I traveled to Ogunquit this weekend with a friend who is not a fan of seafood. An anti-seafood person in Maine is quite tragic, but fortunately I was able to talk her into dinner at Ogunquit Lobster Pound and assured her they offer a full menu to appease land lubbers. This one was 'bookmarked' for quite some time. I was drawn to the building's cabin-like appearance set back a bit from the main road. It looks like a little camp nestled amongst tall pines, very quaint and inviting. The restaurant allows you the option to select your own lobster from the large pool, which greets you as approach the entrance. To the left of the lobster pool is a set of three doors each designated with a label to take you to your intended destination. It reminded me of a "Choose Your Own Adventure" novel. We decided to dine indoors, therefore we entered the door marked "hostess". Once inside, it appeared the doors all led to the same lobby area. It seemed a bit busy and confusing in the lobby, but we survived. Last summer I had attempted my first visit to this restaurant on a weekend, only to be disappointed by the news of a 1.5 hour wait time for a table. Last night we decided to arrive right at its opening time, 4:30pm, and we were seated quickly. The restaurant soon filled after we arrived, so be sure to plan accordingly. The dining area is large and the interior offers a rustic, camp-like appearance. I felt as though I were dining in an oversized cabin with its large stone fireplace and wood paneling. I was craving a lobster roll and my friend decided on the chicken sandwich. As we filled up on bread and awaited our food, I secretly admired an older couple at the next table. They sported their plastic bibs and stared in amazement as two lobsters arrived at their table. "Isn't this just wonderful?" the woman exclaimed to her husband. I imagine this restaurant is probably a tradition for many. It is like stepping back in time, but in a very charming way. I also noticed that the neighboring couple's lobster shells had already been cracked open in the kitchen - how convenient! My lobster roll was good. Light mayo and the roll grilled and buttered perfectly. I wish it were larger and a little more stuffed to fairly reflect its price tag, yet can there ever truly be enough lobster? In this restaurant's defense, I am forever spoiled by the most amazing lobster roll I had ever eaten at a famous Maine landmark. Since that day, no others can compare. I also bit into a piece of shell, which is never pleasant. My friend commented that her sandwich was "very good and the chicken was cooked perfectly." Good to know if you happen to be a non-seafood person, but shame on you if that's the case. Our server was friendly and efficient. I'm granting Ogunquit Lobster Pound about 3.5-4 stars and do plan on returning. I think this is a place that I will continue to enjoy, especially when dining with fellow seafood lovers. I envision another evening here in the near future including a round of steamers, a pair of lobsters, and a bottle of wine. read more

Each time we've gone up to Maine, I've seen this place across the street from Egg and I, and wanted to try it. However, we never got the chance. This time, I insisted. Spent $140 including tip and steamers for later here, and will be coming back. Family of four, we ate very well! I tried the lobster stew. It was very creamy and buttery... And honestly a little bit of heaven. The atmosphere reminds me more of a steakhouse/lodge style restaurant, but I love that kind of thing, so I give them a pass on the clash! This is definitely a higher-end place in terms of price, but you walk away happy with a full belly. After dinner, we went outside and ordered a pound of fresh steamers to go. We ate those the next day. Absolutely delicious! All in all, I love this place! This will definitely be a goto next time we're in Maine. read more

Apparently the thing to do when you're in Maine is to eat lobster. Who knew? The Lobster Pound has a full menu with a good variety of option from meat to pasta. But who cares about that. You're getting the lobster. Once you order this and your two sides (mashed potatoes, coleslaw, green beans, or baked beans), the waitress gives you a number and you go outside and let the (really cute) lobster guys know how big you want it. We got 1.5 pounders with the hard shell because the waitress claimed hard shell lobsters have more meat than soft shell. They're also more expensive. But we're here for the Maine experience, so more lobster meat is what we're gonna get. The lobster bros fish out each victim and weigh it in front of you. Make sure not to get too attached to the wriggling crustacean because in 20 minutes it will be slit open and sitting on your plate, hot and ready for devouring. They claim that the lobsters are boiled in Ogunquit River water, which adds sweetness to the meat. Maybe they just add sugar to the water, but boy Billy was delicious (okay, so maybe I did get a little attached). We also ordered some steamed clams, which the bros fished out of the pool and cooked on the spot. You literally can't get any fresher than that. The restaurant's atmosphere is very casual. It reminded me of a camp lodge with it's wooden tables and paper place mats. The service was fine, but the food's timing was a bit off, as we ordered artichoke dip as an appetizer, but the lobsters appeared in front of us before the dip even came, so we cancelled our order. We put on our plastic lobster bibs, and dug in. My sides, the green beans and the baked beans (I guess I'm a bean girl), were good but not outstanding, as the green beans had the right amount of crunch but lacked some flavor and the baked ones were tender but a bit heavy on the molasses. But whatever. Don't get distracted by the sides. You should just focus on the lobster anyway. For dessert, we ordered a blueberry pie a la mode. It was a good way to end our Maine-focused meal since it was made with those teeny Maine berries, although it was a bit watery for my taste. But everything tastes good with a scoop of ice cream on top, so it disappeared pretty quickly. For all this food (plus 2 bottles of sav blanc), the price was very affordable! I'd say the Lobster Pound is a great bet to get a taste of Maine. RIP Billy the Lobster. You were delicious. read more

I've been to many lobster pounds throughout Maine and this one will provide your quintessential experience albeit a little more upscale than most. I mean, you have restaurant style indoor seating for goodness sake! Personally I prefer the more rustic ones where you can watch them unload the traps, bring the lobsters in, pick the ones you want and have them cook it for you in a big barrel in the parking lot! Then eat it with gusto at a picnic table with the butter dripping down your chin but hey, that's my preference. Doesn't mean it's yours. The setting here is very nice with the huge pines providing a woodsy feel. Almost looks like someone's camp. Some well to do person's camp. Inside is a huge restaurant where you can order pretty much anything you or your family might want. So it, again, is a step beyond what I think of when I envision a lobster pound. Pricing is higher here than at other places along the coast but I attribute that to it being in Ogunquit where a lot of things are pricier. But the lobsters are certainly fresh and taste fantastic!! read more

Came here with the family on a recent trip in the New England area. The place is nice - decor a bit on the old side, but wood is a pretty timeless feature. Let's dive right in (no pun intended). The food - maybe it's because I'm not a local but the lobsters were delicious, got to step out to the pound and pick my own! The meat was springy and perfectly steamed. The mussels and clams were also equally delectable. Couldn't recommend the seafood enough. However, the lobster stew was expensive and although it came with nice chunks of lobster was a bit too buttery, almost oily. And the sides and service were forgettable to be honest. The price was reasonable by UK standards, but a bit of the hefty side for the region. Would probably shop around next time! read more

Went here this Saturday for my birthday dinner as I always have lobster on my birthday and it was awesome! We were seated right away and explained the whole process. I loved being able to pick out my lobster and get the size I want. I ordered the lobster dinner and a 1/2 order of steamers. They timed it perfectly that I was able to get my steamers as an appetizer and my lobster as my meal. The steamers were great, all the shells opened and I only had one funky one, great flavor. The lobster obviously was the best part. It was so good! It was wonderful that they pre-crack it for you, I never even had to use a utensil to help myself with it except the wood poker they give you, and it was a hard shell lobster! The best part is I asked for extra butter and they brought me out a bigger bowl of it, it was wonderful!! The only downside was the rice pilaf was just okay, and my ginger ale was very syrupy, which their fountain probably just needs to be recalibrated but they were quick to replace it when I asked for a Pepsi instead. The cole slaw which I got for my other side was very good as you could tell it was homemade and it was nice and cold, the way it should be. An Ogunquit staple! My family has been coming here for many, many years. Because this place is so popular there is usually a wait - so come early, come late, or come ready to have a drink or two in the bar area while you wait. Once seated, anyone at the table ordering steamers or lobster is given a ticket and directed to the tanks outside. You tell the guys what size lobster you would like and they pick one out of the tank to be boiled right away. There are many different side options to go with your meal although these can be a bit bland - honestly though, once I eat a 2 lb. lobster I am not really in the mood for rice or veggies anyway! There are other seafood (and non-seafood) options on the menu although I can't comment on these as I always, always, always get the lobster. Went there the other night while on vacation in Ogunquit. The food was fabulous, but there must have been a vent directly over our table because cold air kept blowing on us. We asked the hostess if she could turn it off. She said she would find out how it was controlled but she never got back to us. The air kept blowing and no one even offered to find us another table. The bad: A tourist trap type of place as the lobster is premium priced (currently $19.99 per pound - ouch) and there was no corn on the cob to be had. The good: Whitney the waitress was cute as a button and efficient and we were able to pick out our own live lobsters which they boiled for us. The lobster chowder was excellent and we also enjoyed a few pounds of steamers. The prices were very high but that's what you get in the midst of summer and many tourists in the area. Had an excellent 3lb lobster, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. Everything we ordered was well made and fresh. The atmosphere was rather like a vintage cafeteria -- a giant room with a bunch of tables. It was a bit loud, but clean and cute. The lobster tank out front was fun for the kids and adults to observe the lobsters (just as long as you don't think too hard about their fate). The staff were all very nice and did their jobs well. The parking lot fills up quickly. We were lucky to arrive just before the rush. This place reminded me of the mess hall at my Girl Scout camp as a kid. Food was definitely not from the same mess hall. I had the lobster Alfredo for dinner. Although it costed more then my sister in laws fresh picked lobster it was still very good. Only complaint is the sauce needed to be cooked longer or at a higher temp because the cheese to make it was not melted all the way. Came here for dinner with a party of 4 (includes a 3 yr old and 6 yr old). The tank of lobsters were great entertainment for the little ones. The kids wanted to have lobster so we get the lobster fettuccine for them to share. My husband and I both picked out 2lb lobsters from the tank along with steamed clams. They were super accommodating with the kids. We asked for penne instead of the linguini to go with their plate and they did it. The food was fresh and delicious. The people preparing your lobster are so skilled with their most excellent methods and extraordinarily sharp knives... my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the Adirondack chairs under some of the loveliest mature pines, while waiting for our names to be called for seating. The wait staff works together as a meticulous team; not fancy or showy, just down home good food! This year we stayed in Ogunquit for the first time and found ourselves going back nightly for either an appetizer or one of the Best pies on the planet. We had blueberry one night and raspberry the next (shared, as there was more than enough for one...) I know we'll be back again and again. I am very disappointed in the Ogunquit Lobster Pound. Last night at 6:00 we were told , NO TAKE OUT ORDERS TONIGHT! Seriously!! During the pandemic when no one could or would eat inside they were more than happy to take our money because they needed us!!! TAKE OUT is how they survived!! It was the twice weekly people who came in to pick up dinner that put dinner on their family's table!! Now...they are above providing take out for the very same people who kept them going!! I don't care how busy they are... you take care of those who took care of you!! Not a very smart move!!! I have been going here since I was a child with my parents. I brought my wife for our anniversary last year and it was excellent as usual. We decided to make this a yearly tradition. We drove from Connecticut for our weekend away and our lobster dinner. When my wife started eating her tail it was tough and chewy. She spoke to the waitress who sent the manager over. She explained that it was tough because the lobster must have just gotten a new shell which causes it to be tough and they have no way of knowing this. I looked it up on line and as I actually already knew tough lobster is from being over cooked. She did offer to get her a new tail. My wife said no thank you. The manager said she would only charge for a soft shell. This was a 7 dollar discount. When we went to pay and spoke to the manager again about the discount because a lobster tail is 11 dollars she did get an attitude but gave us another 4 dollar discount. When we were on our way out her babysitter came in with two small children to see their mommy. She did tell them she was very busy and didn't have time. Very unprofessional. It may only be a two year tradition for us, but my family has been coming here for at least20 years, this is very disappointing. read more

For as long as I can remember, the OLP has been a part of my family's visits to Ogunquit, and during this year's return visit after an absence of a few years, this was where we headed for our first dinner of a four-night stay. I'm extremely happy to report that nothing has changed (it's been in the same family for close to 70 years, and apparently they know what they're doing). Our server, Kirk, was extremely good-humoured and tolerant of our little group of seven. The food is unassailable, as long as you don't do something silly and order meat loaf (as one of our party did during her last visit, something she came to regret). We started with two orders of steamers (clams) for five of us to share, and they were stupendous, completely sand-free and sweet. To follow, several of us opted for simple lobsters, which you can get in sizes ranging from 1-1/4 pounds to around 4 pounds, while others had lobster pie or other variations on a theme of lobster. I opted for a plain two-pounder, which was fantastic, so sweet that there was no need to adulterate it with things like melted butter or the like. Unfortunately, it was not the season for blueberries, so we opted not to have pie for dessert, heading instead to a nearby ice cream stand for our dessert. This is the quintessential coastal Maine lobster experience, one that you should definitely consider during your time in Ogunquit. read more

Stick with what they do best....the boiled lobster and steamers can't be beat. Once you order you go out to the tanks and pick your lobster. Other members of our group had The Lobster Stew and Lobster Pie with thumbs up reviews, but it's the boiled lobster (not the meatloaf) that will bring you back again and again. read more

This is the first place we've been to in Maine where you actually pick your own live lobster then they boil it and serve it up fresh and hot. We don't like the green goo inside a whole lobster and they were very accommodating to "clean it out" for us before it was served. So that experience was great, however my husband thought the tail meat was a little tough. I can't help myself from stopping here any time I'm in town. It is some what of a tradition, and they are always consistent. The prices here are a bit high but like anything else, you get what you pay for. I like it, because they always have several sizes of lobster. I'm not a fan of dinky little 1 1/4lb lobsters. I'm a big guy so if I'm craving a 4.5lb monster, they have it. I went there 2 nights ago with my girlfriend and got a half lb order ($11.95) of steamers and a 3lb lobster ($19.95/lb). It was delicious! They boil the lobsters and clams right in seawater and the lobsters are cut in the correct spots to make cracking simple and the meat easily obtainable.
