    Flan De Especial

My daughter graduated from GVSU and when we asked where she wanted to go after graduation, without hesitation, she said San Chez! We made reservations because San Chez is always busy. We started out with a pitcher of sangria to enjoy while we browsed the menu. We decided on the onion and potato empanada, calamari and the chicken and chorizo for starters. We then split the seafood paella and the chicken paella between the 5 of us. All dishes were excellent! This is the first time having paella at San Chez and it did not disappoint. The shrimp and langustine were cooked perfectly and they worked perfectly with the traditional Spanish flavors in the paella. We rounded out the meal with tres leches and flan. A wonderful meal and the perfect place to celebrate graduation!

This is to go-to special occasion spot for me and my wife. Birthdays, anniversaries, or a weekend brunch. It's a unique spot that's unlike anywhere in Grand Rapids in my opinion. Parking is a lot behind the building if there are spots. Tapas experience is incredible. If the menu looks overwhelming, it's because it is. Here's what we like to order every time we go there in case anyone wants any inspiration. The portions are smaller and meant to split so if you like something, get two. Prices are definitely higher for these smaller plates so it might feel daunting to get two which is why we like to save it for special occasions or try to hit it during happy hour. - queso con hierbas - extra bread if you like carbs - croquetas - we get two of these when it's happy hour - empanadas - any filling is solid - patatas bravas - consistency has changed lately. ask for the two sauces on the side instead of on the patatas) - vieriras y tocino - it's michelin star dining experience without the actual star. ever had scallops, pork belly, and blueberry chutney? yup. - bistec con pimienta - get 2 of these. portions are small Other than that, they do advertise their paella. Either no one has made a good paella in Grand Rapids or I just don't like paella. Here and MDRD are both kind of middle of the road in terms of paella. Brunch and breakfast here is also great. Don't get anything else except for the Breakfast Empañadas and DO NOT skimp on the gravy. I honestly don't know why they charge $2.25 for it. Kind of ruins of the meal if you don't have the gravy. My two cents.

Perfect brunch & dinner spot! The food here is incredible! Everything we've had on the menu is delicious. If you're looking to ordering the paella, order that once you get to your table. Since it does take awhile to come out. Favorite tapas (small plates to share) Croquetas Empanadas Gamba's Al Ajillo (sautéed shrimp in garlic and olive oil) Vierias Y Tocino (seared scallops & pork belly)

Solid 5 stars! Food is super delicious. We ordered several tapas. We love the artichokes, empanadas and broccoli the most. Sangria was pretty tasty too. Lane took care of us. He was super friendly, professional, and attentive. Solid 5 for lane as well. place is pretty spacious. We had a booth by the window. Garage parking. Highly recommend this place.

First time trying San Chez for breakfast! We've been here for dinner several times before. They had a smaller menu, but lots of great options including some of their signature dishes from their dinner menu. The patatas bravas and croquetas were our favorite!

I loved San Chez. It's a nice restaurant located downtown with great staff and even better food.

After all these years, San Chez is still by far the best restaurant in Grand Rapids! The tapas are something dreams are made of! The shrimp are second to none. The service is impeccable! And the ambiance is festive and fun. I absolutely love it here!

we had such a good time at san chez. the service was great, the food was flavorful, and the space was lively. we were seated upstairs overlooking the dining room and bar which felt cozy and intimate. we started off strong with delicious drinks. the mykota was the perfect balance of sour and sweet. the la mentirita was an upgrade of your classic rum and coke. both of these drinks contain brix soda which is a grand rapids brand made with cane sugar. we came to try the vegan challenge menu but ended up ordering a few items off of the regular menu as well. upon our arrival, we were informed they were out of the shrimp and grits. this was the dish that we were most excited to try but our server was so helpful and knowledgeable of what was vegan from the regular menu. we ordered the tempeh al chilindron (vegan challenge special), the patatas brava without aioli, the broccoli con romesco, the champinones, and the tarta de pina for dessert. the tempeh was served over the best hummus and salsa verde i've ever had. it was so flavorful and truly the star of the meal. the patatas braves were seasoned well and the champinones (mushrooms) were the perfect meaty texture. i would probably skip the broccoli con romesco next time. it just didn't have the wow factor for me that the other dishes did. the night ended perfectly with the tarta de pina. when we saw there was a vegan dessert we were excited. when we read that it was warm pineapple cake, caramel, coconut cherry rum ice cream, and grilled pineapple, we were ecstatic. it was warm, gooey, and the perfect amount of sweet. we'll be back for the shrimp and grits and one day the paella.

Croquetas tapas - a MUST try!! Potato & smoked cheddar croquettes, garlic aioli, arbol honey

Came here for brunch recently and everything was perfect! Our server was so friendly and attentive. Love the press pot option for the table. My friend very much enjoyed his bloody mary and the customizable spice level. I ordered the breakfast wrap which is enough for 2 breakfasts and so tasty! We also tried the empanadas tapas and croquetas tapas. The croquetas were out of this world and I'll definitely be back for those alone!!

The server gave us great recommendations for charcuterie pairing. And their kalamata olive dirty martini was amazing!

This place is pretty good and has a nice vibe to it (I think it is very pretty at night), but I don't know if I'd say this is my favorite tapas place! Nevertheless, the service was quick and very friendly. Still a good place to try if you haven't gotten around to yet. BUT if you are to try this place, go during Happy Hour! The dishes are quite reasonable for the prices they offer. We got three tapas dishes: Medjooles Rellenos, Patatas Bravas, and Vieras y Tocino. Because of the sweetness of the Medjooles, I'd recommend eating as one of the last dishes. They were good! The dates and the stuffed goat cheese were well baked. Patatas Bravas were good and had a nice crispy exterior texture to it which made it fun to eat, and the Vieras y Tocina was alright. I expected to enjoy the dish more because among the other dishes, this was supposed to be the juiciest and flavorful, but it was just alright. I've had way more juicy pork belly, and this one just didn't hit the spot. Maybe because I've had really amazing fat scallops in my life, I was expecting slightly more with their scallops. But anyway, service was warm and friendly! I did enjoy my time there.

Was in town for Christkindle market and chose San Chez for brunch, it was SO good! Really nice comfortable vibe, really great food & fast friendly service. The cranberry and rosé mimosa was delicious and I really appreciated they had vegetarian biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were amazing, so crunchy on the outside. Decorated cute for the holidays too and has a window booth to people watch. Definitely will go back!

My boyfriend and I stopped in to grab some snacks and since they're part of the downtown refreshment zone, we also got some drinks to go. The staff at the AC Hotel is incredibly professional, welcoming, and authentically kind. Our service was great while we were there. I love the varied cozy seating at this bar! We chose a high top at one of the large windows, which was great for people watching. They keep them open during warmer weather so we heard a lot of the hustle and bustle of downtown. We started with some recommended drinks from our bartender -- I ordered the pina colada milk punch on draft, and my boyfriend got the skeleton key. The pina colada milk punch was really refreshing! It's made with coconut water instead of coconut cream you find in a typical pina colada, and it has a little bubbliness to it while still being tropical. I really liked it and would definitely order it again. The skeleton key was really nice, too! It was a ginger beer drink that was also refreshing. The drinks were delicious but didn't taste too much like alcohol - could be a good thing or a bad thing! For my to-go drink, I got an aperol spritz, which was delicious! For food, we got the albondigas and manchego croquettes to share. The croquettes were deliciously creamy melted cheese and perfectly fried! The aioli dipping sauce was really tasty but not needed with the richness of the croquette. The croquettes came three to an order, so be aware of that if you're planning on sharing. The albondigas were flavorful and I really liked the tomato sauce. They could have been a little more tender, but I enjoyed eating them with the baguette. Overall, our experience at La Ventanita was definitely five stars, especially due to the superior service. I would go back to try more of the food--the Cuban style burger sounds really tasty!

If you want to find a place to try with friends, family, or a date, this is a pretty cool place to try out! There are pretty good options for food on their menu. The dishes that have borders around them are what the chefs recommend. Me and my friend decided to go that route. Warm Goat Cheese - really good! It had a really thick and gooey texture, and I felt with the warmth it added to the deliciousness to it. It really is a comforting dish to try out. I thought the Spanish tomato sauce really complimented to the warm goat cheese. They offer 6 pieces of bread; if you need more, they will give you more! Smoked Chicken Empanadas - this dish was pretty good. The shell was very crispy, but the chicken inside was actually pretty dry, to my surprise. The salsa tasted good though, and I really loved the red pepper cream. Beautiful dish though! I don't think I'd get it again though. I do prefer my empanadas slightly on the softer side. Garlic Shrimp Adobado - this was probably my favorite dish. My friend thought it was a little too strong with garlic, but what else would you expect with "roasted garlic, confit garlic butter, garlic chips" as the description?? I personally didn't find it too garlic-y. I loved it and would recommend it. It was flavorful and I loved the soft cloves of garlic. It wasn't too heavy of a dish. Smoked Bacon Wrapped Medjool Dates - this was also one of my other favorites. If you're getting this dish with other ones, my suggestion is to eat this last because the dates are naturally pretty sweet which almost make it feel like you're eating a dessert dish. The bacon was sooo good and cooked so well with the dates. Super decadent dish and unique! If you are not familiar with tapas style, the front of the menu talks about tapas and the communal aspect of it. I loved that they did it! True to tapas style, the restaurant can serve you one to two dishes at a time, which I would recommend. The service was great. Super friendly and warm. On the slower side, but I think it was just because it was pretty busy that night.
