If you haven't made it here, you should go! I went with a friend and somehow managed to completely miss the restaurant and just found the deli portion, but that was an awesome experience within itself. Because everything laid out is freshly made, they were also able to customize menu items according to your preferences. I ordered a gorgonzola pizza and the person behind the counter stopped me to make sure I knew what it was so that I would't have a bad experience. Needless to say the pizza was spectacular - but then I'm a sucker for anything wood and fire baked. My friend got the avocado egg toast. You can't really go wrong with that. Okay so dessert. The tiramisu was probably one of the best I've had in Austin. I recently made it to the actual restaurant portion and while nice and food is similarly great, I prefer the casual feel of the cafe for lunch. I was in Downtown Austin, with relatives and we were hungry. We decided to eat at Numero28 even though it was late, the restaurant was busy and we had to wait for a little while, which is fine with me. The wait staff called us and we arrived at out table only after waiting 15 minutes at the most. We ordered an appetizer of Calamari but they were sold out. We agreed to just having a small bowl of olives to snack on. The time came to order our meals. We put in our order for a Pizza, a serving of lasagna and a plate of spaghetti with meatballs. The food came out after a a bit of a wait, but arrived cooked to perfection and was absolutely delicious. The pizza and pasta at Numero28 is fantastic and completely worth the experience. Wow! This place was amazing. The street parking was surprisingly plentiful around lunch time today, and the exterior of the restaurant is very cozy. The staff inside were professional and knowledgeable about the menu. They also made good conversation with my sister and I. And now the food, amazing!! The pasta was stellar. Last time we ate at Numero 28 I had the Cacio de Pepe and it was fabulous. This afternoon we were feeling like having a good pizza so we went in around 3PM. We waited outside at the hostess stand for a while before anyone noticed that we were waiting. After we were seated we promptly ordered our pizza. In the interim, I went to the ladies room which was dirty and smelled awful. My husband asked for some bread and olive oil. The bread was cold and did not taste fresh. The pizza arrived but the waiter did not bother to notice that we did not have plates so we had to flag someone down and ask for plates. The pizza was good but after we finished we sat around waiting for the bill while our waiter and a few others were sitting down eating. Once again we had to flag down a waiter to ask for the check. I might be able to understand a lapse in service if they were really busy or short-staffed but this was not the situation. Seemed like the gentleman and his family that own and operate the restaurant were not there today and his employees were definitely taking it easy. read more

Took a quick vacation to Austin two weeks ago....Food scene was just Okay. That changed to VERY good when we stumbled upon No28 on W 2nd We were greeted, seated and everything was great. The waiter/bartender mixed perfect cocktails with Tito's as the well Vodka (yes Puleez) burnt lime on the rim and just yummy. The pizza was authentic and actually took a slice home because of the generous portions. Now, the reason I took a few minutes to write this review. We thought our waiter/barkeep was the owner. When I asked if he was, indeed, the owner...he replied " No, I am just a passionate employee" His name is LEO Find him and have a wonderful dining experience !! I was so excited to go to this restaurant because it's been talked about so much recently and all over social media. It was all good until about 10 minutes into the dinner. There was a roach that got on our table and climbed into our water. After not trying to make a big deal out of it and just moving to another table ANOTHER roach was on the bench we were sitting at. At this point, we were grossed out and wanted to get out food to go. I asked the server and manager for some sort of slight discount at least because it completely ruined our dinner. We visited this place yesterday, my husband, me and a friend. We had medium pizza half meat, half vegetarian, and cannelloni con funghi, and hazelnut gelato. Everything was very good! Pizza crispy and with good amount of toppings, cannelloni and especially their mushroom sauce were great, and ice cream - you just need to go and try it yourself! Only one tiny complain - gelato was served in small plastic cups that are smaller than a size of ice cream scoop, so if you do not eat it fast it will start melting and dropping on your table or fingers. read more

Unique and fun spot in the lively downtown 2nd street district. We enjoy sitting outside on the patio. I recommend the chef's cheese & meat plate to share. Always a delicious selection. That and a bottle of red wine is really all you need. Indoors, it can get a bit cozy, but the fun is watching the cooks in action. There is a pasta with vegetables that they make on the stove -- flipping the pasta to mix it as they work -- and it tastes as good as it looks. Nothing like the generic "Italian" you find in other restaurants. The flavors are bold, everything smells and tastes great. The waiters can be a bit brusque, perhaps, but that seems to be part of the charm. They keep you supplied with cold water outside, and will be happy to bring you more vino as well. read more

If you are black, do not go here. They will make you feel like you do not belong there, and belittle you. Worst experience ever. I was ignored for 10+ minutes standing to be seated while there was nobody in line. Once I got a seat, the manager came up and asked me what I was doing here and if I was a customer. The manager also does not give two s**ts about his customers. The Margherita pizza was the worst pizza I have ever had. It tested like cardboard pizza from the grocery store. I recently had the good fortune of eating at this fantastic little Italian restaurant in Austin, TX. Upon entering the outdoor seating area, a nice young man asked me if I wanted to risk sitting outside (as rain was coming) or if I preferred to eat inside. It was a warm day and I opted to eat inside, a decision I was glad I had made as it was raining by the time I left the restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant, the combined scents of rosemary and olive oil along with baked bread were astounding. The decor is rustic and it feels upscale despite its casual aesthetic. One of the waiters, who later said he was from Padua, Italy, was singing in Italian throughout my visit. It lent an authentic-feeling experience to the environment. I have a rule about trying a new Italian restaurant: If they don't make a good spaghetti and meatball, then why are they in business? I have to say that Numero 28 completely nailed it and I have seldom had such an amazing "spaghetti polpette" in my life. The meatballs were dense and had a slight crunchiness on the exterior. The sauce had enough balance to be neither completely sweet nor completely sour. It was flavorful and I didn't want to stop eating it! The salad "alla cesare" was fresh, but the dressing was a tad on the anchovy-heavy side. I don't mind anchovy in the dressing, but this dressing was a bit much. That could truly just be a preference though because I prefer more parmesan in my Caesar dressing. Overall, this was such a good place that I recommended it to some friends who visited it for dinner that same day and had only good things to say about their experience. Should I visit Austin again, I will make a bee-line for Numero 28! read more

My original review slammed this place after they first opened. Since, I have become a regular and just remembered to check back in on the review. The pizza is excellent and this place has an authentic feel and taste, because, well, it is authentic. The service has improved considerably. I will say the employees do seem nervous and under pressure most of the time. I know the restaurant business is demanding, but the leadership should bear most of this burden. Still, I recommend stopping by and, if you had a bad experience like I did; then give this place another shot. read more

Reminded me of the authentic Italian restaurants in France that are in Paris in the elongated brick buildings. The food was so good! Also, the owners were super friendly and inviting. We were just walking along by the Austin public library and this girl walks by with three huge rectangular boxes of pizza. She recommended Numero28 by far over North Italia, and now, so do I! We had everything food on the happy hour menu and everything was delicious! Their mint cucumber rum cocktail was very refreshing. We will definitely be back and bring our family and friends with us! Should have had plenty of time to get a happy hour drink in but was ignored till 30 seconds after and told too late. Kinda rudely. I forgot how wonderful Number0 28 is. We stumbled upon it again last night on our way to the movies! The caprese salad was amazing, the marghertia pizza better or just as good as any in Italy or the Northeast region of the US (NY, NJ, Boston) and the Cacio a Pepe was served amazingly and was delicious. To top it off, the staff is so congenial and friendly and even speaks Italian and the outdoor setting along with the temperature (mother nature here) was amazing. What a great experience. read more

We came to this place after hiking in the rain for a couple hours. To be honest we looked a little rough, but also it had been raining all day. We weren't greeted when we came in even though we were standing with a group of people who were all individually greeted by the bartender who came around the bar. They have gelato up front and a La Spaziale espresso machine which was awesome to see in an Italian restaurant (although we tried neither). We sat down in an area that is a wall of booths with chairs on the other side. There were cabinets on the wall. (Weird? They were high up and had wine bottles on top, is it storage? Is it decoration? Unsure) we were greeted quickly by Lorena who told us some of her favorites, calamari, or meatballs for an appetizer or The prosciutto pizza, and she told us what size would be good for two. The pizza came out and looked great on this huge wood slab, a real showpiece. It had slightly spicy red sauce, arugula and some really thick prosciutto. It almost felt like deli meat, but was really tasty. The crust was thin, which I'm into, and crispy but not burnt. The servers were cool but we had two, so I wasn't really sure who belonged to us, and neither said their name? We sneaked it from the check. All in all, a cool little place. I'm excited to go back and try some other food! I bet they have awesome things on their menu after our first glance. read more

Unfortunately my experience with Numero 28 was not a positive one. I ordered a pizza and salad to the drive-in theater in downtown (associated with the drive-in on their website) and no utensils were delivered to me. Since I was at a drive-in theater in my car, I could not obtain utensils otherwise so there would be no way to eat my salad. Thinking this was an innocent mistake, I contacted Numero 28 to request utensils be delivered to me. The response was shockingly rude. I explained my situation to the woman who answered the phone and her response was "I don't know what you're asking, hold on", she held the phone away from her and yelled to someone else "Can somebody else deal with this person?"... Shocked, I blundered through explaining to the next person who answered the phone my situation. His response, "This is not our problem, contact your delivery service." No apology, no attempt to make the situation right. When I asked him if there was anything he could do to help he said, "Just come by and grab utensils if you need them so badly." I love supporting local Austin businesses and I would love to give this place a great review because the food was very yummy but, with service like that, I cannot bring myself to eat here again. read more

The cacio pepe is brought out in a wheel of cheese and then scooped onto a plate in front of you, which was unique but I was really hungry and would have appreciated it getting served more quickly or just being brought out on the plate. read more

We were very disappointed with our experience here. We've heard great things about the food and since we were running errands downtown we were very excited to finally get to try it. Since we were walking, we had our baby in a stroller. When we arrived we waited awhile before anyone approached us to seat us, although we got many looks from staff. We tried not to assume it was because of the baby, but when someone finally said they could seat us, he looked at the stroller and said "You're going to have to fold that." Well, since we couldn't "fold" our sleeping baby we decided to go somewhere else. Luckily, the restaurant across the street was much more welcoming. read more

We tried the Capricciosa, Romeo, and Tartufo - i can't pick a favorite because they were all Devine! Crust was crunchy yet light, just the right amount of salt! We also tried the appetizer of stuffed saffron rice. While tasty my husband liked it more than me. We also got two desserts. Wow. Just wow.
