Went to MudPenny this morning with my family of 4 including an 18 month old toddler. Service was great with very attentive and family staff who had good knowledge of the menu and was able to make recommendations on different dishes. The environment is warm and cozy, great for a quick coffee and bite or there are some seats in the back corner for a longer stay. It definitely gets crowded over the weekend so come early or prepare to wait a little bit for a table especially if you have a bigger party. Food was good, we ordered the almond pancakes, French toast and chicken salad along with a mac and cheese off the kids menu. Everything came out timely and tasted great. Nice ambiance and decent food but absolutely awful service. When our food arrived, I asked for a refill of coffee and never got it. Server disappeared and never checked back on us. She finally reappeared to drop off a check but didn't come back for payment. After waiting what seemed like an excessive amount of time, I went to the counter to pay and stood by the register. Two staff members behind the counter were grinding coffee and cleaning up. They glanced my way but never acknowledged me. I waited, thinking maybe they would finish what they were doing and come help me. But they didn't, and I finally had to ask if I could cash out. I'm a big fan of the Roosevelt Park MudPenny location and have been there many, many times for delicious food, yummy drinks, friendly staff, and beautiful space for working. I've been watching their progress and opening of the Ada location and drooled over lots of great looking food photos on their Instagram, and finally got a chance to check it out! The Ada location is very bright and airy inside, with lots of great natural light which makes for perfect photos. The white tile and warm wood give it a very modern but welcoming feeling. There are two entrances and plenty of parking in the lot. The big outdoor patio is really nice especially in COVID times. My boyfriend and I chose to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine with our breakfast when we were there in warmer weather. All employees wear masks and gloves and everything is sanitized between guests. I felt really comfortable and safe there, which is important in these pandemic times. My boyfriend ordered the OG breakfast sandwich, which comes with two eggs, smoked cheddar, greens, and garlic aioli on a housemade milk bun. You can add bacon, ham, or sausage, and/or get it on gluten free bread for an upcharge. He opted to add sausage for $3. I got the Brenda Kales It: roasted vegetables, white beans, red potatoes, sauteed kale, two over easy eggs, tomato jam, garlic aioli over a bed of spinach. I also asked for a side of bacon. I was so excited when our food came out, but then our server told us that they put the bacon in the dish instead of on the side. I was a little surprised but it looked so delicious that I dug in. News flash, the bacon was better in the dish, so I didn't even care anymore. Brenda Kales It is like a breakfast salad which I am 100% here for. Everything was super fresh and all the flavors went well together, especially with the addition of the Blis hot sauce that I requested. I'd definitely get this again. It was a huge portion, definitely splittable as it's seven hours later and I'm still not hungry, no joke. The OG is different than the original OG, since it now comes on a bun instead of toast, but it's still delicious as ever. The egg was perfectly runny, and the $3 sausage patty was HUGE, definitely worth it. Add that mouthwatering garlic aioli and you've got a pretty perfect breakfast sandwich. To finish our meal, I redeemed my birthday coupon which was good for a free cookie. Hot tip, MudPenny employs a super talented pastry chef who makes some really delicious and beautiful baked goods. I got one of the linzer cookies, which are buttery and melt in your mouth. We also got the specialty donut of the week, which was a cake donut with matcha icing! Really unique flavors and very tasty. Hands down my new favorite place! The atmosphere is great, it's clean and the service is fast and so friendly! Their food is great! We got some buttermilk pancakes, super tasty and the syrup was delicious, it was 100% Michigan maple syrup! Cannot get better than that! We also got B.Y.O.B, the potatoes were by far one of my favorites I've ever had! They were not too salty and they had the perfect amount of crispy! This is a repeat visit and because the time of year and what we ordered were radically different from our last visit, I wanted to report our findings. We were there for a weekday brunch on a chilly day in December. The ambiance was great, the staff was super friendly and accommodating, and according to a coffee-drinking member of our party, the coffee was excellent. Unfortunately, 2/3 of our dishes were disappointing. The House French Toast looked gorgeous upon its delivery but was very dry. Perhaps it's a matter of personal preference, but it seemed as if the bread could have been left to soak much longer before placing it in the frying pan. Additionally, we have always been only pure maple syrup consumers and the syrup served had a very strange, almost metallic taste to it. The Fire Toast was also plated beautifully but was disappointingly bland. Since I'm not a great cook, I can't suggest what seasonings were needed, but it tasted as if it definitely needed something to give it a bit more personality. On a much more positive note, Jimmy's Pesto Wrap, although the least picturesque of our dishes, was excellent. The combination of flavors, especially the goat cheese, pesto, red onion, and balsamic vinaigrette made it a winner. I'd certainly order that again if I were to return. read more

My family and I came to MudPenny after the Grand Rapids Triathlon this Sunday, and it was JUST WHAT WE NEEDED. I ordered "The Resolution" ($15) which is a delicious vegan dish that consists of a tofu scramble along with vegetables, mushroom, vegan cheese (served in the form of a dollop), on top of a bed of spinach. I also ordered the "Blooming Lemonade" ($5) which is a non-alcoholic cocktail of matcha, lemonade, with lavender. It's a bit on the bitter side, hence the matcha, but really delicious. My sibling and parent both remarked that this was "the best American cuisine" they had had in a while. (We're Chinese, so that's saying something!) I was so hungry that I finished my dish before my family members could get through half of theirs. This was really one of the best meals we have had in a Michigan restaurant. The waitstaff was friendly and the atmosphere was really beautiful. Shout-out to Cat(sp?) our server, who patiently waited as we tried to discern what our sibling would want to eat while they were in the bathroom. You're great! While I always wish there are more vegan options, I really appreciate that the menu clearly states which menu items are gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, etc. read more

What a fun and funky place! Delicious unusual offerings that are twists on the familiar. We started with their cold brew iced coffee. It's very strong and has a very unique flavor. Rich coffee flavor and molasses tones without the sweet. Definitely something to savor. We decided to share two dishes t -the wild card and the Mountie. Both were absolutely delicious! The wild card was a mix of mushrooms, sausage, onions, fresh spinach, dollops of intense ( in a good way!) garlic aioli and a torn biscuit. Served with two over easy eggs. Perfectly done with a soft liquids sunshine yellow center. The mushrooms were a wonderful mix variety-not being a mushroom fan I can only guess at the types many oyster? But definitely fresh and savory-I loved every bite of them... every.bite. I didn't think I'd like it but I was wrong! The Mountie was amazing-again not being the adventurous eater I wasn't certain I'd like it but omg! This was amazing! It served on soft naan and spread with maple sweetened sweet potato mash and Mayo. In between was roast turkey slices, bacon and fresh spinach. The sweetness of the potatoes balanced the smoky bacon and creamy Mayo ( I'm not a Mayo fan but this was awesome). It is a big sandwich -enough to share but you're not going to want to! The atmosphere is fun and there are lots of vegan and vegetarian options. It feels very sustainable with the exception of how the serve condiments- they put them in individual ramekins rather that shakers or bottles. Give the place a more upscale feeling but it seemed a bit wasteful. They also have a bar with craft cocktails. It was too early for us but they sound good and we'll be back! Enjoyed my breakfast a lot! Had the Potatoes Bravos (sp) I do dare say they were the best I have had! Very well seasoned and the aoli was sooo good and very well placed. Our lattes were very adorable, barista did a great job. They do offer gluten free toast but it's not on the menu, just ask. We hadn't been here for a couple of years, and it's sadly gone downhill in spectacular fashion. The service was cheerfully inattentive. The food was worse. I ordered the egg white frittata (supposedly GF). It was cold and leathery, and the balsamic reduction on it was more like just vinegar. Not good, plus it gave me a bellyache. (I suspect cross-contamination.) I wouldn't have liked it anyway, but this was adding injury to insult. The coffee was decent, but there are so many better places if coffee is what one desires. I got up after waiting for our food for 35 minutes to complain (there were empty tables in the place, so they were not that busy). Still couldn't get our server's attention. The manager Genevieve corrected the situation. It's clear our order was never put in, because we did wait another several minutes for our food after that. Two other tables in this same server's section got up and left. I feel that the bill should have been comped. Oh my brunch! My family so loved our meal today, which we enjoyed at a picnic table in a nearby (walking distance) park. Ordering online was a snap & the food was ready on time & smelled AMAZING! My kids loved the grilled cheese (melty cheese & pickles on naan bread) & the PB & J. My youngest used the peanut butter to dip celery sticks in that were part of the raw veggie side (celery, broccoli & bell pepper with ranch - brilliant!). The Cristo also met with great favor by all (how can you wrong by using French toast to make a sandwich?) & my Pam & Jim burrito was delish! This definitly is a California style restaurant. We had a gift certificate for this restaurant so thought we would give it a try. After looking at the menu for some time to find something that appealled to us, my wife chose the BYOB. which appeared to be a standard breakfast and I selected a chicken salad sandwich. The eggs, which were supposed to be over easy were close to being raw. The accompaning potatoes appeared to be prepared in an air fryer and were extremely hard and unedible. My sandwich was on flat bread with a lot of lettuce, onions and grapes. The chicken salad was not very tasty. This dish had chips that were baked with no taste. The highlight of the meal was the in-house brewed rootbeer. When we went to pay, the restaurant would not accept the gift coupon. The manager flatly told the server not to accept it and would not even get off his chair to speak to us. Under no circumstances will we ever choose Mudpenny due to the poor food selection, qualiy, preparation and lack of quality of management. read more

It's really nice to have another option for "quicker" healthy accessible food in GR. It has and will always be one of my biggest complaints that there are NEVER enough healthy places to pop into on a whim. This location opened during the pandemic which was unfortunate. But they have done a great job having providing an extremely easy online ordering service, and have the food prepared in an extremely timely manner. So far at this location Ive had a delicious spinach salad, a vegan wrap made with beets, and an open face egg sandwich. All items equally fresh and delicious! Their coffee is great- and made to order. This restaurant is immaculate in terms of cleanliness, and they have made the pickup process so seamless for the customers. Cons: We waited over an hour for our food and was mostly ignored by staff. Eventually I made eye contact with the presumed manager and she brought over "apology pastries" for us saying that the kitchen got swamped. Except that every single table that was seated after us was nearly done eating at this point. Waited another half an hour without anyone speaking to us. We stood up to leave and our food arrived at exactly that moment. The restaurant is mostly cleared out now. Went to the Ada Mudpenny for the first time today and it's adorable. Really really enjoyed the bright attractive clean comfortable vibe inside, and could see an extremely nice area of patio seating outside as well. Food was delicious and creative; I wanted to try practically everything on the menu but narrowed it down to a breakfast burrito that I will be hard pressed to not order again when we go back, it was delicious. The only reason for a 4 instead of a 5 is the inexperienced service, but I can't think of many restaurants that aren't struggling with staffing so just take a little patience and humor and this place really shines, the server was inexperienced but she was also friendly and trying hard so we enjoyed her. Ada village just gets better and better as things reopen and more shops go in, and the designers planned in a lot of parking so it's super user friendly to get to the restaurants and shops. read more
