These donuts...... let me start out by saying it's my birthday, and I'm far from where I grew up. We have a little town bakery that is open 24 hours and has amazing donuts. I've been homesick for them and stumbled across this place while going to the tulip fest. These are arguably the best donuts I've had. Don't have a picture, we ate them too fast. Got a glazed chocolate iced, plain sugar (the BEST one), cinnamon sugar, chocolate, and glazed sour cream. All of these were hands down amazing. My MIL and I stopped here for a coffee and refresher before some more travel. We left with six delicious fresh doughnuts and a hot coffee. There was a variety to choose from at the time we came in- I know some bakeries who are out of stock by Noon. We visited around 1100. Outdoor sign says open 0500 AM -0430 PM. These are the best donuts I have had in a long while. They are not air fluff, nor cake. It is a sturdy or substantial donut batter that feels like you have something special and old-timey in your mouth. The grease they are fried in is clean and not noticible after frying. The cream fills are filled end to end. None of that half-full stuff you get at other places. The rich chocolate icing tastes good and homemade. I tried the Long John's and Apple fritters. I was leaving Grand Rapids to head to my friends surprise bday party in Chicago and thought to myself - cake is overrated I should bring donuts! I searched donut places that were on the way and this bakery popped up. Back in Cincinnati we have a donut shop everyone loves to go to so while in Grand Rapids I thought it would be better to get a unique spot instead of Dunkin or Krispy Kreme. When you walk in it has a normal bakery feel with the donuts on display. The variety of donuts isn't anything special but they have all the necessities. Not only that the prices were way better than what I would have predicted ! Only $11 for a dozen donuts! It is very hard to select 12 donuts. The price is definitely better than Marge's Donut Den which I also went to to try out both. These donuts tasted absolute amazing! Wanted to do a donut tour this morning so we started with Phoenix Rising. These are super delicious! Even though we went at 12, they were still fresh and warm. They have a $10 limit on card purchases so we tried their Vietnamese iced coffee. So good! It doesn't seem super cold at first but the more you drink it, the ice mixes around and it's perfect. It's not super sweet which I like. Definitely adding this place to our list of local faves. read more

First of all- go here and get doughnuts. They are delicious. The stand out aspects are their fluffiness- I don't know what they do here but man these doughnuts are FLUFFY. Second, the taste and texture of their fillings is very good- smooth custard that's not too sweet, fruity jam that tastes home made. Also the doughnuts are perfectly crispy in the outside which in contrast to the fluffiness is kind of perfect. The lady who runs the place is also very nice. I tried their Vietnamese coffee too, which was really good. It has sweetened condensed milk in it, so it's pretty sweet in general but this was fairly balanced- I asked for it medium sweet. Ok now the part of review writing I hate- the constructive criticism. My only two points of criticism are that the doughnuts can sometimes be unevenly filled and messy looking. Have come here on many occasions and have never been disappointed. Love the creme filled donuts and bear claws. All of the donuts however usually are very fluffy and satisfy any donut craving. Usually come here once every couple months but the owner has very good memory and knows who I am every time. Upon orderimg a dozen or two...she sometimes throws in an extra donut or two which is amazing. This establishment also serves Vietnamese coffee which I've never seen at any other donut place in GR. Really great donuts! I was a bit skeptical when I saw 5 stars and walked into a simple, small-town feel bakery, but it really has outstanding donuts.
