We picked out several and just last night finished the last. We should have also ordered pasta, because there pasta is great, but next time. They have the best pizza and pasta. The frozen is just as good as being there. But being there is so great. The place is clean and spotless. It is so cute and it is pretty big. It can get crowded, but you will get a seat. The service is so nice. Many of the people have been there forever. They know the menu well and will help you. They are fast and never rush you. Sally's Apizza offers some great pizza, but has some major issues in what should be the highlight of a coal fired pizza. The tomato pie has a nice sauce with a strong tomato flavor. I enjoyed the tomato pie more than I thought I would but a pizza with cheese on it would have been better. The summer special pizza, shrimp scampi was fabulous. The shrimp wasn't too chewy and the garlic works so well on the pizza. This is an absolute favorite of everyone in our party. My biggest issue with both pies is the crust edges are overcooked. I like some char but there is just too much that it just tastes bad. I almost never throw out the crust of a pizza but I had to do it for almost every slice here. When it comes to crispy, charred apizza, Sally's does it exceptionally well. Food: We got 2 12" pies, the classic tomato and mozzarella and the seasonal shrimp scampi. The tomato and moz pie was everything I wanted out of this New Haven specialty. Charred, light, and cracker-like crust met with bright fresh tomato sauce and a thin layer of baked in cheese that combines into one flat unit of tasty. The shrimp scampi pie took it in a different direction. As more of a white style of pizza, the topping of shrimp, confit garlic, onion , and lemon made for a scrumptiously bright and oceanic apizza pairing nicely with the smokey, charred wood fired base. Walking out with black dusted fingertips was a badge of honor! Service: We got here on a weekend before 11 and had to wait approximately 30 min to be seated and then 35 min to get our apizzas after ordering. One of the best places you can go in New Haven for pizza. New Haven is known for their pizza and just on this block where Sally's is you will find two local spots where die hard pizza lovers frequent. Sally's still has an old school pizza parlor feel to the place with much of the original furnishing and decor still up. On a weekend you can expect to wait in line for about 2-3 hours and then it's another 30 min or so for them to make the pizza. We got their SM stinger and the toppings and pizza were top notch. Always heard about how New Haven has the best pizza so we made the stop as we were driving from NH back to NJZ We waited in the heat for about an hour in line before we were able to get seated inside. It was HOT in there, space isn't as big as I thought and in the back the oven is obviously running non-stop to keep up with demand. We were told once we were seated and ordered that our pies might take 45 minutes. We ordered drinks and a Caesar salad to start, food came out maybe 25 minutes later so it wasn't too bad. I remember the Caesar salad being really good but it would also be because we were really hungry from the wait lol. Well the reputation of Sally's initially came from recommendations from acquaintances and uber driver. This doesn't happen in VA Beach where am visiting from; but not a novice in dealing with I-95 traffic since I've lived in Northern VA for 36 years. Anyway why am I describing all this? Is Sally's truly worth the hype, long lines and oh btw for pickup/delivery you get in line to order, and have to come back 45 minutes to pick up your order!?? The notable thing is that service is a 4 for takeout. You have to wait a few minutes for the staff who takes orders to be at his station to take the order. He disappears for minutes. But ordering was quick and when they tell you ready gif pickup by 4:15pm, it was ready (but of course got to get in line for that too!) The answer is: only if you don't want to drive to NY to get really great pizza. I ordered the garden (signature) pizza. For my boyfriend's second time visiting CT, we had to have him try Sally's -- even if it was the only place on Wooster Street with a line at 12pm during a 90 degree day. (We won't mention which place we took him to for his first time, but I'lll say he said his consensus after was that he preferred the pizza here). As a CT native who now lives out of state, I hadn't even been to Sally's or the other since I was probably a teenager. My dad has always gone on saying how Sally's is his number one, and now I finally see why. It has a more rustic, home cooked quality to it. After waiting in line for an hour, we cooled inside with some crisp Foxon Park Birch Beer and a fresh Caesar salad hit the spot. When it comes to Connecticut apizza, conventional wisdom says there are three bucket-list spots you must try: Frank Pepe, Moderna, and Sally's. We managed to hit Frank Pepe's and Sally's on our New England summer holiday, and Sally's was easily the best of the two. We ordered the burrata pizza, half pepperoni. The sauce was packed with flavor, the burrata is always a total hit, and the pepperoni cupped perfectly to hold all those rich, flavorful oils. The crust was great--charred beautifully on the edges but a little moist and wiggly in the middle, heavily reminding me of Da Michele in Napoli. They also conveniently provide red pepper flakes, oregano, and Parmesan on the side so you can fix it up to taste. The ambiance is classic and cozy. It's a smaller establishment with booth-style tables lining both sides of the room. Because indoor seating is limited, you should absolutely expect to wait in a long line unless you plan ahead. We lucked out by timing our visit right between the lunch and dinner rush, meaning we snagged a spot in their dedicated parking lot and were seated immediately with zero wait. To top it off, the service was incredibly friendly, helpful, and welcoming from the moment we walked through the door. The first bite bends off the slice, but after that bite, it's crunchy and firm. The sauce is the standout here as the pie has covered and then the toppings follow. It is not over cheesed so I you like it that way, you will have to specify. The pepperoni cups as it should as they collect the flavorful oils. The cherry peppers have a decent amount of spice and the mushrooms are fresh. They do have pepper flakes, oregano, and Parmesan on the side. I waited on a Tuesday night around 6:30 for about 45 minutes in the freezing cold 40 degree weather with no jacket. It was so worth the wait. It was an honor to visit one of the most famous pizza shops in existence. The atmosphere takes you back to 90s. So much nostalgia and a real local vibe. The Potatoe pizza was my favorite. Mid, sellout tourist pizza. I never had a good pizza from Sally's even before they sold out and took the corporate path like pepes. No pizza is worth a 2+ hour wait in line wrapped around several blocks. In response to people complaining about the way the staff talks to you - its just the way they talk. I finally tried Sallys! What an experience it was! Recently, I did a pizza tour in New Haven for my birthday. Sally's was our second stop. We came in the afternoon mid February and had maybe a 30 minute wait outside. They certainly have a system down. Once seated, we decided to have some of Sallys very own red wine. The Calabrian stinger was the best amongst the three pizzas that we got. The clam was ok but the tomato sauce really stood out in the other pizzas. The tomato was perfectly tarty and I loved that the pizza was not too salty. Some of the parts were unfortunately a bit too burnt but for the most part, the pizza was worth the hour wait especially if you are visiting from out of town. The Calabrian stinger was such a good pick, and I loved the sturdiness of the crust.
