I don't care about the service as I was ready for the crappy RBF service. This is strictly about the food. I order 8 items and it was the worst Chinese food I have ever ate in the entire Bay Area. I ordered the Dried Beef Chow Fun, Shrimp Chow mein, Mongolian Beef, and other items and it was so bad. The Dried Beef Chow Fun smell was rotten and it tasted spoiled. I had to throw it away it was that bad. The Chowmein they used crappy cheap noodles, not even the typical egg noodle for chowmein. The Mongolian Beef tasted so disgusting and they put Cumin spices in it. Which you normally do not add cumin spices to Mongolian Beef. And the other items I ordered were pretty bad as well. This review will be too long if I go through each one. But trust me. It is really bad. If I'm going to pay $15-$20 per item. I would rather go somewhere else. I highly suggest no one ever come here. I used to be their customer long time ago. Their food is okay, but it seems like most of the selling foods is not made by their owned; such as soy bean drink... etc. (豆漿，豆腐，豆製品等）. *****Customer Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic***** Situated next to the Milpitas Lion Supermarket, New China Foods offers a wide array of freshly made soy products, smoked and braised meats, and cook to order food. They used to have a sit-down restaurant in San Ramon a decade or so ago and it was my family's go-to takeout spot. These days, they are left with this one and another location in Union City. I came here on 08/22/2020 to get some takeout after running a few errands in the area. I walked in at around 4:30 pm and the staff was already busy fielding takeout orders. Some COVID-19 safety measures were implemented (social distancing, plexiglass shields etc). For the most part, customers did their best to respect every other's space. Staff members wore gloves and masks, but I did observe a couple of them wore them improperly. After a quick perusing of their menu, I ordered the following: - #69 Sautéed Fish Fillet - #54 Green Onion Beef - #31 Sautéed Pork with Bamboo Shoots - A small container of spicy pig's ear The total was a little over $35 and I was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I decided to go pick up some Chinese BBQ a few shops down. By the time I returned, my order was ready. The sautéed fish fillet dish was okay. Pieces of white fish fillet were stir fried with bamboos shoots, carrots, celeries, and straw mushrooms. The fish was soft in texture and mild in taste. The assorted vegetables gave the dish a bit of crunch. Green onion beef was made with both green and white onions and thinly sliced beef that was marinated prior. The beef was tender and delicious. The taste of the onions was really evident. The pork with bamboo shoots dish was good. It was seasoned well. I love bamboo shoots so this was perfect for me. If you like pig's ear, you have to try their version. They cut the ears into thick strips and marinated them with spicy chili oil and carrots (they used to put sliced garlic too). The textural contrast was funky in a good way and the spiciness wasn't overwhelming. If you're not a Mandarin speaker, I'd suggest you get a to-go menu and figure out what you want before entering. That way, it will minimize your time being inside. The food here is not gourmet, but is what I call functional - quick, cheap, delicious, and lots of it. 4 solid stars. Yeah it looks pedestrian and prolly not too spic and span for some people but I hella love going here! I love the fact that they have lunch meals that is less than $10 (it's actually $9.25 including tax) and the food is fresh. If the food you want is not on the display case then you can order ala cart and they will make it for you (which is the case of us ordering Mapo tofu which is SOOO DANG GOOD!) I love their bamboo shoots (comparable to Porridge Place) and their other vegetarian options. They also have meat options which are also flavorful and plenty for the order. Did I ever tell you that their lunch meal comprise of 3 items plus rice and soup? Heck yeah! And who can beat their milk tea with pearls for $2. I have known this place for years because I shop at Lion Supermarket next door from time to time but never really went inside to check it out. Since a new Planet Fitness gym opened in McCarthy Ranch, I have stopped in here to get lunch after the gym. The bento box is a great option when you're in a hurry because there are prepared items ready on a buffet style steam table. Although the hot items aren't very hot after an hour or two of being made. The residual heat from the steam rice keeps them slightly warm. If you bring it home you can reheat it but I eat it as is. I'd reheat the soup though. During opening and lunch hour is when the soup will be hot because they put it in the to-go container in advance to speed things up. They have a balance of cold and hot items, vegetarian and non-veg to choose from. Some days the trays have hot food in them, some days it's empty from the lunch hour (I come around 2pm) but I'm able to pick other items available. Pictures I have included show the food items I'll get if available. There are many dishes to order from the kitchen if you don't like what you see on the steam table. The phrase, don't judge a book by its cover, comes to mind when you are visiting New China Foods, located next to the Lion Supermarket, and surrounded by a bunch of other restaurants in this particular shopping center in all directions. From the outside, it gives off a feel that the place may not even actually be open, and you're sort of left wondering whether or not to go in as the structure inside is all very dated, and doesn't look like anybody has actually renovated it for many years. Just walking by it usually, it would not be a place that you will just look at and say, "I want to eat here!" But don't be fooled, as there's a lot to offer here, albeit, ambience is not one of them. When allowed to eat inside, the place does not actually have much seating, as it's mainly just a takeout place, and they would have normally had just a few tables on the front side of the place, but seat very few people to sit down even if it weren't allowed, so don't drop by here thinking it will be good for that even when it's allowed again. Their current method of operation is that they are only allowed to let 1 person in a time to look at the food for takeout, so if you go during peak times, you may have to deal with a bit of a wait since it can pile up fast. The customer service here is sort of hit or miss, so unfortunately don't expect much. It used to be better back when their regular employees worked more often, but now it may be more of just seems like relatives are helping out, as they're less than enthusiastic, but at least they get the job done so can't complain. It is very much a mom n pop type of local shop, which could also explain the decor in general. Price wise, this place is my jam, as they're definitely the most affordable place to eat as far as portion to price in this shopping center, and probably the immediate area as well to be honest. When you pick what you want for your food, whether it's a smaller box, or a bigger box, they do not skimp you even a little on the portions. The best part about that is that it's all one price, so really, fill it up I say! The food here is pretty good, and offers basically a bit of everything. The food is already pre-made, so when you get there you just get to pick what you want to snack on. I've tried several of their dishes, while none was fantastic, the food quality and flavoring of all of the dishes was definitely good, especially when considering the price. Veggie dishes, fish dishes, meat dishes, and others. The one thing that this place offers too is that they have a lot of Chinese specific meats and dishes that most places don't really have, or that if they have them they don't do them well. Some of my favorite things at this shop are not even the entree dishes, but things like the bamboo, and the bean curd noodle. However, I do highly, highly recommend the bamboo here, as not only is it such a great value for how much you get, but honestly, the bamboo is probably one of the best ones I've had in the Bay Area as it's just so tender and nice, and goes great with almost everything. My personal recommendation, eat it with braised pork rice. All in all, New China Food, while not the most extravagant place around, is probably one of the more overlooked places by the typical customer, as you really can't tell what they have to offer until you go inside to look at the food, and also try it for yourself. Price will probably be one of the bigger draws too for this place, as again, they are quite generous with their portions, and don't charge extra for doing so. I found the spot with the smelly STINKY TOFU! A box of tofu is about $5.95 and it comes with a side of kimchi. Remember, the more the tofu stinks the better it taste. New China Foods is located in the same plaza as the Lion Market. Service was friendly and she was quite patient as I looked through the food choices. All the food comes out piping hot and in large portions. The staff here is very limited in the English language and speak mostly Taiwanese. Their take out menu comes in helpful in choosing the foods that you want. I really like this place. Tucked in a Asian strip mall, New China Foods offers a bunch of prepared foods and tofu products at reasonable prices. I remember back in the day, I used to get $1 PMT from here for fundraisers at school. Nowadays I come here for their fresh tofu skin, smoked duck/chicken and beef tendon. What I've tried: Smoked Duck - 5/5 THIS IS AMAZING. Seriously, get this! The duck is nice and tender and full of a delicious smokey flavor. Usually we get smoked chicken, so it was my first time getting duck today, but I soon realized what I had been missing out on. Soooo good. Smoked Chicken - 4.5/5 This is really good as well, but I personally find that the flavor of duck tastes even better smoked than the chicken. However, regardless if you get chicken or duck, it'll be delicious. Marinated (lu) Chicken - 4.5/5 Also really good, same consistency as the smoked chicken, just a different flavor. Salted Duck - 4/5 - Pretty darn good, and I love that the duck is super lean (rather than the inferior fatty versions you get elsewhere). Seems to have a slight smoky flavor (perhaps it's seeped in from all the other smoking they do?) but it works, and it's tasty. Marinated Beef Shin - 1/5 This was disappointingly dry although I appreciated that there was ample tendon in the beef. Unfortunately the dryness of it all makes it hard to enjoy this at all. Skip it. Marinated Beef Shank - 3.75/5 The beef tendon is different than most beef tendon I have had before, with this unique flavor that somehow gets more addicting the more pieces you have. I think it's something about their choice of spices that the tendon is marinated in - I can't put my finger on it, but if pressed I say there's an odd smokey flavor to the marinated beef tendon. It's worth trying once and figuring out if you like it. Fu Qi Fei Pian - 2/5 - I love this stuff, but their rendition is unfortunately a bit oversauced (too much oil as well). I also was not a huge fan of the crushed peanuts on top. The slices also seemed a bit too thickly crushed. Fresh tofu skin - 5/5 I love this stuff, and New China Foods makes it fresh, so that it's still super tender. Fresh tofu noodles - 5/5 Nice and soft and delicious. They unfortunately sell them in these massive bags so be prepared to make a lot of tofu noodles. Found this place on yelp and got two lunch specials for $6.99 each! Gigantic portions for three sides and one rice with a complimentary soup of the day. I would recommend mushroom chicken and the bean curd. Went at 2:30 and I think they were even more generous with servings because they close at 3 for lunch. We also got the stinky tofu which was extra pungent and delicious (my mom likes her stinky tofu). We definitely overindulged and still have leftovers for 2-3 meals. My family has the Sunday Night Ritual called 三個菜 or "Three Dishes". Basically we just order three dishes from this one restaurant every Sunday until we run out of things we want to try on the menu or don't want to go there anymore. There's always leftovers which becomes the next weeks lunch. For the past 1.5 years this has been the place and honestly we've probably eaten 70% of the menu right now. On the outside this place seems pretty sketchy, but it's actually pretty good, but now I'm pretty much immune to the flavor so I can't really taste anything LOL. I'm going to list some of our most frequent items. We didn't order all of this in one day haha. 1. Shredded Pork with Bean Sprouts ($7.49) - Such a classic and it's not bad. The dish is like 70 meat 30 vegetables, and the bean sprouts absorb all the meat flavor. I have to say the sodium content is pretty high and the meat gets kind of gross after a while. 2. Salt & Pepper Spare Ribs ($7.49) - Maybe my favorite dish. There's not a lot of bone in the meat, which is usually the case in other stores. They are more heavy on pepper which is a plus. 3. Basil with Eggplant ($7.49) 4. Preserved Vegetables with Shredded Pork ($7.49) 5. Beef with Green Onions ($7.99) - We get this dish literally every week, not because it's amazing but because it's super useful. There's a lot of beef inside so you can use it throughout the week in sandwiches and fried rice haha. 6. Seafood with Tofu Clay Pot ($7.99) - The tofu here is usually pretty bad. This store doubles up as a "supermarket", so I'm guessing that the tofu is usually leftovers from customers. We're pretty sure most of the time it's expired so don't get this dish. 7. Hot Bean Sauce Fish Fillet ($7.99) - The fish is really tender and nice. It's not spicy at all which is a little bit disappointing, especially because it's in he name. 8. Chicken with Basil ($7.99) - If you are lucky, the basil is crunchy, which I love. The chicken is cooked nicely, but sometimes it can be overdone. 9. Beef & Mushroom on Sizzling Plate ($7.99) - Another dish that's jam-packed with meat. It tastes a lot like the one with green onions just different vegetables. 10. Lamb with Sacha Sauce ($9.99) - When I eat lamb outside, the lamb is always cooked medium to medium-rare, so I appreciate the more "done-ness" this lamb is. I freaking love this place and the manager. My mom's friend with the owner, and the manager of this place is the owner's son's friend, he's from the same hometown region as I am, so is the owner, and I know the food from my hometown, they give HUMONGOUS portions with an inexpensive price. I mean, dude, just come here and you'll see. The food's one of the MOST authentic Chinese food I've EVER had in America. They sell great soy product, the soy milk's only $1.25 or $1.50, and they're made on the day you buy it. The milk-tea's only $1.50, compare to other crappy boba places that sell milk tea for 3 or 4 dollars. Their crab eggs tofu is AMAZING. But get it only if you're a real Chinese food eater. If you're one of those people who claim to love Chinese food but goes to Panda Express and buy fried rice noodles and spring rolls, then don't even bother come to this place. If you're someone that's from the North-Eastern region of China, then that's GREAT, cuz EVERYONE works there are from that area, you'll feel like home there. read more

next to lions, this place sells bubble drinks, hot lunch specials , prepared taiwanese delicacies, smoked duck legs, etc. they also have an extensive take out menu with items starting at 4.99, 5.99, and 6.99 tried the mandarin spareribs(4.99) and lionheads meatball (5.99) these dishes are comparable to (but not equal to) other restaurants (charging more). will definitely be back. read more

Have been to this hole-in-the wall joint many times since last Oct. They are one of the best kept secrets. $1 for pearl tea (can use more pearl, but $1?, worth it) Steam table with hot food ,veggie, tofu and meat items too. $3.99 per small take out box and $5.99 for the large one. The young guy usually fills it up. The lady is a bit stingy. You can also get 2 or 3 items lunch box, haven't tried yet , but sure look good. They also sell frozen XLB (xiao long bow) for reasonable price. Of course, fresh tofu etc.. A lot of Asian stores carry their products too. Recommended to many friends and so far no complaint.
