Decided to book at the Oak on Fourteenth this past Saturday before the Ani DiFranco concert. I wanted to find a place that was close by, and not to difficult to tell our friend who was meeting us in Boulder. This seemed like the perfect place, so to Open Table to book.
When we arrived, we scurried in to get out of the bitter winds and cold that was whistling around Boulder that night. Although we were a few minutes past our reservation (because parking is NEVER easy in Boulder), we were seated promptly without a wait.
While still waiting for the 3rd of our party to join us, my friend and I decided to order a few apps to hold us over and of course drinks. I will admit I booked this place based on the drink menu alone. :) However when it came time to decide what to have, I wanted to go adventurous, besides my standby of a good craft beer, and so I asked our server, what was a few of the ingredients in the drink I was considering. He not only told me I picked a great one, but that it will be refreshing. Of course the name of the drink escapes me now :( My friend, who has become obsessed with her own version of Moscow Mule, decided to order one here. Little did we know, until our great server George informed us, that Oak actually makes their own ginger beer and bottles it. You could tell how great it was, after one sip of her drink. I immediately ordered one of those, once my drink was drained.
For appetizers we got a bit more adventerous. We ordered the Hamachi "Crudo" with Tomatillo. I must admit, the mint that was placed on it, threw me off (I love mint flavored things, but things with mint leaves on them bother me. The tomatillos were fabulous though, however, the hamachi was drowned by the salty soy sauce and was sadly, not as good.
Our other app was the Squid Ink Gnocchi and Oak Grilled Calamari. One word..YUM! there we breadcrumbs that sprinkled the top and while I am watching my carbs...it was hard not to eat up tons that night!
When our 3rd party member arrived, we ordered more Moscow Mules and a 3rd app..the Blue Goat Cheese and Skillet Cornbread. Let me just say I am not a fan of Cornbread but this one was SOOOO moist. My two friends who are lovers of goat cheese, snarfed up the hunk that was on top of the cornbread, quite happy. George also let us know that all of the appetizer was locally grown, from the blue cheese that came from the western slope, to the cherries, to the Corn from the cornbread. Made me feel good to know we were eating local and you could tell in the taste!
Lastly for dinner...we went with two options. One of my friends, and myself had the NY Beefstriploin with Whipped Potatoes and Baby Artichokes. While I am not a fan of artichokes,I gobbled up the steak. I had just had steak two days earlier in San Francisco, and this one beat that one for sure. My other friend ordered the Striped Bass, unsure after a bad fish experience a week before at a restaurant in Loveland if she was going to be disappointed again. To her surprise her faith was 110% renewed in fish, as her Bass was cooked perfectly, and the Olives and Chickpeas that came with it, made her quite happy.
Overall, this meal was superb. The only reason I give it 4 stars..is because it was quite loud in the restaurant. Although, that IS a sign it is a good place if there were enough diners to cause the decibel levels to raise, correct? :)
I would definitely go back here again. A great start to a fabulous evening before our concert at the Boulder Theater! read more
