Modern had been on the bucket-list for a while now, and I was finally able to cross it off. We did take out, to avoid the line outside, during lunch time. It was a beautiful day, so pizza outside sounded like a plan. A small sausage pizza for me, and I must say, I regretted not visiting much earlier. Modern for sure is top 3. Even though this place is busy inside and takeout, the wait is not too long, and worth it. When in New Haven you can't skip Modern, and if you haven't been there yet, don't wait as long as I did.

What a pleasant surprise! My DS picked out this place and I sure am glad! We apparently arrived moments after they opened and there were quite a few people already seated. Our table was in the back area so I was able to look around at the rest of the restaurant as we were seated. We ordered an appetizer caesar salad which was large enough for 3 and was delicious. I am not necessarily a huge fan of thin crust pizza, but am open to trying new things. The crust was not crispy at all... it was chewy and delicious. The sauce was perfect. We ordered a medium which was on the edge of being just enough or not quite large enough for 3 hungry people including a 22 year old athletic man with a large appetite. Turned out it was just enough! When we left there was a line in their entry way and plenty of people waiting outside... and I'm sure it was definitely worth the wait! Fortunately for me my plane was delayed so that we could enjoy this iconic Connecticut pizza place.

Modern PIZZA gets an easy five star review I can give it a few more stars but maybe next time. New Haven Pizza is pretty famous and there are a few places around with big names. My favorite part about modern is that only is a pizza absolutely the best but the service is nice... Aiden was a great server the food came fast he came hot. They just crank out that PIZZA nonstop! Love the feel of the place. They're efficient they turn the tables around and serve you fast and make you happy! I've been to the other places I think the one with the girls name comes to mind. I don't think you have to have rude service to make great pizza... modern Pizza is the real deal with real service! You rock modern Pizza!

    - Private parking lot fills up quickly during lunch and likely stays busy throughout the day with a steady stream of diners; we arrived a little after 10:30am on a Saturday (right at opening) and had no wait - Restaurant is quite large, with two dining areas offering plenty of cozy booths and tables, plus a separate section dedicated to takeout orders - Absolutely phenomenal service; staff were warm, genuinely friendly, and attentive throughout our entire meal - Really good pizza--made fresh, generously loaded with toppings, and a thin crust with a nice bite: white clams casino had plenty of chopped clams, though the flavor was a bit overpowered by the bacon; Italian bomb was overflowing with toppings - We were invited to check out the kitchen where the pizza magic happens--such a thoughtful gesture and a fun experience for the kids!

Did not disappoint. I had both Modern and Frank Pepe in the same night - give them both a 9/10. Modern I love because it is family owned and has one location. It does New Haven Pizza - and it does it very well. Great service and the Caesar Salad is a great starter.

Good experience, not great pizza... If you're in town looking to try the trinity of New Haven pizza spots, personally, I'd rank this the bottom of the list. I've heard a lot about modern and heard that many prefer it over frank Pepe's or Sally's. Respectfully I can't agree. The staff was great, service was fast, great Ceasar salad and garlic bread, but the pizza had me wanting more. First and foremost, it didn't have ANY solid undercarriage. I think it was too cheesy. It was so floppy my sister said "hey it looks like the pizza from the goofy movie", and she was right. 2 stars for me. It wasn't really memorable. I've had pizzas with better undercarriages, not even New Haven style. The mozerella was overpowering, I could barely taste the sauce.

I went to Modern for lunch on a rainy Thursday. Success! I got a spot in the parking lot and a table. It was busy but quiet during lunch time. The waiter came shortly after I sat down. I ordered a medium sausage pizza and tap water. My pizza took about 20 minutes to come out. Heaven! Disclosure: I grew up in New Haven and am biased in favor of New Haven pizza. I sat at a booth which was clean and spacious.

Finally got to try one of the legends! Was afraid of a long wait but got in at 4pm on a Thursday no wait at all. The host was super friendly to us, gave us a couple of recs. Loved the pizza, THIN sauce/cheese topics loved it, crispy edges how pizza should be. Loved the garlic bread as well and shoutout to them to supporting local with the soda as well. Love to see an old school spot like this staying busy, and everyone loves them!

Just returning from a CT pizza tour and Modern took the cake! We literally flew in on a Thursday night, dropped our bags at the hotel, and scooted over to Modern. The wait to get in was maybe 15 minutes as it was already 8 or so. I was so excited to be there that I wanted multiple pies. We got a large mozzarella and a small sausage. Sausage was quite tasty but the mozzarella was simple incredible! The crust has just the right amount of crisp and the cheese is loaded on the delicious tomato sauce. Cannot stop thinking about the most perfect bite of pizza!

Oh, Modern. How do I love thee? I love you so much that it's where we chose to have dinner after getting married at city hall 7 years ago! The dough is perfectly chewy with just the right amount of crisp, the char is immaculate, the sauce is divine, and every topping always melds together into something transcendental! They always seem well staffed and their staff is friendly and welcoming. There's a pretty decent amount of seating and it just has that old school pizza joint vibe. As with all the New Haven pizza joints parking isn't perfect, but they do have a small lot and the area itself doesn't feel as congested as some others. As with every other time I have a pizza from Modern, I currently can't stop thinking about it! Can't wait until my next one!

I got there about half hour after opening and it was already packed but the wait wasn't terribly long. They did offer five dollar beer and wine while you wait just bring cash. Once inside the place had a nice cozy environment and service was very quick. Do arrive with plenty of time. The pizza was exactly what you would expect from a New Haven style pizza with that nice crisp crust.

There was a wait of about 15 mins to be seated. I got a small Italian bomb($24) and it came out in about 20 mins. The pizza crust was very good! Charred and crispy. Meat was good. Definitely worth the wait to try this coal fired pizza.

The pizza was perfectly baked, fresh and hot, with a noticeable amount of char. The crust was thin, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, offering a direct burst of olive-oily flavor that was quickly balanced by tomatoes and basil. I remember Margherita pizzas not having olives, but this one did, giving it a slightly tart flavor that was quite refreshing. The umami of the mushrooms added another layer of flavor as well. Original Tomato Pie with Mozzarella: We added sausage and pepperoni. The sausage pieces were large, perfectly seasoned, tender yet firm, with a distinct marinated aroma. The pepperoni was slightly dry but not tough, with a salty and slightly spicy flavor. These toppings made the pizza more fragrant, but also inevitably greasier; you could see a layer of oil seeping onto the pizza paper. Overall, it was much better than the Modern Apizza I had last time, which was unbearably salty. Finally, as a century-old establishment, this restaurant makes authentic New Haven Apizza, and the less cheese is exactly what it's supposed to be. If you think lots of cheese should be a staple of pizza, then there's no need to try it.

It was just delicious!! It's a short ride from my house so we'll be going back to sample the many other options they offer. Our server was very pleasant and gave us some history about the place. She seemed genuinely happy to be there. The ambiance is a little touristy, but the food was authentic and that was very easy to overlook. Not especially expensive either.

We had the ricotta and honey on toast, meatballs, prosciutto/mozzarella to start, some white wine and of course PIZZA! The pizza was light and cooked perfectly. We had the Dolce Salato and the Diavolina. We loved the Dolce Salato! The Diavolina was good, but I think some more spicy salami or maybe an additional spicy component would have been a good addition to the pizza. It needed just a little bit more on the flavor side. But still everything here is high quality and I would recommend! Service was excellent. We were immediately seated and had the option to sit inside or outside. I first sat inside, then we moved to a larger table outside. What I really appreciated as a new mom, was their openness and flexibility for coming in with a stroller. I was nervous to be a burden to the restaurant, but they were super accommodating. Thank you On room for improvement, I think on a hot day, having the inside space being much much cooler, than the outdoor seating (especially for newborns/really young kids/elderly) would be beneficial. Yesterday it was cool inside to start (and remember I chose to move outside), but they started to leave the front door open to allow for easy movement of staff and guests between inside and outside, which made the indoor space get warmer over time. And I totally get that for the ease of movement for staff/guests, but maybe consider keeping it super cool on the inside, so that kiddos/elderly have a cool space on a really hot day to not overheat. The vibe here is great. Chill, warm and light! Come with family and/or friends and enjoy!

Well the reputation of Sally's initially came from recommendations from acquaintances and uber driver. So I figured: Sally's must truly be the best pizza in New Haven the pizzz capital of USA (well that's what the signage at New Haven Tweed airport says!) So on a Monday mid-afternoon (July 13 2026) I made sure I put my Teams offline and drove to New Haven from Milford. Traffic on 95 but that's I guess typical. This doesn't happen in VA Beach where am visiting from; but not a novice in dealing with I-95 traffic since I've lived in Northern VA for 36 years. Anyway why am I describing all this? Is Sally's truly worth the hype, long lines and oh btw for pickup/delivery you get in line to order, and have to come back 45 minutes to pick up your order!?? The notable thing is that service is a 4 for takeout. You have to wait a few minutes for the staff who takes orders to be at his station to take the order. He disappears for minutes. But ordering was quick and when they tell you ready gif pickup by 4:15pm, it was ready (but of course got to get in line for that too!) The answer is: only if you don't want to drive to NY to get really great pizza. I ordered the garden (signature) pizza. It looked like a garden alright: vibrant green not overload of red pizza sauce or overly sprinkled cheese. The crust was pretty thin (way I like it) but not as thin as real pizza in Italy. The toppings were fresh. But it was on the bland unseasoned side. I'd give the pizza a 3.

We arrived on a Monday around peak dinner time, but there was essentially no wait (apparently uncommon according to my friend -- just a delightful consequence of dining at a college town during the summer). We split a medium pizza (1/2 elote mexican street corn and 1/2 bbq brisket), proving to be more than enough for two plus a more than ample amount of leftovers. Recently, I've gravitated toward thinner pizzas, a far cry from the typical Detroit (foccacia-esque) style pizzas I used to prefer, and BAR's pizza is akin to a flatbread yet very thin, another fallen angel to the GLP's. The undercarriage boasts a brilliant crust, almost cracker-like. However, it should be noted that the pizza is indulgent all the same. The elote pizza is quite possibly the most memorable, unique pizza I've ever had; it arrives almost crimson-red with a generous layer of corn and takis atop. It's still incredibly well balanced despite the hodgepodge of varied toppings. It's hard to pick a favorite between this and the bbq brisket though; while one is incredibly unique the other is simply sumptuous, nothing pedestrian about either of the two. The service is also impeccable, almost rivaling that of southern hospitality. I always thought Californians were friendly but something is in the air every time I visit New Haven. Incredible!

BAR is an interesting restaurant: open air, picnic tables, open space, paper plates, no utensils unless you ask for them, etc. We were greeted right away by a less than friendly waiter who seemed peeved we didn't have a drink to order right away. Strike one. After a few minutes, everyone put their drink order in and I asked if the bartender could make me a mojito since it wasn't on the menu. The waiter said yes, so I waited. Then came the mojito. It was the worst "mojito" I've tasted in my life. I'm not one to send a drink back because of an "I don't taste any alcohol" excuse, but this was BAD. It tasted like margarita mix with lime and mint sprigs thrown in. It was absolutely terrible. When I double checked with the waiter if the drink was an original mojito he simply said yes, not "is something wrong with the drink?" or "would you like to send it back?" The drink was so bad I told him I couldn't drink it. He was peeved again. Strike two. I asked for a soft drink instead and the soda was flat (strike 3), but at this point I just needed something to drink... because who wants to have water with their pizza? Then came the time to make a dinner choice. My mission was to try the mashed potato pizza. It was hands down AMAZING!! Mashed potatoes and bacon on a pizza. Yes, please!! This was the only saving grace from my experience. I would return to BAR again if only for that pizza! Two of my friends had the clam pizza and the pepperoni/mushroom. Both enjoyed their own! Warming: New Haven pizza is thin crust. I got two meals out of a small, so if you visit with a group, consider ordering a few small pizzas so you can taste a few. I would've given BAR 4 or 5 stars, but the unpleasant waiter, the "mojito," and the flat sofa made for a trifecta, so I'm giving my visit 3 stars. If I find myself in New Haven again, I'll be back! Hopefully my next update will be 5 stars!

This place is small, unapologetic, and full of character. Decorative firewood stacked with intention, walls filled with wine corks, and #10 tomato cans repurposed as pizza stands. Walk in and you immediately catch the vibe, exposed brick, distressed plaster, a slightly industrial, almost factory-style feel that somehow still feels warm and welcoming. The centerpiece of the room is the wood-fired oven, running hot and glowing with that perfect orange flame. The aroma of burning wood hits you right away and sets the tone. From that moment on, the culinary experience is in motion. We ordered The Mootz and Breaking My Meatballs. Both pies are built on a very thin, tender crust with beautiful leoparding. The dough is flavorful and clearly well-fermented. Sauce is applied with restraint, just enough to support the dough and cheese without overpowering them, and it delivers a clean, bright tomato flavor. Breaking My Meatballs was the standout. Homemade meatballs, herbed ricotta, cherry peppers, mozzarella, and that same balanced sauce. The cherry peppers bring a sharp vinegar tang that cuts perfectly through the richness of the ricotta and meatballs. Every bite hits a different note, and it all works together. Easily one of my favorites. The crust across the board was thin and tender with a delicate smoky char from the wood fire, exactly what you want from this style. Bottom line: Great spot. Kwok has more than 20 years experience in the hospitality industry. Some of the other restaurants he has opened include Sweet Basil in Fairfield, Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Cafe in Westport, and Eat Noodle in Bridgeport. Kwok and Nguyen's latest venture opened at the Connecticut Post Mall in a restaurant space that was previously home to Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar, which specialized in tavern-style pizzas cooked in a cast-iron skillet. 8 Thousand Pizza offers this same style of pizza, but what sets them apart from the previous pizzeria is that they also offer self-pouring technology, which became legalized in Connecticut in 2021. The food menu features two dozen tavern-style pizzas as well as burgers, wings, fries, salads and soups. Through the use of a supplied electronic bracelet, customers can self-pour their own beverage from a selection of 28 craft beer taps and 6 wine taps. There's a two-pint or 32-ounce limit for the self-pours. I recently visited 8 Thousand Pizza for dinner. I had previously visited the space when it was Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar and was sad to hear that they moved. However, this new business concept of a tavern-style pizzeria with self-pouring taps sounded very interesting to me. This was actually my first visit to a self-pouring taproom, as these types of establishments only just began opening in the state in the last few years. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the "Grandma's Tomato Pizza" (fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, roasted garlic, tomatoes and EVOO) and the "Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza" (tomato sauce, pepperoni, hot honey sauce and mozzarella cheese). The latter happens to be 8 Thousand's signature pizza. Both pizzas had crust so thin that it's almost cracker like; they didn't flop at all. They were super crispy with excellent sauce and toppings. I honestly can't decide which one I liked better; they were both very good. During my visit, I enjoyed some self-pours of Grey Sail Brewing's "Captain's Daughter" (Double New England IPA) and New Park Brewing's "Cloudscape" (American IPA). Delicious pizza with craft beer is always an excellent pairing! I had a really nice experience at 8 Thousand Pizza and I hope to return with my family.

Paying by the ounce. Service was nice and attentive. But you have to go up to the counter to order. Many of the betas were out or empty. I did like that. They had a wide selection of glasses available for the different styles of beer.

Now let me tell you...THE SAUCE. I dream about it. It's enough where one night my husband and I craved pizza and I said we had to drive to New Haven to see Joe and crush a pepperoni pizza. If they have the tomato pie? GET IT. The rare Kale white pie? A vegetarian's dream. Keep an eye on the Instagram for which pizzas are coming out and how many. I came in a different night after going out in New Haven with a group and we snagged the last pizza at about 9:30pm, only 2 hours after they began service. Joe is also just fantastic. He's friendly, a caring dad (the pizza is named after his three sons, and why you see three basils on each pizza), and he does this after he perfected the recipe during Covid and is now sharing it with the world. Crisp pepperonis (how I like them), addicting sauce, unique flavor combos, go see Joe. He knows what he's doing. Maybe a good thing I have to drive 45 min for this pizza because I'd otherwise be here every weekend. Definitely a pizza worth checking out!

It was my first time here. My better half has been here quite a few times in the past, and always…read morespoke highly of it. Mediterranean is not my jive but it seemed like a good spot for a date night. Seemed. We were seated quickly, which was nice. It wasn't what I'd consider busy, but apparently it was busy for them on this particular night of service. Took about 15min from the time we were seated to have our order taken. Better half says it is usually more calming and intimate. Tonight absolutely was not that. It gives... Starbucks, if it served Mediterranean food... like, no coffee. With teacup candles. Real ones. (fire code???) I ordered the wings, with low expectations. Anyone that knows me and my heart also knows how I feel about a good wing. These wings were not that. They came out looking exactly how I anticipated them to based on what I saw in previous reviews (and the item description, which, shockingly, was painfully accurate) -- sad, and beige. First bite revealed various shades of pink, although the skin was seasoned nicely. I'm partial against this style of chicken wing so its hard for me to give it any credit... moving on. I also had the chicken kebab sandwich... which isn't really a sandwich. Its more of a ... gyro? I liked it. The chicken in the sandwich was really nice. Cooked well, definitely cooked better than the wings. Wish the cuts/pieces were smaller though. It was nice and hot, but also kind of wet, I guess from steam? It came wrapped in sort of a parchment paper, that was also wet. And the closer I got to the end, the more liquid dripped out from the bottom. Water mixed with tomato, other spices and whatnot... it wasn't pretty. I got less and less interested as I made progress. Better half got the Merguez Kebab Sandwich/gyro thing. Similar to my Chicken Kebab, the cuts of meat were huge however it was just hard to come to terms with the notion that they were each fully cooked through, and it was also... wet. More wet than my Chicken Kebab. She didn't finish it, and I don't blame her. The hummus was nice. The pita was hot and fresh. You could see some of the char from the skillet it was made in, which was nice. Unfortunate that either are individual at-cost appetizers (although looking at my receipt, I can infer that the first pita was included with the hummus as I was only charged for one and we had two). I don't think I will be returning there on my own volition. Maybe tonight was a bad night, and that happens sometimes. The staff were certainly nice, and considering it was a Saturday evening, the volume of patrons is worth appreciation. It wasn't rowdy, the music was nice, the ceiling fan blades passing over one of the ceiling lights drove me crazy a little bit, but it is a nice place. I'm just a little let down that this was how my Saturday night dinner went. I'm still hungry, dawg. There was also a woman in scrubs(?) or some sort of inpatient-wear that walked past the restaurant outside, locked eyes with the folks at a table, smiled and waved, and slowly meandered away until she came back to walk in the other direction. Not sure what that was about, but its typical New Haven shit. Stranger things have happened, lol! TLDR if you're not super picky/sensitive about your food and you're a big (gotta be big) fan of Mediterranean Fusion food, I absolutely recommend RAWA. Otherwise... hard pass -- for me, at least. Respectfully.

Can't wait to return and this time to catch the after hour scene! Looks like a good time and great for large groups.
