I have to admit, I was skeptical when I first heard that pizza was "a thing" in New Haven. I had never heard of New Haven style pizza, and certainly didn't expect it to wow me. And now here I am asking all my friends "Did you know New Haven has some of the best pizza?!" I ordered via Uber Eats with delivery to my hotel. They messed up the delivery, so unfortunately the pizza wasn't piping hot once I finally found it. However, it didn't need to be. The flavor was a masterpiece! It was spicy, with just the right amount of cheese and sauce. The sauce was not the tangy cheap-tasting sauce that I sometimes stumble upon so I was happy about that. The crust was not hard, but not soft. I was pleasantly surprised that it had so much flavor, yet was not at all greasy. Every time I drive back down from my travels up the north, I stopover here at Next Door. For good reason, it's not just the pizza but everything here is great. Of course the pizza is awesome, it's what they are known for but the dam the Penne ala vodka is incredible! Brussels roots awesome! The garlic knots are so addictive! The mashed potato and Margharita pies are my favorite. The White Clam isn't the best but a good option as well. I went to Next Door in New Haven earlier this year. It had been on my Try List for a while. I ordered a first ever pizza for me for takeout. I call it the "BaeBae". Bacon and Basil. Kind of like an herbier BLT. It was perfect. Good char. Simply delicious red sauce. So terrific, the BaeBae inspired the following Hot Take . . . The night we went it was rainy. It was not a really big deal because the parking is very manageable - especially considering it's New Haven. We ordered some pizza, chicken wings and dessert. The food was AMAZING. Super fresh, very tasty and presentation was perfect. We literally ate everything. The only thing I snapped a photo of was my dessert. The wait staff were very kind. So the ambiance is fantastic with comfortable seating and a relaxed vibe. The service is top notch. Our server was very friendly and the food came out super fast. My espresso martini was incredible. Honestly crushed! Found out they were closing 2 weeks ago and we came last weekend and dined in and came for take out just now and on both occasions, complete debacle! Dine in experience the service at the bar from Jose was probably one of the worst experiences ever and the food matched it as the pies were undercooked and we never had the chance to say anything as Jose couldn't understand hand signals or stares of help! Our pick up experience their last weekend was even more so disappointing. 2/3 pies were dry and the third pie was undercooked. Called them to let them know immediately and the girl who picked up with a slight accent never apologized nor did she even let us speak to manager or offer to even remake the one pie I really complained about which was the New Haven Pie. Excellent neighborhood pizza joint with a separate smallish bar area that gets busy when university is in session. We appreciate that Dining room tables aren't on top of one another here. We also appreciate that Next Door has more than just quality pizza, in fact their apps & salads are fresh & interesting & are at a nice portion size for sharing. All of the pies made here have a wonderful chewy crust & great sauce. Next Door is so much more then a pizza restaurant. We went there to try their great New Haven style thin crust pizza. We ordered a half mushroom, half sausage, mozz pizza. It was absolutely delicious, and perfectly cooked. But they also serve great appetizers, soups, stews, entrées, and sandwiches. They also make all their desserts on the premises. Just tried Next Door for the first time this month and it was so good! New Haven Style Apizza was on point - we had the Mashed Potato and the Fresh Mozzarella. The crust and toppings were all perfect. They also have gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options. We tried the Penne Alla Vodka, which was delicious. The sauce was great, and excellent portion size. For a starter we had the Housemade Meatballs, which were very good. If you're a salad lover or want a side with your pizza the Winter Berry Salad was a great choice. If you saved room for dessert go for the Ice Cream Sammie, you won't be disappointed! Every time I go to Next Door, I'm surprised at how good it is. You'd think eventually I'd remember for the next time, but somehow I always forget. We have ordered many things here. Next Door is a New Haven-style pizzeria that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in November 2018. It was founded by partners Doug Coffin, Robin Bodak and Domenic Giannotti. Coffin had originally founded and run 'Big Green Truck Pizza' (a fleet of green mobile wood-fired pizza oven trucks) in 2003. The fleet of trucks are stored inside a building at 530 East Street. Right next store is a building that housed Humphrey's East Restaurant for several years. Eventually Coffin and his business partners decided to acquire the building themselves and open a brick & mortar version of Big Green Pizza. Since the building was next door to where their pizza trucks were stored, it was decided to name the new venture 'Next Door'. My wife and I have visited and ordered takeout from Next Door several times. It is one of our favorite local pizzerias. Our most recent visit was last week for my job's Holiday Party. We had a seemingly endless amount of pies coming out for the the party. Some of the delicious pizzas included "New Haven Plain" (tomato sauce, Pecorino Romano, EVOO, oregano, fresh garlic), "Plain Cheese", "Fresh Mozzarella", "Buffalo Chicken", "Spicy Meatball", "Vinnie's Veggie Pie" (mozzarella, seasoned kale, caramelized onions, mushroom, gorgonzola), "Barbecue Chicken", "White Broccoli", and "Bacon & Onion". Everything was spectacular as always. The party was also served some salad, wings, garlic knots, and gelato for dessert. In addition to their great food, Next Door also has an excellent selection of craft beer and craft cocktails. I ordered a draught pour of Hooker Brewing's "#NoFilter" (New England IPA) and later on I had a glass of their "Holiday Nog" (eggnog spiked with rum). Let me begin by saying next door had been a staple in my list of restaurants I loved going to when I first moved back to New Haven and my daughter was young and every staff person was nice and respectful and it was a great place to be. Tonight left a horrible taste in my mouth. Nicole my server, was extremely nice. She was attentive and friendly and personable. I would visit again just for her. Let me tell you who was awful and does not need to be a bartender anywhere. Tessa is the bartender who made my old fashioned incorrectly and slammed my glass on the table and stormed off. And when questioned about it, she feigned ignorance and indifference. I requested that she not make another drink for me. And the drink she made matched her disposition and attitude: awful. I sent it back to have Nicole make it. My question is why hire someone so inexperienced and unfriendly and unfit for a job as a bartender? She was sour and unpleasant and unprofessional. The vibe is "perfect neighborhood", roomy enough but still cozy. We sat at a high top table in the bar, enough buzz to be lively but quiet enough to hear each other. Wow! Absolutely impressed with Next Door! We're already big fans of Big Green Pizza Truck so we definitely had high expectations for their brick & mortar location, literally next door. See what they did there? We came on a Friday night and had a couple gift cards to spend. It was pretty quiet, especially compared to other New Haven Apizza hot spots, so we were seated right away. They have a full bar and cocktail menu with really good prces! The staff was super friendly and the owner even came out to chat with us. Very cool! We ordered 3 pies but definitely was hard to decide on these 3. We went with the Fresh Tomato Pie (a summer special and the groups #1 favorite), Bacon & Brussels, and Sausage & Broccoli Rabe. All of them were absolutely incredible!!! Classic New Haven and just as good as some of our other local faves. The prices were pretty good too. Nice place! One good thing to note for being in New Haven is that there is a small parking lot! It's a very interesting space. A bar in the front and in the back with tables in the middle. Our server was friendly and helpful. We couldn't decide between two pizzas so she suggested get them both! Half on one side half on the other. The best of both worlds. We got the honey Brussels sprout with bacon and ricotta and half mashed potato, bacon and caramelized onions. Both were good. We liked the Brussels sprout half better. We had the meatball app too. Sunday I was able to attend the Next Door Pizza Party! What a wonderful event. The Next Door is the Big Green Truck Pizza. This place is filled with so much history and love. They have a Beautiful spacious room to have events and parties. It's also a family restaurant. Everyone is so Nice and welcoming! I was honored to meet Doug the owner along with some of his wonderful staff (Maria, Stacy and the bartender). All kinds of pizzas were put out and they all Looked delicious. I have to say my Gluten-free pizza was the best ! The best I had. It was excellent and full Of flavor!! The drinks were delicious and refreshing as well. I've been hearing so many awesome things about Next Door in New Haven so I was super excited to finally try it out a few weeks ago! We got to meet the owner Doug, who was such a joy and so passionate about his business! He founded and ran the Big Green Truck Pizza for 17 years before opening up Next Door in 2018. We started out with the Spicy Margarita to drink and Garlic Knots which were so warm, fresh and flavorful! Next we tried the Chili Verde with white beans, tomatillos, green chilies and pork! I loved that this warm and cozy chili had such unique flavors and wasn't just your average chili with ground beef. We embraced #teamskinny and tried out the Winter Berry Salad with romaine, Arugula, endive with pears, pecans, raspberries, blackberries and goat cheese in a cider and walnut oil vinaigrette! I loved all the flavors going on in this refreshing salad. Anything with berries and goat cheese is a winner to me! And finally, for the pizza, we tried the Honey Brussels Bacon pizza with oven roasted Brussels sprouts, spicy honey, bacon and ricotta! The flavor combo on that pie was phenomenal. We also ordered a Pepperoni Pizza which is my favorite classic that they did just right! For dessert, we devoured the Strawberry Shortcake with house-made biscuits, whipped cream and strawberries!
