Amazing dinner here on a weekday. It was bustling inside despite it being a Tuesday and the restaurant was absolutely packed during dinner time. We ordered so many dishes and almost everything was a hit. Matrimonio: came with a side of bread and I loved dipping the bread in the sauce. Thought the anchovies were a bit too salty but the tartness in the sauce balanced that out so definitely get the sauce with your anchovies. The olives were great as well. Patatas bravas: a fave at tapas restaurants and they were fried very crispy here without being oily and the aioli was not too fatty tasting Txistorra con Brandada: little small sausages- this one was good but I didn't think there was anything too special Gambas al Ajillo: heavenly. the garlic oil was so good that I was using the bread it came with to essentially drink it. The shrimp were cooked without being dry croquetas: I personally don't love anything too creamy so this one wasn't a hit with me but everyone else in my party liked Pinchos Morunos: i think this was my favorite during the dinner. the pork was so juicy while retaining the smokiness from the grill empanadas: were so small and only came with 2 in the order, so wasn't a big fan Lastly, the Arroz Negro paella: absolutely delicious and probably made my teeth black all dinner but was worth because every bite was delicious I think the price point is a bit high for some food items but aside from that, no complaints. We had just returned from a trip to Spain where we had the best vacation we ever had. We'd fallen in love with the country, the landscape, the architecture, the culture, the history and the remarkable cuisine. So, when we returned home, we sought to see if we could recapture some of what we had loved but, if you've been to Spain you know that's impossible. Same for us until we hit this place. The moment we walked in we were transported. It was as if we had wandered into one of the places we had wandered onto in Barcelona, Grenada, Nerja or Madrid. Not only were these tapas as good as those we had in Spain, they even had the beer I had so loved in Spain and seemed to be unknown in any restaurant I had been to in the local area. This place was fabulous. If you have been to Spain, I'm guessing you'll think the same. And, if you're trying to decide where you want to go on your next vacation, hit this place. Just go! I lived in Madrid for a bit, went to many Tabernas off the beaten path - outside the centro, in neighborhoods in that throbbing city. This place is similar to what you'd find, and more. The wine list is award winning with breadth and depth. Take a risk and order something recommended. The dishes are authentic and full of flavor. Prices are a bit high, but value for good product is what you're paying for, since you don't have to fly to Madrid and back. Debra, the first owner, is a spanish wine sommelier and has stocked up an amazing list of Spanish wines. She also constructed a great menu. Had an amazing date night here tonight. The vibe was very cozy and it felt like being in Spain! We started with the sherry flight which was tasty and very fun, and enjoyed the boquerones (crispy fried white anchovies which had almost a salt and vinegar flavor) snack that came with the flight. For tapas, we had the shrimp, the eggplant, the mushrooms with duck egg, and tortilla Española. We loved everything but the favorites were probably the shrimp and the eggplant. Our server was very welcoming and helpful - he gave excellent recommendations and was attentive throughout the meal. For tapas, we found the portion sizes to be generous. I can't review the full dinner menu and tapas, as I only came here for the bar, but I did want to leave a review because it was a great evening. From 5-7pm Monday through Saturday, the bar does $2 oysters, and my partner and I had a whopping 24! We went on a Thursday evening and the atmosphere was great - not too loud or crowded, but not dead either. The service was amazing as well - the oysters came almost immediately after we ordered them and when we ordered the Sherry flight, the staff gave us a great explanation of each of the 4 drinks before leaving us to our food and drink. Oysters ($2 each) - I'm not usually a huge fan of oysters, but these were different from a lot of the others I've had in the past. They were slightly briny, but they also had a really sweet aftertaste that made them really pleasant to eat. They were served with lemon and also a little cup of vinegar - both options were good but I preferred the lemon. We started with 12 oysters and ordered a second dozen when we realized how good they were! Sherry flight ($30) - I had never had sherry before, but this was quite pleasant. The flight came with 4 different sherries and 2 croquetas which were tasty and filled with ham and bechamel. The filling was a bit dense, but not necessarily a bad thing. The four sherries were as follows, and my reviews are coming from someone who does not know much about sherry but enjoyed each one: - Manzanilla La Cigarrera - This was a light one with a very light alcohol taste. It paired nicely with the oysters. - Fino el Granero - This one had a slightly stronger alcohol taste to it, but it also paired nicely with the oysters. - Amontillado Rare Escuadrilla - This one tasted like a red blend and was my favorite of the four. It was nice to sip on after eating the oysters. - Olorosso East India Solera - This one was my partners favorite and tasted sweet. It almost had a taste like raisins, but it was quite pleasant. The order also came with bread, though I'm not sure if it was the drinks or the oysters that triggered the bread. The bread was nice, but they did not offer butter with it. Instead, you could have olive oil, but it was a fancy olive oil so there was a charge. We opted to just eat the bread by itself and it was nice - crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. All in all, this was a bit of an expensive night (we did eat a lot though!) but it was well worth it. I do know there are $1 oysters around Boston, but $2 oysters near our home is also a great deal. The sherry flight was nice to try, but I'd also like to try their gin and gin mixed drinks, as they are known for both their sherry and gin. I give this a strong 4/5 and we will definitely be back! read more

Tapa-style dinner with friends Some tapas that we ordered were the ham and cheese croquetas, patata bravas, goat cheese toasts, and flan. My favorite had to be the goat cheese toast. This is a nice spot with good ambience - great for a fancier date night or professional dinner. But be prepared to shell out lots of money! It's basically a more expensive version of Barcelona with tinier portions. I'd recommend getting ~3 plates per person. Some highlights: - bravas - flan for dessert - gambas (shrimp) - goat cheese with toast (probably the highlight of our meal and very filling) I'd probably skip the cheese board as it contained a measly 5 tiny (but yummy) pieces of cheese. The outside patio is large, with lots of space for the tables. Highly recommended. The only reason this review is getting 3 stars is because there was one server for the night and she helped me charge my phone and get home when it was dead. Other than that the food service and bar service were extremely slow. I didn't bother ordering an actual meal because of it. I only ordered a meat platter appetizer and and wine flight that came with the croquettes. Wine flight came out like 50 minutes after. A group of men who's whole table got there after me were served a lot quicker than I was by myself. The wine flight wasn't even good. Again, I know it wasn't the server's fault, she was great given the circumstances. It's unfortunate that this place is around the corner for me and I won't be coming back. read more

Prices were somewhat high for pacifically that Americanized versions of Spanish dishes. I'm not really a beer drinker, but I did ask for their offering of nonalcoholic beers. Shockingly they said they carry none. Suggestion to the restaurant that they step into current times. Every single lunch and dinner establishment. Service was amazing and deserves 5 stars, but the size and quality of the food was not worth the money and brings this rating down. Taberna also includes 20% gratuity to all party sizes. Our waiter absolutely deserved a good tip, but it would be nice to have the option to tip based on quality of service. I'd recommend going to Barcelona or Toro for tapas instead. They did a great job with social distancing both inside and outside of the restaurant, and there is ample street parking nearby. All restaurant employees wore masks, tables were spaced more than 6 ft apart, and there was hand sanitizer available as well. We started with a salmorejo sopa, which was a cold soup that tasted heavily of olive oil with cold tomato purée and chunks of hard boiled eggs. This dish was absolutely disgusting. Next came the alcachofas - artichoke hearts with tiny, overcooked pieces of ham. This dish was okay but the artichokes were too salty, and the ham was too hard. The gambas was overcooked shrimp with a generous portion of olive oil and garlic. The sauce complemented the sourdough bread nicely, and this dish would have been my favorite if the shrimp was not overcooked. Espinacas was spinach with a lot of olive oil and salt with a hint of added texture from the pine nuts, raisins, and garlic. This was good but overpriced, and the few pine nuts and raisins did not distinctly distinguish the dish from regular spinach cooked at home. We finished the meal off with choricitos, which were tiny sausages with a smoky and spicy flavor. This was the most filling as the other tapas were very small. We finished our dinner with 5 items at Tatte next door as we were still hungry and didn't want to spend more money at Taberna. read more

After two visits, my wife and I can safely say that we like the food a great deal, but the service is extremely poor. It is largely a correctable organizational problem, although I'm not entirely sure they are up to it from the looks of things. The good part is that once an order is placed, the dishes come out efficiently and courteously. The big problem was getting anyone to take our order or approach us in any respect at all across both visits to the restaurant. Both times it was almost exactly the same - waitresses walked by us stonefaced, completely ignoring us. One visit we sat inside, once outside, and the result was the same. In neither case was the restaurant very busy. Last night I had to go back inside and ask one of the hostesses to send a waitress out to take our order. We had been sitting there for at least 10 minutes in a sparsely filled patio, unable to get even a hello from one of the multiple waitresses that walked by. On both visits, the same problem arose again when it was time either to order dessert or get a check. Plenty of waitresses in our area of the patio, but a failure to make eye contact, let alone ask if we needed any help. On the first visit, we eventually gave up on dessert. Last night, we were eventually able to flag down our waitress about dessert. Ironically, she proceeded to essentially recite the entire dessert menu, including every drink. All this is unfortunate in that the food is at least as good as some of the better tapas places in the area. Not every dish hits it out of the park, but overall it's a very solid, commendable menu. There's no question that this restaurant could be a lot busier, livelier, and more successful with measurably better service, but I think it would take either a consultant or a manager with a lot of experience. I'm not sure exactly what is going on here, but the situation is indicative of an owner/manager who cares about food and wants to do right by her guests, but is not a rigorous or systematic manager. One other thing that is probably symbolic of this broader issue is that almost all of the waitresses were inappropriately attired. The level of skimpiness was to a level of excess that most professional managers would require to be dialed back a bit. This is perhaps especially the case given that the crowd, at least on the nights we were there, seem to be a mostly older, Brookline neighborhood crowd. But even at a hipster restaurant, it would have been over the top by a few tics. read more

Came here with friends on a weeknight. They have a good variety of wine and tapas. We had the Conejo a la cazadora (rabbit braised with mountain herbs & mushrooms; white rice), chicken paella, Pulpo (Spanish octopus salad) and Berengena con mató (Griddled eggplant w house-made fresh cheese). The rabbit was tender and flavorful but super boney; literally with every bite you encounter broken bones embedded into the meat so that was disappointing. Picking meat out of my mouth every bite isn't my idea of a nice dinner out with friends. The other dishes were ok too although I personally liked the octopus the best. All said and done the dishes were decent though I'm still on the fence about whether the quality matched the cost. There is also room for improvement with respect to the menus. The big red book of wine is something we all found somewhat confusing. Also some of which we weren't sure was properly translated. Some of the best tapas I've ever had! Granted, I've never been to Spain, but everything I had here was delicious. We tried the Espinacas y Garbanzos, the Pollo al Ajillo, the Gambas al Ajillo, the Acelgas a la Catalana, the Queso de Cabra, and a Spanish tortilla, which I can't find on the menu now. The standouts were the Queso de Cabra, which was a mouthful of the most delicious goat cheese on toast, and the Spanish tortilla, which was perfectly seasoned and so addictive. Everything else was also excellent, and I'm embarrassed to admit I soaked up more than my fair share of spicy garlicky oil from all the ajillo dishes with their great bread. The atmosphere is dark, cozy, and trendy. It is definitely not cheap, and the portions range from decent (the chicken) to pretty small (the shrimp). I had less of a problem with it because I was treated to dinner here, but this would be a splurge meal by my standards. Small place on the corner of Beacon and St. Mary's. Street parking only. We were able to find a spot around the corner off of St. Mary's. The ambience is simple and serene. Definitely not kid-friendly, although we did bring our 5 year old and after his initial fit at the menu that did not include Mac N Cheese, he was eating Frogs legs in no time. Because this food. Oh my goodness. AMAZING. The chef takes the utmost care in all of his dishes. We had a big party so we got to try a lot of stuff! Gambas Al Ajillio - Shrimp was fresh but thought they needed a little more flavor. Frog legs with lemon, garlic and brandy - Super tasty, tender and well seasoned and yes very similar to a little chicken wing but with very small bones. Careful not to choke on one. The Grilled Eggplant with Saffron honey - The eggplant has a mild flavor but when charred on a grill it takes on a little bit of bitter sweetness that pairs well with the saffron honey. The texture is buttery and lends that perfect amount of richness to the sweetness of the honey. Complex flavors that really compliment each other. Warm Goat Cheese on Tomato Bread - Just delicious. Their bread is already so good so the goat cheese and tomato just takes it to another level. Patatas Bravas - A very popular spanish tapas dish. Nothing too exciting. Pretty spicy. Kind of just tastes like potato wedges in Frank's Red Hot. No offense to the chef - good just not as amazing as their other dishes. Griddled Oyster Mushrooms - They come nice and bubbly in a mini cast iron dish. I could eat these all day. Calamari - The squid is extra fresh and the dredge is light as can be. Best Calamari I have ever had. Jamon Iberico - The richest, most treasured ham in the land from Acorn-fed black hoofed pigs. I am so sorry to the beautiful little piggies but I can see why everyone in Spain loves to eat you. Pinchos Morunos - skewers of Moorish spiced pork - Super flavorful, all of the spices were superb, but just a tad chewy. For dessert we had the Trufas Porrera - house-made dark chocolate truffles showered with extra virgin olive oil, cocoa, sea salt (which the waitress adds at the table) You schmear that on some more of that wonderful rustic bread. Delicioso! Bienmesabe - lemon & paprika marinated haddock, fried - The most amazing haddock I've had in my whole life! I think it had the same dredge they use for the calamari. This was insanely good. This Haddock, changed my life. Give me that, a pitcher of that awesome Sangria and some of that bread. Happiness. Really disappointing experience. Food was bland and expensive. We were trying to try something other than Barcelona, but honestly, the food is much better and cheaper there. The menu and portion sizes weren't well described - when we asked how big the portions were to plan out how many tapas to get we got a vague answer to the tone of "get a few and see how you feel." Additionally, when I asked for clarification about what the peppers on the menu were stuffed with-I was told smoked fish. I was not told that the entire entree was three tiny peppers on a green salad. Definitely not worth the $18. My fiancé got the chicken and meatballs but complained the taste was bland as well. Lastly, management slapped on a 20% patio gratuity to the bill, which I felt was presumptuous and unexpected. It left a sour taste to an already poor experience. We spent $124 for two people and two glasses of wine, and won't be going back. Save yourself the trouble and go to Barcelona. read more

Frog legs were tasty as were the Spanish sausages. We ordered the chicken paella. It came out on time. Tasty but not a lot of crisp to the rice and we missed the addition of chorizo and/or shrimp to the dish. Good size pour on the drinks.
