Definitely Recommend. Great meal at Oberlin at a very reasonable price point (as compared to my hometown, NYC) Service was very attentive and thorough and went out of their way to make the evening special for us. Flavors were interesting, seasoning and acidity was very well balanced and technical execution was high. read more

Bon Appetit rated it the 7th best new restaurant IN THE COUNTRY! Here is my take: On a whim my husband and I wandered in last night to see what all the hype was about. We got there at 7:50. No one was at the hostess counter. Waiters and bartenders walked by. No one stopped to greet us. We stood there. Two more pairs of patrons came in right behind us. Now there were 6 people waiting to be welcomed. Nothing. Finally the phone rang and the hostess ran over to answer the phone. She mouthed a "sorry" to me. When she finished she turned to me but the phone rang again and she answered it! We timed 10 minutes from entering the restaurant to being welcomed. Not off to a good start. There was a 30 minute wait for a table in the small dining room, so we chose to be seated immediately at a narrow front window table in the bar. Not the most comfortable stools, but hey, it's the bar! The waiter was very personable. He explained that they served small plates and suggested we order 2 or 3 per person. We ordered 4 to share. They were VERY small. We ordered the Raw Bigeye Tuna with olive oil and lemon, the Potato Gnocchi with shellfish and chive, the Grilled Squid with cucumber and yogurt, and the Fish & Shrimp stuffed squash blossoms. The tuna was 4 very thin slices of tuna on a plate of olive oil. It was excellent, very flavorful olive oil. It totally overpowered the tuna. The quality of the tuna was excellent, but the taste of the fish was lost. The gnocchi dish was very odd. They came in a bowl floating in liquid. The gnocchi seemed to be breaded on the top and fried, so they had a nice crunch if you at them fast, but they lost their texture quickly since they were sunk in the liquid (that I don't know what it was. My guess is some of the fish water.) There were some mussels floating in the water as well. For $14, the size of this portion was shameful. Up on Federal Hill you can get a trunk size portion of Gnocchi for $14. I realize that this is a refined and carefully constructed dish to bring out a variety of flavors, but for $14 I do expect more than a mouthful. The grilled squid was more cucumber than squid, and the squid was tough, but the vinaigrette was superb. The best thing about the dish. Maybe the best flavor of the evening. The stuffed squash blossoms were tiny. Like the size of a large caterpillar. They came 5 to a plate looking like wrapped up cocoons. They tasted faintly of scrambled eggs. My least favorite dish. We did have dessert and it was the most successful dish of the night. It was billed as Berries, Olive Oil cake and Melon Sorbet. What you get is a bowl with some sweetened whipped cream cheese at the bottom, chopped strawberries, raspberries and blackberries on top covered with crumbles of toasted cake and a scoop of sorbet. This one dish was enough for 2 and the flavors and textures worked well together. We had a beer, a lovely milk stout that cost $10. For a small bottle. There was another stout on the menu that cost $24! I apologize for this very long review, but there is more. The pacing of the meal was odd. We were seated at 8pm and our first plate did not arrive until 8:30. And it was RAW tuna. Then 2 dishes came at 8:40, and the final dish at 8:55. Our dessert arrived at 9:15. After our tuna the waiter removed our forks from the plate and put them back down directly on the table. The second time he cleared he removed the fork and brought us new ones. I realize that the timing doesn't sound so bad, but when each dish is only one mouthful per person, it was a little strange and we were hungry! So to sum it all up, for an $85 bill, we did not leave with full bellies. We did get to try a variety of flavors and textures. The concept is a good one. Perhaps if our greeting when we walked in had been more welcoming I would not have felt so critical. I am reviewing the whole experience, not just the food. So, I would have given them a full 5 stars for the inventiveness of the food, but I removed one star for the hostess and one star for the price vs portion ratio. read more

Opening night for Oberlin! Thank you Ben and Heidi Sukkel for bringing more of your fine art to Providence, with even more seats and an extended menu to showcase more of Rhode Island's farmers and fishermen. Love the cozy neighborhood feel, the chic lighting fixtures, and the inspired menu. From olives and blood sausage to fish and lobster dumplings to the only-in-RI Johnny cake dessert, it's a beautiful shout-out to Rhode Island with the same love and WOW you've come to know and love at Birch - but more casual! Where it really counted, food and service, I had a great experience. Tried 2 small plates, the tempura mushrooms and brandade. Props to our server, a bartender, who knew the alcohol list in and out. Where it also really counts, everything else, I was rather perplexed with the lack of attention to detail and cohesiveness. For example, the typeface on the menu was difficult to read and there were no headers or reading guides to be found (small plate, large plate, vegetarian). Everything I read about it going in was another shout-out to local, so the random sake list seemed out of place. I opted to sit in a dark corner of the bar just to get a seat, but man - was it dark and cold! It would have been well worth the half hour wait to sit in the dining room for a little light and watching some of the food prep in the open kitchen. The beer menu was uninspired - the only RI beer was a Narragansett lager. I assume this will change, but I'm not spending 15 bucks for a small plate when the beer list is taken up by Narragansett and Yuengling. And the logo? I just don't get it. It looks like a wine spill. In short, go! Better for groups and more seating options than Birch. Similar awesome flavor combinations, albeit not as elegant in presentation. Full faith that more time will bring more beer options and hopefully better lighting in the bar. But oh the flavors! Go for the flavors. read more

In town for only a few days. Tried this place after Birch. Awesome.... Sat at the bar. Super friendly staff, made me feel very welcome. Asked them for their suggestions, and each plate was a winner, especially the squash pasta & parmesan broth. Really really good night guys, thank you very much. read more

After seeing Oberlin featured in the New York Times, I decided to check it out. As a party of four, we certainly got lucky to find one of a few places to sit, but that close atmosphere made the experience feel as if we were in a professional kitchen. The food was fantastic - we are not food experts, so we had to look up our orders online first, but once we figured out what we were ordering we loved it! Expect the dishes to be smaller than anticipated. I was glad to be leaving a restaurant not feeling like I needed to loosen my belt! The staff was extremely helpful despite being open for only 3 days. I'm looking forward to seeing how the menu develops as the restaurant matures. read more

The gnocchi was delicious but the dumplings weren't dumplings at all, they were kind of crunchy not sure what they were. They also forgot my order and delayed it by over an hour but at least they didn't charge me for it Nice addition to the downtown area read more

Great food, great service, awesome drinks. I think I have a new favorite. Oberlin is the more casual sister restaurant to Birch, a Providence classic. The menu is not so much a tasting menu as with Birch, so you're free to order whatever. There's raw stuff (fluke, scup, etc), bread, pasta, and more. They're structured as small plates , so be sure to get a few for a dinner for two Where Oberlin seems to shine is in their range of drinks that they have to offer. Wine, sake, beer, and a few cocktails are all available. The wine list at Oberlin might be one of my favorite wine lists available in Providence. You'll be sure to find a wine for anyone. P.S. Try the brandade! read more

I popped into Oberlin on Saturday night as I wanted to try one of Providence's newer eateries. I didn't get a full meal but I think I was able to get a good sense of the place. I ordered: 1. Oyster River cider from Maine -- this is a very dry cider, not sweet at all. Refreshing. 2. Raw scallops with radish -- delicious 3. Raw albacore tuna -- nice slices of fish, very mild flavor 4. Grilled shisito peppers with chives and tofu -- the peppers were perfectly grilled, and came with a dipping sauce, which I guess was the tofu. Not quite sure on that but it's a delightful little dish. Why only three stars? Two reasons: 1. It's expensive! The little fish plates are $10 each. They are teeny. On the flip side, the peppers at $4 are pretty good deal and the cider was a generous glass for $10. Perhaps if I had ordered one of the pasta dishes for $14 I would have felt better about the value prop but I had just come from Al Forno where I had devoured a grilled corn pizza so I decided to go easy on the carbs. 2. The pacing was off. The two fish plates came out almost immediately, but it was probably another 15 minutes for the peppers to arrive. Just too long. The service was good and the folks behind the bar are friendly. Verdict: Worth a return visit due to the quality of the food and the intriguing items on the menu. read more

Oberlin strikes me as a great place for a first date, especially if your dinner/drinks companion is a low-key (or high-key) hipster. The restaurant is small, with high-top tables, and subsequently has a cozy ambiance because everyone has to sit closely to one another, and there's hardly enough room for the servers to squeeze between the tables. The lack of space is part of the fun, right? Kind of like how people willingly move to Manhattan and live in closet-sized flats? The food (small plate style) was delicious as well. We had the fish/lobster dumplings, the bread with garlic, the hush puppies, the fried mushrooms, and the entire dessert menu (cereal with pana cotta over a flapjack, chocolate pudding, and an apple tart with ice cream). I ate every bite, and I'll definitely be back here! read more

Phenomenal! Visiting from California and happened upon this gem. Some of the best and most interesting food we have had in years. Drink selection was fun and varied. Service at the bar was warm, thoughtful and super attentive. Well worth the wait to be seated and would definitely go here again and again read more

There's a reason that this place wins awards all the time. The food is incredible, the ambience is delightful, and the staff is truly wonderful. The chittara cacio e pepe is such a simple dish, but its so much more than the sum of its parts. I think that this dish really exemplifies what Oberlin does well. They take simple dishes with relatively few ingredients and elevate those ingredients through impeccable technique and sourcing the best products. A dinner here is a wonderful experience. read more

Have been meaning to try Oberlin for some time and finally made it for my sweetheart's birthday dinner last night. Everything was exceptional...bread with roasted garlic, paper-thin sliced squash + cucumber, FABULOUS kohlrabi salad (who knew??), exquisite lasagna and divine broccoli dish. Other positive aspects: incredibly friendly and attentive service (charming, smart waitress), excellent lighting and sound, warm and cozy despite it being a chilly rainy night. Highly recommend dining here as it is innovative (without being weird), fresh, friendly and simply delightful. Bravo to all. read more

I visited Oberlin over the weekend, and it was a great experience! Ben and Heidi Sukle have created a wonderful neighborhood gem that everyone should experience. Arriving at around 5:15 on a Sunday, there were only two tables left for two in the dining room and the bar was pretty empty. Since we were a party of four, we opted for the table by the window in the bar area. We each had three courses PLUS dessert for a total of four courses, somewhat mimicking the experience at Birch. The highlights were the fish and shellfish dumplings, the lamb ragu with ricotta, and the raw scallops. I had the tempura mushrooms which came out cold and a little greasy, but every other dish was amazing. We decided to go for dessert because we kept seeing the great pictures on yelp of the apple dessert with woodruff ice cream, and it lived up to the expectations. The beer and wine list are also extensive with some interesting beers, including an Asian stout, that my dinner companions had not seen before. It was very busy by the time we left, and the bar was quite crowded with people waiting for tables. You might have to wait, but it will be worth it! Total bill for four courses for four people with drinks was about $200. read more

First, I'll say I've never been disappointed by the taste of anything here. The kohlrabi Caesar is my favorite, and the bartender who has served me both times I've been here is great. Here's the but -- both times I've been here my party has left feeling hungry. If you come hungry, you're going to need a few plates each. It's not as if I shy away from a more expensive meal. I think it's that I don't feel like the Oberlin is quite good enough to become my go-to for a splurge meal. So we end up ordering one or two things each and not wanting to spend any more even though everything is good. Last note: the last time my girlfriends and I were here, the bartender very nicely brought us a complementary dish of bread and roasted garlic oil before we ordered. Great. The only thing is this is listed on the menu for $5 I believe. The first time I was here I paid for that. Left me a little confused and feeling just a tad ripped off from the first time. Unless something has gone terribly wrong with the meal, I don't think they should give menu items away for free for consistency sake. Or they should offer every table bread and take it off the menu. read more

All the food we got here was excellent. The only miss was the Pimm's Cup, which... was not a Pimm's Cup in any sense, but no big deal. They had a nice selection of beers and wines. Service was great. Oberlin seems like a great date spot. Its a great ambiance with awesome music. They play a lot of classic old songs. The food is tapas style so do know that you will have to order an assortment of dishes if you want to fill up. However with the being said the flavors were very unique per dish. The only downside was that I couldn't eat shellfish so that eliminated what felt like a little more than half the menu. I dont think the restaurant is very vegeterian friendly because while there are some dishes, because you tend to order a couple there wont be too much of a choice. My thoughts about specific dishes: -Fusilli, Chicken Sausage, Kale, Argulo Pesto: This was probably actually my favorite dish among everything I ate. The pasta was perfectly cooked and it was just the right amount of fresh pesto. -Ricotta Cavatelli: I was not such a fan of this dish. There was a flavor that I couldn't identify that was a little strong and masked the other tastes. -Hush puppies: These were a table hit and there were actually quite a few of them. The pairings greatly complimented the falvors so I was very satisfied. So we actually ordered all three of the desserts but the Apple Tart was by FAR everyone's favorites. Simply phenomenal. I would go back just for this dessert. After that I would say the triple chocolate pudding then the toasted cereals. But theyw ere all good. read more

With all the hype my experience was pretty underwhelming. First we ordered appetizers. We got celery root mini tortellinis. They couldn't have given us less tortellinis. The bowl was filled with some kind of garlicky broth and I could've counted the number of tortellinis on my fingers. We also ordered a kale caesear salad with cured bluefish. It was drenched in white glop and incredibly wet. The bluefish was beyond pungent. Next we ordered the signature whole fish. Thankfully, this was terrific, although we were told it would suffice for our party of four, in reality it would be adequate for two. The prices have climbed dramatically since it first opened as well, and you are not getting bang for you're buck. read more

Having visited Oberlin's sister restaurant, Birch, I had high expectations for this restaurant. I was not disappointed. As the restaurant was extremely busy on a Friday night (they don't take reservations), I sat in the bar area, where I was quickly attended to by a very friendly and knowledgeable server. I ordered the combo raw seafood platter (Scallops, Winter Fluke, Black Bass, Scup, and Mackerel) and my server recommended an appropriate sake. The raw seafood was so good that at some point I think I closed my eyes to just savor the deliciousness of it. The sake was a great pairing (kudos, friendly server dude) and my water glass was kept full. If you go here on a busy night, expect a long wait. Or just find the first open chair at the bar and make a new friend :) Thanks, Oberlin, for a great meal! read more

Had a great pre-show meal at Oberlin again. Wine list was delicious and on point. Ordered the Crudo surprise combo... super pleased. Mussels were great per usual, but tonight the flounder was the standout. Beef tartare is always great. Best dish of the night was the parsnip caramelle, a delicious pasta dish that I could have kept eating all night. Staff was friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is warm and inviting, can't wait to go back! read more

I'll give Oberlin a second chance, although my girlfriend won't. None of the food impressed her, ( she did say the mussels were good ) and she couldn't get over having to listen to Madonna - which was definitely too loud - and the pompous ass sitting at the table next to us, but I digress. I thought the food was pretty good, and I'd be willing to give it another chance even though I wasn't blown away. No honest complaints about the service, any comments I have ill keep to myself. The bartender was fantastic. We went for a cocktail, and an order of chicken wings ( amazing buffoni farm chicken wings in a smoky spicy bacon sauce ) before we went to Oberlin. I won't say where because I feel like that would be rude, but they were better than anything we had at Oberlin. Chicken wings. That is not a reflection of an unrefined palate either, so don't give me that. I won't pick apart every flaw in the dishes because that would be obnoxious, but I will point out that my girlfriend got the mushroom ravioli, and kept saying that it had a fishy taste to it. I was enjoying the ragu, and when I finished I tried a bite of the ravioli. I completely understood what she meant. There was such a mushroom flavor, perhaps due to a mushroom powder, or extract in the sauce that it covered the whole dish in a musty, fishy taste. I've done the same thing at home experimenting with dried mushrooms. I don't know exactly what the cause of the odd "undertaste" was but I could see how someone might enjoy it. Neither of us thought it was good. Interesting, yes. Good, no. Perhaps there's a fine line there. This place is fairly new, so I'll wait until they iron out some kinks before I come back, because birch is so great, I really want to see Oberlin succeed. If I have a better experience next time I'll bump this review up from 3 stars, but 3 is honest for now. read more

The food is spectacular and the service is great! All fresh and well thought out. The only downside is the waiting time for all the dish.

Love every pasta dish. Kohlrabi Caesar salad is bomb. Front of house is cool and knowledgable.

The service could have been more attentive, larger portions of food and the whole roasted scup could have been more tasty with less bones in it. The raw bigeye tuna and the gnocchi were very good however. The atmosphere was casual and intimate and I would go back. read more

Very pleased with the beer and wine menu- and oh sake varieties galor! Oberlin has a wonderful ambience. I come to providence for work once a month, and I always try to squeeze in a stop to Birch or The Eddy. I read that the Birch duet had just opened a new concept named Oberlin so I had to give it a try. First, I'm really impressed how great the service was, considering they just opened few days ago. Then the food...I ordered the roasted beets plate, the dumplings, and the gnocchi. Each plate was amazing! I'd definitely add this to my must places to visit when in providence. read more

Not bad. Olives and blood sausage were good but olives tasted store bought and not farm raised/ farmers market purchased. A little unclear with what some of the dishes were. sort of seemed like they were trying too hard with the menu... def has a young aspiring chef feel to it with young staff. They seem to be going with the sort of indie/ hipster/ all natural trendy feel common in providence but it comes off a bit pompous. Over-all good but not where i think it could be. a little humility and some good, simple ingredients could bring it to a 5 in my mind. Prices were steep considering it didnt blow my mind. Food was good overall but not fantastic. read more

Here is the situation. I was looking to have dinner before a show on a Monday night. Tripped over Oberlin. This is a nice place to take your significant other for a meal. The food was very good. Grilled scallions, fish with olive oil and lemon, caci di pepe, gnocchi. Delicious. But just don't go there to swill beer before a show. This is not the place. The food was FANTASTIC but the portions just didn't fit the price. I totally understand that the food is freshly prepared with local ingredients right in front of you but it was a $45 bill for 3 bread slices, 6 gnocchi and 8 angiotti. I'm not saying the food wasn't great, because it was. I would say that it's about worth 80% of the high prices, but do not expect a solid meal. I stumbled on this place (with the assistance of Yelp) because it was near the venue I was attending for a concert. First time in Providence! The gig was mediocre, but this restaurant... I'd like to say words fail me. But, they rarely do. I went with some of my inclinations but mostly let myself be led by the cute barman, Evan. Yes, the eye candy at Oberlin doesn't hurt!! I started with the surprise raw fish plate and I have no idea what I ate besides mussels I wanted to rub all over my body, and then still eat. The fish was as gorgeous and flavorful as I would have dreamed. Far in excess of beauty than any plain old sashimi I've ever touched. Delicate, fresh, rich AND light! I followed those three delicacies with some gorgeous, sweet and savory, well-seasoned sun chokes which were made to match the spicy tofu dipping sauce. It's pairings like this that make you realize why chefs are chefs and you/I are/am not. My perfect single-sized loaf of sourdough paired deliciously with the sugary roasted garlic, resting in olive oil I could have drunk! Just when I thought I was done, my leeks arrived... Evan was particularly enthusiastic about those... one bite and I know I made 'O' face, though no one else was looking. Honestly, I had so much food, and Evan insisted I wanted the apple tart for dessert, so I --horrifyingly--had to dismiss the last few bites of bread and leeks. The apple tart is not for the lactose intolerant. Were it not for the gorgeous, flaky consistency, I'd have bet money the crust was pure butter! And the perfect ball of obviously homemade, creamy, caramel (?) ice cream on top made it worth the fact that I had to roll myself out of there. Superb food, superb service, welcoming, warm and understated atmosphere. I spent more last night than I usually spend on solo dinner and I would happily spend it again and again. I would come back to have dinner with Evan, Ben and Ian? The food and drink ridiculous goodness was frosting on the cake! read more

Ok. I'm going to buck the trend. Oberlin is ok. Just, okay. I went the first week it was open, and have been a few times. Some of the tapas were just too small to share. A few were really tasty though and I didn't want to share. Defeating the idea of tapas. It's the first restaurant I've been to outside of St. Petersburg where I've had to ask so often what something was. A little precious I think. I LOVED the blood sausages and olives! Uber yummy. The apple tart was good, sans the ice cream, just not my taste. All in all it was kind of average, nothing to scream about, in a town full of fab restaurants. I can't remember what else we had, it's been a week since last I went. Hmmm, maybe that sez something. Perhaps it just says I eat out every other night so whatev. I'll definitely go again, because it's open on Mondays‼ read more

Fresh ingredients and delicate balances. Signature 'raw' dishes were delightful - fluke with spicy soy. Bonito was light and gentle - best I've had, big eye tuna was not as memorable. If you're looking for a place that serves fish whole, this is your place! They have a variety of fish options starting with a few choices of raw sashimi style dishes to whole grilled fishes. Get the whole grilled fish, it's almost always prepared perfectly. It might be intimidating for some people having to filet your own fish at the table but it's so good that you won't mind getting your hands a bit dirty. It's worth it!!! It's such an experience too having fish serve whole, makes the whole communal eating with friends even more special! Place is small but very intimate and relaxed atmosphere and staff is always nice and accommodating. Small plates but every single dish is always delicious. The brandade bread with the dipping sauce was great. We also had a few of the raw fish dishes and all were great especially with the touch of sea salt and lemon olive oil. The grilled whole fish is always delicious, it's definitely the highlight of the meal. The gnocchi was a personal favorite, just tons of flavorful. Great place to have great food. read more

this place was amazing. we stopped this place by after being ignored by many places and cut in line by many people who felt privileged enough to ignore us waiting for a table and sit themselves. as minorities getting treated with kindness is important to us. Food's taste was good, just that. Service never explained menu or the restaurant concept when taking the order. The menu is based in a list of raw food, fish and a couple of pastas and saldas. Minute portions, this fact really has to be explained when you're charged $18 for gnocchis and you get a tasting size plate. Left the place to have dinner somewhere else as we were hungry after a $60 check for two glasses of wine, the carbonara pasta and the gnocchis appetizers read more

I appreciated the way that vegetables played a leading role in many dishes (those slow roasted carrots!). I was alone so I didn't get to sample as many small plates as I would have liked, but I greatly enjoyed my strozzapreti, carrots, and blueberry tart. The creative wine list was another nice touch - I went with a Grüner Veltliner, but if you want a wide variety of sake or an obscure Slovenian rosé, they gotchu. Agree with the comments about the pace of service being more relaxed, but I got through three courses and multiple drinks in less than an hour while watching the hard-working staff assemble everyone''s meals in the open kitchen. All in all, a very positive experience that made me want to sample more of the menu. I'll be back the next time I'm in PVD! read more
