I'm new to the area and after living in Chicago for a decade I'm pretty used to great bakeries and cupcakeries. The first order I placed here was for my father-in-law's birthday cake. I ordered over the phone and it was easy as pie. I wanted something rather specific and they were happy to accommodate me. I picked up the cake at the agreed upon time and it was beautiful! My son and I also grabbed some cupcakes to enjoy at home and they were delicious - red velvet and a vanilla M&M. The cake itself was great; moist, flavorful, everything you want in a cake. And this after I mistakenly refrigerated it for a day! I just placed my second order for my father's birthday cake and ordering was again an easy experience. The woman I spoke to was kind and helpful. She was thankful that we ordered in advance, so I'm wondering if some of these negative reviews might be from people who aren't giving enough advance on their order... A busy bakery usually needs at least a week or two to fulfill custom orders. Overall, very happy with my initial purchases and I'm excited to see how my dad's German chocolate cake turns out!

They responded quickly and I was able to order a large pan of banana pudding for pickup on Christmas Eve. The order was ready when I arrived, and I liked the exterior and the interior of the shop. The owner and the worker I saw were both smiling when I came in and both seemed really friendly. The portion size was larger than I anticipated so we had more than enough for our family. They all loved it! This was my first time visiting Dessert First, but with their service and the way my family enjoyed the banana pudding, I will definitely return.

Normally I get a sheet cake, but they didn't have any, so they told me they were giving me a 7 inch round When I picked it up, it was in a sealed box, so I didn't discover until I got home that the cake had a hard chocolate coating rather than just the plain buttercream frosting I had expected. When I called the store simply to understand what had happened, the woman I spoke with was argumentative and dismissive. She repeatedly told me that that cake "always comes that way" and that I "should have known." I explained that I had never received it that way before and had every reason to believe I was ordering the same traditional cake with buttercream frosting that I had purchased previously since that's what I had asked for in my phone conversation to order the cake. What was most disappointing was the complete lack of courtesy. I wasn't asking for a refund or anything for free--I simply wanted to understand why I had received something different from what I thought I had ordered. A simple, "I'm sorry there was a misunderstanding," would have been more than sufficient. Instead, what should have been a very simple conversation became unnecessarily unpleasant. The cake was disappointing, but the customer service was far worse.
