Overall I've been super impressed with Otra! It's a great date night out spot. And bonus they have their own parking lot in the back, that you can park in for I think it's two hours free with validation at Otra. It is a little awkward if you can only get a counter seat since it's just tight to also try and chat with your waiter. I love their little bread basket that they bring around. The huevos cabreados are always a favorite and we also really like the mojo clams. The fries is a huge portion and the small is plenty to share. We usually go with a variety of pintxos to share vs going with a dinner entree. We recently went before a PPAC show and they had us in and out in plenty of time for the show! read more

Went here for a belated birthday dinner w a girlfriend & got two seemingly simple entrees that were truly out of this world. We enjoyed some big sexy steak w an egg on top (prepared & seasoned to perfection) & the Mariners Cataplana = seafood stew (shrimp, scallops, calms, mussels) that was SO TASTY!!! OTRA delivers a very upscale dining experience at a great value. The dining room is very comfortable, and the staff were attentive without being overbearing. The food itself was also great. They start you off with a choice of bread, as well as olives, nuts, and a spread. All of that was great. We then split calamari, which was fresher and more flavorful than most. I had the paella, which was large enough for most people to share. It was very delicious with clams and nicely crispy chicken. I ended up eating leftovers over two more meals, and I was very happy with it. read more

It really pains me to downgrade my rating for Otra because this had previously been one of my favorite dining establishments in Providence. I enjoyed a number of great meals here over the years with one of my friends as well as my partner. My friend and I were always well attended to (shout out to Adam) and served great food. However, my fiancé and I dined here on Valentine's Day and we were really disappointed with our recent experience. The service was truly subpar- I had to refill my own wine glass and ask for a refill of water. While we enjoyed the bottle of wine we ordered, we were beyond disappointed with the poorly presented and tasteless tin of octopus. It was literally a tin, opened and put on a plate with no crackers, sauce or other accompaniments, for $15. The croquetas de jamón ($8) were excellent, but the seafood paella ($40) which we were really looking forward to, was nothing special at all and really did not even taste like a traditional paella. Instead it was more of a tomato, rice and seafood dish, served in a paella pan. There was no saffron flavor at all and I we really questioned if there was saffron in it at all. I understand that this variation includes tomato sauce, but the tomato really overwhelmed the other flavors. While the atmosphere here is still nice and was appropriate for a nice evening out, we were so disappointed with the food and the service on this visit. I'll still come back for appetizers and drinks but not sure I'd return again for a full meal given this recent experience. read more

Our first time to OTRA & we tried all the tapas! I've walked by the restaurant a million times & then saw a sign that says tapas 50% off at the bar from 5-6pm Tuesday thru Friday. Yes, please! The wine & beer list has some interesting options, cocktails look gorgeous. You start with the Bread Service: alioli lactonese, assorted olives & marcona almonds served with choice of hard crusted baguette or soft portuguese roll. Ummm, let's just be honest here... I could make a meal of this alone with a gorgeous glass of rosé. The bread was crusty, the alioli lactonese was something new for us & completely decadent, the brine of the assorted olives cut through the lusciousness of the alioli & the marcona almonds gave a nice crunch. We tried the following tapas: - Croquetas de Jamon: Iberian ham croquets - a perennial favorite! - Patatas Bravas: fried potatoes with spicy sauce & alioli - wished the potatoes were a bit softer - Summer Spare Ribs: mojo rojo & arugula salad - hubby's favorite - Torta Jamon: Spanish omelette with carmelized onion & potatoes topped with Jamon Serrano - our least favorite, maybe the omelette was a little over? - Bombas: Potato & meal ball with spicy sauce - note to self: get two orders of these next time - Spanish Roulette: shishito peppers with maldon salt - so fun! I first learned about this restaurant several years ago when I bought my sister and her husband a gift card for Christmas. They loved it. Well, I finally had a chance to go. Really nice restaurant with many choices. Very nice wine list, mostly Mediterranean wines. And some nice cocktail options. For starters, they had some very good crusty bread. Their spread was a whipped milk, olive oil and garlic. Very flavorful. There were also Marcona almonds and Spanish green olives. I started with a tapas of lightly fried squash flowers in a tang/fresh tomato sauce. And my dining partner had the shaved garden salad. Both really good starters. Staff very professional and service excellent, and the food was incredible. I admired how the waitress wiped the table in between course and silverware replaced. Very attentive without being over-bearing. For the main course I had the seafood stew, CATAPLANA "Marisco" The Mariner's Cataplana. Shrimp, scallops, squid, mussels & littlenecks cooked in a spicy tomato broth of Vidalia onions, garlic & white wine, served with garlic-rubbed toasted bread. It was awesome. So much seafood and so much flavor. Probably the best seafood stew I've ever had. My dining partner had the OTRA CRISPY CHICKEN, Chicken breast, breaded & lightly fried, served with melted leeks, mushrooms & a touch of cream with fresh tarragon accompanied by a crudo of asparagus and spring carrots. We had an amazing dinner here. We sat at the bar which was less noisy than our initial table. We ordered a series of tapas.- patatas bravas, gambas, snow pea special (to doe for), manchego and jamon serrano. We loved every dish. There wasn't one dish we didn't enjoy. Then we topped it off with a scoop of caramel ice cream (homemade on the premises), and a chocolate pudding/mousse. They did forget to bring our glass of port - but also didn't charge us for it. And otherwise the waiter was friendly, knowledgeable, and very good service. We have added this place to our 'repeat' list and plan to go back. read more

Wow! How am I just finding this spot! Dined here last weekend and truly one of the best meals/experiences I've had in a while and that says a lot for as much as I travel to new restaurants. First off the service is best in class and staff is very knowledgeable. We also the pleasure of meeting the executive chef Gloria. Her passion in her food shows and happy we were able to meet her. We took all recommendations from the octopus, scallops, Iberico ham to the croquettes. The thing that stood out the most was their house made lactonnaise. Extremely addictive and watch out! Ortra is magnificent. This is an authentic Spanish restaurant with amazing food and wonderful people. Our dinner was outstanding.

I'd love to give Otra more than three stars but the service was just Ok - a bit slow. Ambience was wonderful & restaurant is beautiful but our server seem to forget that we were there. I was constantly looking for her. I ordered the Carne a La Plancha and it was a generous portion and can be split between two people. It comes with an open faced bone marrow that was very buttery. However, my steak lacked flavor and definitely needed more salt or seasoning. I'll give it another try next time and maybe ask for extra salt. Three people from our table sampled the steak and agreed that it was lacking salt or seasoning. On the positive side, we all enjoyed their tapas for sure. That deserves five stars and those came out in a timely manner. Definitely a great spot for friends, booze, and tapas. I'm just sad that my steak lacked seasoning. Better luck next time! read more

This restaurant is located in the old Pakarang Thai space on S Main. It focuses on Iberian cuisine, exploring the foods of Spain & Portugal with some Southern French influences. Items like Tapas which are small bites or bar snacks including Pintxos (food served on a stick), Montaditos (food served on bread), Bocadillos (small sandwiches) as well larger plates or Platos which are full entrees can be enjoyed in the dining room or the bar area. There are a few tables outside as well. I found the restaurant very LOUD. Maybe the walls and the ceiling material are not conducive to sound buffering or absorption, but the place was so loud, I could not hear people in my own table speak. We did tell the hostess on the way out about the noise issue and we said, maybe some fabric, curtains or something that will absorb sound could be added to the decor. Regarding the food, it was a bit on the pricey side....I tried 3 out of the 4 dishes on my table and I found all of them very salty....even though I had asked for my dish (steak a la plancha) to be made low sodium...it was still salty.... Iberian food tends to be on the salty side, so you can ask for a low sodium preparation if you wish. Also, the free bread that is given before the meal was room temperature, a bit on the chewy side....a nice warm bread piece would had been a much better experience. Overall the food was good, but not outstanding....good that we tried it. read more

We had dinner here on Saturday and it was fantastic. Great selection of Tapas and main dishes. I happen to be a potato junkie. Kinda like the guy in Forrest Gump I like them fried, mashed julienne you get the drift. They had potato chips drizzled with honey. OMG fantastic. We had our Valentine's dinner at this restaurant, after making a reservation several weeks before. We were seated rapidly. Seating consisting of many tables of varying sizes in one large room adjacent to the kitchen and it felt overcrowded. As you can expect for this occasion, the restaurant quickly filled to capacity, and the staff appeared over. After ordering a bottle of wine, we ordered croquetas de jamón and a tin of Galician pulpo(octopus) as tapas and a paella marinera to share. Before these items were served we were served bread buns with a buttery spread, and small trays of assorted pitted olives and Marcano almonds in oil, all of which was quite tasty. The first order to arrive were the croquetas, which were very flavorful and crunchy in the outside and creamy in the inside, as they should be. These were served with a couple of sauces to dip them into, but I loved how the croquetas tasted by themselves. But then our server disappeared for a while, which made us wonder what happened to the tinned pulpo. Also, water refills were slow to come by. Finally, the tin of Galician octopus arrived, literally in the tin in which the pieces were packed, with no sauce or crackers to eat them with, and the octopus was extremely bland in taste. When I was able to flag our waiter, I asked if I could get a sauce to spice up this tapa, and all she could offer was more of the same red sauce that was served with the croquetas. This was a very dissatisfying dish, to say the least. Then their fabled version of a paella marinera arrived. This is a large dish, enough to share between 2-3 people, full of mussels, clams, squid, and shrimp. But alas, the flavor of the rice was very disappointing. Nothing like a traditional paella, the absence of any saffron or smoked paprika flavoring was particularly noticeable, and it appeared to be primarily a rice seasoned with a sweetened tomato sofrito with a bit of seafood broth. In sum, the croquetas were excellent, but the rest of the meal was underwhelming, particularly given the price point and their previous reviews. read more

The food was excellent. The bar staff attentive without being distracting and very friendly. Wonderful tapas. The decor was spot on. My only complaint was that the place is extremely loud. I had to yell at the bartender from 12 inches away for him to hear me. Looking around I noticed no discernible efforts at sound mitigation. I wish more restaurants would put effort into this. I was alone, so I ended up putting in my AirPods with active noise cancellation because I was getting a headache. I would definitely recommend this place if you have a large party, and you are the ones going to be making all the noise. Otherwise, bring earplugs and enjoy the excellent food. New joint for tapas and Iberian food in Providence that's been opened up by the owners of Bacaro. They have a range of different types of food from tapas to paella to entrees. We only got tapas during our visit. Got a gin based drink which was refreshing, though a bit too sweet. Got the Bombas, apple and Manchego salad, cured meats and cheeses, Croquetas and the Huevos Cabreados. Everything tasted good. We couldn't really differentiate between the apple and manchego pieces as they were diced similarly. The Croquetas and Bombas were unremarkable, and tasted somewhat similar. Got two orders of croquetas even though we only ordered one. Got the Salchichon and the Manchego cheese which were good though i did not like the Torta del cesar. Finally, the huevos cabreados is basically egg over crispy fried noodles that they toss around before serving it to you. It doesn't really have much flavor but does have a crunchy texture. Overall good experience, especially if you're into tapas. Bit pricey compared to portion sizes though most tapas restaurants are like that. read more

Bright and welcoming - what a great new spot! Came here last night for dinner with some girlfriends - made reservations via email through their website. They are closed Sun/Mon. Got there for 6pm and was thinking it didn't look like I needed to make reservations, boy was I wrong - as the night went on, the place was bustling, tables and the bar filled up! Plenty of street parking, no need to feed the meters after 6pm. This is the sister restaurant of Bacaro (a place I love!) so concept is similar but with smaller offering of tapas along with entree options. The place is on the opposite side of Bacaro, I believe in the spot where Pakarang used to be. We ordered 3 meats, 3 cheeses, some tapas and my gf ordered the bife a casa. Favorite meat and cheese was chorizo and manchego. Favorite tapas - pork belly (sooo yummy) and the croquetas de jamon (ham croquets). My gf's steak was cooked perfectly and she enjoyed it. Drinks came out quickly and were thoroughly enjoyed. It's crazy to say this, but the spread that came with the bread was so good - so make sure you give it a try before dinner starts! Back again- four of us. We shared a number of dishes: the patatas bravas, croquettes jamon, a Spanish roulette, crispy calamari,croquettes halibut, pan con tomato, pork belly and the scallops. All too much! The dishes were good except for the halibut and the pork belly which were disappointing. We shared a bottle of Garnache Fuego and one of us had a glass of Tres Picos. Enjoyable. The bill came to $165 not including the tip. Our server was good but perhaps a bit overwrought and rushed. We like the layout of the tables and the design of the room. The lively ambiance is at times unfortunately too noisy making conversation difficult. But, we will return read more

Last night my "book club" and I dined at Otra and all agreed this place ticks all the boxes! In fact food and service did more than just tick the box. David was phenomenal. Kind, informative, and attentive while still giving us plenty of space and time to carry on our conversations. The food, most of which was off the tapas menu for us, was all delicious. An amazing array of options sure to please any palette. The entire menu was mouthwatering, and to be honest I can't wait to get back to try more of it! We were lucky enough to try a new dessert making its way to the menu soon, and I highly recommend you try the carrot cake to finish off your meal. The space is large enough to accommodate parties of any size, and they have plenty of bar seating. A tall ceiling is made more intimate having been painted black. A clean palette of black and white accented with reds and oranges makes for a lovely space overall. Speaking of decor, our server was even kind enough to rearrange vases above the bar after I pointed out they would look better mirrored. Talk about service! I brought a friend to celebrate a big birthday and we were blown away by the immersive experience. It was during the holiday season and we were so bored of American cuisines and Italian-esque. The food here is amazing, I still drool when I see the photos. I've included some below. Our server Adam was stellar. He noticed our questions and noted all of our dietary restrictions so he could suggest menu items to our taste. He made adjustments on menu items without us asking. He spoiled us. He brought candle lit treats for my friend. He made us want to stay for hours. Such a sweet person. The ambiance is cozy and fine dining but not stuffy if that makes sense. Went here for the first time last Tuesday. Drinks were good but slow with only 1 bartender on. Refills on water weren't offered and took awhile once requested. Our waiter was not attentive, which wasn't surprising as he was the only server. We ordered our food and he told us that 2 of the 4 entrees we orderered would take 45 minutes to cook as they were cooked the "authentic" way. No problem for us as we weren't in a rush. At least 45 minutes later the waiter came to our table and said he forgot to put our entrees in and could not remember which entree I ordered. No apology given, he just said he's the only waiter on and then ran off. Over an hour later our food finally came. Unfortunately my entree was wrong. I didn't realize it until after. It was little necks and onions. Nothing else was in it. It was supposed to have chorizo and sausage. The waiter ran by once to ask if "we were enjoying our food"... and with all our mouths full we just nodded and he again ran off. I understand working short staffed but no apology given at all, more of him just making an excuse of being the only waiter. With the major mix up of forgetting to put our food in, he should have let a manager know what happened, or at the very least apologize. He never asked if we wanted dessert, which at that point we wouldn't have since we waited forever for our meals. read more

I did not enjoy my time dining here as a solo black woman. The female server was nice in the beginning but became inattentive as my meal progressed. I watched her give good service and attention to other tables - refilling drinks, checking in, removing plates, etc but I had to get up from my table and ask for my check at the end of my meal. I'm not sure why my service was visibly different from those around me, but I didn't feel good about spending my money here. I spoke with a manager about my experience and she was apologetic. She invited me back for the chance at a better experience but I will not return. Bad customer service is unforgettable, and it will make you forget every good part of the dining experience. read more

Came here for our anniversary dinner. Enjoyed the stylish, warm, open ambiance and great service. Off the tapas menu, we ordered the grilled octopus, Iberian ham sandwich, and Catalonian ratatouille. We ordered a seafood paella off the main menu. The grilled octopus was the best thing we ate. You get a small whole grilled octopus and it's packed with flavor, with just the right amount of caramelization without being overly charred. It came with a tasty pepper and onion relish. The second favorite thing was a far second and it was the ratatouille. It was light and simple, but "refreshing" in terms of dishes because of its clean flavors. We were hoping the ham sandwiches were like the ones we had in Barcelona. Rich, buttery ham in between some buttered baguette. Unfortunately, the truffled cheese overpowered every other flavor - you barely could taste the ham. And it was too reminiscent of basic grilled cheese. And then we ordered seafood paella, but got a different dish! We got the seafood stew special instead. I guess there was a miscommunication or we didn't order clearly. We didn't want to make a big fuss about it. This was chock full of super fresh, local seafood that was cooked well. We were just a little underwhelmed by the onion-tomato broth base. It needed salt. It needed more dimension/richness. It needed something. It was more a homecooked vibe with this one than fine dining. My family and I celebrated New Year's Eve at OTRA and had a wonderful time! Hostess Jean and her son David (our server) were delightful, and really added to the festivities. In fact, we were visited by several other staff members, all of whom were very professional and pleasant. We absolutely loved the food... we shared many appetizers, the highlights included the calamari and the pork belly. For dinner, I had a special duck dish with pears, that was out of this world! The drinks were creative and the desserts we tried were out of this world! Our table was ready when we arrived, we never felt rushed and again, the staff was just terrific! It was a very festive night at Otra, and we will certainly return!! Highly recommended!! When we asked for other seating arrangements, as they put us in a bad location in the restaurant, as they did with any couple of two, we were quickly told that the larger seating arrangements took priority; so unfortunately, if you eat here, bring more than two people. On the other hand, the food and service were both rather good. I had the combination of the Croquetas de Jamon, Paella Vegetariana and the Otra Flan. My husband had the Apple & Manchego Salad, Otra Crispy Chicken and the Double Chocolate Cake. All the dishes were delicious. read more

An excellent Spanish restaurant in Rhode Island? Not what i was expecting but this is certainly that. To calibrate I lived in spain in the 60's and have visited multiple times since then. I live in miami which has no lack of Spanish food. So what makes this so good? For starters they bring out a complimentary plate of olives, nuts bread and an amazing ailoli. The wine list is awesome with some very nice wines under $35. The tapas are all just superb. We had the salchichón which was fresh and soft not dried and straight from spain. the gambas a la plancha were perfectly cooked and instead of swimming in olive oil they were served on top of the excellent ailoli (I love aioli if you can't tell). The croquetas were out of this world. But probably the best thing was squash flower filed with cheese, just amazing. The boquerones were wrapped around an olive so were a notch above. The desert? Wow just an amazing flan that came with some caramelizad figs and some whipped cream. Just amazingly. Nice atmosphere very good service. We were sticking with tapas and salad so ordered the ham croquettes (crispy and flavorful), the ratatouille (great smoky flavor), the caramelized onion with blue cheese (silky and tasty), the arugula, apple and manchego salad (perfectly balanced) and the fish and chips (so light and crispy).
