Mabel's has been around for quite a while and remains popular although our first visit last week left us disappointed. For starters, we made a reservation and our table wasn't;t ready. That happens; we understand. We were then seated in a narrow, uncomfortable booth inside (three of us). And then we had difficulty conversing with a lot of customer noise surrounding us. So maybe we weren't in the best mood. They didn't have the beer we ordered off the menu. Ok, that happens. When we asked for a substitute side we were told bluntly no substitutes are allowed. Nobody said "sorry." So our mood wasn't getting better. And the crab cake appetizer was bland. But -- the seafood dishes were good: the Newberg ($38) was rich and tasty and so were the Duke (scallops, shrimp, lobster, haddock - $40) and the Duchess (scallops, shrimp lobster - $38). We passed on dessert, filled but not exactly happy with our entire experience. Oh yeah, our server apparently forgot us when it came time to give us the bill. We waited and waited. This was the first restaurant I visited upon arriving in Kennebunkport. I loved the small town charm of Mabel's. I enjoyed a lobster roll outside for lunch. While there is a decent amount of outdoor seating, you will find more space inside to eat. My lobster roll tasted fresh. I picked the mayo lobster roll option. I enjoyed the sides presented with the roll. The Cole slaw, pickles, and fries made my lobster roll lunch absolutely delicious. Friendly staff and quick service. read more

This is my favorite place! First of all, I had the best espresso martini that I've ever had! We started off with the crabcakes, which were extremely crispy with a great dipping sauce. I of course, had to have the lobster roll, which was one of the best ones in the area! My friend got the mussels which were in this broth that was highly addictive. Mabel's is a charming little restaurant in Kennebunkport where you can get the Maine classics. Lobster rolls, fried scallops, clam chowder. It's also open year round for lunch during the day. We visited on a Monday afternoon for lunch. We were able to get a table for 4 adults and a baby. We ordered clam chowder, fried scallops, fried shrimp, and a lobster roll. I was very disappointed with how the clam chowder was served. My cup was 3/4 full (everyone at the table was served a different amount of chowder). It was barely luke warm ( probably the coldest soup I've ever been served) with a few pieces of chopped clam and one or two small chunks of potato. It was too bad, because the flavor itself was delicious. The fried shrimp, scallops, and lobster roll were good. The fries were especially tasty, I'll probably be back, and next time I hope to get a nice hot bowl of chowder. read more

I decided to take a spontaneous drive up to Kennebunkport, Maine--because why not? It's one of those places you always hear about on TV and in the news, and I've always been curious about what's really up there in our little state tucked in the upper right-hand corner. The town itself is a charming, picturesque coastal village with strong old-English vibes. It actually reminded me of some of the small towns I explored in the UK. Quaint shops, historic homes, and beautiful gardens line the streets--plus, it's surrounded by multimillion-dollar homes that add a touch of elegance to the whole experience. When it came time to eat, I turned to Google and saw that President George H. W. Bush used to dine at Mabel's Lobster Claw. I figured, if it was good enough for a president, it's good enough for this average American! Mabel's is known for its fresh crab and lobster. Everyone I spoke to raved about the crab--apparently, it's to die for. But here's my confession: I don't like crab. I know, don't yell at me--I just can't get into the taste. Still, I was this close to ordering one, just to see if fresh Maine crab would finally win me over. I almost wished I had someone with me who'd order it so I could sneak a bite. Instead, I started with calamari and a bowl of New England clam chowder, followed by the Cajun fish fry. Everything tasted fresh, no doubt about that. The calamari was impressively tender--not chewy at all--and the chowder, while more broth-based than creamy, had great flavor without being overloaded with potatoes. Maybe that's the Maine style, and honestly, I liked it. Now, the fish fry was where things missed the mark for me. The fish itself was thick and clearly fresh, but the breading just didn't hit right. It was supposed to be Cajun-style, but the seasoning was off--it tasted mostly like bland flour with a faint suggestion of spice. I ended up skipping the fish, but no hard feelings--the calamari and chowder made up for it. For dessert, I had the blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. The ice cream was cold and creamy, exactly what you'd hope for. The pie, however, was a bit of a letdown. The blueberry filling was dry, the crust was tough instead of flaky, and it just lacked that sweet, buttery flavor I was hoping for. Before leaving, I caught a glimpse of a massive lobster being delivered to another table. It looked incredible--definitely photo-worthy. I couldn't help but think, "Why don't my taste buds like lobster?" It looked so good it almost made me want to change my mind. If you find yourself in Kennebunkport, definitely stop by Mabel's. But do me a favor--order the lobster and tell me all about it. I'm living vicariously through your taste buds! read more

The decor was on point, air conditioning inside amazing, the wait wasn't too long for a late lunch and the staff were accommodating and friendly. We ordered lobster rolls and while good- we were underwhelmed with the amount of meat/quality. Mabels Lobster Claw is a real piece of Americana, Maine style! It's old, the tables are close and the pictures on the walls are of George Bush Sr. who absolutely loved this place apparently. He wasn't wrong! The servings here are HUGE! Whatever you order, you will NOT go away hungry! For starters, we had stuffed mushrooms (stuffed with what? Oh yeh - LOBSTER), charred brussel sprouts and a salad with blue cheese dressing. All were HUGE and DELICIOUS! Actually, we should have cut back on the appetizers to still be hungry for the main courses. The main courses were baked stuffed shrimp (stuffed with what? Oh yeh - lobster, you damn fool) and 2 orders of seafood newburg (shrimps, scallops, mushroom in a lobster sherry cream sauce and, what else, oh yeh, lobster, you damn fool). OMG so much seafood, so much food, so much lobster and we ate every piece. We almost had to hire a tow truck to haul our fat asses home! But I will do it all over again if I get back here because I certainly will. The service was outstanding! Everyone from the waiter to the busboy was friendly and happy. Mabels Lobster Claw really is a sight to see and eat at. Please do not miss this place!!! Tried Mabel's again this year and had a great meal. The lobster mac and cheese is a must have (even if it is a little liquidier than I'd like) - tastes divine. The blueberry pie is similarly delicious. Highly recommended for a casual dinner. I just wish that it was easier to park around the restaurant. read more

The clam chowder was excellent. I've been going to Mabel's Lobster Claw since I was a child in the 60s. What letdown. What I didn't like were the prices. Too high. Mabel's used to be wonderful, the food excellent. I had the baked Haddock, they couldn't accommodate broiling the fish. It was crusted, it was dry, no juice, no sauce, butter or lemon, dry, but kind'a tastey. My friend ordered the $34 lobster roll. They were careful not to place so much meat that any of it extended past the edges of the roll. I couldn't believe they were so cheap with the quantity. If you want lobster, go to Hannaford, they'll cook it for you and take it back to your hotel room, the beach, the rocks on Ocean Ave and enjoy. For a restaurant that charges high prices, as all of Kennebunkport restaurants do now, I would expect a service staff to deliver friendly, awesome service. Zack's Drive-In, in Hudson Falls, NY, offers service ten times better. I didn't appreciate paying $100 for a mediocre dinner experience. Kennebunkport has become a rip off. Everyone wants to be "high-end" now, LOL, please people, it's a little town on a river, it's a village. The gift stores sold merchandise made in china, some of it was nice. There comes a point inwhich prices become too high, food isn't worth it after certain point. The White Barn Inn can get away with it, although, even they have become rediculous. If I get my money's worth, fine, but I don't enjoy being ripped off. read more

Seriously disappointed in this latest visit. We've come back often over the years because Mabel's had always satisfied. This time the Crab Cake was soggy and tasteless. Worse, the signature Lobster Mac n Cheese, which brought us back after marvelous last order. Tonight, dreadful. Very little lobster; limp elbows swimming in a tasteless cheese sauce. On a stop over from Maine to Massachusetts we stayed at the Colony. At check-in we asked for suggestions of where to eat and the directed us to Mabel's which was walking distance. I know that this restaurant has a good reputation however, we had a terrible experience there. Our server was unfriendly and not very helpful. The lobster that I had was tough and tasteless. Even the rice and vegetables were bland. I ate my food because the meal was expensive and I didn't want to leave hungry. It was a very disappointing experience to say the least. read more

We were greeted by a young blonde woman who was not very pleasant. Immediately, she asked us if we had reservations and told us there would be a long wait or we could sit at the bar. We get to the bar and it's so not meant for people to sit at to eat at all! So we go back to her and ask if she could put us on the list. This place was incredible! Really cute & charming inside! The service was fast & friendly - we were in and out in an hour on Friday night. I know some people like to sit and linger but my husband & I prefer to get in & out so we loved that. For the food, we each got the 1 1/4 lb lobsters which you get two sides with. I chose slaw & fries (both great), my husband chose the vegetable of the day & fries (both great). We LOVED the lobster. It was so fresh! We also both got the clam chowder to start & I loved the chowder. It was perfect with chunks of potatoes & clams but still had a soupy consistency & great flavor. We had the pie for dessert which was also very good but the ice cream with it was so creamy & delicious. I definitely recommend Mabel's for your lobster fix - just be sure to get a reservation. Back for a second time in Kennebunkport ME and had to visit Mabels again. The food is so delicious. Our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable about food choices. He also helped us with sizing for our tee shirts. I Recommend scooping up one if you're here ,they are nice and soft. We started with some Apps. New England Clam chowder, mussels , Caesar salad and Brussel sprouts. My favorite was the mussels in White wine with a delicious buttery sauce to dunk bread. Lobster rolls and lobster risotto were excellent and my Shrimp scampi linguine was . It's heavy though so you may want to take a goody bag home. Love the old fashioned Pub vibe in this spot and the Bush family photos on the walls gives you a family feel of the place. So happy we were able to visit again. read more

I was told Mabel's would be the best food we ate on our trip but alas we were kinda disappointed. The lobster was tough and a bit overcooked. The blueberry pie was just not anything to write home about despite being homemade and well known. The drinks were fire and the wine pour was large. My husband did love his chicken tenders and said they were his second favorite of the trip. If we end up back here I would like to try the lobster roll since so many people say it's great. We didn't think a Sunday night not in high season would be an issue. The hostess wasn't the warmest when we didn't have reservations. That said, we were seated. The clam chowder was some of the best I ever had. Good clam/potato ratio. Creamy broth could stand up without anything added to it. Lobster roll was good, but I have had better. The fried shrimp, lightly battered and very tasty. Nice portion of shrimp. Our server, Jennifer, was top-notch. Friendly, informative and attentive. a powerful combination for wait staff. I have visited here since I was a child, and happy to report I think the food and ambiance have only gotten much better, but the restaurant has retained its character and a bit of how I remember it, 25 years later.
