    Not Ray's Pizza

What Not Ray's Pizza isn't - it is not fancy, hip, trendy or a hot spot. That's totally okay with me. Not Ray's Pizza is a Fort Greene institution, a Brooklyn pizza institution. It is the best place in the neighborhood for great, authentic, delicious pizza. It's not about going to someplace that is all hype. It's all about the pizza, really good pizza! It's the perfect slice or the perfect pie. The crust is just how I like it, thin and crispy. It isn't floating in sauce that takes over the pizza. The tomato sauce is just the right amount, with great flavor. It isn't dripping with oil. The amount of cheese is spot on and melts in your mouth. I haven't had a pizza or slice that has disappointed. The pepperoni is a favorite, you can't go wrong with a regular slice or a grandma slice. The service is always friendly, they are hard working and that's because they make great pizza. It's hot, right out of the oven and irresistible.

Half pepperoni, half black olive. Not bad

Not bad pizza. I ordered online, and it was ready in about 10 minutes, the time it took to walk there. The price online was $22 when I ordered. The fella I picked up from charged me $26, really just because he could. If you use a credit card, they add on some arbitrary charge to your bill, again, just because. Oh well!

We ordered half plain, half pepperoni and pineapple. This is what they sent us. How do you mess up an order this badly? They even called us, asking for clarification on the order. The receipt and item description were thoroughly inspected, and this is definitely not what we ordered.

3.5. It's good NY pizza. There was a good crisp to it and a lil chew which is the way I like it. Cooked well. Cheese and sauce weren't rich in taste but were good.

Descent spot for pizza. Has a nice toasty crust and cheesy. This is a good spot for Brooklyn style pizza. Reminds me of childhood and the service is friendly. $23 for half plain half pepperoni size large. The sausage pepperoni size large was about $29. Ambiance- fast pace with lots of people ordering. Very busy pizzeria and only a few seatings inside. Most people take their pizza to go and it's a really laid back spot to get pizza.

Had the pepperoni calzone. Must share with a friend. Very cheesy and such a small shop to eat at but worth it. Better than a food chain pizza. The pizza guys get you in and out!!

The food never disappoints! I grew up in the neighborhood but moved in 2004. To be able to return and the pizza is still great, wows me! Brought a friend with me and he co-signs this flavorful review. Service is excellent and it still has that good old Brooklyn pizza shop ambiance that I craved for.

    Plain and Stuffed Meat Slice

Surprisingly good. I was not expecting this pizza to be as good as it ended up being. I had heard good things about this pizza joint, but was very surprised at the whole experience. The pizza is served incredibly hot and takes a hard five minutes to cool down. I thought about asking for napkins and a fork and knife to eat this, but I manned up and persevered for a welcome final result. The plain slice has a very crispy crust; no chew whatsoever. The slice is so crispy that I was unable to fold it. But it has a nice flavor with the right amount of herbs and salt. The cheese and sauce make for a pleasant mouth feel so it did go down easily. It is a greasy slice, so take your time eating this slice. My specialty slice was a stuffed meat slice. It contains meatballs, sausage, and pepperoni. The pizza is so dense it could almost qualify as a Sicilian slice in triangle format. I was expecting it to be messy, cumbersome, and give my insides full fright. Sure, it is messy, it is cumbersome, but it tasted so fresh that my stomach was welcoming it with opens arms. That is until I got to the crust, where I reached my breaking point and had to surrender my crust to the trash bin, something so sinful for any pizza enthusiast to do. But overall I really liked this pizza. It was real busy, filled with hard working professionals, and you get a professional looking slice in return. I would say that is a pretty fair deal. What do you think?

Boy meets girl. Girl flirts with boy. Boy walks with girl and decides to fill her belly...with food. Pizza shop pops up. Not just a pizza shop. But "It's Not Rays." Girl gets 1 slice boy gets 2. Boy and girl decide to eat in a nearby car. At first sight the slice looks good. Girl takes one bite and then another. Boy asks girl "be honest, how is it?" Girl replies: 3.5/5 "nice thin crust needs a bit more saltiness, nice texture, good cheese pull, Good tomato taste With just the right amount of sauce. Boy wins another date with girl.

Arriving at 2 PM to stand in a line for two hours just to get on a list for a 7 PM seating doesn't make the place feel exclusive, it makes it feel like a punishment. But hey, we got a table, so the sacrifice was supposed to be worth it. It wasn't. Lucali is BYOB, which is fine in theory. My party brought two bottles of prosecco, fully prepared for a cozy, rustic evening. The server kindly offered to pop the first bottle, then brought out our glassware: heavy, standard water glasses, fresh out of the commercial dishwasher and literally piping hot. There is a special kind of absurdity in pouring crisp, ice-cold prosecco into a glass that feels like it was just pulled from the depths of hell. To top it off, nobody offered to keep our second bottle chilled. Minor detail, sure, but for a place with this level of cult status, the low-effort service immediately set the tone. To give credit where it's due, the ambiance is legitimately cool. It's dimly lit, atmospheric, and feels like step-back-in-time Brooklyn kitchen. Watching the pizza makers roll out dough using empty wine bottles before shoving them into the roaring brick oven gives off that warm, "Nonna's kitchen" charm. You want to love it. Then the food arrives, and the illusion shatters. Our server gave us the bare minimum rundown: "We have pizza, calzones, and tonight's special pasta." Zero detail, zero enthusiasm. We ordered the pizza and the calzone. The pizza was... fine. Completely fine. But calling this the best pizza in New York feels like collective mass delusion. If you've been to L'Industrie or Mama's Too, Lucali isn't even in the same stratosphere. Then came the calzone, which was allegedly stuffed with five cheeses. The server proudly named four, withholding the fifth as a "secret ingredient." A mystery cheese angle might be fun if the calzone blew your mind, but by the time I took a bite, the gimmick just felt tired. It was a perfectly average calzone wrapped in high-end gatekeeping. The grand finale, however, was the absolute kicker. Just under an hour into our meal, after overhearing the hostess realize she'd botched the table rotation, our server came over with an update: they had overbooked and needed our table. Her gracious solution? "You're welcome to pour the rest of your prosecco into your glasses and finish it outside!" The remaining, warm, prosecco that is... Let's recap the math: two hours waiting on a sidewalk at 2 PM, five hours of waiting for the reservation time, warm glasses for cold bubbles, middle-of-the-road pizza, and a boot out the door in under sixty minutes because they messed up their own seating chart. Disgraceful hospitality masked as old-school Brooklyn charm. If you love mediocre food, lukewarm prosecco in burning hot glassware, and being rushed out to the curb, Lucali is waiting for you. As for me, I won't be back.

I was greeted by an angel called Lisa, who was very much giving fairy Godmother of Luigi's pizza. I stumble through my order. I'm confused. I'm asking questions. The whole time Lisa is patient. She's sweet. She's funny. Makes me feel right at home. I asked for one slice of Knicks pizza but I wanted pepperoni on there. They said it didn't come with pepperoni, but the owner was sitting there like "you know what since you asked for it we'll do it for you." It's like I was heaven and was told Ask and you shall receive, we just want you to be happy! Now, I don't know what sort of crack cocaine they put in this Knicks pizza but it had vodka sauce and ricotta, hot honey olive oil and I think a pesto drizzle. Oh my Jesus Christ this was the best pizza I've ever had in my entire life. Savory, a lil sweet, saucy. Lisa was right, don't need ranch for this at all. Also loved the white pie. I'm so sad because I had to leave New York the next day but days later I am still thinking about this pizza. I am still thinking about sweet Lisa and just how warm and welcomed I was in the few minutes I spent in this restaurant. I'm still thinking about how delicious this slice was!!! I cannot recommend enough, 10 out of 10 you won't regret it. Tell Lisa the girl who asked for ranch and she responded "that's sacrilegious"sent you. I told Lisa I'd leave a good review and she said "we don't care about no reviews we care about getting you fed". Enough said!

I went in with extremely high expectations after seeing Barstool give it a 9.3, which is an incredibly high score. In my opinion, Dave Portnoy has a particular style of pizza that he prefers, and that definitely influences his ratings. Personally, I would not rate this pizza anywhere near a 9.3, especially considering how many great pizza options there are in Brooklyn. That being said, it is still a good slice and worth trying. I just don't think it quite lives up to the hype or the exceptionally high rating it has received.

Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. We ordered a glass of wine, a beer, an arugula salad, and our main food order. Everything started out fine, and the salad came without a problem. But then we waited. And waited. About 30 minutes after we had ordered, I asked our waiter where our food was. He apologized and admitted that he had forgotten to put the order in. By that point, we had already watched other tables receive their food, including people who had arrived well after us. We continued waiting, and after roughly 40 minutes or more, our food still had not arrived. At that point, the dining experience was already ruined and we decided to leave. Ironically, just as we were getting ready to go, the food finally started coming out. I told them we no longer wanted it. The waiter did apologize again and offered us a pizza to take with us, which I assume was complimentary, but by then we were simply ready to leave. Even paying the bill became unnecessarily drawn out. We were charged the full amount for the salad, beer, and wine. I sat with a $50 bill ready to pay, was handed the check, and then ended up standing around for another five minutes waiting for someone to actually take the money. There was no apology from the person handling the payment. I understand that mistakes happen, and I appreciated that our waiter admitted he had forgotten to place the order. But when a restaurant makes that kind of mistake, the recovery matters. After waiting that long, watching later-arriving customers get served, and then having difficulty simply paying and leaving, an apology and a pizza at the very end didn't really fix the experience. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I can't say the service lived up to the restaurant's reputation.
