True Score - 4.25 Stars Great pizza, not much else. Yup that's right.... nothing but pizza here. Real pizza, handmade dough, 130+ year old coal fired oven -- what more do you need? My wife and I traveled the 90+ miles from home just for this pizza. It's not "New Haven-style" thin crust (although they do offer that as an option, as well as extra thick and even gluten-free) but it's a style all its' own. Not bready, never soggy, nice crunch and yes, sometimes there are spots of char. That's what a great pizza from a real pizza oven is supposed to have. If you're used to Domino's and Pizza Hut, keep going. If you're looking for glitz and kitsch and syrupy sweet serving staff, keep going. If you're looking for a roomy, dimly-lit, romantic dining room, keep going. If you're looking for a great pizza, it's worth the trip from just about anywhere. Thursday - Sunday you definitely need to call ahead. Sometimes the phone just keeps ringing -- yes, it's THAT busy. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. TIP: Cash only Thanks

As a ct native this is one of the best pizza CT has to offer. Consistently amazing quality. I always get a cheese pizza. The cheese and sauce is very flavorful and the crust is thin and crispy. I think it's underrated compared to Sally's and frank Pepe's. The crust is my favorite part of the pizza it's so crispy and not soggy at all which is my favorite part of the pizza. They only accept cash and call ahead is highly recommended.

We got a large pepperoni pizza. Pizza crust didn't have much flavor but otherwise good. Thin crust pizza. Only 6 booths inside the restaurant. We ordered pick up, wait is longer on the weekends (1 hour wait) No slices or other sides. Pizza only, not other food offered! Cold beverages available; Foxon park sodas CASH ONLY.

Plain w meatball half, clam (the best!!!)

Will admit my husband and I came here bc of the Portnoy review -- but boy does the place stand up to it. INCREDIBLE PIZZA, point blank, and the best New Haven-style we've had yet (I said what I said!!). The clam in particular is a thing of beauty, absolutely perfect flavors, lots of clams, great with the little bit of bacon and altar right amount of garlic. Obey all the in your face signs and order at least two hours before you want your pizza and the guys will be super nice to you If you have to wait, watch the free entertainment of the pizzas being made in the giant ancient coal oven right before your eyes. Prices are incredibly reasonable, Foxon Parks in the fridge...In short: new favorite!!

Going to this old school restaurant I felt like I traveled back in time. Pizza here is made in their 120 year old coal fired brick oven. At this cash only restaurant they only sell pizza, they don't sell pizza by the slice, beverage choices are water, and soda, and order early because wait time can be over 1 or 2 hours. There is a seating area but I think most of the business is take out, and do have a ATM machine. I ordered a large mozz and bacon pizza. Their large is only 16". The crust was like cardboard, dry, and tasteless. The bacon was mostly little pieces and added no flavor to the pizza. I would not compare this to New Haven style pizza. It was more like frozen grocery store pizza.

This little gem is a must visit when trying the historic/popular pizza places in Connecticut. I'm glad I finally made it here. It is cash only so keep that in mind. Such an unassuming place but walking in, you can see and feel the history. Love that. I got a plain cheese pizza and it was pretty good.. I would return to try more!

After trying Sally's in New Haven and driving to Ted's Restaurant in Meriden for steamed cheeseburgers, we decided to try this place as well, which was only 5 minutes away. It was also on Dave Portnoy's one bite pizza review where he rated them a 9.1 :) I called in my order for a pie with half plain cheese and half pepperoni. They quoted me 1 hour and it was completed right on time as promised. Since it's located in a residential part, there was plenty of street parking. The pizza takes so long bc there's only 1 guy (owner?) making the pizzas I believe, and they have a lot of orders (expect to wait 1 to 3+ hours), but the taste is well worth the wait. The pizza was thin, cheesy, and had an extra crunchy crust with a unique sauce that's hard to describe. One small complaint was that the pizza was very greasy- more grease than we liked, but that was it. HOT: don't get burnt. Everything else reminded us of the New Haven style, which we agree that Connecticut does have the best pizza. Rendezvous (raan-day-voo) is definitely worth trying if you're in the area. FYI: cash only and call ahead (as early as possible) to place your order.

So happy I finally got to try this pizza place! We ordered a large pepperoni pizza on Saturday night. The wait was about one hour but the pizza was well worth it. Definitely some of the best pizza I have had in a while. Crust is thin and crunchy. This Restaurant is cash only and only sells pizza but They don't sell slices ! Can't forgot the mention that they have a 130 year old coal fired brick oven! It's a hidden gem !

Highly rated by Portnoy- my husband asked that we make the stop on our way to the city. Of course! I want to try this highly rated pizza too. The place is old school. We pull up and the house next door looks like they thinks aliens are coming to town. Run down and quirky. On street parking. Inside, not sure the last time they did an update. The tables are super basic wobbly wood with a lot of distress from probably many a set of people feasting on them in the past. Ordering is old school. Nice folks working here. Covered in flour and using old school methods of separating dough in wood boxes and a totally exposed kitchen which was pretty cool. There was some dust in corners and just basic. I would equate this to a dive bar of pizza places. BUT I can share the bathroom was not trashy- it felt more modern than the rest of the place but when I say modern it was maybe 2010 when the rest of the place might have been 1989. (I was hoping for a crappy bathroom for my husband who just loves dives.) The pizza- warning: there is a sign posted that at some points there could be a 3 hour wait! We were there right when they opened so no long wait. We got a bacon pizza and a pepperoni pizza. My husband went down the street and bought a beer and a wine cooler( for me)- the employees at Rendezvous suggested it. The pizza had no flop- impressive. But it feel flat on flavor for me. The next day I had John on Bleecker in the city and that's when I realized LR needed some flavor! There is no comparison.

Real hole-in-the-wall, no-frills, cash-only pizza joint where there are no food options other than pizza Have a few barebones tables, but there is negative atmosphere to the place The oven they use to bake their pizza is over 130 years old Call in your pizza ahead of time, especially on the weekends, as the place has gotten incredibly busy since they got a good review from Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports The pizza here is very unique as it has a hard but chewy bottom/underbelly that holds everything, but crunchy crust on top. The sauce has a great flavor to it, but overall this is not may favorite style of pizza.

After all the hype, a lot of it generated by "Dave" of Barstool Sports, it made it's way to my food bucket list. I recently went w Demanding Dan. The pizzeria is located in a nondescript, ramshackle type of building that's seen better days. Coal-fired oven over 120 years old. Some of the best pizza I've ever inhaled has come out of places like this. But, not from The Little Rendezvous. DD agreed. Good, not great. Opens at 1, five days per week. Cash only. No slices. Expect long wait times, sometimes as much as two hours. None of this factored into my rating. Yes, we waited almost an hour. The phone rang often. Two employees. The owner and capable assistant. The owner is extremely hardworking, and seems to take great pride in creating each pie. In my opinion, the wait time would be shortened if he allowed another person to create pies. He's kind of a bottleneck in the production line. Again, my rating doesn't reflect that. The pizza itself (small w sausage and peppers) was almost burnt (although the undercarriage was clean). The cheese was overcooked, as were most of the pies we saw come out of the oven. Additionally, I didn't see nor taste any sausage. When I spoke to the assistant, he said they use "crumbled sausage". Again, didn't see or taste it, but wasn't going to argue. Small seating area. Reasonable prices. Disagree w all the hype. 3.5 stars.

They are the real pizza deal. They take cash only. It is like a pizza truck in a house. Got to visit them for the experience.

They do advertise for combo deal's, slices, $1 wings. Angelina's is directly across the street from Hubbard Park too. I'd assume people grab and go to the park. We ordered a simple cheese pizza and a chicken cutlet sandwich. The pizza was fresh, melty cheese with tasty Italian spices and perfectly cooked crust, but wasn't anything special. There are many other pizzerias in the area so it comes down personal preference and price. The chicken cutlet sandwich was a decent size and delicious. We were happy with the portion sizes, quality, and price. Our total was about $23 and we had leftovers (this was for 2 people). We will likely order again and will think of this place if we plan to have pizza for a gathering.

On a recent Saturday I finally stopped in for their $6.50, 2 slice pizza deal that comes with a 20 ounce Coke. The pizza is New Haven style and baked in a wood fired oven, need I say more? The slices were delicious and likely the best in the immediate area so I will be returning in the not too distant future. One word of caution - be prepared to pay an additional 4% over menu prices if you choose to pay by credit card.

I've been to this little pizza shop twice now…read more My first visit was made after a long day when my friend and I were hungry and hoping to find good local pizza nearby. I'd driven pass Empire Pizza many times but this would be my first experience easting there. We ordered a large pizza with mushrooms and peppers, asking for the pizza to be made "light on the cheese" and the order was a pleasant surprise for both of us. I rate that experience slightly above average, 3.5 stars and determined that I'd visit again in the future. The second visit was with my uncle who had visited to help with some repairs and a pizza reward seemed appropriate. Our order was also mushrooms and peppers, but I didn't ask for any alteration to the cheese volume since I knew that my uncle would prefer more cheese and he had made the trip just to help me so I decided to see how this pizza would rate. Sadly, I found the pizza less exciting overall, barely average. BTW, the pizza isn't New Haven style pizza and is more of a local variation on NYC style pizza (which I prefer over New Haven style pizza). Based on the two visits I'd rate Empire Pizza three stars overall, IOW average. There's nothing wrong with average pizza, so this isn't intended as a slight in any way.
