This is my second time trying New Haven style pizza. I came here around 8:15 pm on a Friday night and there was 9 parties ahead of me. It probably too. 30 mins before I was seated. I ordered their clams casino and their Italian bomb. I really enjoyed both! For the clam, I had it white and red for the Italian bomb. I would probably get both red next time.
We had no idea that New Haven, CT was considered the pizza capital of the US so being the pizza snob I am, just had to try one of the top three rated places. Arrived around 3 pm on a Tuesday and a number of tables were occupied. Be warned that the photo menu on Yelp is different than what you get in the restaurant. There are only two "specialty" pizzas - Margarita and the Italian Bomb; all others are create your own. High marks for thin crunchy crust and generous, flavorful toppings. Served with real flatware, paper plates, and a big pile of napkins. Iced tea is served in a large glass but no refills. Interior is dark (full of atmosphere!) with booths galore. Service was friendly and attentive. Street and small parking lot available. Delicious but not inexpensive: two small pizzas, three iced teas were $60, before gratuity.
Modern was pretty good, more reasonable price than a lot of other places too. Very well rounded flavor profile, as if almost a machine made the perfect pizza. The strengths, good pizza, for a good price.
I came here following in the footsteps of my longtime culinary food idol - Adam Richman. Safe to say it's rare I am ever let down by his recommendations and eclectic pallate. Modern Apizza is absolutely worth trying if you're arriving at the right time because this place gets swamped! Thankfully the line moves quick and people are in and out constantly. The inside of the establishment screams history and is definitely an important places to visit for a blast into the past with great eats. I would definitely like to say that the custom pies are good, but the traditional cheese and Margarita pies are what I would return for time and time again. Exquisite char and cook on the traditional; fantastic flavor and depth in the margarita. Both phenomenal pies worthy of driving 2 hours for. The area sucks and parking is limited, but if you can get past that, the history, style and food is worth indulging in while you're in New Haven. The servers are professionals and make sure to cater to every whim. Definitely a classy pizza spot. VISIT THE TRI-FECTA and make sure to sample Sally's and Frank Pepe's. New Haven is the map because of its rich Italian and food history and the pizza places that bring in millions of people a year are worth trying and keeping alive.
This place was recommended by Adam Richman, from Man vs Food and Dave Portnoy from, "One Bite Pizza Reviews" who both were here in Modern Apizza. So we decided to take a trip and stopped off at Modern Apizza in New Haven for some of their classics. We order the charcoal fired Italian Bomb, a Margarita, And also they accomidated us with a veggi gluten free pizza too. So good! Our waitress was excellent. We were seated right away, and our food came quickly! Place was packed and it was a Wednesday at around lunchtime. I would come back...:)
Excellent pizza! Busy, noisy great vibe! Lots of large parties as well as smaller ones enjoying sharing great food with family & friends!
Modern PIZZA gets an easy five star review I can give it a few more stars but maybe next time. New Haven Pizza is pretty famous and there are a few places around with big names. My favorite part about modern is that only is a pizza absolutely the best but the service is nice... Aiden was a great server the food came fast he came hot. They just crank out that PIZZA nonstop! Love the feel of the place. They're efficient they turn the tables around and serve you fast and make you happy! I've been to the other places I think the one with the girls name comes to mind. I don't think you have to have rude service to make great pizza... modern Pizza is the real deal with real service! You rock modern Pizza!
Modern had been on the bucket-list for a while now, and I was finally able to cross it off. We did take out, to avoid the line outside, during lunch time. It was a beautiful day, so pizza outside sounded like a plan. A small sausage pizza for me, and I must say, I regretted not visiting much earlier. Modern for sure is top 3. Even though this place is busy inside and takeout, the wait is not too long, and worth it. When in New Haven you can't skip Modern, and if you haven't been there yet, don't wait as long as I did.
What a pleasant surprise! My DS picked out this place and I sure am glad! We apparently arrived moments after they opened and there were quite a few people already seated. Our table was in the back area so I was able to look around at the rest of the restaurant as we were seated. We ordered an appetizer caesar salad which was large enough for 3 and was delicious. I am not necessarily a huge fan of thin crust pizza, but am open to trying new things. The crust was not crispy at all... it was chewy and delicious. The sauce was perfect. We ordered a medium which was on the edge of being just enough or not quite large enough for 3 hungry people including a 22 year old athletic man with a large appetite. Turned out it was just enough! When we left there was a line in their entry way and plenty of people waiting outside... and I'm sure it was definitely worth the wait! Fortunately for me my plane was delayed so that we could enjoy this iconic Connecticut pizza place.
- Private parking lot fills up quickly during lunch and likely stays busy throughout the day with a steady stream of diners; we arrived a little after 10:30am on a Saturday (right at opening) and had no wait - Restaurant is quite large, with two dining areas offering plenty of cozy booths and tables, plus a separate section dedicated to takeout orders - Absolutely phenomenal service; staff were warm, genuinely friendly, and attentive throughout our entire meal - Really good pizza--made fresh, generously loaded with toppings, and a thin crust with a nice bite: white clams casino had plenty of chopped clams, though the flavor was a bit overpowered by the bacon; Italian bomb was overflowing with toppings - We were invited to check out the kitchen where the pizza magic happens--such a thoughtful gesture and a fun experience for the kids!
We already know this is the highest level of pizza in the world. I just wish the parking was better! The services is great and quick, the place is buzzing, and the pizza is very hard to not finish. 11/10
Did not disappoint. I had both Modern and Frank Pepe in the same night - give them both a 9/10. Modern I love because it is family owned and has one location. It does New Haven Pizza - and it does it very well. Great service and the Caesar Salad is a great starter.
Good experience, not great pizza... If you're in town looking to try the trinity of New Haven pizza spots, personally, I'd rank this the bottom of the list. I've heard a lot about modern and heard that many prefer it over frank Pepe's or Sally's. Respectfully I can't agree. The staff was great, service was fast, great Ceasar salad and garlic bread, but the pizza had me wanting more. First and foremost, it didn't have ANY solid undercarriage. I think it was too cheesy. It was so floppy my sister said "hey it looks like the pizza from the goofy movie", and she was right. 2 stars for me. It wasn't really memorable. I've had pizzas with better undercarriages, not even New Haven style. The mozerella was overpowering, I could barely taste the sauce.
The pizza was amazing and definitely worth the wait! We tried the clam pizza, artichoke pizza, and pepperoni & sausage, and everything was delicious. The clam pizza was our favorite and is an absolute must-try! A tip for anyone visiting for the first time: if you see people waiting outside, make sure you go in and put your name down! We didn't realize there was a list and thought the line by the door was the line to get a table, so we waited for a while before figuring it out. The restaurant is spacious, the staff was super friendly, and there's street parking nearby. Great pizza, great service, and definitely a place we'd come back to if we're in the area again. read more
Heard so much about New Haven's unique pizza style, so we had to give Modern Apizza a try. We ordered a pepperoni pizza for takeout and waited about 25 minutes. One convenient thing about ordering to go is that there's a side door right by the parking lot, so you can order without having to go inside the restaurant. The pizza itself was good and definitely above average, but it didn't quite live up to the hype for us. The crust was very floppy, and the pizza was extremely greasy. The thin cardboard takeout box didn't help either as the oil soaked straight through, making the whole thing pretty messy to handle. Overall, it's a solid pizza, but nothing that really stood out to us as special or unique. Maybe worth trying if you're exploring New Haven pizza, but personally, I wouldn't wait 25 minutes for it again as we have many better options on nyc. read more

Just returning from a CT pizza tour and Modern took the cake! We literally flew in on a Thursday night, dropped our bags at the hotel, and scooted over to Modern. The wait to get in was maybe 15 minutes as it was already 8 or so. I was so excited to be there that I wanted multiple pies. We got a large mozzarella and a small sausage. Sausage was quite tasty but the mozzarella was simple incredible! The crust has just the right amount of crisp and the cheese is loaded on the delicious tomato sauce. Cannot stop thinking about the most perfect bite of pizza! read more
Oh, Modern. How do I love thee? I love you so much that it's where we chose to have dinner after getting married at city hall 7 years ago! The dough is perfectly chewy with just the right amount of crisp, the char is immaculate, the sauce is divine, and every topping always melds together into something transcendental! They always seem well staffed and their staff is friendly and welcoming. There's a pretty decent amount of seating and it just has that old school pizza joint vibe. As with all the New Haven pizza joints parking isn't perfect, but they do have a small lot and the area itself doesn't feel as congested as some others. As with every other time I have a pizza from Modern, I currently can't stop thinking about it! Can't wait until my next one! read more
I went to Modern for lunch on a rainy Thursday. Success! I got a spot in the parking lot and a table. It was busy but quiet during lunch time. The waiter came shortly after I sat down. I ordered a medium sausage pizza and tap water. My pizza took about 20 minutes to come out. Heaven! Disclosure: I grew up in New Haven and am biased in favor of New Haven pizza. I sat at a booth which was clean and spacious. read more
Finally got to try one of the legends! Was afraid of a long wait but got in at 4pm on a Thursday no wait at all. The host was super friendly to us, gave us a couple of recs. Loved the pizza, THIN sauce/cheese topics loved it, crispy edges how pizza should be. Loved the garlic bread as well and shoutout to them to supporting local with the soda as well. Love to see an old school spot like this staying busy, and everyone loves them! read more

Had a half clam pizza and half eggplant pizza which was good but seemed to lack clams and crust was overcooked. I had it to go so not sure if that played any part. I have had their pizza before and it was a five star. Will try again when back in town. read more

We wanted to eat in but the line was long and the guy taking names said he had no idea how long it would be. Ordered takeout, took 20 minutes and we ate in the car. My teen and his gf ordered Gluten free pizza and asked for it to be well done, it was perfectly crispy and they loved it. I ordered my veggie pizza, subbed artichokes and eggplants for the olives/mushrooms. So many veggies as always. I didn't ask for it crispy but they made it that way and I don't think I'll ever order it differently again. Definitely better without the veggies falling off constantly. Modern is a solid stop in New Haven, don't hesitate to give it a try but be prepared to pivot if there's a line! read more
The best New Haven style pizza! The Tomato Pie was the perfect classic slice, with the sharpness of the pecorino Romano cutting through. We got to the line a little after 12:30pm and waited about 40 minutes, which wasn't too bad considering you can wait indoors. The small pizzas were perfect to share, especially if you're planning to hit other pizza stops nearby. read more
I've enjoyed New Haven-style apizza at both Pepe's and Sally's before, so I was excited to come try Modern. There was definitely a line, but it was shorter than at the other two joints (and also we were able to squeeze into the lobby to wait, so we didn't have to brave the cold) so we opted to eat in. I wasn't exactly blown away by the experience. We ordered the garlic bread with mozzarella, small tossed salad, margherita, eggplant with onions and peppers, and veggie bomb pizzas. The salad was pretty decent with generous dressing, though I would've preferred cheese-less garlic bread. Of the pizzas, the margherita was extraordinarily plain - no tomato toppings and barely any basil. The eggplant was parmesan-esque and extremely fried, which came as a bit of a surprise to me. The veggie bomb was, understandably, the most vegetable-forward and the best pick of the three, but it was clearly lacking salt or seasoning. Everything we ordered was just okay. For the pizzas in particular, the crust was thinner and more burned than expected (compared to apizza at a few other local spots) and was the biggest detractor. read more

There was a wait of about 15 mins to be seated. I got a small Italian bomb($24) and it came out in about 20 mins. The pizza crust was very good! Charred and crispy. Meat was good. Definitely worth the wait to try this coal fired pizza. read more

My family and I enjoyed a meal at Modern Apizza today. One important thing to note is to be prepared to wait in line regardless of the time you arrive. However, this is just a great sign that this is a good spot! We ordered the Clam Pizza which is the main reason for the 5/5 rating. This is such a unique and delicious pie. It is a must try and definitely recommend. We will be sure to come back for more! read more

Had a great experience at Modern Apizza. We got there a little after 11 which was perfect since the lunch rush came in right behind us. The staff was friendly, quick, and really efficient. We ordered a pepperoni and a meatball pizza and both were excellent. The crust was thin and crispy and the pies came out hot, so giving them a minute to cool is a good idea. The pepperoni had great flavor and the meatball slices were tender. The ambiance is classic New Haven pizza shop. Simple and comfortable with booths, wood accents, and the steady buzz of a packed dining room. The brick oven adds to the vibe and gives the place that old school charm. Overall, great service, great pizza, and a spot I'd definitely return to. read more
THE GOOD ---------------- + Fantastic apizza!!! or should I say "ah-beetz"??? ++++ Small Italian Bomb and Small Clams Casino were excellllllent. Both were extremely flavorful, but were on the floppy side, expectedly, because of all of the ingredients sitting on top of them like a casserole...yet they were still verrry crispy on the crust. Will say that for the Clams Casino, the other ingredients (specifically the bacon) kind of overpowered it though, but it was still great. ++++ Small Tossed Salad - Perfect for 2 people and had every simple ingredient I love in a salad - chopped lettuce, onions, olives, tomatoes and LOTS and LOTS of Italian dressing! + Menu consist of many different apizzas, with probably the Italian Bomb, Clams Casino and Potato and Rosemary being amongst the most popular. There is no wrong decision! + Employees were sssssuuuuper duper friendly. Our waitress, who we came to find out was the owner's daughter, was the MOSSSST friendliest server I think we've ever had. She had the biggest smile on her face the entire time and even invited us into the kitchen with our kids! + Restaurant consist of 2 dining rooms with lots of booths and tables inside, but can imagine it getting very crowded during peak dining times. + They sell Modern Apizza-branded merch, including t-shirts. + Private parking lot to the side of the restaurant, which was relatively empty before 11 AM, but was filled by 12 PM. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Nada. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Came in around 10:40 AM on a crisp March Saturday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all at opening, but was surprised to see about 6-7 tables already occupied still ... at 10:40 AM!!! What type of weirdo people, like our family, eat pizza before 11 AM?!?! Definitely got busier by 12 PM when we left, but there were still some open tables. CONCLUSION -------------------- = Modern Apizza definitely has some great, grreaaat pizza AND even better people working there! Not only did the owner's daughter give us a tour of their kitchen, but her brother showed our family the oven where they cooked the pizzas ANNNNNND they hung up our son's drawing of Modern Apizza on their wall! Couldn't have asked for a better experience. read more
Came here around 8 on a Sat night, on the way back home to NJ. Tried to call in a takeout order (multiple times) but they were just not picking up the phone. Decided to gamble and order/ wait at the store. There was a small parking lot with fairly limited parking. Street parking also available. Need to place the Takeout order at the side entrance in parking lot. Pizza takes under 15min so not bad at all. Large pizza (which would feed at least 3) was around $25. Cheese (mozarella) is great... possibly the best cheese pizza I've had. Cheese was delicious, and undercarriage help up nicely. Pepperoni is okay. Nothing special versus other places, and I would not recommend this. Overall its a solid spot. I think suburban locations of other brands such as Pepes are in the same league though (not as convenient), and much more accessible with less crowds/ easier parking. read more
My favorite New Haven pizza spot. There was about a 30 minute wait but it was worth it. Our server was great and really helpful. We traveled to New Haven just for pizza and so glad we stopped here. Pizza came out quick hot and delicious. read more
We finally got to try true New Haven style "apizza" and really loved it! We chose to split two small pies: the Clams Casino and the Italian bomb. We really wanted to try a clam pie with white sauce, next time we should probably try the clam pie only instead of with all of the added extras, but the flavor was delicious. The thin crust was charred, but still light and airy. My personal favorite was the Italian Bomb, I really loved the inclusion of garlic with the traditional supreme toppings. It's also nice that they had some local beers on tap, we really enjoyed the Headway IPA. Also, our leftovers made for an easy, quick breakfast the next day. read more
Brief wait under 10 min just before dinner time; friendly staff and servers; big space inside which gives a neighborhood old school diner-pizza joint vibes. Love their local Pilsner and the local kola they offered (better than coke!). We got the traditional small Muzzo pie. Great crust (not too thick, not too crunchy), nice char, and the ratio of sauce:cheese (cheese dominated, which is my preference!). We inhaled the whole pie. The small pie was enough to share for 2. If I were to note anything about the pie, either the sauce or cheese could've had a bit more salt in it, but I was able to add more grated cheese. I want to come back specifically for the Italian bomb pie! read more
