This is a fantastic restaurant. My wife and I came here with a friend in May while visiting town for a conference and we really enjoyed our meal here. The drinks were great and service was excellent throughout the meal. I had a ribeye that was delicious and my wife had the spicy sausage pasta that she loved. Desserts were also delicious (I got peanut butter pie and she had a pavlova) and this was just an overall delicious meal. We'd 100% return here again and can't recommend it enough! read more

A friend and I had dinner here two different nights during our stay. The first time I ate at the Old Ebbitt I had the Duroc Pork Chop. The pork chop is huge and amazing! It is one of the best pork chops I've ever had. My second visit I had steak frites. Steak was cooked perfectly with no fat and full of taste! My friend had cheese plates during both trips and oysters during one trip. The place in general is huge! We were able to get a seat at the back bar both nights. Sunday night around 7 we sat right down. Tuesday around the same time we had to wait 10-15 minutes to get a seat at the bar. Bartenders were extremely friendly both evenings and poured a quality cocktail. Old Ebbitt has a great vibe, close to the White House and very friendly customers/staff. This joint is classic. Been here since 1856? Old school interior and feel. A few things that make the Old Ebbitt a keeper. They're open til 2:00 am and sling grub til 1:00 am. Perfect for us as we walked all over the National Mall til 10:30 pm and were hungry. Even at 10:30 pm, it was a 20 minute wait. Place was packed...which was a good sign. The food is excellent as is the drink. Got the bacon cheeseburger (very good), caesar salad (excellent), and a dirty martini (excellent). On a side note, the pickle that comes with the burger is also top shelf. Seriously. Service is solid and the prices are reasonable. Seating is pretty intimate. If you don't get a booth, you'll be shoulder to shoulder with new friends. A must eat in the area. read more

In DC for a conference last week and we decided to try something new. We had hit similar places last year and didn't want to have to expend a tremendous amount on dinner. We were wanting seafood and one of our other conferences attendees said they had been to Ebbitt's a few nights ago. I made a reservation at the last minute and got us in at 5:00. When we got there we were promptly seated and able to order just as happy hour was closing out. I started with an ice cold Yuengling and it was perfect! That coupled with fresh bread and butter who could want more. I tried the oyster sampler and it was really awesome and I enjoyed the fresh horseradish in my cocktail sauce. The oysters were served over ice and were properly shucked - no shell and oysters off the shell. Without even having to ask our server had brought me a bottle of Tabasco. She was by the way an exceptional server. The pic says it all. My coworker ordered the mussels which were served with a very crunchy garlic bread. We also ordered calamari which was very well done. Lightly coated and fried - served with a nice dipping sauce. My coworker also ordered the salmon salad and it looked amazing as well! Ebbitts sure does a business as it was packed when we got there and folks still standing waiting to get seated. The restaurant was a bit loud but we still enjoyed our meals. A classic DC haunt, as close to the white house as you can get for a meal, the place was absolutely packed. Despite having a reservation, we waited ~15 minutes in an extremely crowded entryway. The restaurant is huge though, stretching really far back so they did work through that crowd in a fairly reasonable time. We started with some cocktails. I had a rum and scotch mixture which was quite good, really smooth without being overly boozy. When our server said they're known for their manhattan and old fashion and negroni and martinis, i was very suspect because at that point you just listed everything which means you can't be known for any of those things. The food was also pretty good. I can't eat oysters but the table got some oysters that were enormous. Some of the largest oysters they'd ever seen. Said they were tasty too. I got the salmon and some calamari which are simple enough to execute but they were tasty. Nothing blew me away, nothing was so unique or amazing, but everything was good. This was the restaurant I choose for our 17 anniversary as we are in DC to tour the town. I had booked few nights before on opentables for 9:30pm and they had an opening at 8:30pm on Saturday and I took it for that earlier time. I also noted on OpenTable that it is for anniversary, I am a little disappointed that the waitress did not ask or checked the details of our visit if we ever been there before, I know it was a busy evening but it was a missed opportunity. There were so many good review and recommendation from people about this place and it was only 2 blocks from where I was staying and that made it an easy pick. As we walked in there were plenty of people waiting to be seated, it took maybe 10min for our seat even with reservations so that's not bad. The place is busy and everyone seems to enjoy it, tons of space, it's a darker lighting inside which is fine, it has many decoration and it looks very classic and nice. We ordered the calamari, double crab crakes, swordfish, meatball, and a kids pasta with meatball. The Calamari was fresh and crisp, it have a big whole piece in the mix, my wife liked it. It was ok for me. The crab cake was excellent, this is coming from us been eating Maryland crab cake so we know what a good crab cake should taste like. My son loved the meatballs and my daughter loved her pasta, on a side note the coke was very tasty for some reason. My swordfish was excellent, it was fresh and tasty. We didn't have room for dessert because we were already very full. To service was good and quick, I just wish they noticed that it was our anniversary if they had only pay attention on our reservation or asked. Overall I recommend this place, but because I am a foodie I would go try other place next time I am in town. read more

Very historical dining establishment here in Washington D.C.! I believe it is the oldest restaurant in the area that is still operating. Unfortunately, you can definitely tell how old the restaurant is when you walk in due to the odor. Being in such an iconic place, I didn't mind it too much. The server was great by offering up knowledge/history on the place. Lots of food options. I ordered the clam chowder, summer market salad w/salmon, hummus, and half rack of ribs. We were in town for a group trip in mid-June and wanted a nice dinner for Friday night. They accommodated us very well - we were in the 'overflow' section in the back of the restaurant and were happy to be there as it was a bit less noisy than the rest of the restaurant. There was a group of 7 of us, and we all got different items off the menu - nothing disappointed. i ordered a dirty martini (delicious) and had the steak frites for my meal. It all started in 1856 when innkeeper William E. Ebbitt bought a boarding house. Several presidents stayed there. The place looks like a Victorian saloon from the turn of the century. My first reaction was the decor which I can only describe as: Romantic, classic, a perfect place for a first time date or for treating that special someone! The service was impeccable. I had no idea that this establishment was part of the Clyde's Restaurant Group. Then I looked at the menus of the various restaurants like Clyde's, The Hamilton, and Fitzgerald's they have similar items on their menus. I found this out as someone mentioned that going to the other establishments you might find some variations of items and prices when compared to Old Ebbitt Grill. This place was packed but the hostess was able to get us in and it was about a 5 minute wait. This place is basically first come serve so if you have a large group it is a roll of the dice. The service was very good. As usual I cannot remember the name of the server who assisted us but it was the right amount of checking to see if all is well. I especially like that he did not ask a question of how the food is when it is just dropped off at your table or when you have a mouth full of food. I started with the usual calamari and it was fried light and crispy and the drizzle of lemon juice over it added a nice bit of flavor as always with seafood. The steak frites were my main course that came with a sauce on top that was described as Dijon. For my personal taste the sauce did not really add or take away from the steak. The sauce was describe as dijon and shallot flavor but I really was not picking up on any of that. I admit that I peeked over at another table and saw the burger and reuben sandwiches and I know I will be ordering one of those two when visiting again. Overall this is a place I don't think you will be disappointed by but also in my opinion it's not a place that will be top on my list to come back and visit. If in the area it is an option but there is plenty of stiff competition from similar places. The biggest thing that makes this place standout is the fact its name is always mentioned when it comes to the history of the area and its oyster eating contest. We visited Washington DC recently and jumped at the opportunity to eat at Old Ebbitt Grill, the oldest saloon in DC (founded in 1856)! The ambiance was cozy but upscale, our server was friendly and pleasant and gave some amazing menu recommendations. For drinks, we started with a Pear-isian cocktail and an Old Fashioned. We also snacked on some crab and artichoke dip and raw oysters - all fantastic! For our mains, we had the short rib stroganoff and ribeye (subbed the mashed potatoes for fingerling potatoes) with Chimichurri and sautéed kale - everything was so delicious and cooked to perfection! I've always heard about how difficult it is to dine here. If you make a reservation you'll be just fine. I called beforehand and the young lady who answered placed a lot of emphasis on "We're not busy not, however that can change." We got mobile and arrived and were seated within five minutes. Parking in this area is a challenge as it's near a lot of tourists hot spots. Dimly lit so please be aware of that first stair when following your hostess to your seat. The bathrooms are located on the lower level and those stairs could be a doozy depending on your footwear. When in doubt, hold the handrail and make your decent. Our server Mike was attentive, professional and funny. He was knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. I arrived already knowing that I wanted to try the Duroc Pork Chop. It did not disappoint. The portion was generous and no complaints about the price. Seating along the wall can be within close quarters of the neighboring diners so pack your patience. The other items ordered were very good as well. The calamari was piping hot and it does have peppers (which I like) and the garnished greens have a vinaigrette that made them a yummy adornment. The key lime pie was good but did not floor me. I've had key lime pie that you can tell was made with true Key limes from FL. This is a good option for date nite, solo dining and group settings. There is a bar serving alcohol and bar seating. Televisions are available for you sports fans who like to dine and watch the game. If you know you'll have more than two people, just make a reservation to make it easy on yourself. If you're unable to be accommodated, this location is part of a family of restaurants that share similar menu items (The Hamilton, and Clyde's). A military discount is available with appropriate identification. If in the area, I'd dine here again as it was an enjoyable experience. read more

The place is a landmark in the Washington DC area. It offers an excellent dinning experience. We started off with the unique Grapefruit Brûlée. The Clyde's Blend regular coffee, which is blend of Central and South American coffees, which is a unique combination of caramel and dark chocolate with a faintly floral aftertaste and a clean finish. Its medium acidity and smooth, medium body are brought into balance by Quartermaine Coffee Roasters' signature roast. We had the steak and eggs and are excellent, a 8 oz New York strip with two (I had scrambled, my wife had sunny side up) with a fantastic Béarnaise sauce with home fried. They also have an amazing unique omelets that is topped with chili, cheese, sour cream with chopped scallions. They offer several fruit beverages and Iced Tea as well as the vast offerings of hot beverages. They truly have some unique offerings with desserts. I had the Bourbon-Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding, which is cover in a salted caramel sauce, topped with vanilla ice cream. My wife had the Bourbon-Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding. I have to say it is one of the best bread puddings ever. The service at this place is just as high class as you would expect, the ambiance is likewise relaxing. Old Abbott Grill feels like the older and more established cousin of Clyde's-similar classic American menu, but with an extensive raw oyster selection. This restaurant, according to my niece was real fancy. She enjoyed her crabcake sandwich platter, and I enjoyed my strong Mai tai and grilled scallops and succotash. The pork chop was so delicious and tender with a topping that olives I think that really helped to cut through the rich flavor and fattiness of the pork chop. It paired so wonderful. The sweet potato was delicious. The brussel sprouts were soft but the bacon helped with the crunch. The only reason this is 4 stars is the pork chop as I got closer to the bone was almost raw. I could not get my server to come back because I was going to ask them to microwave it. I was sad that I could not finish my entire pork chop. read more

I can only comment on the food as I did a to-go. Upon arrival it was clearly a busy Tuesday night because the place was packed. I was greeted by the hostess who told me I could pick up my order at the bar. So I went to the bar area and stood around as three servers passing. I finally spoke up and asked where to pick up my to go order. The server told me with a bartender at the bar. Well the bar area was absolutely packed and made getting a bartender's attention rather hard. Once I did get his attention I told him my name and received my order. I've been for brunch, lunch, dinner, and drinks - all are an excellent choice. This may be the only place in the world I will order a crab cake and feel confident it will be as good as I can make at home (I may have gotten spoiled living in NOLA for 10+ years with local jumbo lump crab available at the Farmers Market). Service has always been very good, ambience can vary depending on which dining area you're seated but the bar area has always been a favorite and the bartenders are REALLY good at not only making drinks but making everyone feel like they're a valued guest. I can never get past a few things on their menu...the meatloaf - epic! The fried chicken sandwich- love the bread and butter pickles, so juicy and delicious, and I'm a sucker for the zucchini chips and fried green tomatoes. Think zucchini is better of the two. Best part? Slurping it all down with a perfectly poured Guinness. Service is always prompt and polite. Waitstaff tend to be amusing. They take good care of you. I just love the whole experience.
