The ambiance was awesome - super cool decor and New Orleans vibe. The server we had was kind and friendly. The chef came out and told us about a special that was new as well as a few unique items he makes from scratch. So I went to this place expecting some run-of-the-mill rundown restaurant barely hanging on in downtown Grand Rapids. Well was I wrong!!! I didn't realize Sugah Please was influenced by New Orleans, the Bayou, the French Quarter, Mardi Gras, and beads. Add to that the atmosphere of authentic New Orleans style internal architecture, I literally felt like I stepped away from the party in the streets for some French Quarter solitude. And the food followed suit. The food was amazing. The eggs were scrambled to perfection, the bacon, thick juicy cooked to absolute perfection, and then the French toast... when I say French, we're talking French Quarter. I felt like I was in New Orleans as I ate my breakfast and then, as if that wasn't good enough, my server started yakking my brains out and I loved it. Her name was Angie and I ended up just loving her style, her look, and her beauty. I am talking about her inner beauty of the way she empathized when she found out I was grieving my wife of 49 years 362 days and leap years. She was awesome. We became friends. Finally I asked for the manager to come over. Her name is Nicole and I thought she was mad at me for talking to Angie so much. Was greeted as soon as I walked in, no wait (granted the restaurant wasn't busy at all) - Ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes and Shrimp&Grits, FGT was lightly breaded, and came with a delicious Cajun dipping sauce, hit all the flavors I was hoping for Shrimp and Grits were also outstanding - great consistency on the grits; while it did look a little "soupy" when it came out - the grits being just a little thick under it balanced it out as you mix the sauce into the grits. We arrived here and asked if they could take a party of 8 on a Thursday around 1 p.m. They said yes, but then the weirdness started... There was literally one other occupied table in the restaurant... But they refused to seat 6 of us until our last 2 guests arrived--even though we said they were just outside parking. They greeted us but then explained there was a mandatory 20% gratuity added and they required one check per table. Then there was a list of what we could not have--items they were out of. We split the beignets, which were warm, light and delicious with sugar and almonds. My favorite thing. The waitress repeated our orders back so intentionally and repeatedly that it felt weird. I had a cup of regular coffee and when I requested a refill (after beignets but before breakfast, I was told I could have my "one free refill" if I wanted to. Mmm... First-the establishment is not clearly identified by the signs from the street or sidewalk. Second-I walk in and my name is placed on the waiting list. I asked if I may sit at the bar bc so many people were in the small waiting area. I had brought a book so I was fine patiently waiting at the bar sitting area. After about 30 mins. I asked the gentleman if he was aware I was sitting at the bar and on the list. He failed to ask my name just saying he has to go by the list. I get that and respect that. Finally after 50 mins. My friend and I decide to leave. I asked the waitress if they forgot about me. She said no the called my name twice 40 mins ago. She said you can sit at the table by the window ok thanks. After 10 mins of sitting there with no menus or any contact we left. Here is my problem-two different staff knew I was sitting at the bar waiting for a seat. We had a great first experience at Sugah Please! We went on a Saturday and was told it would be a 3 minute wait- it was literally almost exactly that, even though it was pretty busy. Our server was very kind and helped us look over the menu. I ended up ordering the signature peach cider to drink- important to note they don't have their liquor license yet, or their coffee maker in, so drinks are a little limited, but the peach cider is worth it! We then started with the beignets, which were beyond delicious. I had the cinnamon french toast, which was sweet, gooey, and balanced by the fruit on top. My husband had the french toast and chicken, and literally said, "I forgot how good chicken could be". We also got a side of grits, which were super flavorful. Overall, a great experience! R&B, relaxed southern references to the atmosphere and mood... and the gravy on the shrimp and grits was outstanding. 8/10 - Wings with the jalapeño peach sauce and they were tender (maybe baked) and flavorful. 9/10 - Shrimp and grits.. that gravy and the portion is filling. 7/10 - French toast. Good caramelization on the bread. Tried it with and without syrup, the berries and glaze drizzle along can serve as the "healthy" sweet option. They're still working out the kinks here. I expect things to get better in time. Right now, we're still missing coffee (at a breakfast joint) and timely service (the food takes way too long to arrive). But the food *is* delicious once you get it. Our server made a mistake and brought me the wrong omelet (that happened to be $7 more expensive). They did offer to remake the proper omelet, but this would have been another 20 minutes of waiting (!). I stayed with the wrong omelet to save time. But rather than charging me for what I ordered, the manager only knocked five dollars off the bill. Grr--you're going to keep $2 because I couldn't wait another 20 minutes? Mistakes will happen, but it's hard for me to send folks here if we're not working harder to make things right. Bottom line: the food is good. It's expensive. And it takes a realllllly long time to arrive. You can't be in a hurry. Heads up: They automatically charge 20 percent gratuity on your bill. I'm told that coffee and a liquor license are on the way. Let me start by saying this was almost a 3 star. In the end I brought it down to a 2 because of how we were greeted, or the lack of greeting I should say, when we arrived. A girl that clearly worked there looked up when we walked in, made eye contact with me but did not return my smile and then did not greet us. We stood there for a couple minutes and right at the moment my husband suggested we leave she finally spoke to us. When we were sat we were told there was an automatic 20% gratuity which is...a choice. Our server then assured us she would go above and beyond which...it was already too late for that in my opinion. She was nice, did her job. Like the food, The service was...adequate. I had the breakfast sandwich and grits, my husband had the french toast. Overall the food was a 5/10 for us. Not horrible. Not great. The french toast was a little dry and the sandwich could have benefited from some sauce, but I was most surprised by the grits. They tasted like instant which was a little disappointing. All in all I think the food is overpriced by 30%. For $8 my sandwich would have been fine. For $12 I'm giving it some side eye. Last, the ambiance is really nice, really classy chairs and I love the look of the bar. But the R&B music was too loud and occasionally too explicit for brunch. Overall, the place seems like its trying, but currently missing the mark. I stopped in during Sugah Please's soft opening. The restaurant was obviously in a state of transition as the owners prepare to open later this month, but that was expected! It's a soft open, after all. I ordered the shrimp and grits. It was incredibly delicious and so comforting. The food was perfectly seasoned, cooked, and plated. I'll definitely be going back to try some other dishes. Food aside, the service was stellar. The staff were so kind, hard working, and attentive to the guests. The ambiance, while still being polished before the open, is already feeling great.
