This was a really special dinner, a fundraiser for a local support group for the Ukrainian people who are faced with the war by Russia to destroy and take their country. The group Sunflower Seeds Ukraine is headquartered near Boulder and across the city, on two days this week there are events under the name, DINE OUT FOR Ukraine. This dinner at the Chautauqua Dining Hall is the first we are attending. The menu was created and cooked by the chef staff here, using modern high-end takes on Ukraine menu classics. It was beautiful, tasty and we loved it. By the time we learned of it, most seatings were sold out for the earlier time slots because a Ukrainian Quartet was performing at 7:30pm in the nearby Chautauqua Auditorium and many diners were going to both. We did not have tickets for the concert so we ate towards the end of the available Ukraine item service, though they were just fine. The regular menu was also available all evening for those who wanted it. I was familiar with many of these classic selections having eaten some my entire life and even made some myself years ago. My family is not from Ukraine but originated in that general geographic area so many common foods were available and my grandparents emigrated with similar recipes. There were drinks themed to the dinner too, a Mocktail for me and a Spritz for my husband which he generously let me taste. I loved both. The names and ingredients are on the pictured menu I posted. The Amuse to start was a Beet Borscht, each cleverly served in a small, tall glass. It was thick enough with pureed ingredients that it needed a tiny demitasse spoon for eating. The waitstaff could only find one in the stock still clean, so while they looked for more, my husband and I shared the one they had found. Quite funny actually but another time, the staff should be better prepared for such a possibility and have washed a few mid service. The taste was great, the texture was so different from my family recipe, which was a more soup tradition, this added surprise. But the beet flavor shone through, both ways. The first course was the Holubsti, a beef, rice "meatball" wrapped in cooked cabbage, spiced with onion and dill in a tomato purée whereas our home tradition was more of a tomato, ginger sauce. The entrée was Chicken Kiev, common in restaurants around this country, and was served with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. Nothing my mother ever made! We always had plain roast chicken and boiled potatoes. The dessert was decadent with cream, almost a crêpe but thinner, stuffed with cream and topped with peach compote, the whole thing swirled with cherry coulis. Colors and tastes blended well. The peaches, a touch of Colorado. I was so pleased to have been a part, knowing a good deal of the cost was donated to such a good cause. They also had a table of Ukraine themed items to sell, staffed with their own volunteers, set up near the entrance. I am sure the music was worth the ticket price as we could hear some of it as we left and we hope there will be another time in the future to hear this group. The kitchen, the servers and the decor of the Dining Hall seating were good choices for such a fundraiser. We really do love Chautauqua and we will return to the Dining Hall for their Thanksgiving meal this year. read more

You know how places at parks can have so-so food, tired menus? NOT THIS ONE! We had the Huevos Rancheros and Beet/Salmon salad, both excellent, unique in their flavors and although it was an odd combo, we absolutely LOVED them! Josh, our waiter, informed us up front that if he was short it's because he was busy and he certainly was. But all his timing was right on and we felt taken care of without long waits for anything. We would certainly have returned if we were there longer as there were many dishes both vegan, vegetarian and for meat eaters alike. Even though it was a 90+ degree day the porch was pleasant to sit and enjoy. Lemonade wasn't too sweet and if we'd had room we would have had the blueberry cashew Lady Grey cheesecake. He said it was also excellent and I bet it is! read more

The Chautauqua Dining hall had a interesting history as a summer school and meeting place that became a historical landmark. It was a beautiful building with a porch that we could dine on. You can also see the flatirons and hike it or have a picnic on the lawn right outside the building! The colorado omelette was a good option if you want a hearty meal with lots of veggies (including roasted hatch chilis) and ham, topped with sprouts. You could choose a side so I went with the fruit cup, which came with melons and grape. They are known for their chai so I went with an iced chai, which was refreshing and not too sweet. I also tried the beignets, which were more cakey (like a donut) than airy. It was busy so we did have some delay as they mixed up one of our orders, but they were able to fix it in the end. Make sure to make a reservation to ensure your spot, although they don't take reservations for weekend brunches. Parking is not free and is tricky as the lots surrounding the restaurant were full, but there are side streets where you can pay to park. read more

After a long hike, this quaint dining hall delivers the perfect brunch treat. The food, ambiance and staff were so kind, we came back two days in a row! Shoutout to Mia for her amazing service and taste test of one of the delectable pastries! Food reviews: Cocktails--incredible! Perfectly balanced and unique. El Pepino was light and refreshing while the Blueberry Old Fashioned was a bold and fruity take on a classic, without being overly sweet Avocado toast--bright citrus from the salad and creaminess from the eggs pair perfectly together. Great scenery and a wonderful spot to sit outdoors and enjoy some food. We only had a 20 min wait though parking was a bit of a challenge. Server was very helpful and food was pretty good. Very nice dining experience at the Dining Hall, especially sitting on the outside porch and enjoying the magnificent surroundings and beautiful weather. We ate dinner and breakfasts here and each meal was special. Dinner of braised bison and the trout were all prepared well and tasted great. What's more? Very reasonably priced. The one complaint, is there are (almost) no vegetables with the entrees, despite the menu description. Consider ordering a side. The produce and meats are sourced from a local farm, so this is truly a farm to table place. Breakfast was done well as well. Service was exceptional by friendly and helpful staff. Love this place! The close proximity to the Flatirons and the drive up Flagstaff is super convenient. And the food was outstanding! The loaded tots were not your frozen tots with a bunch of stuff on top- it was homemade crispy tater tots with the best green chile and cheese... the breakfast burrito is huge! And yummy. And the eggs Benedict were cooked perfectly. And to top it all off, sitting on the porch hearing birds chirping nearby was a great finish to a wonderful morning! Come for the view... the food is good also. My first trip to Boulder but I expect to come back. I had heard of this area for the hikes and was told if you can get your name on the list, to absolutely dine here. They are very nice and we were fortunate to get a seat outside on the patio looking directly at the mountains. With that food, who would even notice the food. I went with the traditional, or "Chautauqua" breakfast with eggs and chose sausage as my meat choice. For the side I had fresh fruit and it didn't come with toast so I had to order this extra. For a drink, just a simple iced tea. For starters, there are some places that make freshly brewed iced tea and some that don't... this place does not make it freshly brewed and if they are to write back saying they do... I would have to strongly disagree or at least, the glass I had was not "fresh". My eggs were okay, but really how can you make bad scrambled eggs? The sausage was okay... they are link sausage and nothing special about them; not spicy or again, anything special. I know they had other dishes, but I really wanted eggs and when it comes to egg choices, it seems to be this, an omelette or eggs Benedict. I'm used to a few more choices especially when it comes to eggs such as being able to add things to the egg scramble. So, if it weren't for the view, I don't know that I would come back to this place. This isn't to say the food isn't good but there are other choices in Boulder. read more

Pretty good restaurant located right next to chautauqua park. Service was slow at first when we were first seated but then it got better. Everyone was super friendly and attentive. We celebrated a birthday and they gave us a free dessert and brought out a candle which was nice. We liked the ambiance and the rustic decor. It was a bit hot in there though I was definitely sweating. Overall thought the food was pretty good with some improvements to be made. The starter we had was the blue cheese crumble cake thing. That was everyone's favorite dish and was really good. There could have been more bread, but everything else about it was awesome. I had the summit blintz. The blintz was cooked well and was good. The filling with the chicken and spinach was a bit under seasoned but tasted good. Wasn't a huge fan of the sauce. It was too sour and the consistency was too thick. I think a couple poached eggs over the blintz would work better or maybe if the sauce was lemon and dill or something and more thin because the texture of it with the all the mustard was slightly off for me. The scrambled eggs on the side were ok. They weren't creamy or soft at all but the seasoning was ok. Everyone else had the smoked salmon Benedict and the fried chicken sandwich. Apparently the chicken was a bit dry but good otherwise. For dessert we got the vegan cashew cheesecake. The texture was surprisingly nice for a vegan cheesecake and the blueberry compote on top was the perfect amount of sweet and tart. Was on the tart side but that's why I loved it so much. Literally could eat that all the time. The cheesecake didn't have any earl grey flavor though which was a bummer. Overall a good place with a few misses. Would recommend. read more

Dog friendly-ish. They let your dog be on the grass outside the tail on the patio. If they're well behaved and it's not busy, you can maybe get away with them under your feet. We were pleasantly surprised that the food was decent. Especially good were the Brussel Sprouts and the roasted potato sides. BF said his steak was mid. My trout was tasty but small portion. We had a couple cocktails, we both liked my strawberry rhubarb drink (refreshing) but his tequila orange old fashioned had too much going on (warning, it's got a kick). Oh, and their lemon meringue pie was delicious. The next day we wanted to get takeout to eat at the cottage but the hostess on the phone repeatedly transferred me to the bar to give my order but they never picked up the phone. So walked down to order in person with my dog in tow and she again asked me to order at the bar. My dog gets overwhelmed in busy places so I asked if I could write down my order and give to her to give to the bar and then she said I can just order for you. I give her my entire order, then she tells me go ahead and order at the bar after all. I'm assuming the hostesses don't get any of that tip so she really did not want to help me. Frustrating experience. So as long as you don't have a dog and you don't order for takeout, it's a fine place. read more

We were introduced to this place by friends that used to live in Denver. We had a wonderful experience, starting with a very warm welcome from the hostess as she took us to a perfect table with a view of the park. There were so many great breakfast options that it was hard to choose. I had the avocado toast and arugula salad which was a delicious and generous serving. My husband and I went to the dining hall to celebrate our 6th anniversary and it was so special. I loved that the vibe was casual yet upscale. You could have a burger, salad, or a special dinner plate and all of it would be delicious. They source vegetables from their local farm and you could taste the freshness in the tomatoes that were part of the Bruschetta appetizer. That dish was so amazing! We both ordered steak frites for our main dish and loved it. The steak was flavorful and tender. And the truffle Parmesan fries were the best! For dessert we enjoyed a 5 layer chocolate cake. I can't forget to mention the homemade corn bread and applesauce that come with your meal. That cornbread was probably the best I've ever had! We also enjoyed a refreshing sangria. I've been here a few times now, sometimes with my large dog. When it is not crowded he can lay beside me, else they ask that he is on the lawn beside my table. House-made bean burger is good (pickled onions, yum), as is the roasted beet sandwich. Fries are shoestring style. Good number of beers on tap, including rotating local ones. I've had their mescal cocktail, it's good not amazing. Crispy brussel sprouts are delicious and unique with peppadew and preserved lemon. What a truly wonderful experience! I absolutely adored everything about dining here. All of the servers were very kind and personable. We were seated promptly upon arriving and our food came out quickly. I wondered if a place with such a gorgeous view would rely on solely that and serve mediocre food, but I was totally wrong. We had the chili tater tots, bison burger, and Chautauqua burger-- all were seriously phenomenal. Delicious flavor combinations and the burgers were cooked perfectly. We were lucky to be here on a gorgeous day and enjoyed the sights from the patio (my picture doesn't begin to do it justice). The indoor seating looked great, too-- the whole restaurant was so charming and tastefully done. I'd never visited this area and the environment really blew me away. I was recommended this place while in town and it did not disappoint! Super convenient to come off the trail and quickly be seated. I did feel bad about my grubby clothes but my friend assured me we were fine. Our server was very friendly and attentive as we near situated so close to the bar/kitchen entrance. While waiting for our food we admired the decor throughout-it was so lovely and rustic and not too busy since we were having an early dinner. We shared a Blue Cheese Cake-dried fruit, peach mostarda, honeycomb toffee, fried basil, grilled sourdough. The cheese was lovely but for 2 there were 3 sourdough pieces I wish that they had done 4 instead. I had a Southwest Torta-carne asada, red chimichurri, white cheddar, butter lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion, sourdough. It had a great flavor profile but the carne asada chunks were too large to bite and a bit tough to separate. Overall, we had a great time! We were going to go into town, but the hike was much longer and this was such a quaint spot overlooking the park that we decided to go here. It was a little cold that day, so the tea was nice to have to warm up to. Definitely a great place to brunch. The atmosphere at Chautauqua is always spectacular. Cozy inside in the winter, charming on the porch in the summer. Dogs are not allowed on all parts of the porch, which means tying their leashes to the bushes down below the porch. It's odd; I don't understand the rules. Many things on the menu are good, but I need to warn diners not to get the savory SUMMIT BLINTZ (creamed chicken, spinach, spicy Dijon alfredo, scallion, two eggs any style) on the brunch menu. It is a blintz filled with creamed chicken and covered in a mustard hollandaise that is way too salty and doesn't have much texture. Too many sauces in one place! The American Onion soup is a disappointing version of French Onion soup - cheddar will never be the same as Gruyère. They should just serve the classic, but they don't. I'll be back, but I will not be adventurous in ordering. read more

We love dining at Chautauqua - the staff are great and the food is very good. There is just one problem and it's kind of become a serious issue: the food is often not hot. I've had this problem several times with the soups. The other night I ordered the pasta. The pasta dish itself was delicious, studded with fresh vegetables, the sauce nicely seasoned and in perfect proportion. But is was just sort of... warmish. When I took a bite from the other side of the bowl it wasn't even warm, it was room temperature. This kind of ruined a very nice dish. I asked if there was anything they could do to heat it up and there wasn't, so they remade it. It was remade badly and sloppily, but they were kind enough to do it, so I ate it. In retrospect, I should've just asked for a to-go box for the first dish and I could've taken it home and *heated* it for dinner the next day, my mistake. My partner and I eat out quite often, and often at nice places. Other restaurants manage to serve their food hot or at least very warm, so I don't quite know what's going on at Chautauqua. But I wish they'd fix it or I'll be stuck just ordering salads from now on. read more

This historic building and location is special- although, the 'Big' country salad was less than interesting. I was hopeful knowing the menu was changed about a year ago- whenever 'experts' make financial decisions, something is lost. A smaller platter with a humble portion of shredded lettuce, some bacon crumbles, one egg and a tiny ramikin of blue cheese was hardly a meal. Oh, there was a indistinguishable piece if deeply fried chicken that was unremarkable. My friend's grits and shrimp looked much better. Waitress rubbing face and eyes, then handling our food - :-/ We have entered a new age of service and lesser quality to meet and exceed the bottom line all round. I will return to this spot again, as I have for years, but with less gusto. read more

While staying at Chautauqua Park, we ate two dinners at the Chautauqua Dining Hall which had the best view on the deck overlooking the park and Flatirons. Would recommend eating outside and timing it with sunset if you can! My favorites were the Chilean Salmon, the Big Country Salad, and the complimentary warm cornbread served with applesauce. The salmon had an achiote marinade and was served with mango salsa, a sweet pea puree, crispy garlic and sesame - a lovely combination of textures and flavors. The fried chicken on the salad was also delicious. The Colorado Trout wasn't my favorite - if you're feeling like fish, the salmon is the way to go. We also tried the Blue Cheese cake appetizer which is one of the most unique dishes I've seen - it's essentially a cheesecake made of blue cheese. It comes on a graham cracker crust with dried fruit, peach mostarda, honeycomb toffee, fried basil and grilled sourdough. It did not sound the most appetizing at first but our waiter explained it as a cheese plate in a different form (very true) and I ended up really enjoying it! Service was a bit slow but the food and views made up for it. Overall, a great tucked away spot to eat in Boulder! read more

YUM!! I love this place. It is in such a good location. The service was amazing even though they were SO BUSY! We sat at the bar and they were so great. My sister got the burrito and it was delicious. I LOVE spicy chicken sandwiches and was very impressed with this one. It was a hard decision on what to order so I can't wait to go back and try more things. It was a cute little dining hall with lots of seating and seemed great for family and friends! I had read about Chautauqua dining hall and we were lucky enough to get there at a time when we could get a table easily. The food was so yummy. Everything we got was great including a regular coffee, which you never know if it's gonna be good or not, but this was.! our server Chloe was absolutely adorable.
