    Italian Bomb
    Menghai T.

There was a wait of about 15 mins to be seated. I got a small Italian bomb($24) and it came out in about 20 mins. The pizza crust was very good! Charred and crispy. Meat was good. Definitely worth the wait to try this coal fired pizza.

    - Private parking lot fills up quickly during lunch and likely stays busy throughout the day with a steady stream of diners; we arrived a little after 10:30am on a Saturday (right at opening) and had no wait - Restaurant is quite large, with two dining areas offering plenty of cozy booths and tables, plus a separate section dedicated to takeout orders - Absolutely phenomenal service; staff were warm, genuinely friendly, and attentive throughout our entire meal - Really good pizza--made fresh, generously loaded with toppings, and a thin crust with a nice bite: white clams casino had plenty of chopped clams, though the flavor was a bit overpowered by the bacon; Italian bomb was overflowing with toppings - We were invited to check out the kitchen where the pizza magic happens--such a thoughtful gesture and a fun experience for the kids!

Good experience, not great pizza... If you're in town looking to try the trinity of New Haven pizza spots, personally, I'd rank this the bottom of the list. I've heard a lot about modern and heard that many prefer it over frank Pepe's or Sally's. Respectfully I can't agree. The staff was great, service was fast, great Ceasar salad and garlic bread, but the pizza had me wanting more. First and foremost, it didn't have ANY solid undercarriage. I think it was too cheesy. It was so floppy my sister said "hey it looks like the pizza from the goofy movie", and she was right. 2 stars for me. It wasn't really memorable. I've had pizzas with better undercarriages, not even New Haven style. The mozerella was overpowering, I could barely taste the sauce.

Great service and pizza! My friend and I wanted to try different pizzas on the menu but weren't hungry so our waiter suggested we pick a different flavor for each quarter of the pie. We tried Italian bomb, plain, artichoke, and eggplant - everything was so so good. Our favorites were plain and artichoke. Line goes quickly. Highly recommend!

Just returning from a CT pizza tour and Modern took the cake! We literally flew in on a Thursday night, dropped our bags at the hotel, and scooted over to Modern. The wait to get in was maybe 15 minutes as it was already 8 or so. I was so excited to be there that I wanted multiple pies. We got a large mozzarella and a small sausage. Sausage was quite tasty but the mozzarella was simple incredible! The crust has just the right amount of crisp and the cheese is loaded on the delicious tomato sauce. Cannot stop thinking about the most perfect bite of pizza!

Oh, Modern. How do I love thee? I love you so much that it's where we chose to have dinner after getting married at city hall 7 years ago! The dough is perfectly chewy with just the right amount of crisp, the char is immaculate, the sauce is divine, and every topping always melds together into something transcendental! They always seem well staffed and their staff is friendly and welcoming. There's a pretty decent amount of seating and it just has that old school pizza joint vibe. As with all the New Haven pizza joints parking isn't perfect, but they do have a small lot and the area itself doesn't feel as congested as some others. As with every other time I have a pizza from Modern, I currently can't stop thinking about it! Can't wait until my next one!

THE GOOD ---------------- + Fantastic apizza!!! or should I say "ah-beetz"??? ++++ Small Italian Bomb and Small Clams Casino were excellllllent. Both were extremely flavorful, but were on the floppy side, expectedly, because of all of the ingredients sitting on top of them like a casserole...yet they were still verrry crispy on the crust. Will say that for the Clams Casino, the other ingredients (specifically the bacon) kind of overpowered it though, but it was still great. ++++ Small Tossed Salad - Perfect for 2 people and had every simple ingredient I love in a salad - chopped lettuce, onions, olives, tomatoes and LOTS and LOTS of Italian dressing! + Menu consist of many different apizzas, with probably the Italian Bomb, Clams Casino and Potato and Rosemary being amongst the most popular. There is no wrong decision! + Employees were sssssuuuuper duper friendly. Our waitress, who we came to find out was the owner's daughter, was the MOSSSST friendliest server I think we've ever had. She had the biggest smile on her face the entire time and even invited us into the kitchen with our kids! + Restaurant consist of 2 dining rooms with lots of booths and tables inside, but can imagine it getting very crowded during peak dining times. + They sell Modern Apizza-branded merch, including t-shirts. + Private parking lot to the side of the restaurant, which was relatively empty before 11 AM, but was filled by 12 PM. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Nada. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Came in around 10:40 AM on a crisp March Saturday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all at opening, but was surprised to see about 6-7 tables already occupied still ... at 10:40 AM!!! What type of weirdo people, like our family, eat pizza before 11 AM?!?! Definitely got busier by 12 PM when we left, but there were still some open tables. CONCLUSION -------------------- = Modern Apizza definitely has some great, grreaaat pizza AND even better people working there! Not only did the owner's daughter give us a tour of their kitchen, but her brother showed our family the oven where they cooked the pizzas ANNNNNND they hung up our son's drawing of Modern Apizza on their wall! Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

We wanted to eat in but the line was long and the guy taking names said he had no idea how long it would be. Ordered takeout, took 20 minutes and we ate in the car. My teen and his gf ordered Gluten free pizza and asked for it to be well done, it was perfectly crispy and they loved it. I ordered my veggie pizza, subbed artichokes and eggplants for the olives/mushrooms. So many veggies as always. I didn't ask for it crispy but they made it that way and I don't think I'll ever order it differently again. Definitely better without the veggies falling off constantly. Modern is a solid stop in New Haven, don't hesitate to give it a try but be prepared to pivot if there's a line!

The best New Haven style pizza! The Tomato Pie was the perfect classic slice, with the sharpness of the pecorino Romano cutting through. We got to the line a little after 12:30pm and waited about 40 minutes, which wasn't too bad considering you can wait indoors. The small pizzas were perfect to share, especially if you're planning to hit other pizza stops nearby.

I've enjoyed New Haven-style apizza at both Pepe's and Sally's before, so I was excited to come try Modern. There was definitely a line, but it was shorter than at the other two joints (and also we were able to squeeze into the lobby to wait, so we didn't have to brave the cold) so we opted to eat in. I wasn't exactly blown away by the experience. We ordered the garlic bread with mozzarella, small tossed salad, margherita, eggplant with onions and peppers, and veggie bomb pizzas. The salad was pretty decent with generous dressing, though I would've preferred cheese-less garlic bread. Of the pizzas, the margherita was extraordinarily plain - no tomato toppings and barely any basil. The eggplant was parmesan-esque and extremely fried, which came as a bit of a surprise to me. The veggie bomb was, understandably, the most vegetable-forward and the best pick of the three, but it was clearly lacking salt or seasoning. Everything we ordered was just okay. For the pizzas in particular, the crust was thinner and more burned than expected (compared to apizza at a few other local spots) and was the biggest detractor.

My brother-in-law recommended me to try Modern since I tried Frank Pepe last time when I was in town. My husband and I came here around 11:30am and we did not have to wait. I thought the restaurant would be very small inside, but you can actually fit quite a decent amount of people in there. Apparently you go in one way and go out the other way, but we didn't know that until we exited the same way we entered. The only pizza I get when I am in New Haven is the clam pizza. The clam pizza definitely hit the spot for me since I'm only in town once a year, but I thought this place was a too salty compared to Frank Pepe. I think at this point it's probably just personal preference depending on which restaurant you would prefer New Haven style pizza from. Overall, I had a good experience here but not sure if I'll return because I was hoping for something that would WOW me.

Lives up to the hype. You have to order a whole pizza at minimum because they are cooked fresh to order, and so I'd recommend visiting with a group in order to sample more pies. I got a small mootz with sausage, and it was perfectly cooked with the right amount of char. The vibe is surprisingly down-to-earth despite the sterling reputation, it felt like a 90s-style family restaurant with a cozy interior and friendly staff. Bill came out to about $20 for a small pizza, before tip.

My family and I enjoyed a meal at Modern Apizza today. One important thing to note is to be prepared to wait in line regardless of the time you arrive. However, this is just a great sign that this is a good spot! We ordered the Clam Pizza which is the main reason for the 5/5 rating. This is such a unique and delicious pie. It is a must try and definitely recommend. We will be sure to come back for more!

I had scoured Eater's New Haven section earlier that day and seen BAR mentioned for where to get apizza. We traveled into the quaint-ish New Haven core and parked on the street. Luckily, they had just opened, so we were seated upon arrival. We got two pies: the Clam Casino and the Portrait of New Haven. The PoNH was good. The ricotta was a nice contrast to the sausage and red peppers. The Clam Casino was worth the journey by itself, however. It turns out clams on a pizza is a great idea. Large whole clams and bacon with cherry peppers? Damned right. I wasn't familiar with New Haven brand ("apizza" as I've now been told), but the char on the bottom from the wood-fired oven is crucial at holding some topping combinations to a higher echelon than others (where it deflates others): see the other-worldly good Clam Casino versus this-could-be-better-without Portrait of New Haven. Regardless, the Clam Casino would be a go-to if I lived anywhere near here. The inside is huge. We sat in the main barroom. It was warehousey, but a pool table and picnic tables for large parties gave it a cool vibe. I enjoyed watching the bar staff have to hunch under the bar opening, which doesn't hinge up, as we waited for our discs 'o dough.

This place is small, unapologetic, and full of character. Decorative firewood stacked with intention, walls filled with wine corks, and #10 tomato cans repurposed as pizza stands. Walk in and you immediately catch the vibe, exposed brick, distressed plaster, a slightly industrial, almost factory-style feel that somehow still feels warm and welcoming. The centerpiece of the room is the wood-fired oven, running hot and glowing with that perfect orange flame. The aroma of burning wood hits you right away and sets the tone. From that moment on, the culinary experience is in motion. We ordered The Mootz and Breaking My Meatballs. Both pies are built on a very thin, tender crust with beautiful leoparding. The dough is flavorful and clearly well-fermented. Sauce is applied with restraint, just enough to support the dough and cheese without overpowering them, and it delivers a clean, bright tomato flavor. Breaking My Meatballs was the standout. Homemade meatballs, herbed ricotta, cherry peppers, mozzarella, and that same balanced sauce. The cherry peppers bring a sharp vinegar tang that cuts perfectly through the richness of the ricotta and meatballs. Every bite hits a different note, and it all works together. Easily one of my favorites. The crust across the board was thin and tender with a delicate smoky char from the wood fire, exactly what you want from this style. Bottom line: Great spot. Kwok has more than 20 years experience in the hospitality industry. Some of the other restaurants he has opened include Sweet Basil in Fairfield, Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Cafe in Westport, and Eat Noodle in Bridgeport. Kwok and Nguyen's latest venture opened at the Connecticut Post Mall in a restaurant space that was previously home to Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar, which specialized in tavern-style pizzas cooked in a cast-iron skillet. 8 Thousand Pizza offers this same style of pizza, but what sets them apart from the previous pizzeria is that they also offer self-pouring technology, which became legalized in Connecticut in 2021. The food menu features two dozen tavern-style pizzas as well as burgers, wings, fries, salads and soups. Through the use of a supplied electronic bracelet, customers can self-pour their own beverage from a selection of 28 craft beer taps and 6 wine taps. There's a two-pint or 32-ounce limit for the self-pours. I recently visited 8 Thousand Pizza for dinner. I had previously visited the space when it was Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar and was sad to hear that they moved. However, this new business concept of a tavern-style pizzeria with self-pouring taps sounded very interesting to me. This was actually my first visit to a self-pouring taproom, as these types of establishments only just began opening in the state in the last few years. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the "Grandma's Tomato Pizza" (fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, roasted garlic, tomatoes and EVOO) and the "Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza" (tomato sauce, pepperoni, hot honey sauce and mozzarella cheese). The latter happens to be 8 Thousand's signature pizza. Both pizzas had crust so thin that it's almost cracker like; they didn't flop at all. They were super crispy with excellent sauce and toppings. I honestly can't decide which one I liked better; they were both very good. During my visit, I enjoyed some self-pours of Grey Sail Brewing's "Captain's Daughter" (Double New England IPA) and New Park Brewing's "Cloudscape" (American IPA). Delicious pizza with craft beer is always an excellent pairing! I had a really nice experience at 8 Thousand Pizza and I hope to return with my family.

She became involved with working with a different person to check the sound system. Over the course of about 10 minutes, they frequently changed the volume and what was playing on the stereo. A nice restaurant like Rawa should not put a customer in the position of having to advocate for a reasonable atmosphere. I just saw Instagram content that leads me to believe that Rawa is going in a new creative direction. The event manager spoke of upcoming events like a yoga experience and a couple of other things. I'm sure there will be people who may enjoy this new direction, but that's not what I've enjoyed about Rawa in my prior visits. In any event, if you go to Rawa, you should be aware that it may not be how you remember. I'm downgrading my rating to 3 Stars in light of my experience.
