Spicy meatball pizza
Lanay G.

I have to admit, I was skeptical when I first heard that pizza was "a thing" in New Haven. I had never heard of New Haven style pizza, and certainly didn't expect it to wow me. And now here I am asking all my friends "Did you know New Haven has some of the best pizza?!" I ordered via Uber Eats with delivery to my hotel. They messed up the delivery, so unfortunately the pizza wasn't piping hot once I finally found it. However, it didn't need to be. The flavor was a masterpiece! It was spicy, with just the right amount of cheese and sauce. The sauce was not the tangy cheap-tasting sauce that I sometimes stumble upon so I was happy about that. The crust was not hard, but not soft. I was pleasantly surprised that it had so much flavor, yet was not at all greasy. I wish I knew how to describe it better, but I guess you'll have to try it for yourself! ;)

I was looking for a place to go with my two sons (7 and 5) and my wife that we A. had not been before and B. Looked either interesting or tasty... or both. We decided to try next door. The night we went it was rainy. It was not a really big deal because the parking is very manageable - especially considering it's New Haven. We ordered some pizza, chicken wings and dessert. The food was AMAZING. Super fresh, very tasty and presentation was perfect. We literally ate everything. The only thing I snapped a photo of was my dessert. The wait staff were very kind. They provided my boys crayons and stuff to keep them busy. They always smiled and were very attentive. The Resturaunt itself was spacious, beautiful and clean. I got the impression that everyone that was working there, was happy to be there. And we were too!! 9.1/10

So the ambiance is fantastic with comfortable seating and a relaxed vibe. The service is top notch. Our server was very friendly and the food came out super fast. My espresso martini was incredible. (No Bailey's just as I like it.) The Caesar salad was absolutely delicious and a delightful surprise. As far as the pizza goes, I need to preface this with the fact that I am a complete pizza snob. The reason we ended up here tonight was because Modern Apizza was mobbed and I wasn't waiting an hour with a toddler in tow. (For the record I would have totally waited an hour sans toddler.) Anyway - the cheese pie has potential. The cheese and sauce are great but I can't get over the flop. The crust was a huge let down. With that said - I couldn't see their oven so maybe that's the difference. You see char so you think there will be crunch - but no such luck. The clams casino was just meh and I am very confused about the bell peppers. They were an unwelcomed surprise. So all in all, the highs were high, but the pizza was a letdown. Again - great vibe and service. I would totally go back for drinks and salads!

Honestly crushed! Found out they were closing 2 weeks ago and we came last weekend and dined in and came for take out just now and on both occasions, complete debacle! Dine in experience the service at the bar from Jose was probably one of the worst experiences ever and the food matched it as the pies were undercooked and we never had the chance to say anything as Jose couldn't understand hand signals or stares of help! Our pick up experience their last weekend was even more so disappointing. 2/3 pies were dry and the third pie was undercooked. Called them to let them know immediately and the girl who picked up with a slight accent never apologized nor did she even let us speak to manager or offer to even remake the one pie I really complained about which was the New Haven Pie. Sadly they are leaving a bad taste in my mouth and wish I had never gone back so as not to tarnish the positive experience that we had a few years back-nothing near what I remembered!

Excellent neighborhood pizza joint with a separate smallish bar area that gets busy when university is in session. We appreciate that Dining room tables aren't on top of one another here. We also appreciate that Next Door has more than just quality pizza, in fact their apps & salads are fresh & interesting & are at a nice portion size for sharing. All of the pies made here have a wonderful chewy crust & great sauce. Next Door also makes a reasonably priced & tasty New Haven style clam pie for folks not wanting to shell out 30 bucks or more as Zu ¶¶ard!s charges, the difference being that with Z's pie you are getting fresh shucked clams at market prices & Next Door uses canned. Service is excellent & very efficient. Go for the homemade molasses cookies afterwards. PS: good parking in their own lot.

While this was not my first time here I was lucky enough to have a mother daughter date at Next Door this past week. The Rossi Rita (Next Door's take on a strawberry margarita) hit the spot! My mom couldn't get over how this restaurant was so empty and served just as good pizza as the restaurants on Wooster street. We were immediately able to grab a parking space and once inside were able to select a table of our choosing. No need to wait outside! Food was served promptly and fresh. Do not sleep on this hidden gem!

Unfortunately, the food was SO RIDICULOUSLY DELICIOUS this is all we have to show for the Clams Casino and Garlic Knots.

We drove all the way from Durham NC for some New Haven pizza and Next Door did not disappoint!!!! You MUST order the garlic knots. Swimming in garlic...these are gooey-stretchy yeasty delights. The Clams Casino pizza was packed with flavor. Claudia and Doug were super friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back!!! Oh and the ambiance is super cute.

Next Door is so much more then a pizza restaurant. We went there to try their great New Haven style thin crust pizza. We ordered a half mushroom, half sausage, mozz pizza. It was absolutely delicious, and perfectly cooked. But they also serve great appetizers, soups, stews, entrées, and sandwiches. They also make all their desserts on the premises. They even make their own ice cream. We ordered the strawberry shortcake made with their homemade biscuit.OMG it was so good. Our server was excellent, and the staff is very friendly. They also have a bar with seating, and a private party room.

Just tried Next Door for the first time this month and it was so good! New Haven Style Apizza was on point - we had the Mashed Potato and the Fresh Mozzarella. The crust and toppings were all perfect. They also have gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options. We tried the Penne Alla Vodka, which was delicious. The sauce was great, and excellent portion size. For a starter we had the Housemade Meatballs, which were very good. If you're a salad lover or want a side with your pizza the Winter Berry Salad was a great choice. If you saved room for dessert go for the Ice Cream Sammie, you won't be disappointed! Definitely make sure to check this place out. Staff is excellent, very friendly and accommodating. There's a small parking lot onsite and plenty of street parking. Also, spacious seating inside.

Half chicken barbecue and half cheese pizza

So my friend and I came here for dinner and ordered half a barbecue chicken and half cheese. The pizza was floppy but good. If I rate it 7.3 only one slice, my fingers got dirty from the crust, and it was oily in the cheese

I got mash potato pie and it was SO GOOD!! I highly recommend it. The toppings were perfectly balanced with its dough, it's so savory and fluffy!

This was my first time here and as a pizza lover I had to try it out. The restaurant is cozy with a great bar area. Since it was my first time here, I wanted to try just a small half plain and bacon pizza. When it's my first time trying a new pizza place, I always get plain pizza because if you can't make plain pizza good then it's not good pizza. Also, when I try a new pizza place, I want to taste the flavors and if the pizza is good, then I'll go back and try different toppings. The pizza was very good and had great flavor. The dough was great and the customer was awesome. I would definitely be back again. As you can see, I ate the whole pizza. It was delicious.

New Haven Pizza Plain

Saturday night in New Haven. I want really good pizza without hassle I come here. I drive by people standing out in rain in line for Modern. Meanwhile I order online here 15 min later drive up and grab some perfection. This pizza is seasoned perfectly. The garlic is all over it. Popping with flavor. tomato sauce, pecorino romano, evoo, oregano & fresh garlic are the ingredients. Nothing more needed for this slice of heaven.

It had eight small pieces which was fine with me. The pizza was fresh and just came from the oven. It was just pretty good. It didn't have much flavor, even after putting oregano on it. We had the ricotta and honey on toast, meatballs, prosciutto/mozzarella to start, some white wine and of course PIZZA! The pizza was light and cooked perfectly. We had the Dolce Salato and the Diavolina. We loved the Dolce Salato! The Diavolina was good, but I think some more spicy salami or maybe an additional spicy component would have been a good addition to the pizza. It needed just a little bit more on the flavor side. But still everything here is high quality and I would recommend! Service was excellent. We were immediately seated and had the option to sit inside or outside. I first sat inside, then we moved to a larger table outside. What I really appreciated as a new mom, was their openness and flexibility for coming in with a stroller. I was nervous to be a burden to the restaurant, but they were super accommodating. Thank you On room for improvement, I think on a hot day, having the inside space being much much cooler, than the outdoor seating (especially for newborns/really young kids/elderly) would be beneficial. Yesterday it was cool inside to start (and remember I chose to move outside), but they started to leave the front door open to allow for easy movement of staff and guests between inside and outside, which made the indoor space get warmer over time. And I totally get that for the ease of movement for staff/guests, but maybe consider keeping it super cool on the inside, so that kiddos/elderly have a cool space on a really hot day to not overheat. The vibe here is great. Chill, warm and light! Come with family and/or friends and enjoy!

What it's referring to is New Haven, and in particular the prominent restaurants that originate its local style of pizza. Modern is the third of a trinity of well-known pizzas, and unlike the others it has not expanded outside of New Haven and is not on the same Italian-heavy street. I was fooled by the name into thinking that it was going to be "modern" pizza with pineapple and edamame or something, but it is actually just as traditional as the others. There is a small vestibule on entry, where you are apparently supposed to wait and get your name taken for a table. I was a bit nervous that there were several groups ahead of me, but it was not a long wait for me, maybe ten or fifteen minutes on a weeknight. It's a fast-cooking pizza and a decent-sized restaurant, so in the entirely likely event of a line, it does move quickly. The menu is focused, with the pizza accompanied by beverages and a couple of salads and bread-based appetizers. Figuring I won't be back in the area for a while, I just went ahead and got a salad and garlic bread that I knew I wouldn't finish; I was offered a massive side of marinara sauce with my bread. I also got a white birch soda in the distinctive local brand to complete the experience, and it was a strong birch bark taste. The pizza crust felt a little chewy to me at first, but it grew on me. The ample char and my wise topping choice of cherry peppers delivered a complex mix of flavors that transcended simple description. It was perhaps my favorite of the big players (I've tried some satellite Frank Pepe's locations but haven't been to the original). And the price and the atmosphere are accessible even for people who aren't Ivy Leaguers. Maybe the Connecticut sign isn't an overreach.

Having already tried Frank Pepe's up the street, this was stop number two on my quest through New Haven's legendary "Big Three." We arrived around 8:00 PM on a Wednesday evening on our drive back to RI from Pennsylvania, hoping the line wouldn't be too bad, knowing they closed at 9:00 PM. Luckily, there were only about a dozen people ahead of us, and we were seated by 8:30 PM. The place only has about 15 to 20 tables inside, but they do a fantastic job turning them over, and the host was super friendly and professional right from the start. The dining room has that perfect old-school feel - clean, warm, and completely inviting. Our server, Jessica V., was exceptional. Even though it was the end of what was likely a long shift, she was cheerful, super friendly, and attentive. My partner, feeling dehydrated after our long drive, requested a pitcher of water, and Jessica was happy to bring one out to her. We ordered a Large Mozzarella & Tomato Sauce Pie, and it was as close to pizza perfection as you can get. You could tell right away that they use top-quality ingredients. The vibrant sauce and mozzarella balanced each other out beautifully on a nicely charred, coal-fired crust. We completely devoured the entire thing, and it easily earned a spot in the top three pizzas I've ever had in my life. To go with the pie, I had a Two Roads "Two Juicy Zero" non-alcoholic beer, which was super refreshing and ideal since we still had a two-hour drive ahead of us. In my humble opinion, I give a very slight edge to Sally's over Pepe's, though I'd probably need to try them side by side to make a final call. All in all, it was a fantastic experience, and we loved every minute of it. A huge thank you to Jessica and the Sally's team! We will definitely be back the next time we're passing through!

We arrived on a Monday around peak dinner time, but there was essentially no wait (apparently uncommon according to my friend -- just a delightful consequence of dining at a college town during the summer). We split a medium pizza (1/2 elote mexican street corn and 1/2 bbq brisket), proving to be more than enough for two plus a more than ample amount of leftovers. Recently, I've gravitated toward thinner pizzas, a far cry from the typical Detroit (foccacia-esque) style pizzas I used to prefer, and BAR's pizza is akin to a flatbread yet very thin, another fallen angel to the GLP's. The undercarriage boasts a brilliant crust, almost cracker-like. However, it should be noted that the pizza is indulgent all the same. The elote pizza is quite possibly the most memorable, unique pizza I've ever had; it arrives almost crimson-red with a generous layer of corn and takis atop. It's still incredibly well balanced despite the hodgepodge of varied toppings. It's hard to pick a favorite between this and the bbq brisket though; while one is incredibly unique the other is simply sumptuous, nothing pedestrian about either of the two. The service is also impeccable, almost rivaling that of southern hospitality. I always thought Californians were friendly but something is in the air every time I visit New Haven. Incredible!

BAR is an interesting restaurant: open air, picnic tables, open space, paper plates, no utensils unless you ask for them, etc. We were greeted right away by a less than friendly waiter who seemed peeved we didn't have a drink to order right away. Strike one. After a few minutes, everyone put their drink order in and I asked if the bartender could make me a mojito since it wasn't on the menu. The waiter said yes, so I waited. Then came the mojito. It was the worst "mojito" I've tasted in my life. I'm not one to send a drink back because of an "I don't taste any alcohol" excuse, but this was BAD. It tasted like margarita mix with lime and mint sprigs thrown in. It was absolutely terrible. When I double checked with the waiter if the drink was an original mojito he simply said yes, not "is something wrong with the drink?" or "would you like to send it back?" The drink was so bad I told him I couldn't drink it. He was peeved again. Strike two. I asked for a soft drink instead and the soda was flat (strike 3), but at this point I just needed something to drink... because who wants to have water with their pizza? Then came the time to make a dinner choice. My mission was to try the mashed potato pizza. It was hands down AMAZING!! Mashed potatoes and bacon on a pizza. Yes, please!! This was the only saving grace from my experience. I would return to BAR again if only for that pizza! Two of my friends had the clam pizza and the pepperoni/mushroom. Both enjoyed their own! Warming: New Haven pizza is thin crust. I got two meals out of a small, so if you visit with a group, consider ordering a few small pizzas so you can taste a few. I would've given BAR 4 or 5 stars, but the unpleasant waiter, the "mojito," and the flat sofa made for a trifecta, so I'm giving my visit 3 stars. If I find myself in New Haven again, I'll be back! Hopefully my next update will be 5 stars!

Kwok and Nguyen's latest venture opened at the Connecticut Post Mall in a restaurant space that was previously home to Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar, which specialized in tavern-style pizzas cooked in a cast-iron skillet. 8 Thousand Pizza offers this same style of pizza, but what sets them apart from the previous pizzeria is that they also offer self-pouring technology, which became legalized in Connecticut in 2021. The food menu features two dozen tavern-style pizzas as well as burgers, wings, fries, salads and soups. Through the use of a supplied electronic bracelet, customers can self-pour their own beverage from a selection of 28 craft beer taps and 6 wine taps. There's a two-pint or 32-ounce limit for the self-pours. I recently visited 8 Thousand Pizza for dinner. I had previously visited the space when it was Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar and was sad to hear that they moved. However, this new business concept of a tavern-style pizzeria with self-pouring taps sounded very interesting to me. This was actually my first visit to a self-pouring taproom, as these types of establishments only just began opening in the state in the last few years. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the "Grandma's Tomato Pizza" (fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, roasted garlic, tomatoes and EVOO) and the "Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza" (tomato sauce, pepperoni, hot honey sauce and mozzarella cheese). The latter happens to be 8 Thousand's signature pizza. Both pizzas had crust so thin that it's almost cracker like; they didn't flop at all. They were super crispy with excellent sauce and toppings. I honestly can't decide which one I liked better; they were both very good. During my visit, I enjoyed some self-pours of Grey Sail Brewing's "Captain's Daughter" (Double New England IPA) and New Park Brewing's "Cloudscape" (American IPA). Delicious pizza with craft beer is always an excellent pairing! I had a really nice experience at 8 Thousand Pizza and I hope to return with my family.

Service was nice and attentive. But you have to go up to the counter to order. Many of the betas were out or empty. I did like that. They had a wide selection of glasses available for the different styles of beer.

We've gotten everything from specials to a plain here and it all slaps. Joe is also a super friendly guy. Located in Old Heidelberg as a plus (only on weekends, check their IG for latest schedule), with some good cocktails and a solid dingy vintage basement bar vibe.

Now let me tell you...THE SAUCE. I dream about it. It's enough where one night my husband and I craved pizza and I said we had to drive to New Haven to see Joe and crush a pepperoni pizza. If they have the tomato pie? GET IT. The rare Kale white pie? A vegetarian's dream. Keep an eye on the Instagram for which pizzas are coming out and how many. I came in a different night after going out in New Haven with a group and we snagged the last pizza at about 9:30pm, only 2 hours after they began service. Joe is also just fantastic. He's friendly, a caring dad (the pizza is named after his three sons, and why you see three basils on each pizza), and he does this after he perfected the recipe during Covid and is now sharing it with the world. Crisp pepperonis (how I like them), addicting sauce, unique flavor combos, go see Joe. He knows what he's doing. Maybe a good thing I have to drive 45 min for this pizza because I'd otherwise be here every weekend. Definitely a pizza worth checking out!
