Haven't been in a year....loved it then.... Probably not going back. Pupu platter was good but Happy Family dish was very disappointing. Husband's Dragon and Phoenix was ok - but he never complains about food as long as he's being fed lol. Drinks were good (and necessary!) I ordered take out last saturday. I spent $93.00. Everything was really terrible and the teryaki taste like watered down some how. The general tsu's chicken was supposed to be spicy.. not so much , the only thing i think was ok was the egg roll. Will not be ordering there again much tastier chinese food elsewhere. The food is always fresh and tasty. When they say "lobster", they really mean lobster not some fake replacement like other asian restaurants offer. Take out is prompt and hot for a nice fragrance on the drive home. Best Chinese restaurant in the area for years. read more

The decor is absolutely delightful. So ornate. What a treat to come inside because I feel like I am in a temple or some exceedingly significant Zen establishment. This menu is filled with a gazillion offerings . We got lo mein and I got the fried rice. And I was a little disappointed that it just seems to be rice with soy sauce on it and that a handful of shrimps. It lacked variety of colors which I associate with nutrition. No vegetables at all. It was not savory and it was not satisfying. The same goes with the lo mein - it was really just noodles with soy sauce on it. On a good note : the staff was nice and the hot tea was good. read more

Best Chinese food in the area where you can sit & dine in. Service is erratic - sometimes it's been very bad & other times it's good. Just be sure to not put your entire order in all at once or you will get it all at once! This place also has Japanese food but we always Chinese here. However, the dumplings on the Japanese side are better than the Chinese one's because the dumpling dough is thinner on the Japanese side. They are the pork gyoza's & are very good. Soup is always on point as well as the Chun Bo Chow Fun, & the shrimp dishes. Pay attention to the description of the shrimp dishes because the jumbo shrimp dishes are clearly marked. Orange beef is excellent - they just need to slice the beef a little thinner. Overall this place is a good value - oh & the drinks - they are made very well! Try the Scorpion bowl! read more

We visited on 7/25/24. Food was OK. We had the Hot and Sour Soup, the hot and spicy Shrimp and a chicken dish. The Hot and Spicy dishes were not hot and spicy enough, although I was able to add hot sauce to either. Food was good but the server forgot to bring out the Hot and Sour Soup, so it arrived after the other dishes were already on the table. We initially sat at the bar and the seats were not tall enough to reach over the top of the bar effectively to eat, so we moved to a table after that. Chun Bo has been in Newton for years, and I have eaten there a few times in the last two years, but tonight, it was pretty bad. I hadn't gone there in years, due to lousy food, but it seemed to be improving.. First, there was no silverware or napkins on the table, and I had to repeatedly ask the waitress for them, which made me angry. I ordered hot & sour soup, which was just OK. My entree was Hot and Spicy Hunan Beef, which I ordered very spicy with the beef well done. It was slimy. The consistency was terrible, there were not enough vegetables, and the beef could have been cooked longer. Needless to say, Chun Bo and I are done once again. read more

Wow did this place go downhill. Immediately realized it when ordered the pork dumplings as we always do. They are now passing them off as "new ". They are FROZEN! Horrible. Very sad they would do this. The rest of the dinner was just disappointing. They load up all entries with cheap items. No red peppers ever! Since the original owner sold the business, the food has been, in my opinion, gross. The moo shu vegetables are suddenly spicy, with the wrong sauce for the wraps. The dumplings are weird. The lo mein tastes different (not in a good way). I got sushi, hoping THAT would at least be okay, but the pieces were huge and loosely wrapped. Each individual piece fell apart, making it impossible to eat properly. What used to be a standard, go-to, reliable place for a good meal is no more, and it breaks my heart to write that. read more

Used to live in Newton and Chun Bo's was our go to take out Chinese restaurant. Still visit the hometown now and again so we went to see if it's still good - yes indeed! We sat down to eat int the very nice dining room, classic Chinese restaurant decor. Service is very fast and attentive. Big menu, both Chinese and Japanese choices. We were a group of 5, seated right away. I had the Pepper Steak Combo which included fried rice, egg roll, soup and ice cream for 12.95, excellent deal! I must admit I ate it all, so it was delicious and the right size. Good food at a good price! read more

Very disappointed with the food we purchased on New Year's Eve! First off, they packed $115.00 worth of food in 1 bag and which almost broke on our way into the house and something leaked. The shrimp toast was awful, greasy and wet. The egg rolls were greasy as well and very salty. The steamed dumplings were doughy and tasteless. The other items were equally disappointing. We have been a customer of Chum Bo for many years, but we will not be back in 2023. read more

My first and only visit was today,Christmas day 2022, with a to-go phone order. Having never been here before I asked about the spring rolls (traditionally made with veg only, specifically the veg that is available in the spring) asking if they contained any shellfish, as I am deathly allergic. With confidence the order was taken. Waited a few minutes after quoted time, not a big deal at all, especially being Christmas day. Now as I have had this happen before at other Chinese eateries I had cracked the spring roll in half first, and only saw shredded veggies, assuming it was safe to eat I continued.....big mistake. About 2 bites into the spring roll I see a half bitten piece of 61/70 shrimp. I called to confirm that the spring rolls were intended to have shrimp, when I confronted the person on the phone with this information they became very withdrawn from any responsibility. I wasn't calling to complain, I was calling to make sure that it was a known quantity so others can avoid the same issue. Having a major deadly allergen unannounced, and readily found in a menu item is a dangerous game to play, especially when the customer specifically asks about its contents. This isn't a situation where I ordered something clearly unsafe for my allergy, or I asked for a special modification to an existing menu item. I asked about an item on the menu, was told it DID NOT include the allergen, so naturally when biting into the item and finding a piece of shrimp has now found its way into my digestive system I am.....upset. imagine for a moment that you had a very long last few days between you and your wife/husband, and just wanted to spend Christmas day chilling on the couch while binge watching something on a streaming service while you got a fire going and dogs huddled around you while you snack on some Chinese food. now imagine that entire day gets thrown out the window as you angrily write this review while you're on your way to the emergency room to get pumped full of benadryl so you don't die from anaphylaxis......merry Christmas. ps. For context I've been an executive chef for over 14 years, hence why I'm soooo tired from the last few days,and really didnt feel like cooking anything today. I can tell you with the upmost of confidence that I wouldn't bother writing a negative review if the food simply sucked (it was meh, but w/e) this is literally a matter of life and death for some people. If you cannot manage an allergen as serious as shellfish than you should strongly reconsider if your business model is viable in 2022. You will have someones life in your hands that has less awareness as I did in this situation, and I can only hope they are lucky enough to make it out alive instead of dying a painful and confusing death from lack of oxygen. read more

I came here 2 years for a family celebration .. I love Chinese food I loved the look of the authentic Chinese atmosphere. The food then was the one of the best I have ever had . The food was simply out of this world. We ordered Ribs that were very delicious, shrimp with lobster sauce that was probably the best I ever had. Fried Dumplings comparable to china town, Chicken w/ broccoli in garlic sauce. The fried rice gets a A ++ the portions were big but more importantly good quality and delicious! Found our selves in Newton at lunchtime. Looked at Yelp and selected Chun Bo for lunch. Saw Peking Duck on the menu for two...it was delicious. The duck was crispy and the pancakes were fresh. I highly recommend this restaurant and this lunch. read more

I use to visit Chun Bo every week. But the service was so bad and the management (owner who pretends she does not own the place) is worse. After I heard from someone who works in Town Hall that I should stay away because of the kitchen, I NEVER returned. Not missing much and less aggravating from dealing with the owner, her relatives with bad attitudes as wait staff and the constant changing of the good people. NEVER again! read more

We have been customers since the 90's. During all these years we dined in or ordered takeout. We noticed a change in the quality and quantity. The lunch combo used to include soup when taking out. I think that the restaurant might have changed hands or management within the last few years. In June we placed a takeout order due to the restaurant shuttering its sit-down dining due to the panademic. It wasn't a large order but was still almost $20. worth of food. I ordered SCALLION PANCAKES and they were hard. I decided to keep my receipt and bring it the next time I ordered food. I didn't call because I figured there would be a break down in communication (language barrier). Today, my Father wanted some Egg Rolls and Rice and asked me to go to CHUN BO. He is very I'll (Cancer) and eats little nowadays. I brought my receipt from the previous visit and the woman said I should have called about that order. I am a caregiver who has limited time and anytime I get a reprieve from cooking I'm joyous. All I wanted to do was place another $20+ order and have a resolution to the hard overcooked SCALLION PANCAKES from my previous order. The woman was not empathetic and proceeded to push the receipt back to me with a resilient "NO". So CHUN BO, you have lost our long-time business due to the quality of your food and your attitude. This was our first on-our-own group dinner during our two week stay in East Bumble. Actually I think we were technically in West Bumble. The staff was friendly and very cool about accomodating our walk-in party of 10. They also kept feeding the men in our party drinks despite the ever-increasing noise level. The food was standard Ameri-Chin, nothing special. But it was hot and filling and the leftovers were just as good the next day. What more can you really ask for? read more

Two words: where's Jimmy? I want to start by saying I have lived in Andover for 25 years and have been a long time customer of Chun Bo. The staff has always been friendly, the service and food have always been on point. Chun Bo used to have the best food around. Ever since Chun Bo was sold off, the restaurant has been on a decline. I noticed it first over the summer that the food did not taste as good as it used to. I thought maybe they hired some new chefs who didn't have the menu down right but two months ago we were told that Jimmy had sold the place. I was very disappointed with tonight's meal and I will not return back to Chun Bo. Now that Jimmy doesn't own the establishment I feel no reason to support it. The three boys standing at the register are very unprofessional. One was wearing a t shirt and jeans and all three stood bored on their phones. I'm confused as to why three are handling to go orders and answering the phone, because that is a job for one. Granted, it looked like tonight was busy for take out but it would have been nice for them to help out or at least ask the server if he wanted help with his tables. The food has been cold on several occasions and the recipe has definitely changed for some of the meals. All five of the meals tonight were cold. The service tonight was less than good. The server had 6+ tables to wait and was very busy. He worked hard while everyone else stood and stared at the dining room. Our table was never pre bused. Roles were very defined tonight: one does the water, one does the tea kettle and one does the serving. Someone could have helped out with the pre bus. When you order the combination platter you have the choice of ordering dessert. This is normally great, however, tonight our server didn't ask us what we wanted and instead brought a plate full of different flavor ice creams with pineapple. This was a terrible thing to do because most at the table order chocolate and there was only one scoop for five people. I asked the server when this changed and he said "this is better for sharing." If you're going to change something like that you should tell the customer or at least give them an option to share or have individual desserts. The pineapple was out of a can, Dole is a great company but it was obvious this was not fresh. Overall I am very disappointed with the decline Chun Bo has been on and do not recommend eating here if you have been a long time patron. read more
