For a small Chinese place this isn't bad. It looks bad on the outside, and even looks kind of bad on the inside, but just go anyway and the food is better than expected. New China is pretty much only a place for takeout. Also they deliver. The prices are good for portions and you get a lot. After looking around for cheap takeout, I came here. It's a very tiny place. This explains why it's only delivery and takeout. It has a pretty basic looking menu. Lots of Chinese American favorites, and big portions. It seems there's pretty much everything you can think of. The last thing from here I got was the Mushroom With Tofu. It's about $12 for a lot. The tofu was too soft but overall it was mostly okay. Lots was packed into the container. This lasted a few meals. Basic Chinese. It's not great, but they're not trying to be so they beat expectations. The portions are big enough so get lunch and that's plenty for a few people. read more

Okay finally! Since I've moved, I've been looking for a good Chinese restaurant that was similar to some of my fave spots near my old neighborhood, meaning a more Americanized style, and this one hit the spot. I ordered my fried rice dark and they nailed it, it was exactly like I wanted and if you like dark rice then you know. I also got the Empress chicken, good flavor and yummy; I wish it was spicier, but that's my palette. New China has been through some changes. When we first came into Highland Park the food here was excellent. Then, before covid, the quality decreased. Chicken was grisly, sauces didn't have flavor. Most recently, as of last year, the quality seems to have come back for the most part. But the quality is still mercurial. Some nights the food is terrific and some nights it's off enough to not be fully enjoyable. In general I recommend you give New China a try. Be very clear about how you want the food down to the exact thing details (and chicken chop suey I specify less watery and that's just what they do). New China used to be a real deal as well, a ton of food for dollars less than most restaurants in highland Park. Now the restaurant is caught up with the, 'if they're willing to pay more, will charge more,'mentality which is a disappointment because I don't see a marked increase in quality (the proteins seem leaner) and the portions are smaller, not nearly what they were when we first started going to New China a long time ago. read more

Really solid Chinese delivery! Everything I've tried has been above other local spots in taste plus the price point is more reasonable than comparable places. I've had delivery from them a couple of times and enjoyed everything I've ordered. Some of the best, ultra crispy crab rangoon in the city! My only wish is for a small tub of sweet & sour sauce for dipping with this. Their eggrolls are great, as well. The Orange Chicken has such great sweet flavor, better than most places for sure. This is the WORST Chinese food that I've had in my entire life! We ordered hot and sour soup, chicken fried rice, and broccoli with garlic sauce. The soup was the best of the lot and it was mediocre. The worst was the chicken fried rice, which had a strange smell and the meat was chewy. Broccoli with garlic sauce was supposed to be spicy (as written on their website) but it tasted like a bad orange sauce. We dumped most of the food in the end. The saving grace, you ask? Husband and I had a strong craving for Egg Rolls so I said Hey I've got an Amazon Promo Code let's use that and get take out! We ordered the Appetizer Combo for 2 and the Kung Pao Chicken through Amazon Restaurants. (Great new Amazon feature they are really trying to get into everything, eh?) Well we get our food super fast and its hot and looks good but the rice was missing. I quickly double check the menu I ordered from to make sure I didn't miss some fine print about what was included (i'm a sleep deprived new mama) I see that I did not it clearly states "served with steamed rice" on the menu (i took a screenshot too) I call up the restaurant and politely ask them to send us some rice to go with the Kung Pao. The woman at the restaurant tells me, "Amazon orders don't come with rice." (In my head I'm like screeech say whaatt? First what chinese food does not come with rice and why are Amazon orders being singled out to be rice-less and how am I as a customer supposed to know this??!?) So I argue with her a while and realize she will not help and that I will have to call Amazon a ridiculous saga ensues over them including pint of rice with their food. Even the Amazon Guy was like what Chinese restaurant does not serve rice with their food?!? Here's my take this restaurant is so cheap they were not willing to throw a pint of rice in with an entree and stand by their advertised and posted menu. I didn't want anything over the top to make up for receiving an incorrect order I just wanted rice. And we also noticed during the saga that the chicken dish we received wasn't even Kung Pao it was Cashew Chicken so they didn't even send the correct food to us (this took a while to notice as again I'm a sleep deprived and starving) Also the woman on the phone said that if I had ordered through GrubHub I would have gotten rice..... My take on the food - their fried food items are greasy , doughy and bland. Skip them. Don't order the fried shrimp the tempura batter is like cake and the shrimp is like biting into jerky. The egg rolls were dry and freezer burnt. Definitely nothing fresh about them. However, their stir fries are pretty good and fresh. Lots of nice crisp veggies. I was surprised that the sauces for Cashew Chicken and Kung Pao were so similar and i don't think they are supposed to be. The Kung Pao was just Cashew Chicken spice with some heat. read more

I don't get chinese too often but I wanted to try to try something new. heck it friday. I usually go to village pizza on friday becas they have dr pibb and its always cold which I like how it should be. but I went with chinese and it's pretty good. the sauce is sweet which i like and the food is warm which I like that too. best part is that they had a little side fridge with sodas and I was able to get a dr pibb to go. not as cold as village pizza but still cold and still fresh. all in all not bad I think I will come back again maybe on a regular day not just friday next time. read more

I hadn't been here in a while before a few nights ago. I decided to order online and walk over and pick it up. I decided to pay when I got there. I ordered 3 dinner plates. Sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, and Mongolian beef. Online it says it comes with a drink and rice. I get there and the price is more expensive than it was online and the meals don't come with drinks. Ok whatever, not a huge deal. I get home and my sweet and sour chicken is actually sweet and sour shrimp. I didn't know until biting into it because they are breaded and fried. Problem is I'm very allergic to shell fish. Also the Mongolian beef was so salty it was not eatable. My husband calls over and explains the situation and they refuse to apologize for the mixup, give me the money back, or exchange the food. Until we told them I was going to the hospital, they didn't seem to care. While I injected my epipen he went to talk to them and they only would exchange the beef and shrimp out for replacements. Which were less expensive and they wouldn't refund the money. I'll never be back. read more

Shrimp Egg Foo Young - Pattie was fine, gravy tasted like water. Super super bland. Combination Fried Rice - BLAND. Tasted like nothing, no matter how much soy sauce we put on it. And that's that. They made it past one star cause the lady at the pick up counter was really nice, and the portions were big. This is my neighborhood Cheap Chinese place. It's the greasy comfort food I need every once in a while. Once I got into a fight with my boyfriend, who stormed out of the apartment, only to return 20 minutes later with dinner from New China and a hug. You can't beat that. The menu is pretty long and full of standard cheap Chinese food, some of which is shockingly excellent (Crab Rangoons, buy them) and some which is disappointing every time (General Tso's Chicken). You don't know if something will be good until you try it, and this makes it a good place to order from when freinds are over. The staff are friendly and fast and aren't above teasing you if you order take out and show up a half hour later then you intended, or asking how you are after you've visited a few times. It makes it all the nicer if you are there to pick up some easy dinner after a rough day. Portions are huge and often on the soup-y side, so plan for a bit of a mess and left overs. read more

When I asked for a refund of my food he told me he would only refund the item with a bug in it. His reason was that, "everyone makes mistakes". Everyone makes mistakes? I really like this restaurant and fortunately it's just walking distance from my apartment. I have had their sesame chicken and sweet & sour chicken and they have both been fantastic. Not to mention, their egg rolls are absolutely delicious!!! For those of you who read my reviews, you know that I am absolutely a stickler for price and value - fortunately, the value here is incredible. I eat a lot and their portions here easily last for two or more meals and their lunch special only came to about 8 dollars and change including a "complimentary" can of pop. Only delivery - food takes FOREVER always but I continued to get it ...until Tuesday night's wait of TWO HOURS+. Delivery times given: 8:30, then 8:41, then 8:40-8:50. 8:59 called GrubHub and they had a 5+ min wait. Called New China at 9:02 and was told, "She's almost there! 3-5 minutes!". Called back at 9:27 to cancel. Calls ignored repeatedly - And repeatedly - I called about 8 times. The restaurant is a 10 minute drive from my place and apparently they don't pick up the phone when they know they messed up. Received food at 9:31 with an apology of "address confusion" ... For 2 hours? I'm sorry, did you think we were in Wisconsin? Seems like the restaurant and delivery person are spending their time doing other things and not delivering. Their excuse doesn't make sense. We have ordered from here at least a 1/2 dozen times in the last three months, including a maaassive order on 10/19. If you're lost, call the phone number on the order. We will be ordering Chinese from elsewhere going forward. Too bad because we liked it. But that's probably because by the time we got it, we were starving and frozen dumplings would be good enough! read more
