TLDR: Found gross hair in expensive and mediocre food, waitress got angry *at me*. Really wanted to like this place. Super crowded, so I had high hopes. Breakfast burrito is $18, coke another $3, 20% tip and taxes and I'm looking at around $30 for a breakfast burrito. Oh well, it's the only game in town. Dude behind the counter seemed chill, I'll roll with it, I thought. After ordering/paying/tipping, grab an available table that I had to clear off myself. The other two available were similarly still filled with the last diner's dishes even though nobody had been sitting there the 15 mins I'd been in line. Oh well, again, only game in town, right? Waitress eventually (they were busy, not dinging her here) brings me out my order and I notice a GIANT and very obvious long hair down the length of the burrito swimming in the green chile and melted cheese. I point it out to her with a smile, figuring this happens. Simple enough to fix. She shrugs irritably and has a "so what" expression on her face. Now, maybe it's just me (and probably the health inspector) but after spending $30 on a burrito and bussing the last person's table, I'd kind of like - pretty please - to NOT have hair swimming in liquid atop my food. So I asked if I could please get another $30 burrito, which seems reasonable. She rolls her eyes, asks exasperated "you want another?!" and walks off before coming back and literally slamming another on my table in clear anger before storming off. Shoulda walked out then, but I was hungry and at this point didn't think making a whole scene requesting a refund was worth it. So I ate the very mediocre burrito and left. Like I said, really wanted to like the place, but service like that at prices like that? No thanks, plenty of places to get better burritos at a third of the price with a tenth of the 'tude. read more

My family and I came this weekend with a local family member. The restaurant was slammed beyond anything he has ever seen, so that may explain why breakfast took well over an hour to get. I'm willing to say that was due to how busy they were. Mercantile is a fun looking small restaurant with outdoor seating across the street. It has this old timey western saloon feeling that is fun. They also had a decent area with kids books and toys. That was very needed for our kid due to the wait. Prices are a bit high albeit considering the location maybe they are fine. The poached eggs looked great as did the Bloody Mary. My breakfast burrito was very big but I didn't find it particularly tasty. While it does come with spicy green sauce the burrito didn't have too much flavor. I think I would come again, but def watch out for popular days or weekends. Oh and big shout out the the woman server. That woman was practically running around trying to get food to the right spot. She was working hard and deserves the big tip I left and hopefully others left. read more

We drove up for Sunday brunch and had the smoked trout and the Bennie of the day. Absolutely delicious! I don't really mind that parking can be a hassle or you get your own drinks. Service was prompt considering it was a full restaurant when we got there (we opted to sit outside). The ambiance is friendly and relaxed and it seems half of Jamestown was there when we came over. The food was amazing, I ordered the Cajun crab benedict and my husband ordered the pork belly hash. Both meals we so delicious and the hollandaise sauce I had was the best I've had thus far! I can't remember the last time I was so impressed with a meal! My parents are in town for the weekend and we decided to drive up to Jamestown for brunch. I have been to the Jamestown Merc many times for music and for their delicious Summertime wood fired pizzas, ambiance, drinks and sunshine. But today (Thursday) I was curious to try their special, Gumbo and it was delicious. Lots of flavor, spices and cooked just right. I added a side of cornbread which was moist and full of flavor too. We are staying at at wonderful VRBO just down the road from the Merc. Our first meal was on Friday night. The tapas selection was varied so we all ordered something different. The food was creative and delicious! We had beef sliders with bacon jam, a mushroom pasta and a tempeh kabob that was out of this world! My husband was sure that he was eating beef instead of tempeh. A wonderful band was playing and the staff and customers were friendly and welcoming. It was such a fabulous experience that we went back again for Mother's Day Brunch where we saw quite a few familiar faces from Friday night. We again all order a variety of meals from the breakfast burrito to the crab cake benedict served with a fresh salad and a wonderfully lemon hollandaise sauce. A single musician provided nice relaxing music throughout the brunch, and mimosas were served to all females, breeding not required;) Our only regret was that the Merc was going to be closed on our last two days of vacation, otherwise we would have had a few more meals there. The Merc is a gem! I would highly suggest making your way to Jamestown if you are in the Boulder area and stopping at the Merc. You won't be disappointed! read more

Going up with prices but downhill with service. Some days the service is fine (George, Rainbow, Kirk), other days the order is not given to the kitchen accurately and the excuse is lame (always the same guy). Don't put the guy with problems paying attention at the front - that's where the dialed in peeps belong. It's getting old repeating the order, getting the wrong order, letting the orders get cold at the window... totally minor league. read more

We hit 'the Merc" for breakfast for my hubby's birthday last week. What a great little spot! Takes some patience to get here from neighboring towns as they are reworking the road that got washed out by the floods, but its super worth it. The building is old, really old, and the interior is just adorable. It kind of feels like someone's home with mismatched furniture, stacks of books and games, and sofas with a sitting area. We went on a Saturday morning for breakfast and the place was filled with locals. I got their eggs Benedict florentine- definitely a winner- lots of veggies, hollandaise that is clearly made from scratch, and really tasty eggs. Their coffee is also great. My husband got their breakfast burrito and it was enormous. They have live music on Thursday and Friday nights, and the staff is super friendly. We'll be back. Its a great spot to grab breakfast if you're heading up into the mountains. read more

I have ridden my bike up to Jamestown many times over the years. Every now and again I try The Merc. Every time I've been disappointed, so I am surprised to read the other reviews. The waitstaff has always been friendly, but the cooks and I think the owner have always seemed so angry, fake, and unfriendly. The food that comes out of the filthy kitchen is not great and is surprisingly expensive. The pies sound great with really interesting combinations, but they taste awful --- under baked crust and just too damn sweet. The hours of operations also seem inconsistent. It's a bummer because it's a beautiful ride and there is no where else to eat in Jamestown. It is really nice of them to put a water cooler outside for cyclists, though. That being said, the County is starting construction in James Canyon this month for the next year. Apparently the road is going to be torn up and partially closed. Looks like none of us will be even be able to ride up there. read more

Super cool mountain town vibe. Kirk was kind, helpful, and really friendly. He recommended the Superjames Bar (yum!!!) and told me about the cycling route there, which I will leave to the experts til I get used to the altitude, among other things. I wish I were still in town for a Thurs - Sat as I would have loved to have returned to hear the local musicians. When I'm back in the Boulder area, I'll return for sure. read more

I grew up in Jamestown, and the Merc was The Place for everyone in town to hang out. There's live music and food some weekends, and you can always get in for breakfast or lunch. The staff is all local and fun, the place has always had a great atmosphere. The building itself is historical -- it really was the mercantile when Jamestown was a mining community... I've heard rumors that during the big gold boom in the canyon, ladies "worked" upstairs, where now there are apartments. The food isn't the reason to come here, the locals and the atmosphere are. The food isn't bad, but be prepared for a small-town diner experience. And be sure to read the menu top-to-bottom for some hilarious jabs at some of our more colorful longtime residents! read more

Great time here last Monday night. Our first time back since the flood. Was burger and open mic night. The burgers were great. Lots of options. The bun was particularly good. Burger is not too large. A must try. Had a nice selection of wines. We each had a French Pinot Noir that was well balanced. Their wine by the glass selection was pretty extensive and worth exploring. I cannot say enough things about the Merc. It's a lovely, charming, quaint establishment tucked away in the mountains. It's a beautiful surprise. The people there were so friendly and welcoming. As someone who grew up in a city and is used to forking over a credit card before you can drink anything anywhere, I found it incredibly refreshing that at the Merc, they trust that you'll settle up at the end of the night and track your tab on a simple piece of paper. The food is good, and I appreciate the adventurous nature of the menu. Not afraid of flavor, not afraid of spice. It's the type of place where outsiders are obvious but not unwelcomed. And I thought it was absolutely awesome that they put out a number of big coolers of cold water for the bikers who are traversing the road. Everyone just stops and helps themselves. The vibe in Jamestown in general is relaxed and casual, and the Merc is the perfect local establishment. read more

Love the Merc The negative reviews are mostly about the wait and the casual sit-wherever-you-find-a-table attitude of the place. The owners are super friendly, but understandably harried when it's busy cause of the small kitchen. The baked goods are iffy and not always great. I suggest ordering fresh food from the menu and not baked goods. It's a throwback place in the middle of nowhere, so relax, take your time and don't expect a pace you'd expect in a place in town. read more

I spent my summers growing up in Jamestown and this place was one I visited quite often! The food is good and the people who work there are very social and friendly. Coming in as a 'outsider' i always felt welcomed there and still get that feeling there today. The town is small so you get that nice gossip epicenter feel with your morning coffee in town of 200 people. The patio seating is great too! Its right out front on the main road so you can people watch or chat or read the paper while waiting for your food. Th town is VERY dog friendly so if you are looking for a place to grab a bite to eat with your dog they will welcome you without a second thought. They have a water bowl for dogs and its uncommon to go there and not see a dog while you are their. BONUS! There is a nice little park across the street to sit by the creek, read a book or play fetch with you dog. read more

What an awesome find! Some of the best breakfast we've had in a long time. I had the Chile rellenos which were just delicious. My fiancé had your typical American breakfast with some great hash browns and toast with homemade strawberry jam. They do giant mimosas and have a ton of fresh baked goods. I guess you have to be a local or a regular or something to get anybody to serve you. Walked in, someone rudely told us there's no list to put our names on, just to grab a seat whenever one opens up. When one opened up, a different waitress told us (also rudely) that I HAVENT WIPED THAT TABLE DOWN YET AND YOU'RE NOT NEXT ANYWAY". I love the Merc. We live in Denver and go up to Jamestown often. The Hangover Cure is the best breakfast combination ever invented...Chile Rellenos with eggs on top. HELLO! The Merc is super kid-friendly and Thursday and Saturday night dinners with music are great. You can bring your kids and have a fun night out with them.
