Growing up on Long Island in the 70s and early 80s, every pizza place had a certain look, smell, and feel and walking into Zuppardi's immediately took me back. The atmosphere alone felt like stepping into a time capsule in the best possible way. Locals, no frills, coal oven heat, and that unmistakable old-school vibe. We ordered a large plain tomato pie, a large mozzarella with their house-made fennel sausage, a small buffalo chicken, and a small salad pizza with chicken. The tomato pie came out first, and as someone who had never had one before, I made a couple rookie mistakes. I grabbed a slice (love how the slice sizes are beautifully irregular), and without mozzarella to hold everything together, the hot sauce started sliding. Burned my hand. Took a quick bite. Burned the roof of my mouth. Worth it. That tomato pie absolutely stole the show. The crust had that perfect coal-fired char and chew that I remember from childhood, something that's hard to find now. The texture and depth of flavor were incredible. I honestly didn't miss the mozzarella at all and left wondering if it was ever necessary in the first place. The house-made fennel sausage was outstanding, you can taste that it's not commercial. The buffalo chicken was good and not overly spicy. I didn't try much of the salad pie, but everything that hit the table had that signature char and structure that makes New Haven apizza special. No garlic powder on the table (very New Haven), just red pepper flakes and confidence in the product. I regret not asking about adding fresh garlic before it went into the oven,,,,,, lesson learned for next time. Parking lot plus street parking makes it an easy stop off I-95, which was perfect for us on a road trip. Friendly staff, full of locals, and zero touristy feel. Coming from New York where there's "good pizza everywhere" but very little that truly stands out anymore, this felt different. Not just good, memorable. Nostalgic. Textural. Distinct. Stopped by Zuppardi's Apizza for the first time and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We came specifically for the fresh shucked clam pie (market price) and the Zuppardi Special with mushroom and sausage, plus a small Caesar salad for me. The pizza had that perfect crispy bottom and great flavor all around. Everything was delicious. A highlight for me was my son eating his first entire slice of pizza -- not just the crust -- which says a lot. Wow! New Haven pizza is some of the best in the United States and honestly I was blown away by Zuppardi's. They completely nailed the sauce, cheese, dough, etc. We normally go to two different places when stopping through and this beats out our regular spot by a mile. I'm a huge fan of CT pizza, and have been to Pepe, Modern, Sallys and now Zuppadri's. Zuppardi's, while solid, is my least favorite so far. Tried to sausage, which was recommended by a friend. It was fine. The crust was a little thicker than I would have liked. Sausage was good, but overall, the pizza just taste a little ordinary. Maybe I should have ordered a cheese instead. Zuppardi's is part of the best Apizza in New Haven conversation. For me, it's definitely good pizza, but lacks some of the character of my personal favorite. Part of my being slightly unimpressed could come from the overall experience of getting inside. My husband went to put our name in for a table and asked if there happened to be any accessible parking that we didn't see in the lot that they have. The host didn't even know what that meant. So just to confirm, in their decently sized parking lot there is not a single accessible space, and I'm not sure how that's legal. Based on the number of mobility aids present that night, half the parking lot should be handicapped parking. Oh, and nothing brings out the worst in people like a busy parking lot. A spot was opening up as we were looking for a place to park which we thought was fortunate so I wouldn't have to hobble so far. Well, a woman blocked the space with her body so one of her friends could park his absurdly large pickup truck there instead of us. Hey, if you ever read this, you're a crummy person and should feel bad about yourself :) Anyway, onto the pizza. We ordered a Margerita and a buffalo chicken. I really hoped to try the special but I was overruled haha. The crust is tasty and shatteringly crisp, no flop here. For me personally though, I like a crust with some variety in texture so it lacked some character for me. The red sauce was very good but needed a little salt. The cheese on the table did remedy that. On the other hand, I found the buffalo chicken pizza way too salty. The other members of my party really enjoyed it though, so to each their own. It was loaded with chicken that was very tender, and because the crust is so sturdy it held up well. Service was also subpar. Our waitress was friendly, but slow. I'm not surprised given that there were only 2 waiters for the whole restaurant. Definitely make sure you order pitchers to drink. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back unless I was in New Haven reeeeaally wanting pizza and everyone else was too busy. Came here on a Friday evening to dine in. I got lucky and was able to have the last table that was free otherwise you will have to wait. The line that usually is out by the door when you walk in is the to-go/pick up line. Parking is filled up so I had to do some street parking down the street which isn't too bad after stuffing yourself with pizza. Got a large house special and a small clam pizza (market price on the menu, $25 the day I got it). I can say I really loved their clam pie, it had a good ratio of clams, oilness, and crisp to it without it being heavy or drenched in oil. The house special was good, some of it was consistent and some were more floppy with usually those being more loaded with the toppings. Honestly, I was a really big fan of the crisp the pies had to offer and the great distribution of that New Haven-style oven charr but not to the point where it tastes burnt. I would rank Zuppardi's higher than Pepe but I still enjoyed modern and Sally's slightly better. Really great New Haven style pizza, including the best clam pizza (apizza) I've ever had (which honestly isn't saying much since I've only had 3 different ones). I tend to plan our vacation trips down to particular restaurants, so knew I had a chance to try two apizza places while we were near New Haven during our first full day before we headed to New York State. We had tried the OG apizza place the night before in New Haven, and was planning to hit its main competitor for lunch this day, close by. But reading online, Zuppardi's was recommended especially for their clam pie...so I audibled. We went to West Haven instead, found street parking nearby, and was the third group in line when they opened at 11 am. The first two were doing carryout, so we were the first seated. The dining area consists of a large party room in the back, and tables/booths in the front near the kitchen, where we sat. It's a two sided menu with classics. We were here for pizza, with the smallest size being 12". I had come for the clam pizza (market price, small being $26.25 this day). Since my wife won't eat it, we also got a small sausage ($13.50), knowing that we weren't going to be able to finish it. They had a moving draft menu on their video screen, and I picked up a pint of a Kolsch (one of my favorites) called OEC Kolsch Americana...there is something great about eating pizza with a cold beer. The pizzas were delivered as soon as they were ready (about 20 minutes). We had tried the similar topping pizzas the night before at New Haven. My wife said this sausage apizza version was better, with a more flavorful sausage (had a bit of fennel, though not as much as we like it in a Chicago style fennel-forward sausage pizza), a better tasting crust...and it cost a bit less. Now my pizza cost quite a bit more than the OG version we had previously, but one could really taste the difference of the fresh clams (which had been shucked onsite this morning). I had also asked for mozzarella as well, which I think is the way to go (the pure version only has Pecorino Romano as the cheese). I thought the crust was really good...thin and crispy with quite a bit of charring, but not bitter. The littleneck clams were plentiful and served whole, and cooked just enough to preserve the brininess. Eating it hot meant the crust was still stiff enough to hold the toppings with a crackle after every bite, and the garlic sauce was pungent enough to remind you of what you were eating without covering up the taste of the fresh clams (which a tomato based sauce would have). I also tasted some of the clams individually...it reminded me somewhat of eating fresh clams cooked over an open flame grill just enough for it to open, but still have plenty of the briny 'taste of the sea' liquid...this was a bit safer, not having to scald yourself on the hot shell. We ended up bringing back half of each back to the hotels. It wasn't close to being the same when we tried eating it the next day. Yeah...I really enjoyed the apizza here, and would be a recommended place to bring friends, just to let them taste what the best clam apizza should taste like. read more

Our service was good and the sausage is AMAZING!!! I mean, they did seem to want us out soon after closing but I can't be mad at that, it's not a bar and they wanna clean and go. They do have a small variety of beer and wine. We tried 4 pies and I preferred the red sauces pies for sure, but that's typical for me. The bacon could've been crispier (see pic) on the shrimp pie, but we crisped it up the next day at home when we finished it. Many have said this is in the top (5 maybe) of CT pizza, and judging by the sausage or mushroom and sausage pie alone, it's quite possible! Another apizza place tried in the New Haven area! I've heard from many CT locals that this is THE spot to try, better than all other apizza places! My friend and I came here on a Tuesday evening and it was pretty busy! Luckily we didn't have to wait for a table, but mostly all the tables were full. We decided to get the classic half plain half mozz. As well as half sausage, pepper, onion & margarita. Our personal favorite was the sausage, pepper, onion and classic mozz. To be honest, it wasn't super spectacular. Pretty mid level pizza. It also wasn't giving apizza style, just normal wood oven pizza. The margarita one also tasted very watery. Good sauce though! However, not enough tang or sweetness that I would like. I personally would not come here again just because there are better apizza places I've tried. Not sure if it's then at pizza I have ever had. But it's definitely tied for top spot. When in around 3pm seated after just 5 minutes waitress came over almost instantly. Left menus and returned pretty quick when she saw us put the menus down. Order a cheese and a pepperoni. And when I tell you it was fast it was 8 minutes from order to the pizzas hitting the table. He was from Naples, Italy. He was very informative about what was good on the menu. The ambiance was like Barcelona, Italy, or Naples, Italy. We ordered two personal pizzas. We met up with friends here on a Saturday night at 7 p.m. The place was packed. It was approximately a 20 min wait to be seated and another 5 to 10 mins to get orders in. We were seated in the back dining room area. No frills, local, old school pizza joint. Pizzas came out relatively quickly and we all enjoyed our chosen pizzas. We also ordered the table sized gorgonzola salad which got a thumbs up. Our server was friendly and efficient. Casual vibe, great pizza and service. We do all love Zuppardi's, but each has his or her own ranking and it is definitely in the running for best pizza so be sure to check it out! Restroom clean. Took a break from Yelp but now I am back :) Went here on 3:00PM on a Saturday. Perfect timing!! Small wait, but nothing crazy. They offer dining, but there aren't a ton of tables so just a warning if you come at peak times i would guess you would have to wait longer. They have a pretty big beer selection, which was nice to enjoy with my pizza. I had an IPA of Groton by "thebarnct." I love that they are supporting CT breweries! I got a classic cheese pizza and man was it good! Seems like a classic "apizza," but the medium came with enough slices that I was able to take five home! I ate about five in the restaurant. Overall, I am very impressed with Zuppardis, definitely had a "small town vibe" and the staff were super friendly. Visiting from out of state and was referred to Zuppardi's for the "good CT pizza" I've been curious about. I looked on Yelp and saw it had descent reviews and thought I'd check out their menu to place an order - the menu that's available from their website- not photos from previous patrons. Well, I saw a large mozzarella was $17.25 so, I added onions, mushroom and sausage With the understanding there were additional fees for toppings. After consuming the pizza the bill arrives and what I thought was a $17.25 pizza plus toppings turns out to be a $33 pizza total (before taxes). I question the waitress and she states the price on Yelp is incorrect and if I wanted the current pricing I should grab a "Togo" menu. The pizza wasn't bad but not worth $33 and poor customer service. read more

I spent $52 on a "Fresh Clam" pizza, and it was the most insulting dining experience of my trip. As a seafood lover, I understand that a stray piece of grit can sometimes happen. When the server first checked on us, I politely said everything was fine. However, as we continued, every single bite was filled with sand. It was improperly prepared and inedible. My husband felt the same. The service issues were shocking. First, debris inside my water glass. Already poured my 1.8L bottled soda, they replaced the glass but replaced my soda with a cheap fountain drink without asking. When we complained about the sandy pizza, the kitchen was condescending and offered two ridiculous options: 1) Pay 50% for the sandy pizza and buy a NEW one at full price, or 2) Get a SMALLER size clam pizza as a replacement. Why should I pay more or settle for less due to their mistake? As you can see in the photo, the pizza wasn't 'eaten'--it was dissected and abandoned. The napkins are filled with the numerous sandy clams we had to spit out. We left more than half of the pizza on the table because it was impossible to continue. Yet, when I decided to just pay the 50% ($26) and leave, I was demanded I leave the rest of the pizza behind while still charging me. In the end, I paid $36 total (including the soda and a courtesy tip) for a meal I couldn't even eat. This place ruins trips with their greed. Travelers, stay away. New Yorkers talk about our pizza with pride, knowing full well that try as they might, imitators will not be able to make pizza as good. Plus, getting pizza by the slice isn't part of the culture or economy of most places outside NY, so it's a losing game for most. Chicago pizza is it's own category that can hardly be compared to the pizza I know from NY, but New Haven pizza can kinda sorta give NY's a run for its money. I've done a tour of New Haven's pizza spots maybe twice now, and returned to Zuppardi's on a recent road trip specifically because I wanted that clam pie again. It was decent, but my crew thought less so. I think they prefer red pies, and a white pie really needs to really pack a flavor punch to wow them, and unfortunately this didn't. I follow a mostly pescatarian diet and love seafood so I'm more partial to it but I agree there could have been a lot more umami on the pie. The toastiness of the bread was great though. I won't name the other pizzerias I liked more in this review, but when it comes to clam pie Zuppardi's is king. Recommend ordering over the phone for pick up as the fastest option. read more
