The Auction House is quite literally all the best parts of Wayland, MI wrapped up in one dining experience. When you walk into this simple brick outbuilding of the livestock auction, you might be taken back by how tiny it is really is. About 20 seats wrapped around a U shaped counter. If all the seats are filled, just be patient and hang out by the door, something will open up soon. If you need seats together, it is not unusual to see a whole row of customers get up and shift their seats around to make room for you. That's just what you do because it's the right thing to do. Very Wayland. You'll also want to prepare yourself for small talk. When you sit at the counter, it's more like sitting at a giant dinner table in your kitchen at home. There's plenty of regular customers and it won't take long for you to become one yourself. Amy's food is outstanding and, trust me, you won't go hungry. I got a brown sugar shaken espresso latte and a steak bowl and both were fantastic. I was surprised by the latte not being too sweet like most places, and you could still taste the coffee. The only downside to this restaurant was the heat, it almost felt like there was no air conditioning. I will say there are tons of windows and nice natural light, so that could be the culprit. They do have a nice patio if the weather is right, unfortunately when I was there the smoke was considered hazardous, so eating inside was the best option. All in all, I would recommend anyone trying MudPenny if you like to eat good ingredients and drink great coffee!

This is the burger I believe all others should be measured against. It's the best most well balanced burger I've ever had and crave when it's time for a burger. Each bite is a beautiful balance. They dice the onions and the pickles, so no bite is interrupted, by your onion falling apart or an over amount of pickle. I've driven over 1100 miles and 16 hours for this burger and will do it again. Make sure to come hungry when ordering or at least bring a friend to share. The burger arrives on an 8 or 9 inch roll, it's the size of a small pizza, but for $13 it's a deal even more so if you decide to split it. Back in the day they used to keep record of how many were consumed in a sitting and they can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was 2 1/2. Maybe you won't agree it's the best burger ever, but I'm sure you won't regret it. The staff is always super friendly and accommodating. Many fresh baked goods for take home as well and they make really great breakfast and have daily specials also. If you live this close by consider adding this to your rotation of places to go.
