Between Frank Pepe's and BAR, my friend, a Yale student, prefers the latter, and as a mere tourist, I deferred the decision to her. Man, so glad I did. We arrived on a Monday around peak dinner time, but there was essentially no wait (apparently uncommon according to my friend -- just a delightful consequence of dining at a college town during the summer). We split a medium pizza (1/2 elote mexican street corn and 1/2 bbq brisket), proving to be more than enough for two plus a more than ample amount of leftovers. Recently, I've gravitated toward thinner pizzas, a far cry from the typical Detroit (foccacia-esque) style pizzas I used to prefer, and BAR's pizza is akin to a flatbread yet very thin, another fallen angel to the GLP's. The undercarriage boasts a brilliant crust, almost cracker-like. However, it should be noted that the pizza is indulgent all the same. The elote pizza is quite possibly the most memorable, unique pizza I've ever had; it arrives almost crimson-red with a generous layer of corn and takis atop. It's still incredibly well balanced despite the hodgepodge of varied toppings. It's hard to pick a favorite between this and the bbq brisket though; while one is incredibly unique the other is simply sumptuous, nothing pedestrian about either of the two. The service is also impeccable, almost rivaling that of southern hospitality. I always thought Californians were friendly but something is in the air every time I visit New Haven. Based on a recommendation, four friends and I visited for an earlier dinner on Cinco de Mayo (yes, wrong type of cuisine, but we were in town and this restaurant was on our list.) BAR is an interesting restaurant: open air, picnic tables, open space, paper plates, no utensils unless you ask for them, etc. We were greeted right away by a less than friendly waiter who seemed peeved we didn't have a drink to order right away. Strike one. After a few minutes, everyone put their drink order in and I asked if the bartender could make me a mojito since it wasn't on the menu. The waiter said yes, so I waited. Then came the mojito. It was the worst "mojito" I've tasted in my life. I'm not one to send a drink back because of an "I don't taste any alcohol" excuse, but this was BAD. It tasted like margarita mix with lime and mint sprigs thrown in. It was absolutely terrible. When I double checked with the waiter if the drink was an original mojito he simply said yes, not "is something wrong with the drink?" or "would you like to send it back?" The drink was so bad I told him I couldn't drink it. He was peeved again. Strike two. I asked for a soft drink instead and the soda was flat (strike 3), but at this point I just needed something to drink... because who wants to have water with their pizza? Then came the time to make a dinner choice. My mission was to try the mashed potato pizza. It was hands down AMAZING!! Mashed potatoes and bacon on a pizza. Yes, please!! This was the only saving grace from my experience. I would return to BAR again if only for that pizza! Two of my friends had the clam pizza and the pepperoni/mushroom. Both enjoyed their own! Warming: New Haven pizza is thin crust. I got two meals out of a small, so if you visit with a group, consider ordering a few small pizzas so you can taste a few. I would've given BAR 4 or 5 stars, but the unpleasant waiter, the "mojito," and the flat sofa made for a trifecta, so I'm giving my visit 3 stars. If I find myself in New Haven again, I'll be back! Clams on pizza...this sounded interesting enough to try. So we ventured out to the long venerated (or so I understand) joint (some lady's name Pizza) only to find the line around the block. Clam pizza? Interesting but not that interesting. I had scoured Eater's New Haven section earlier that day and seen BAR mentioned for where to get apizza. We traveled into the quaint-ish New Haven core and parked on the street. Luckily, they had just opened, so we were seated upon arrival. We got two pies: the Clam Casino and the Portrait of New Haven. The PoNH was good. The ricotta was a nice contrast to the sausage and red peppers. The Clam Casino was worth the journey by itself, however. It turns out clams on a pizza is a great idea. Large whole clams and bacon with cherry peppers? Damned right. I wasn't familiar with New Haven brand ("apizza" as I've now been told), but the char on the bottom from the wood-fired oven is crucial at holding some topping combinations to a higher echelon than others (where it deflates others): see the other-worldly good Clam Casino versus this-could-be-better-without Portrait of New Haven. Regardless, the Clam Casino would be a go-to if I lived anywhere near here. The inside is huge. We sat in the main barroom. It was warehousey, but a pool table and picnic tables for large parties gave it a cool vibe. The search for the best pizza in New Haven still rages on with BAR. This is my favorite thus far with creative pies. The white clam casino pie was fantastic with just the perfect amount of crunchiness and giant clams. The thanksgiving pie is interesting with stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey and cranberry sauce. It's such a fun combo for pizzas. The space is huge and beautifully decorated with different theme rooms. My only complaint is that the wait once you place the orders can be quite long. However, it was a Sunday, so I am sure there was a long queue of pizza orders. read more

Always a great time at BAR! I've been here many times, some times just for pizza and other times to dance! This past time I have been here, my partner and I were served by Stevie! He was so kind and attentive, honestly the best server! Out of all the pizzas I've had, I would recommend the bacon mashed potato pizza. It is the most unique/New Haven classic! Out out all the apizza places, BAR has the best potato pizza. I also love their classic margarita. If you want something unique, try the elote apizza. Past 9pm they start charging cover for the night bar. They also start selling pizza by the slice for only $4-$5. Super worth it! Some of the best pizza in the area!! My absolute favorite is their mashed potato and bacon pizza. The crust is so thin (which I love - understand it's not for everyone) so if that's not your taste you might not be as crazy about it. We ordered the small for 3 people and that was plenty. Price is reasonable, place itself is very nice. Staff is not very personable but I assume it's college kids working there so can't expect much. Bar has yet to disapoint me with their unique takes on New Haven Apizza. This time I came in to try the seasonal lobster pie and this may be one of my new favorite pizzas it was so delicious. The buttery garlic base mixed with the cheese and tender lobster was to die for all on the classic new haven thin crust - I am still dreaming of it. I would give BAR 5 stars just for their food, but we unfortunately didn't have the best experience there when we went for lunch yesterday. We went past 1pm and were fortunately seated right away. The atmosphere was cool, with a cozy, industrial Brooklyn vibe, with high ceilings. The pizza trays are so large you do have to squeeze through to get to your table or be seated. We ordered the following to share: - BAR Salad (Bowl) - Thanksgiving Pie (Small) The BAR salad came within several minutes of ordering and was quite large--we ordered a Bowl ($26+), but a Plate ($14.50+) probably would be sufficient for 2 people, if you're also planning to eat pizza. I loved the combination of the seasonal greens, sliced pears, caramelized pecans and crumbled blue cheese with a light vinaigrette dressing. I'm not a huge fan of blue cheese, but this one wasn't overpowering and the other flavors stood out more. The problem was after the salad. After over 20 min, our pizza still hadn't arrived. Our server came by telling us it would be coming "soon." 10 min later, still no pizza. Finally, 45 min after ordering (40 min after our salad), the pizza finally came. Good thing we'd ordered salad--or else, we would've had no food for 45 min. Because it came so late, I ate more salad than I normally would have and could only eat one slice of the pizza. I loved the Thanksgiving pizza and would have had more if it had it not taken so long. The Thanksgiving pizza had mozzarella, hand mashed potatoes, brick oven cooked turkey stuffing, gravy and cranberry. Because their crust is so thin, the pizza wasn't too heavy and the combination of all of the toppings was just right. My boyfriend thought it was too much to put on such a thin crust, but I loved it. They did adjust our bill for us, which made the experience more redeeming. I would like to try other seasonal pies, but maybe just for takeout. read more

Dipping my toes into New Haven Pizza, and I'm not sure this the right place to base my feelings on. My cocktail was Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and while delicious had no rhubarb anything. It was basically a strawberry vanilla cocktail. Poorly named. The pizza...well the margherita pizza was awful. The thickness of the tomato made it impossible to eat. We grabbed our slices (the pizzas are placed on a stand by the table so you have to reach over and slide them onto your plate. No utensils to help) and all the toppings slid off. It was not due to them being too hot, but the weight of the tomatoes and how much water they produced made the pizza sloppy and wet. The sauce was watery as a result of the tomato as well. Overall avoid this pizza as much as possible. The buffalo chicken pizza was better. These toppings managed to stay on the pizza. But the thinness of the crust just isn't conducive to the amount of toppings you get. The chicken and the bleu cheese was good, the olives and jalapeño added a nice kick. But I wouldn't come back just for this pizza. The vibe is cool I guess. It's right next to a frat house, empty kegs and trash outside to match. read more

We put our name down for a table but realized the bar to the left also serves food, so we were able to snag a couple seats and eat a lot quicker. Did you know New Haven, CT is considered the pizza capital of the US? I didn't either and enjoyed amazing Pizza at Bar in New Haven. I was flying back home from the New Haven airport to FL after visiting friends in Bridgeport and wanted to try a cool place before my flight. I decided to check this place out after seeing they have pizza with mashed potatoes and I was intrigued. They have pizzas with white sauce or red sauce. If you want to do separate toppings on each half, you just have to do the same sauce throughout, of course. We ended up getting half of the mashed potato & bacon and half clam casino - both are a specialty pizza on their menu with white sauce. I LOVED the pizza. The thin crust was nice and crunchy. The white sauce had just the right hint of garlic to complement the other toppings. We sat at the bar and our server was attentive. My husband wanted a Red Bull and they do not have this. They also didn't have coffee (although they have an espresso martini on the menu). I also later learned they have house made beers, which it would have been nice to have heard about this while we were there. Outside of those few things, the place is awesome and I hope to return. What a stunning location and lots of gorgeous spots to sit in inside and out. The beer was on point and the pizza was really, really good. I made my own white sauce with mozzarella, broccoli and sausage. Reminded me of college days in CNY, but the crust was better. The only issue - and it is worth noting - was the service I got from the sole bartender manning the right right side (as you walk in). Was clearly annoyed with every question I asked, firing back pat annoyed answers before the words were out of my mouth. No eye contact, zero interest in my experience there. It's not even that she was busy. I talked to mgr Steve after leaving no tip, and he was sympathetic. I said I get it, everyone has a bad day, and having worked in this industry for Years I know how you can get burned out. But if you can't even fake interest in a customer's experience no place they're probably never been in before I come again, or maybe you should not be working in this industry. It's not even an East Coast thing, I lived here for years and went to two places after that were at least the servers could fake a modicum of interest in my experience at the place, which is all we freaking really want. Yes, we are paying for the food and we are paying for the experience and we're paying for gracious service. I'm not looking for an obsequious behavior, but some basic geniality would be nice. The barteneder was super nice and very attentive. The restaurant side was quite small, with very little seating. Some coworkers of mine went to grab a pie and some drinks after work, and the place was packed. At night it turns into a like a club which made for a very loud atmosphere where it was difficult to have a conversation. Ultimately, the food was on point, and the watermelon beer they had on tap was so refreshing. They have one salad and it was quite the salad - plenty to share and bold with flavor. The mashed potato and bacon pizza at BAR is one of my favorite things to eat in all of New Haven, and it's just as good as it was the first time I had it decades ago. My kid tried it for the first time this year and absolutely loved it, so hopefully there will be many more mashed potato and bacon pizzas in our future. I've had other pizzas here which are also good, but the mashed potato and bacon is my go-to. They do half/split pies as well, so it's a good way to try more than one type if you're a smaller group. I recently had the pleasure of taking a mini tour around New Haven with a friend, testing a variety of the finest apizza establishments around the city. This was the second stop on our quest. I had looked around and heard from my friend that the mashed potato and bacon was the pièce de resistance here. So we ventured out in the rainy weather to try it. Staff was kind and prompt, and made sure we were taken care of. This pie is probably some of the best I've tasted in my life, and having lived in NY/NJ, I've had some goooodd slices in my life. The salt and umami + the cheese combo is just A plus. And the crust is perfectly charred and thin. I paired it with the BAR lager which was the perfect beer to go with the pizza. Compliments to the individual who came up with this. Additionally, the interior is stunning - large windows, moody lighting with lots of wooden accents, fermentation vessels and a lovely painting above the bar on the other room.
