After some evening events, I stopped into Old Ebbitt Grill for a final cocktail and some bar bites. The large pretzel was executed perfectly--crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, with a balanced amount of salt that wasn't overbearing. The cheese sauce was great for dipping, and the other side sauce had a nice little kick to it. I also ordered the house chili, which was solid and well-done, though nothing extraordinary. Having worked in the building for over a decade, I wanted to leave a reflection on a place I've frequented for so long. The staff here is consistently fantastic, managing the heavy crowds with ease. It remains one of those classic, high-energy spots in DC that carries a distinct "must-see" reputation. That said, I truly miss the old side takeout kitchen that used to operate in the atrium, serving breakfast and lunch to the building's workforce. It was a fantastic setup with daily chef-designed menus, and it was always busy, so it is a shame it didn't last financially. Even with that change, the main bar area remains a reliable, historic staple for a late-night drink and a bite.
Yeah, definitely one of those places to come to if in town. I am skipping straight to dessert and saying right now the carrot cake is top two in my book. I am watering at the mouth thinking about it. Texture, flavor, all of it, absolutely delicious. Lets get back to everything else now. Was a 45-60 minute wait so we went to the back bar which was recommended to us. Beautiful bar with artwork, and I liked the low light setting. Host said expect a text when table is ready. We enjoyed ourselves in the mean time not really looking at the time, but, it did feel strange that we were not called on after an hour. Did see some people being seated that were in the lobby with us so I was expecting soon. I eventually got up and asked and my guess is they took the wrong number down and or forgot about us. But they quickly sat us down and gave us a wonderful server, forgot the gentleman's name but he my only complaint was you could tell when he went out for a cigarette break. The food. - Chowder had amazing flavor. I like it thicker so I added the table bread to it which made it. - Pork chop was spot on. Nice thick cut and the char on top. Perfectly cooked. Leftovers made for a great morning snack before traveling home. - Side of Mac & Cheese, yum. Cheesy just as it should be. But yeah, definitely make a trip here if you can.
I have no clue what the hype is about everything was fine just mediocre. We had a reservation for a weekday lunch after looking at the museums. The host asked "Whose Birthday are we celebrating?" Only for our server to never inquire about it later nor did they do anything for dessert nor were we offered if we wanted to order dessert. Okay so we sit down and there's a hair on the plate at the table. We informed our server and all interactions with her she seemed annoyed and bothered. Never apologized nor said anything about the hair on the plate. The food, bland. We got the calamari which was pretty good found it unique to also have fried peppers in there. I got the Walters Favorite which is a hot pastrami sandwich. It was missing mustard or something to balance out the flavor profile it was just lackluster. Ruben was okay, and the horseradish mayo on the roast beef was too strong. The best thing was probably the oysters (not pictured). We were there for happy hour and got a discount. NOTE: their only happy hour offering is oysters, no drinks. The amount of times we had to flag our waitress down for everything was so frustrating. It was not that busy and Id see her chatting with a coworker on the side. We had to ask for EVERYTHING all while enduring her attitude or feeling like Im bothering her. When we closed out never told us once goodbye or have a good day. Old Ebbitt, please do the following: - Train your staff to prioritize customer service - Hire people that are friendly instead of cold - Season your food - Ensure cleanliness of the facility (forgot to mention, the bathroom had all kinds of paper on the ground!)
Such a classic Washingtonian institution! I have coming here since I was a child and love everything on the menu! We were lucky enough to walk in on a Friday night at 6 PM and we're sat immediately at a two top and have the sweetest waitress! She took such amazing care of us, even hearing my dad say in passing happy birthday to me, and brought out a dessert! The ambiance in old ebbits is just that of a different time, when drinking a martini at lunch and writing a Pulitzer Prize winning article at the same time was a thing! It's so classic
As a solo diner visiting DC, I could not have picked a better spot than Old Ebbitt Grill. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. The inside is huge, full of history, and has that classic old Washington charm that makes the experience feel special from the moment you walk in. I ordered the Reuben and it was absolutely delicious- perfectly balanced, flavorful, and comforting without feeling too heavy. The whipped potatoes were buttery and light, not overly salted and had great flavor! I also tried the oysters, which were incredibly fresh, clean tasting, and high quality with absolutely no fishy flavor. What really elevated the experience was the service. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and made dining solo feel comfortable and enjoyable. You can tell this place has mastered hospitality over the years. Awesome spot all around and easily one of my favorite dining experiences in DC. Highly recommend whether you're with a group or dining alone!
Quintessential DC dining experience! This restaurant is a five-star experience in terms of vibes, food quality, and overall experience. While our server was a little low energy, he was attentive and professional. We enjoyed all of the dishes and loved how we could have a table conversation in our booth without yelling, while enjoying the lively hub-bub around us. Will plan to return every time we're in DC!
Great spot, walkable from The White House. Lovely decor, kind of old school in a good way. Very family friendly! They have a reasonable kids menu with lots of options and it comes with a drink. The service was excellent - very patient with kids. I highly recommend making a reservation - it was very busy when we went for lunch. If you can't get a res, try to snag a seat at the bar. Grab a delicious drink while you're there.
What can be said that hasn't already been said about the Old Ebbitt Grill in Washington DC? The menu is diverse, unique and it's the place to see and be seen for the lunch hour or for dinner. Here's a pro tip, one that a lot of people know. But if you've never been... Lean in... The grill has four different bars with instant seating service in the event. You have a one or two hour wait, just say it it's worth it and it's good.
We arrived here without reservations on a weeknight and got on the waiting list. I've dined here in the past and enjoyed my dining experience here at the oldest restaurant in Washington D.C. The interior decor is beautiful and nostalgic with antiques; paintings and the bar have various taxidermy animal heads that the were caught by a by President Teddy Roosevelt. Our party dined on oysters, lump crab cake, scallops, pork chop and I went for the boneless ribeye. All the food was delicious, and we had a happy ending with the bourbon chocolate chip bread pudding. Service is professional and impressive. Overall, a great dining experience again, and I highly recommend the Old Ebbitt Grill.
Old Abbott Grill is a very classy establishment. with a long history in the Washington DC area. The inside is visually very appealing with wood heavy accents everywhere and beautifully decorated, which adds so much to the overall dining experience. The centrally located bar is absolutely stunning and oozes class adding to the overall ambience of this establishment. For our first meal here, which was during their brunch hour on a Sunday, we had crab cakes, shrimp, and their bacon cheeseburger. As appetizers we also got their zucchini chips and their large pretzel with cheese. All the food was well made and very tasty where our favorite was the crabcakes. Relative to the staff they were friendly, polite, and very professional about their business. Clearly an emphasis for this business was placed on having a first class wait staff, and it showed! Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here albeit at a higher cost than you would pay at many other establishments. The proximity to the White House, the history of the facility and quality of the food comes at a cost, but it was worth it in our opinion as this is a dinner we will remember for quite some time. Also, we had added satisfaction of bringing our grandchildren here where this was definitely viewed as a special occasion for them that grandma and grandpa arranged. Nice!
Old Ebbitt Grill was an awesome experience. The place has a really cool, historic vibe that feels like it hasn't changed in over 100 years--in the best way possible. You can tell there's a lot of character and history in every detail. The menu had a great variety of options, and everything we tried was solid and well-prepared. The food quality was definitely on par with what you'd expect from a spot like this. On top of that, the cocktails were excellent--perfectly balanced and made exactly right. Overall, it's a great mix of atmosphere, quality food, and well-made drinks. Definitely worth a visit.
This resturant was beautiful and packed even at 8 pm! It was a 90 min wait and worth it. We got the following: -Chowder 5/5: Savory, full of clams and great flavor. -Cheeseburger 3/5: Needed more seasoning on the patty itself but overall good burger. -Oysters Rockefeller 5/5: BOMB DOT COM! -Raw Oysters 5/5: We got pink moon and fortune oysters. The winner was pink moon! Clean, crisp and sweet! -Broccolini 4/5: Beautiful char. Just needed a pinch of salt! -Meatloaf 2/5: I did not like the flavor of this meatloaf. Wouldn't recommend. Only got it because others dining in ordered. We will definitely come back!

We had such a great experience at the bar at Old Ebbitt Grill during brunch. Our bartender, Delante, was fantastic--friendly, fast, and incredibly knowledgeable. From the moment we sat down, he made us feel genuinely welcome, like we were regulars at our local neighborhood bar. We ordered the crab Benedict, oysters, wings, beer, cocktails, and coffee--everything was absolutely delicious. Brunch cocktails with fresh oysters is always a win, but the highlight of our visit was truly the service. We're locals from Northern Virginia and have visited many times over the years, but Delante's hospitality really stood out. He made the experience fun, relaxed, and memorable. We'll definitely be back and hope to sit at his bar again! read more
I came here with family for lunch and we had a reservation which was good since it gets busy. I wanted to get the clam chowder, but it was hot outside so the chicken posole verde soup sounded better. I was told the crab cake was the item to get so that was a no brainer. The posole verde soup a bit pricey for the serving size but it was great. I have not had the verde version of posole before so take my review with that in mind but I thought it was flavorful. The lump crab cake was very good with mostly crab and hardly any filler which is why the price is high. It also came with fries and coleslaw. I enjoyed the coleslaw as it not too vinegary, sweet, or creamy. It was a good balance of flavors. As much as I really enjoyed the crab cake, I actually keep thinking about the posole soup! Service was attentive even with how busy it was. I had a great experience and wouldn't hesitate to go back. read more
Very nostalgic, and very busy, great food, great vibe and busy. We arrived around lunchtime and the wait for the table was 30-45 minutes, we chose the bar, just enough room to eat but very entertaining, I can only imagine how many deals were brokered here. Fanatics food, Bartenders rock!! read more
Old Ebbit is an institution in DC, and for a large group of professionals, it was an ideal place for dinner! Our large party started with reservations for 6, but grew to 11 and the hostesses accommodated each of our additions with grace. Our server was amazing and took care of us with professionalism and good humor. Our appetizers were prompt and drinks were refilled quickly. The meatballs and crab cakes were the hit appetizers, both hot and flavorful. The crab cakes were large chunks of real crab and held up to their iconic hype. All entrees were enjoyed and complimented, and my own horseradish glazed meatloaf was tender and juicy. Dessert was accompanied by espresso martinis, and again- enjoyed by everyone. Old Ebbit is an iconic location, and truly a great place for large groups visiting the area! read more

I've always heard that this place has been very well-known and unforgettable. We walked in and it was very busy on a Thursday at 5 PM. We were actually afraid that we were not gonna get a seat. I had no idea that this place had two floors and extensions on the left and the right on the main floor. They happily seated us within 30 seconds to a booth all for ourselves. It took about five minutes for the waiter to come to us, but we were already ready for our order. The crabcakes were delicious and so was the rib. The mustard for the pretzel was very spicy and opens up the nasal cavities! Just a warning! The bathrooms are downstairs and there it looks to be a special room for private events? Would love to know the answer for this. All in all, the atmosphere is electric there screaming old money and importance. Hard to give this place less than five stars. We were in DC and this place came highly recommended! This place was awesome! It's very comfortable and welcoming! Our waitress was very friendly and engaging but I can't recall her name! My wife ordered her dirty martini and I ordered a bourbon manhattan! Wifey was stoked to order a dozen raw oysters! She worked with the waitress to get the kind she wanted (briney)! She loved the selection, and we were early enough to get them for 1/2 price! I ordered the clam chowder which was good, but a little bland! I ordered a single crab cake with fries and waitress suggested a side Cesar salad which was good but too much food! Wifey ordered the Mussels in a broth! Wifey absolutely LOVED her selection! Old Ebbitt Grill is a DC institution and I have been here many times. I knew that I had to bring my family here on our most recent trip to DC. You have to plan ahead and get a reservation well in advance. I waited too long and could not get a reservation for dinner so we ended up coming for lunch. That worked out just fine. They have a very solid lunch menu and the prices are slightly less for some lunch items. Old Ebbitt Grill is very close to the White House in Lafayette Square. It is the oldest saloon in Washington DC and some version of it has been around since the 1850s. It is said that some of the taxidermy on the walls was bagged by Theodore Roosevelt himself, which is really cool. They are famous for their crab cakes, which is what my husband ordered. He enjoyed it. He enjoyed the clam chowder even more. My son enjoyed the kids spaghetti which he was able to add meatballs to. I had the pastrami sandwich and it was excellent with the pumpernickel bread. The fries are like double battered fries with extra crispiness, which were really good as well. My favorite thing on previous visits has been the pork chop. Unfortunately, that is not available at lunch, but if you come for dinner, I highly recommend it. This place is a DC institution for a reason. You should definitely check it out. read more

Service: Many Servers, common outcome. From my time of being here, there were about 5 people stopping by my table to check in and take orders. It felt a little disorganized but it did mean that things were getting done. Food: Dozen Oysters - Happy Hour Special! I loved the options they had for oysters! my favorite was the Pink Moon (medium with slight sweetness). All were clean and not sandy/broken shells Crab & Artichoke Dip - Creamy! The best app in my opinion. The subtle texture from the crab and the full creaminess leaves a great mouthfeel Sticky Toffee Pudding - Favorite dessert! the chocolate chips gives the toffee pudding a crunchy texture while everything else is decadent On to my next adventure... read more
Going to Old Ebbitt Grille is always a staple of any trip to DC. The selection of Oysters that they have are fantastic. Some sweet, some larger, some salt-forward and more traditional. I suggest you get a dozen and pair it with champagne so the flavors complement and support each other. The meatballs (beautifully paired with polenta) are a great appetizer and with the mega Pretzel are bob but a great pair with beer. The Harvest Salad is a great portion as a meal itself and perfectly connects to the charred cauliflower. The most amazing bartender named Sadie made some of the highest quality of manhattans for us. AMBIANCE: A lovely warm and friendly ambiance. Upscale, cozy, welcoming atmosphere FOOD & DRINKS: We ordered an assortment and nothing disappointed. Everything was delicious and worthwhile. I was surely satisfied with every single thing! - Meatballs were soft and flavorful and super cheesy. I asked for an extra side of marinara to balance it out. - Roasted turkey sandwich. Bread was perfectly chewing and crispy, good and delicious, well rounded sandwich! - Dozen raw oysters: So fresh and delicious! - Espresso martini: Done well!!! So good. SERVICE: All the staff were very friendly. We sat at the bar, so service was great and the bar staff were attentive. Highly recommend. I had a wonderful and pleasant time here. This is such a delayed review. We visited back in June 2024, funny enough from Sacramento, California and our amazing bartender was also from there!!! Small world. We had a great lunch here with such a fun conversation with our bartender Paul P (thanks for all the recommendations!!) We ordered 24 oysters, all delicious and fresh, 2 very delicious drinks, I can't remember what my husband ordered but I had probably my favorite lavender lemon drop I've ever had. (Again, thanks Paul!) for lunch my husband ordered the bacon cheeseburger which he inhaled, and I got the fried chicken sandwich with a side Cesar. Everything came out promptly and delicious. If we lived closer, we would be here so much more often. Thank you again for the wonderful time. read more

The Old Ebbit Grill is a must when visiting DC as it carries so much history and it feels like you're stepping back in time. The inside is beautifully decorated with velvet seats and the main bar has Victorian elegance with animal trophies that were supposedly caught by Teddy Roosevelt himself. Our waiter was very attentive and offered us some great recommendations. I ordered the meatloaf which was absolutely delicious. Dessert was even better. Went in for a post photo shoot brunch on a Sunday at 11:30. The ambiance was nice and not overly stuffy...not busy at all and the staff were very friendly. Our server Jack was fantastic and so too was the steak, eggs, and breakfast potatoes. Katama Bay oyster shooter was tasty and the crab and artichoke dip was fantastic. This place was quaint and old school. I could picture the young staff of different political offices/ figures hitting it for after work drinks. However, we were there for breakfast which was amazing. Highly recommend the homemade biscuits bc they were the best and warm. The avocado BLT was delicious and filling. I wasn't hungry until dinner time. Our waitress was friendly and went above and beyond-- she got my coworker a taste of grits and made some good recommendations when asked! read more
Had lunch at Old Ebbitt and throughly enjoyed my time there. I arrived shortly after 12 and took a seat at one of the bars. My bartender/server Steven was exceptional, quick witted, terrific service, a true professional. I had the single crab cake with fries and Cole slaw that was a delight with every bite. The crab cake was like 95% crab and the fires and slaw were perfect. As a visitor to DC this was a must stop and so happy I did. read more

I came here for dinner before the Michael Jackson musical. We had a reservation and we're seated in the atrium. It was very interesting of an atmosphere, but was lovely. Very well lit with natural lighting, but not warm and cozy feeling, like the rest of the establishment. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious! I ordered the single crab cake meal with French fries, no salt! The sauce for the crab cake was delectable! My fries were so freaking good, too! This place is a must for everyone. It's the oldest saloon in DC and super popular! Either make reservations, prepare to find bar seating or prepare for a wait. We came at 7:30pm and it was packed. We ended up getting seated in the atrium which has not quite the same atmosphere as the indoor seating but it's better than waiting a long time for a table! We ended up getting two dozen raw clams (highly recommend btw), the steak fries, the meatloaf, and kids spaghetti. Kids meals are $10 nd come with a side, beverage and the entree. The steak fries was perfectly cooked at medium rare, and the meatloaf came with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Can I also say the bread thar came with the meal was so amazing?!? This was an amazing meal all around. Don't miss this place! read more

This restaurant was absolutely amazing. We stopped by during the lunch rush and expected to wait and have delays but the place operates like a well oiled machine. The food came out promptly and everything was amazing. All of the staff we encountered were warm and polite and extremely professional. Interested to try some of the other restaurants in their umbrella. It's not the quietest place for lunch but the food is definitely worth it. read more
What can you say about this icon? It's a great experience through and through. The atmosphere hardens back to the day when smoke, leather, and wood were prolific in the area. The food is great, although the Jaeger Schnitzel was a bit over cooked for my liking. On the dry side, but still flavorful and the gravy was to die for. It's not the best I've had, but it was satisfying. The deviled eggs were the real star of the show and the service was top notch. The next visit will have to be the steak and I cant wait to go back! read more
Stopped by old rabbit for some oysters and an old fashion. Very friendly staff at the door, directed me right to the bar. Place was very busy but the bar tenders were very attentive. Historic old world charm ambience. Established in 1856, Old Ebbitt Grill is Washington DC's oldest saloon. Go for the Oysters Rockefeller, the Bloody Mary, Martini cocktails at the bar, the Lobster, the Burger, the Scallops, the Key Lime pie. Admire the staff's red suspenders. Within walking distance to the White House, the Washington memorial, and many historical sites. Definitely worth a stop by. 5 stars. read more

This restaurant was recommended to me as one of the places to eat when visiting Washington DC. The restaurant was a larger than I expected with a lots of seating. Despite coming on a Sunday around brunch/lunch time, we only had to wait 5-10 minutes for a table. Our server was very kind in explaining their favorite dishes and recommended drinks that went along with the dishes we ordered. We got the Chicken and Waffles, Steak and Eggs, and Anchovies (from the tinned seafood section). There was nothing particularly unique about the dishes and it came out as expected, but everything was cooked well and tasted delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant in general, but definitely for those that are visiting Washington DC! read more

Cool vibes, easy to make a rez online. I dream about their crab cakes. The crab cake sandwich was so so good. We also got the deviled eggs with fried oysters (yum!) and a side of asparagus (probably seasonal). But the crab cakes were the star and I'll always be tempted to go here for them when I'm in DC. My coworker brought me here during my 1st visit to DC & I enjoyed it so much that I returned the following day. The drinks are on point, always. I have eaten here numerous times over the years when visiting DC, and this was the first time the service was subpar. The main server must have been having a bad day and probably should have called out for the day. Most of the other staff, from the Host to the team, who provided water, did a great job. The food has always been consistently good as it was on this visit as well. read more
Have been wanting to come here for awhile. We didn't have a problem making a reservation for 4 people for a Friday evening. My friend and I showed up before our other friends and were waiting for them. Our server was great and reminded us that we had a couple minutes before happy hour ended so we put in a an order of 18 oysters. For our dinners, we ordered the Bell & Evans Half Chicken, the Summer Market Salad, Walter's Favorite and the OEG Classic Burger. Service was fairly quick and everything was delicious, I don't believe that we had any complaints. There was some lag in service but it was fairly busy. We did have to stop her for the check in the end. We did also order the blueberry cobbler at the end and that was also delicious although it was definitely big enough to share between the 4 of us. Overall, everything was delicious and I do look forward to coming back. read more

First off, our waiter Chris was amazing! He was cordial and provided wonderful feedback on selections on the menu as well as gave us some great ideas for our trip here in DC. As for the food, it was absolutely delicious. My daughter had the scallops which were off menu item for lunch, but the chef was willing to make it to for her as it is normally just a dinner item. I had the muscles, which were absolutely ridiculously good. The wine garlic sauce, and gas stove, toasted bread to dip was reminiscent of a sexual experience. When in DC, have to eat here!! We popped in for lunch and had an amazing experience. We were seated right away and the staff were friendly and professional. The restaurant is old and I well kept and gives the old-school vibe of the east coast steakhouses with dark wood and elegant table settings. The restaurant can seat quite a crowd and there is still room to walk around. We ordered the scallops and burger. We also had bread service with butter, which was nice. I definitely would love to go back and enjoy other items. It's tough though when you have little time and so many other great dining places. Enjoy! read more
This is a fantastic restaurant. My wife and I came here with a friend in May while visiting town for a conference and we really enjoyed our meal here. The drinks were great and service was excellent throughout the meal. I had a ribeye that was delicious and my wife had the spicy sausage pasta that she loved. Desserts were also delicious (I got peanut butter pie and she had a pavlova) and this was just an overall delicious meal. We'd 100% return here again and can't recommend it enough! read more

Can i go together with my baby(8months)?
When there in the spring, I saw several strollers and young babies, toddlers. Staff and patrons seemed quite accommodating.
Do they still serve lobster?
Not currently, but it may return depending on the season.
What's the dress code?
I asked them when we went and they said, everything from a tux to shorts and a t shirt. So, it is whatever you would like. From the feel, though, it's a sort of business casual.
Is it quiet during dinner time? Is it a good place for a date?
I think it'd absolutely be a great place for a date! It's a beautiful location, they have delicious food that's served attractively and the service is great too. I would take a date there, but my wife would get angry...
Is the happy hour only at the bar? Should I make a reservation for the late night happy hour?
As far as I know happy hour pertains to the bar (at least when I've gone), but they have at least four bars- one in each room upstairs. I can't remember if there's a bar downstairs.… Read more
