It's a clean your plate kind of place. Flavors are amazing. I've traveled through Asia and I can get very picky, this place delivers.

We went here once in early 2018 but we live about 45 minutes away so we haven't been back since now. That said we have always thought about how good our meal was. We finally had a free moment as a family to come on the weekend to do the dim sum. Although we didn't love everything we tried we could not have asked for a better experience. The service was a bit slow. I asked for my Lamb Rondan to be EXTRA hot & double empathized it but it wasn't. I swear Asian restaurants think, "American wants hot??? Ha, you can't handle hot!" MAYBE, they give us 1 chili that has been cleaned of all heat so it's barely passable as a chili? Little do they realize there are herds of us that crave searing hot, make you hiccup & cause small beads of sweat on your forehead it's so hot. I guess I'll have to bring y own from now on. We went here for dim sum on a Sunday morning, and I must say it was simply one of the best dining experiences of my life. It was a bit off-putting to have trays of "examples" wheeled out, for I hardly want to imagine eating food that was clearly cooked hours ago. Obviously, though, they do not serve you off the example tray. All our food was hot, fresh and complex. For starters we had some shrimp dumplings, as well as vegetarian ones that included sweet potato. The vegetarian ones were my favorites, with just a hint of sweetness that played nicely with the earthy flavor of the sticky rice. My boyfriend got the corn fritters, I got the vegetable spring rolls, and we shared an order of sticky egg over rice with mushrooms. I normally don't care for spring rolls, which are often greasy and taste only of oil, but these were light, shatteringly crisp and came with a deeply tangy dipping sauce. The rice was topped with a perfectly runny fried egg, and his corn fritters were sweet and has large chunks of vegetables interspersed throughout. If eating a big plate of just one thing bores you, I highly recommend this experience. My only complaint is that dessert was lackluster; we shared a fried banana, which was coated in a flavorless batter. But everything else, even the coffee, was exceptional. I would definitely go back if I had some extra money lying around. (Be prepared to drop fifty bucks for two people.) Overall a fantastic meal. read more

Pandan Room is the highlight of Hackettstown. Tucked away off of main street, Pandan Room is the place to be for a great meal. Every time I come home from school, I make sure to stop at Pandan before I leave. I'm not sure if this is "authentic" Thai cuisine, but it sure is good! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about all the dishes -- they offer vegetarian options for most of the plates and will even ask if you'd like eggs or dairy included (for the vegans). The dim sum is alright, I've only been once and wasn't too impressed, but the dinner service is great. My personal favorites are the pad siew, the bang bang chicken and shrimp, the papaya salad, and the masaman curry -- all, of course, made vegetarian. The pad thai is killer, too. All in all, Pandan Room is my go-to restaurant when I come home. read more

Tried the dim sum and it was great. They push out one cart first with ready to eat dishes - the usual stuff you would get at dimsum ( shumai, dumplings, etc). The stuff on the cart was good but nothing to brag about. Second cart was made to order items and this cart was so good. Mostly fried stuff but the items all had a unique flavor to them. It was less traditional dim sum items but I loved it because it was different. The items I remember were the springrolls, corn fritters, sticky rice with egg, samosas.. All very good and i liked all the different sauces they paired with them. I will definitely be back again. I will just make sure to save room for the second cart!! I also remember the thai ice tea but not in a good way. Probably pass on the drink next time and stick to regular hot tea. read more

Pandan offers dim sum on the weekends and it's great! Everything is flavorful and reasonably priced. The edamame dumplings are delicious! I enjoyed the chicken and garlic, and the pork and ginger; hubby liked the spicy beef and pork (although he said it wasn't very spicy). I enjoyed the jersey corn fritter with basil dipping sauce too. Hubby said Thai wings were good but the spice was a little offbeat. Wait staff is helpful and patient, even after explaining two carts full of dim sum dishes! Today was our second visit and we will be back. Very filling, and lunch is an experience, instead of the typical fried pub food and beer. It would be more fun with a group, where we could share more and try other things. Maybe next time! read more

Have been going here for their dim sum brunch for years and it has always been a great find up in the outback of Hackettstown but this time they missed the mark on the food and service. The young women that was there clearly was carrying the burden of waiting on the tables while the young am was entertaining a young boy. Pandam room is a food oasis in a community of chain restaurants and fast food. The environment is cozy, vibrant and well decorated. The food is really tasty and the portions are large. My former roomate introduced me to this spot, and I've been bringing friends ever since. I've never had an appetizer or entree l that I didn't like.... I'm not a huge fan of their desserts, but their cooked food more than compensates for that. The fritters are very good, and oh my, Roti Cani! All of the salads are great and I'm a huge fan of the ponti pork. They had a seasonal offering, seafood bisque that made my boyfriend actually get up and do a little dance. I agree, the "spicy" food is not very hot for true heat seekers. Ask for very spicy because they tend to tone it down. The service is so-so....I think they hire a lot of inexperienced college students for waitstaff but, the food!! If there is better food in Hackettstown, I really want to know about it! read more

This was our first visit and we were definitely impressed. Bring a bottle of wine as it's a BYPB establishment, charming on the outside and warm and cozy on the inside. We started off sharing a couple of appetizers; the curry chicken puff and satay chicken with peanut sauce. The chicken curry puff was light and fluffy and had a myriad of flavors served with a light cucumber lemongrass sauce. The chicken satay had an ominous dark sauce yet was absolutely wonderful. No fake sugar and very nutty. The main courses were Solid. We had bang bang chicken and mama Mimu curry ( my husbands description) and they were both great! Definitely recommend chopsticks! Finally, for desert, we had chocolate soufflé and mango mousse. Amazing! When the bill arrived, the whole meal was less than $60. Great service from Kelly! This place is a real gem! read more

Not a food review at all, since we've eaten here and had many delicious, enjoyable experiences. This is a while in coming, as it reflects on TOPO, their sister restaurant, and their overall ability to manage themselves. Similar experiences in both restaurants has happened now one too many times, in a bad way. Whenever we get take out from either place, the experience is often unprofessional...and now in these risky days of pandemic, it's worth mentioning here, so other customers can possibly avoid such, the ways it can occur. Our take out order made at 6:45, and were told 45 mins to an hour. Show up at 45 min mark, make sure they know I'm here by telling one waitress my name etc, and waited in car when told it's coming soon. Maybe there's two full outdoor tables, about ten inside...three servers. About 15 mins rolls by, no word....mention to another waitress what's occurring, my order status, and another telling of "it's coming soon". My mother is at home, waiting to eat to take medications, and kids literally starving. Stuff happens, but I'm getting the 411 quickly. Been an hour now, no biggie...but I'm seeing walk up after walk up, for take out, getting served. After about five of these people being serviced, and 20 more mins, I realize I'm possibly being ignored. No word to me about me status, no quick nod or mention, no care, as they serve people and walk by me, time after time. Then, as I see a waitress, I ask again why I'm not being served after close to 1.5 hours has passed since we ordered...she says "you're bob, right?" ---same lady I told my name to a bit ago...and she should know, lol, I'M NOT BOB, if she cares at all about my order or me. I tell her, no, that's not who I am...she rudely walks away. Wtf? No apology, just that passive-aggressive bull where they tell you how busy they are, and to be patient, with the insinuation I AM WRONG FOR WANTING THEM TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY CAN'T DO WHAT THEY PROMISED, in the most modest of ways. You know, like I'VE BEEN PATIENT, CAN YOU JUST DO YOUR JOB - AND GET ME MY ORDER ASAP - WITHOUT MAKING ME FEEL LIKE I AM THE WRONG ONE HERE? WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST SAY IT MIGHT BY AN HOUR AND A HALF, ORIGINALLY? THEN, THIS WOULDN'T BE HAPPENING, Einstein!! To find out I'm order 103, and I'm watching orders 112-120 get served out of the kitchen window, I realize I'm NO ONE to them. This is where the experience at TOPO can and has been similar. Both restaurants serve good food, and therefore get themselves lots of customers, and then they can't deliver the food functionally (on time) from kitchens that seem overburdened. Eating at TOPO once every few moths, the experience has been almost identical at least three times in the past few years. You see orders that you KNOW came in after yours, going out to people/tables and you're left to wonder, if not suffer. And items are left out, or wrong, sometimes...that should be my biggest troubles, SHEESH! It's straight up, right? After about an hour of your order being mostly ready, in bags, and that ready food just sitting around, waiting for like one or two things you ordered that are taking forever, likely forgotten (since we've had incomplete orders too) - do you think your meal is eventually gonna be very good, once you get home? Predictably, take out is not always as optimal as eating it freshly made and served immediately, but c'mon...this was literally items like fried shrimp and noodles just ruined. Two pound hard clump of cold Malaysian pasta, anyone? Here's the kicker.. You get the food, finally coming out, and the waitress who called me Bob THROWS it on the ground, re-ups the tact of PASSIVE RUDENESS by telling me she is the injured party, not being spoken to properly. Yep, your food is dysfunctionally late, we're rude, and you're the problem. So, I ask for her manager...that's why you're reading this. JAY, the owner, stepped outside, but could care less. No apology, no care...just explaining how busy they are. Nope, Jay, sorry...you're wrong. I've seen that place busy, and tonight it was half full. Can't run the business well, period...and, in the end, they don't really care, with a solid customer base. They'll survive one upset, treated-like-crap customer review. Moreover...**** they have people working there who do NOT face mask, either at all, or properly. When my food was brought out, it was by that rude waitress, UNMASKED. The kid who helps, the owner's son, cool kid....but UNMASKED. Some of the kitchen staff was half-masked, noses exposed. It really shows when you don't care, and that's why this is written. Again, the food is solid and fresh, and I'm not fully deterred from going there. But it'll be a good six months before I can even attempt to wash this experience clean with another here. I ordered Mongolian beef with rice and it's just mediocre. The food was salty and all our dishes tasted the same. The service started off really good but it went downhill because one of their staff was injured. It's understandable that our waiter had a freak accident therefore the service is poor but this will not be the kind of place I'd like to dine in the future mainly because of the mediocre food. read more

I used to go here almost weekly starting around 2016. It has gone way downhill. The lunch I had today (lemon grass chicken)was disgusting with a few overcooked shreds of chicken and wilted and sad looking vegetables. Oh, and lots of rice. read more

I went there this weekend for dimsum. The selections were a little sparse and prices a touch on the high side. On the other hand, not sure there are better places for "dimsum" in the Hackettstown area. The dimsum is not bad, but you hardly traditional and you can definitely taste the influence of Thai/Indonesian spices. Take their sticky rice, all it has is carrots and mushrooms, but the spices make it a memorable dish. We also tried some Thai entrees and appetizers and those were spot on. Didn't leave room for dessert, so that's something I'll be looking forward to soon. The staff there was very pleasant and friendly. read more

The only reason why I am giving this place 2 stars is the first time I went there the food was decent, as well as the service, but that is when it first opened a couple of years ago. Now onto why I am giving this place two stars: My fiance and I went to eat here and the place was busy and it seemed that people called out sick as the owner was waiting on the tables as well as doing a million of other things. The service, was slow, and by the time we got our spring rolls, they seemed to be nuked a couple of times and a bit dry. I ordered the duck green curry while my fiance ordered the yellow vegetable curry. They both tasted all right, except my duck was NOT what I expected as being great. I had their green curry before, and something wasn't right. We got the check after an hour of waiting... luckily it wasn't a minute longer because my fiance became very ill as was I. I have a strong stomach and this was just not okay for me. I wish I could give it a good review, but this is a word of caution: if ANY place is short of people, they will cut corners on goodness knows what. read more

The food was excellent, but I could not enjoy it because the service was inattentive and rude. It was very crowded and loud inside so we asked to be seated outside. When we got there, we were left without enough plates, napkins and utensils. The sauces that came with the appetizers were very messy, so my shirt got dirty almost as soon as I sat down. When I went inside to ask for a plate, I was told to wait outside. When I said I would like to take a plate while I am here, I assumed they would be grateful because it would be one less trip for them, but no. Another waitress literally told me no, I cannot have a plate. Eventually, I got a plate, but my mood was spoiled. The waiter was too positive. He did not seem real or honest or willing to listen to any type of criticism whatsoever. When my mother ordered a water, he assumed that I wanted water too. He did not ask me what I wanted to drink. I did not get to order my drink until long after my companion's two waters came. Again, the food was excellent, That is the only reason I give it two stars instead of one. I haven't tasted Mangoaide quite like that since I was last in Hong Kong many years ago, but it was not an enjoyable experience. It's a shame, really. I'd like to go back, but I am simply afraid to. Finally, after we had paid, we were walking down the sidewalk to our car when the waitress who was cleaning up our table dumped the ice from our drinks onto the sidewalk, hitting my mother in the feet. I was glad to be able to shout: "YOU HIT MY MOTHER!" so all the other customers could hear, and I am glad to be able to post this here so others can read about this bad experience. Sometimes I feel that people are too afraid to be honest about their experiences. It is a very oppressive feeling to live under what many social critics have called a "tyranny of happiness." If I could give this place negative 5 stars, I would! The food was good but in the end, it was the customer service that lost our appetite! After incorrectly preparing two meals that we ordered and picked up, we called to advise them possibly get a credit back to our card. The woman who initially picked up argued with us and would not understand what we were saying but said she would give us the credit back. But then she put this man on the phone who I can only presume was the manager, who was by far the most unprofessional, rude restaurant manager I have ever encountered. Talked back, interrupted me and even gave me a sarcastic laugh in the end when I asked the credit to go back to the card, not towards the restaurant. I felt insulted and not respected as a customer. Which is why my family and I will never return. The food may be good but if you do not respect those that support your business, it does not even matter. The place was clean and the atmosphere was bright and inviting. I went for lunch with mother because she works very close to where I live. We both got tofu Pad Thai and it was off the charts amazing. My mother who is not a vegetarian, unlike myself who is, was in heaven. The serving size was perfect and it didn't sit in my stomach like a rock. It was also very affordable. Can't say to much about the service because there was really nothing wrong with the food and I had no problems. But Kevin (my server) was attentive and nice so I tipped him well. My mother and I, being new, asked a ton of questions and he gave us very informative answers. Even if you are not a local it is till worth coming in. We went on a Friday evening around 7:00 were seated right away. They serve these amazingly light chips with several dipping sauces. They will keep bringing them. Lol You will want more. Oh did I mention see the incredible aroma in here. The menu is full of a wide array of choices. Large portions you would expect to be taking some home but... So so good! Our server Emily was attentive, helpful, smiling and quick, anything we asked for arrived at our table always with a smile. We had a wonderful experience and will be returning. It is not the biggest restaurant in the world but don't be scared off it is really worth going. There is more seating than you would expect from the outside. Looking for a great place to go on a Friday eveningd for a date go here. All the food is made fresh so expect to wait a little bit of time but with an appetizer and those chips the time just flies by good conversation great food smiling server what more could you want come enjoy! My fiancé and I have been to the Pandan Room twice now and both meals have been very enjoyable! The service is prompt, friendly and knowledge. They have plenty of Vegan and gluten free options and everything we've had has been flavorful but not overpoweringly rich. I wouldn't say the restaurant is "cheap", as far as pricing. Entrees typically run about $15 a piece but we've always felt we got our money's worth! Definitely a must for restaurant stops in Hackettstown! read more

Damn, I hate giving Pandan Room this rating...found it about 6 months ago and we had made it our go to place for family birthdays and date nights. Have had quite a few large parties in there too. But...they just lost us as a customer. I'm so bummed. We are vegan & gluten free. They pride themselves on being veg & gf friendly. The first few times we were given meals with meat in it, we gave them a pass...because we loved it so much. Once we were actually lied too...we ordered these fried wonton thingys with spinach that our male waiter told us were vegan. As we were eating them, there was something cheesy in them so we asked him if it was cheese and he told us "no." Only later to find out that he lied. It was Asiago cheese. There were a few other incidents like that, but let's get to tonight. We got the same thing we always get, Pad Siew and ordered vegan/gluten free as usual. There was something additional in there-a protein that was not the tofu. We would have asked our waitress what it was earlier, but she was MIA for our entire meal. As she was cleaning our plates I asked her what it was. She didn't know so asked the chef. "Just a little egg" she said. I remarked "In a vegan meal?" She was then surprised that vegans don't eat eggs. Not to mention that even the non vegan version of this meal doesn't contain eggs. Ugh! The service. Besides the young man who lied about our cheese in the wontons over the summer, our service was always good. We normally get a woman with short black hair and glasses-she's delightful and accommodating. Tonight's service ranks up there with some of the worst we've ever had. I believe her name was Brooke or Brandi. She was never at our table long enough for us to get a good look at her nametag. Brooke/Brandi spent the majority of her time at another table of two. It took her 15 minutes to even take our order. Once we got our order, I wanted to get some chili sauce on the side, but since she NEVER came back to even ask us how our meal was, I had to yell for her as she crossed the room as she didn't even glance at our table. Another diner had to tell her to go to us. Oh and btw, the place was relatively empty. All we got for the egg was an apology. Nothing taken off the bill. So sad...I loved this place. Thank God we still have their sister restaurant Topo. THAT place has good CONSISTENT food AND great service! read more

My family were excited to find out there was a dim sum place closer to our home and, with a couple of people recommending this place, we couldn't wait. We got there and liked the way it looked outside with tables and flowers. When we got inside it was smaller and quaint with even a small bench with a couple of books. Unfortunately that was all that we liked about the place. There was no one that greeted us for several minutes (a group of 6 is hard to miss in tiny place like this one). Then we were moved to a tight fitting area even though there was a room that was practically empty (with only 2 people there). The table was dirty with bits of food still on it and the chairs were wet. No menus or mention of cost or items without us asking what the selection were. It took even longer for us to get the drinks. Weirdly enough, the first thing we got were dipping sauce (before we ordered anything, before utensils were given to us). When the girl came over with the cart of food, she nonchalantly lifted a crumpled sheet of foil, grabbed the containers of food, showed it while mentioning the food and then put them back one the cart in a tasteless almost clanking way. The food came before we got plates. The cart of food was all cold (you can tell it was cold just by looking at it). The cost of everything was ridiculous (a half a can of soda with half a glass full of ice was $2 and each tiny play of cold tasteless food was $4). The best thing about the food was the dipping sauce. Needless to say that it was unanimous that we would never come back again. read more
