Came here with a group of 5 during my first trip to Connecticut for work, and it was a great introduction to a local New Haven pizzeria. We arrived right as they were about to open and were seated immediately, which was much appreciated since the place was busy--people waiting outside in line to get a seat the whole time we were there. Service was friendly and efficient throughout the meal. We ordered the mozzarella and tomato pie, the potato and rosemary pie, and the cannoli pie for dessert. The mozzarella and tomato pie was classic and delicious with fresh flavors, while the potato and rosemary pie was an interesting combo. Super crispy, savory, and something different. The cannoli pie was a good sized, shareable slice a great way to end the meal. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that everything was very good, but not quite mind-blowing. One of my favorite pizza places and it is rich in history. The crust is excellent thin crust with a slight char from the coal fired oven. The first bite bends off the slice, but after that bite, it's crunchy and firm. The sauce is the standout here as the pie has covered and then the toppings follow. It is not over cheesed so I you like it that way, you will have to specify. The pepperoni cups as it should as they collect the flavorful oils. The cherry peppers have a decent amount of spice and the mushrooms are fresh. They do have pepper flakes, oregano, and Parmesan on the side. Expect to wait in line unless you get there before opening time. They also have a parking lot for Sally's customers only. read more

Came to town for work and had to try the holy trinity of pizza, this was stop 2. Now compared to the others, I think this was favorite. I waited on a Tuesday night around 6:30 for about 45 minutes in the freezing cold 40 degree weather with no jacket. It was so worth the wait. Pizza I opted for was the half meatball & hot cherry peppers and also the original. It was so good, lots of flavor and tasted with nice char underneath. The original was good, but I needed to dress it with parm cheese, garlic and oregano. I did that after I tried a slice without it. It was still really good. 9.5/10. I washed it down with the white birch beer and finished with the cannoli cake. You have too. But the cannoli cake here, good, wasn't my fav. The one at FP was better. I finally tried Sallys! What an experience it was! Recently, I did a pizza tour in New Haven for my birthday. Sally's was our second stop. We came in the afternoon mid February and had maybe a 30 minute wait outside. They certainly have a system down. Once seated, we decided to have some of Sallys very own red wine. It was better than I expected! We had to try the traditional Apizza with no toppings and boy it did not disappoint! The rich but not sweet sauce was one of the best I've ever had. Completely worth the hype when it comes to Little Italy in New Haven. This place was worth every second we waited in line to be seated which was about an hour. I was not disappointed in the slightest as the pizza tastes amazing and incredibly fresh. While I am not always a fan of thin pizza, this was particularly delicious in its own right. Had a very weird interaction when we first walked in. We came on a Sunday early around 10:50 am. We were able to get free street parking down the road. Definitely get the Calabrian Stinger and maybe the Clam and Garlic if you've never had it before. The Calabrian Stinger was jammy, spicy and delicious. Clam and Garlic was a good average pizza, but I thought the lack of sauce made the dough a little bit tougher than I would've liked! They created a historical pizzeria with their iconic coal fired oven and family recipes. Icons like Frank Sinatra fell in love with the place. Years later in todays era it this still a place where hearts are filled. Bellies too! So we came in for some good ol' famous NEW HAVEN style pizza! Boy was I excited. Been hearing about that crunch, that well toasted pie and that super delicious sauce! After ordering our food and over hearing the family business was sold, but still overlooked by the original family. I was ready to feast on the epic pie. We ordered a house salad and large Mozz and Sauce pie with a few sodas. Keep it original and staff kept it professional! Need to mention you're sitting in an old school restaurant, with decor dating back to when ya motha and pops were born! Finally the food has arrived, salad was a hit! For the most part Sally's Apizza lives up to the hype. Sadly, hype brings a flock of people waiting to eat there. It's great that they've got a parking lot, but it's tiny so you're probably gonna have to look for street parking. My party of 2 waited about 40-ish minutes to be seated on a random Wednesday around 12:30PM. We ordered tomato & mozzarella, potato & rosemary, and white clam pies. My favorite is a toss up between the clam and the potato pies but I'd probably lean potato just because of how unique it is. All of the pies had great, thin crust with a good char to it. If you're looking up reviews for Sally's you've probably already read a bunch of rave reviews. It's certainly worth trying. Finally made it to Sally's. It was the last of the "big ones" in New Haven that I hadn't been to. We placed an order for a small pizza, half mozzarella, and half mozzarella and sausage. Ordered it online for pickup and went down to get it. How was it? Tad disappointed, honestly. Small Half Sausage Pizza- The pizza looked beautiful. Vibrant red tomatoes, nicely sliced disks of sausage. I couldn't wait to dig in. Once I did though, meh. Couple things wrong with it. First of all, for ordering mozzarella on a pizza, they sure don't put a lot on it. Saw way more sauce than cheese. Second, the bottom of the pizza wasn't really charred that great and it had a layer of flour on it. Like a barrier between the dough and the oven. It was weird. Lastly, when I took a bite, the sauce or something on the pizza had a "soapy" aftertaste. Both my Brother and I tasted it, so I know it wasn't just me "trippin". We finished the pizza as to not waste food, but that soapy taste threw the enjoyment out the window. Hoping that this was a "one off". If not, Sally's must have dropped off the side of the map from the good old glory days and reviews of the past. I still would come back though to see if it was just the "one off". Finally got a chance to come and compare this to Frank Pepe, and I can confidently say I prefer Sally's! I came on a Thursday for lunch and waited probably 15 minutes before a table opened up. I appreciated that they had umbrellas to shade people waiting in line. There's also a parking lot next to the restaurant which is convenient since it's free and close. Inside, it feels like you stepped back in time. I liked the photos on the wall and the large booths. The large booths are the best because the pizzas come on huge baking trays which take up a lot of surface area on the table. For our party of four, we ordered three pizzas (Fresh Tomato, Potato & Rosemary, Pepperoni) and two 1/2 liter Foxon Park bottles of Ginger Ale. So i heard about this place from the hotel and knew CT was known for their pizza. Decided while in Rome.. I got there at 5:15ish and was shocked by the line just to get in. I was super excited thinking this had to be the best pizza on earth. I waited over an hour and a half just to get in the door. My waiter was super sweet and said order your pizza asap because it can't take 45-55 more minutes to get your pizza. I ordered pepperoni, mushroom and hot peppers and waited hungrily for my pie. As I sat and watched couples and groups after me come in a get their pizzas way before me my waiter assured me mine was next maybe other 8 min...15 min or so later the manager came up and apologized but my pizza got burned and they were remaking it. Sigh...so the pizza in the picture finally arrived about 1:40 after I sat down. If this isn't burned I guess I don't want to see the other one. To be clear I really like char on pizza but this was a lot imo! The biggest disappointment was the pizza really just wasn't that great. Definitely not worth the nearly 4 hours I spent waiting for it. I thought the sauce was bland and obviously that the char was too much. I want to add that they did refund the cost of my pizza due to the really long wait. Turns out the first pizza wasn't burned they lost my ticket. The manager covered with the burnt story but the waiter didn't know he said that so he apologized that they lost my ticket. My nephew and I decided to have a day trip adventure to New Haven and the first thing that came up in terms of "things to do" after visiting Yale was New Haven appiza and Sally's was highly recommended. Because we visited Sally's towards the end of our day, I smartly placed an order on their website for takeout. What I will say is, I wasn't alone: there were many people waiting in line to be seated inside and Sally's takes very good care of customers while on line. They offered free hot chocolate at a self-service station (possibly the best hot chocolate that I've ever had) and when the skys opened and it began to rain on all of us- the staff brought out umbrellas for all. well played! Once our food was done and we went to Union Station to dig in, I was happy for the experience. We ordered the classic and a spicy meatball pie. I'm a New York pizza (let me get a slice please) type of lady, but I'm willing to try other options. That fact alone may bias my opinion. The pizza was flavorful and the thin slices offered a consistent crunch that reminded you it was made in the coal fire. I definitely appreciated and enjoyed the pizza....just not sure that it justifies a more than 45-minute wait (I've heard it goes up to 2 hours). I can't comment on the ambiance since I never went inside. We didn't want to wait for a table. Old timey decor -- formica table tops and wood paneling. It seemed like a good place to get pizza and pitchers of beer. We ordered a Meats Apizza, a Mozzarella & Tomato Sauce Pie, and a pitcher of Sally's Apilz. Sally's Apilz is brewed exclusively for Sally's by Two Roads Brewing Company. A perfect beer for pizza. Lighter body and lighter flavor pilsner, but not a watery American light beer. A great accompaniment, but not overpowering. You can't have pizza with something like a black chocolate stout. The pizza is thin crusted and charred. A thin layer of mozzarella, not big heaps. Very high quality pizza. The only drawback was it took about forty minutes to get the pizzas. They have a massive take out and delivery business. I think that's why our superb waitress encouraged us to start with a salad. From there, we figured we would wander over to Frank Peppe's. It's only a block or so away. We waited in line for about twenty minutes. Not too bad. We weren't concerned about that, because we were still digesting Sally's. Frank Peppe's decor is much more modern than Sally's, and it has a much bigger dining room. We ordered a sausage and peppers pie and a pitcher of Sam Adams Cold Snap. Another great beer for pizza. Frank Peppe's was also thin crust, not overwhelmed with mozzarella, but not as charred as Sally's Apizza. Again, great pizza. From there, we figured that Modern Apizza is only a five minute drive, so we might as well go. We had cold feet when we walked in the door. But we made eye contact with the waiter, so we had to go in. We skipped the beer, and ordered a plain pie with a liter of Foxon Park soda. It's a popular local brand with all sorts of old timey flavors. Modern was thicker crust than Sally's and Frank Peppe's, a heavy layer of mozzarella cheese, and no char. It's not New York pizza, but it's closer to NY than Connecticut pizza. It came in third place. My favorite is a toss up between Sally's Apizza and Frank Peppe's, but Sally's might be a teeny bit higher up than Frank Peppe's. To make a fair comparison, I would probably need to go back and get the same exact pies from each place and compare. The great thing about Connecticut pizza is it doesn't have a thin crust, and heaps of cheese. You can order a bunch of different pizzas and try a bunch of different slices. read more
