This is a place to go if you are desperate or drunk or depressed. Or if you are a hungry hungry hippo, absolutely have to eat immediately, with no other options. I would think most eat here when hungover or high, because it is that type of food. Low quality meats. Highly processed white dough. Super greasy! Really salty! Service isn't great but it's not the fault of the server; it's just a crappy place. Could be nice with a little revamping because the building structure is neat. Overall, I hope they can make it better. I know about this business because I used to eat here hungover all the time. I would always get a individual sized pepperoni pizza. It was more like a Small/Medium pizza in size though. I guess it was for a very, very large individual. I always had leftovers. Also, once I took a homeless kid here. We had a nice chat. Tasted like it was made to order, good ratio of cheese to eggplant, eggplant was peeled, breadcrumbs didn't taste like the oil had been sitting for days before frying. Legit sauce. This is my neighborhood go-to pizza place, and I've been a regular for at least 15 years. I usually order for delivery - free and fast delivery. Great pizzas, from thin to thick crust, and every topping imaginable. Great quality pizza. If you're a meat lover, I HIGHLY recommend the Coit Tower special - pepperoni, salami, sausage, and mushrooms. Yum! They also offer a selection of pastas, which are ok, as well as hot/cold subs, salads, soup, and entrees (chicken parm, ribs, etc). Pizza is really the star, though. For dining in - it has a cute, local pizzeria vibe, with red and white tablecloths and booth seating. There's usually football or baseball on their TVs. If you're a wheelchair user, don't worry about the booth seating - several of the booths are removable so that you can pull right up to the table with no hassle. read more

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what happened to the Bay Area Mr. Pizza Man empire, but I'm bringing this up because I think you should know that the Berkeley North Beach Pizza probably isn't on the best terms with the San Francisco North Beach Pizzas. And you should also know that the Haight-Ashbury North Beach Pizza isn't as good as the original North Beach Pizza in . . . in . . . you guessed it, North Beach. When doing Yelp research a year ago, I found it strange that the SF North Beaches didn't seem to acknowledge their East Bay cousin's existence. And then I thought about Mr. Pizza Man and Lamppost Pizza, and I got it. I know you don't care about any of this, so here goes: Berkeley's North Beach Pizza is all right. I was on the way to work a swingshift and was craving something new. I called a to go order and everything went fine and food was promised on time. Upon arrival at the restaurant I noticed how dead it was on a Thursday night (not a very good sign). There was only one other party there at 7:30pm. The employees weren't too friendly. Don't go here, even if you got stuck in a 90-minute traffic jam and are running late to the Berkeley Rep and missed your reservations at Downtown by an hour and need food fast. There's a North Beach Pizza in San Mateo. I've never eaten there. Generally I don't eat much pizza and generally I avoid chains. But after a full day hanging out with my bro's kids I thought to give them a nice treat. I gave my nephew my iPhone and told him to use the Yelp app and find a pizza place. Basically I said, if you heard of the place then we're not going there: I.e., no Dominos, no Round Table, and hell no Little Caesars. Finally we stopped here because the kids were starving. The waitresses were very friendly with pretty smiles. We ordered pizza with pepperoni and garlic. My nephew proclaimed this the best pizza he ever had. The crust was second only to Domino's new garlic crust. WTH? Well I never tried the Domino's new crust, but how good can it be? The ingredients were good quality... nice chewy cheese and just the right amount of sauce. The pepperoni wasn't too spicy for the kids. The crust was nicely chewy, maybe 3.5 stars. The boy gave this place 5 stars, the girl 4.5 stars. I'll give it a solid 4 stars. A nice place, good ambiance, and pleasant service... all in all a nice place to bring family for pizza. read more

HAHAHA! North Beach's pizza looks funny!! XD Looks exactly like frozen microwaveable pizza you get at the supermarket. The crust is nice and crispy, but I cannot call this quality pizza. I was so looking forward to eating here, but the pizza is just... disappointing. It doesn't look like good food. More like little children's food. X) There's way too much cheese (gasp! I can't believe I said that!). I've been in Berkeley 9 years and never got around to trying this place, but despite the tacky decor my boyfriend talked me into it...Alas, the meatball sub was one of the grossest-looking (gray, soggy) and grossest-tasting things I've ever experienced - managed to pick thorough about 1/3 of the sad thing. I also echo the sentiments of fellow Yelpers that North Beach Pizza has surprisingly low reviews! We have been here a few times and ordered take-out, and each time we've munched on some good, hearty pizza. We love the North Beach special - it's basically a combo, and they're pretty generous with the toppings, which is a lot better than some of the other cheapo places some reviewers have mentioned. Also good is the Golden Gate special! Since these 2 are our favorites, we like to get half and half. Another plus is North Beach always has coupons that you can apply for discounts or free drinks, etc. Granted, the pizza isn't cheap, but it's a reasonable price for what you get. Yes, the decor isn't swanky or anything, but lots of buildings in Berkeley are old and it doesn't affect the taste of food. All in all, this is a nice pizza joint where the servers aren't bothering you every 2 minutes so you can relax, enjoy your meal and your company. read more

Their thin crust pizza is the best. We've eaten here many times and they never bat an eye when my husband and I order two pizzas with the same toppings only mine is thin crust with easy sauce and his normal. They are not high-brow so don't expect an extensive wine list. However, they are one of the few pizza joints who also have fantastic salads sized for two. Was pleasantly surprised by a decent (for this region of the country) chicken parm sub/sandwich from here yesterday. I've only had it once and haven't tried the pizza so this is just a review for the one time chicken parm experience. Sure, it came on what seemed more like a Dutch Crunch roll, but it was toasted just the right amount- fresh in the middle and crisp on the outside. The chicken was breaded as all true chicken parm cutlets in a sub should be, and there was alot of it (2 layers) so that the bread roll to chicken ratio was a good one. The marinara sauce was fine- not as delicious as my old housemate from Italy used to make but maybe not Prego or Ragu either. Good amount of melted parmesan cheese. The price is right and it even comes with a tiny little side of romaine and a couple of tomato slices, pepperoncini's and vinaigrette type dressing. Dressing was a little too sugary for my taste but I did appreciate some fresh veggies to round out my warm meal. It didn't match what you get at the pizza and deli joints in the northeast where I grew up, but considering all my attempts at finding something close to it in the greater oakland/berkeley area this is one of the closest in satisfaction if you're not too picky. I'll order it again when my next craving for chicken parm hits. Crossing my fingers the decency of this one is consistent. read more

North Beach Pizza is the best pizza house in the entire East Bay, and at least Berkeley. This is simply because they have the most delicious pizza. Every time I have extra money, I order the extra large pizza with at least 5 toppings and munch down on it for several days. I had never been here before "ending up here on a whim". I'm glad I had not read the reviews prior to pulling in because we would not have stopped here and we actually had a really good pizza. I had spent the day in SF with my twins and after promising to take them to China Town for lunch and ending up lost (I'm pathetic) for over an hour in the rain I said screw it and headed for the bridge. Hungry. I pull over in Berkeley because as I tell my girls "I used to hang out in Berkeley all the time I know my way around here!" Not sure where to go for lunch and feeling extremely frustrated at my lack of direction we decide on pizza. OK - I will admit the service here is slow as can be so don't go if you have anywhere at all to be later in the day. We seated ourselves and wasnt sure if they knew we were there due to the amount of time it took to have them A) bring us a menu and B) come back and take our order. All said and done and probably 40 minutes later we were served our pizza. The toppings were generous and yummy! My girls and I kept commenting on how good the pizza was. I'm glad we waited because it crossed my mind to walk out due to the slow service. The thing that kept me sitting was the amount of patrons dining inside. I kept thinking "well, it must be good". The pizza did not disappoint. To keep the pace moving I sent my girls up for a to go box and I paid in cash. It would have been a much lengthier visit had we not done those two things. I don't mind so much if someone doesn't like the place as much as I do, but some of the statements and comparisons just plain don't make sense. @Jen M. - You think this place looks "chain-ish" ? Let's compare to popular chain pizza places... Pizza Hut? No, NBP isn't remotely like that. Round Table? Nope. Dominoes? Little Ceasar's? Straw Hat? Nope, not even close. Chuck E. Cheese? Please. @Mo L. - Most of NBP's pizzas have tomato sauce, except for a few speciality pizzas which have some other kind of sauce. Next time pay more attention to the menu, which very clearly specifies which pizzas come with Garlic Sauce, Alfredo Sauce, or something like that. @Bonnie L. - Dunno where you ate, but it wasn't NBP. TLDR Version: It took over *two hours* to get my food. Long version: After coming back from vacation, not having a full-fridge nor a car to go to the grocery store, I was eagerly looking forward to ordering a pizza! Now, I used the NBP online ordering service, which is hosted through a 3rd party site, as you cannot do it directly for the Berkeley location. My arrival time was quoted at 45-60 minutes, which is what I expected. What I did not expect was that, after checking my order status and calling support to get an update on my food, was that it would take two hours. Nor was the bill that was presented to me accurate of what my actual receipt was (I was given a discount from the online service for the inconvenience). As for the pizza itself: half of the toppings fell off of the crust because of oil, and the half of the garlic bread wasn't even baked. No matter how hungry I will be after going on vacation, I do not think I will be going back here. read more

While the Chicken in the Chicken Parmesan was cooked correctly - breaded and lightly fried which just enough crisp - everything else about this place was really disappointing. Everything that comes with the Chicken Parm is incredibly sub-par: from the watery sauce on the spaghetti to the soggy vegetables that also came on the side. I should have learned from the above takeout and stuck to takeout pizza but I gave the on-site dining experience a try instead. There were gnats hovering over our food the entire time, the fried calamari didn't come with anything to dip into (when traditionally there hold be some marinara or something) and our waitress was confused the whole time regarding our check: the concept of the groupon was lost on her. Berkeley is a tough pizza market! With stapes like Fat Slice, Blondies, West Coast and of course Zachary's (to name just a few), there is certainly a lot to live up to. North Beach Pizza is one of those places that I've driven by about a million times. You can't miss it - that big, freestanding, house-like building with the slanted roof right there on University. Thanks to an awesome 50% off deal through Living Social, I finally had a good excuse to come in and give it a try. I'm happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised! What I liked best about North Beach Pizza is that they have their own thing going, which is really the only way to separate yourself from the competition (especially in a city like Berkeley where you can't throw a stone without hitting a restaurant). Despite a somewhat misleading name, they actually have a large menu of Italian food, not just pizza. While most of it sounded good, I ended up going with pizza anyways. In a world of specialized pizzas (New York Style, Chicago Style, Wood-fired, etc.), it was actually refreshing to have just a normal, good quality pizza. The crust was nice, thick, and just the right amount of buttery on the end. The cheese was gooey and plentiful, and the sauce and veggies were perfectly sweet and fresh. We couldn't pass up a slice of Tiramisu for dessert, which was also quite delicious. Well done, North Beach Pizza! All in all, I would definitely recommend this place is my top 5 pizza joints in Berkeley, especially if you're looking for dine-in pizza rather than take-out. North Beach Pizza. Hmm. I wouldn't recommend this place for Pizza. I've had a slice or two on weekend nights when I'm desperate for food. The slices had clearly been out for several hours, and I didn't get anything besides reheated-cheese flavor. On the flip side, I did enjoy a dinner here recently with my girlfriend. I ordered the eggplant parm entree, and both the parm and the accompanying vegetables were great. Nothing special in terms of preparation or seasoning, just good home-cooked food. The beer list also looked very good (definitely above-average for a place on University Ave). I'll be back here, probably on a rainy day when I'm craving Italian and don't want to walk very far. read more
