only to find the clueless, old lady at the front counter forgot to check the receipt printer where my GrubHub order was. Now I am late for lunch because I have to wait for them to make my order when all she had to do was check the printer. I am a hard critic of deli's since I am jersey girl. I have eaten the tabouli, hummus and can honestly say that this place makes the best sandwiches ever. We got food catered from here for a super bowl party and it was delicious and very affordable. It is a small family owned business and I love to shop local so I always feel good about spending money at a family owned deli. If you are in the area I definitely recommend trying the Ruben or any sandwich on the menu :) read more

Called to have an order delivered. Was told they don't deliver on weekends and only from 11-3 on weekdays. I responded that I had been told in the past they deliver all the time and I have in fact received a delivery on the weekend. Organized a St Patrick's Day office lunch party for 2016. Remembered that someone else had used this location last year and the food was great. This year we could not have been more pleased with the sequel. Everyone loved the corned beef because it was well cooked, lean, tasted great, and was well portioned in each sandwich. Those that ordered other items off the menu were equally pleased. One caution that the current menu on Yelp is outdated, so make sure you call to get the new one! The potato salad and cole slaw disappeared instantly and everyone loved the pickles. The owner (Mike) and his staff were very helpful in taking our orders and put the individual names on each one. He was ready on time and the food was fresh! Everyone asked where the food came from and where this place was located. Made me look like a hero! read more
