The chocolate filling is closer to pudding than fudge, but good nonetheless. The buttercream frosting was right on point. Not greasy and plenty firm. According to him the order was quick and simple. No hoops. The boyfriend also didn't have to order it too far in advance, just a few days. It's probably cake off-season, but still. Every year now, I order at least one birthday cake for one of my family members from Connie's. It's tough because my sister got her wedding cake here, and I remembered liking it so much at the wedding that I ordered it for my other sister's birthday. The lady was super nice and was able to find the order and make it for us as she had before. It was a white cake with raspberry filling and buttercream frosting. It just wasn't the same. It seemed like any cake I could have gotten anywhere. It was super cheap though. It was like $8.95 for a square 8 inch cake! Amazing price, but I wanted to be wowed again. This was stop #2 on our Grand Rapids bakery tour this past Saturday morning. We came in looking for cupcakes or other sweet goods. What we found was a very limited selection of cupcakes in a mostly empty display case. Two of us got the raspberry lemonade cupcake and one person got the red velvet cupcake. I wasn't wow'd with my raspberry lemonade cupcake and my friend said hers was even a little dry. The red velvet cupcake was a disappointing same. We stopped by at around 10:30am on a Saturday morning and it was dead- you could hear crickets. With every other bakery on our tour, packed on a Saturday, the fact that this one is being skipped over, should tell you something. I've always ordered cakes here whenever we needed to celebrate a birthday. So this year was no different. I ordered a cake for my wife and picked it up on the day we were to celebrate. And then disaster struck.... I left the house to pick up another gift and my dog found a way to get onto the table and proceeded to eat the entire cake! The peanut butter frosting enticed her just as it had been enticing me all afternoon. Panicked, I went back to Connie's Cakes to simply pick up a couple of cupcakes. Somethings better than nothing, right!? The owner (Mary), was very helpful. Rather than buy a few cupcakes like I had planned, she grabbed 7 chocolate cupcakes, frosted them with the peanut butter icing, and decorated the top as she had done on the original cake! This was a very last minute task, and it even delayed an appointment she had for taste testing. I was very appreciative of the service I received and will continue to purchase my cakes from here. The prices are very reasonable, and the products always taste fresh. To address the comment about it being dead at 10:30 on a Saturday, I would not contribute this to poor products, but rather the location. Conies cakes and crafts was the bakery that would work with my without having to go in there and try the cakes and have then show me around. I was not about to make a 7 hour trip to go and try cake. That was not happing. Instead I spoke to her over the phone, told her what I wanted, and did not want. I sent her a swatch of fabric for the color of the trimming of the cake. Along with a letter to let her know again how I wanted the cake. And all turned out wonderful. She was so kind, so respectful, and understanding, that I could not try the cakes before she made it. She was wonderful in my time of need. We got white cupcakes with raspberry filling and the filling was about the size of a pea. We also had a very hard time dealing with the owner, Connie. She is not a very pleasant person to work with and is ALWAYS grumpy. We never found her to be in a good mood, whether it was in person or on the phone.
