The very thick frosting is not made with real butter but some kind of shortening and tits really bad tasting in the three flavors I had. The frosting tastes like it comes out a big industrial tub. No one can beat the flavor variety here! We tried the banana pudding, death by chocolate, beer butter and tres leches. All the bad reviews unfortunately carry some truth. Death by Chocolate - the buttercream is heavy, it taste pure sugar and not good quality fluffy butter and u wish it actually had some flavor. The cupcake batter is dry. I wish it would be more crumbly. Banana Pudding - really good, the torched merengue cover was done really well! The cupcake itself could've been a bit more moist but for this topping it was a big problem. Tres Leches - the whipped topping was nice and delicate, but the batter was so dry and for the authentic tres leches, it lacked the tres leches soak mainly the coconut milk flavor. Butter Beer - tasted great, the frosting was good but again just wish that was lighter. Service was great and ordering very easy. Cupcakes were priced right, and despite of some of the misses on the batter and buttercream frosting, I would round this review to a 4-star since it was the most convenient way to order and the creativity and beauty of these cupcakes. read more

If you haven't tried The Salted Cupcake before, they have a new weekly menu starting on Tuesday and runs until Sunday. Five unique creations each week along with a set of recurring favorites (including Pupcakes!). They get reallyyyyy creative with some of these cupcakes. I've had them twice before and loved them so much. They're very light, delicate cakes that don't sit heavy in your stomach. Let me know which one sounds the best to you. Death by chocolate - The naming on this one is pretty on point. If you're a chocolate lover, get this ASAP. It's the perfect balance of richness, sweetness, and cocoa flavor. It reminds me of the classic Hershey's chocolate cake recipe if you're familiar with that. Chocolate frosting was delicious and had a very mild cocoa flavor. Ganache filling was heaven. And the flourless brownie on top was much better than a cherry. It was dense but crumbly and delicate at the same time, 8/10. White chocolate raspberry - I'm a massive raspberry fan soooo... this one was my favorite. The raspberry buttercream is to die for. It's not very heavy on the raspberry flavoring which works really well with the light vanilla bean cake. The raspberry filling was thick and sweet which added a great contrast to the cake and buttercream. The white chocolate snowflake garnish was a beautiful touch. It's really simple but absolutely delicious. Definitely more sweet and less rich than the other two cupcakes, 9/10. Salted cupcake - The chocolate cake was moist, light, and fluffy, same as the Death By Chocolate. The caramel sauce on top was absolutely delicious (surprise surprise it tasted like caramel). The peanut butter buttercream frosting was a bit strange to me. The texture was perfect - melt in your mouth and had a good airy/light texture. It tasted like peanut butter for sure. But it had this strange artificial kind of taste to it. Funny enough it reminds me of this chocolate peanut butter protein powder I just got, that's the kind of weird taste I'm talking about. The Salted Cupcake is the cutest little bakery off of 32nd street in Grand Rapids. I have been following them on Instagram for a while, and finally had an excuse to get some (Easter dinner dessert!). They are constantly changing their menu but still have a couple classics they keep on the menu at all times. I highly recommend following them on social media to see their new flavors every week! I was able to preorder 8 different kinds of cupcakes on Facebook Messenger and they had my box all prepared prior to my arrival. I would recommend preordering because when they sell out they are done with that flavor for the day. I need to be honest.... You can preorder with them, which I highly recommend if you are looking for either a large quantity OR specific flavors. Today is my mom's birthday, and we're headed to them for a small celebration. Yesterday, I was trying to figure out what kind of special dessert to bring for our small celebration. Then, The Salted Cupcake came across my Facebook feed highlighting an extensive menu perfect for all of our different taste bud preferences, and a wheat free option for my own digestive pyrotechnics. I was able to instant message with our order and it was ready for me all boxed up by the time I got there. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of wheat free cupcakes. Many places that I go to there is one option for gluten-free / wheat-free. And it's usually a very plain flavor. This weak, there are two different options one including the RumChata carrot cheesecake offering! Currently August 2020, this establishment is requiring masks inside, and since it's a very small operation only three people are allowed in the building at any time. Be prepared to wait in the parking lot if they are busy. I would recommend calling your order in earlier to minimize the time you're in the building, and to make sure that you get the flavors you prefer. There were a few flavors already sold out by the time I walked in at 4:30 on a Wednesday. I understand that these are gourmet cupcakes. I spent over $24 for seven cupcakes. That is a little higher than my basic discretionary budget. But, for special occasions it's a nice option! I will definitely be back for our next special occasion. read more

I had the cookie dough, which is a vanilla cupcake with chocolate chips, caramel buttercream and a mini chocolate chip cookie on top. The cookie was also baked perfectly. Chewy and amazing! They had about 8 or 9 flavors including the signature Salted Caramel Cupcake, Fruity Pebbles, Bacon Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Brownie, and Red Velvet. They also have wheat-free cupcakes, but I don't think they are made in a dedicated wheat-free area. Their hours are Tuesday through Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, and closed Mondays. They are in the building where the Coco Charlotte bakery used to be. We got the harry potter themed cupcakes and for nearly $5 a cupcake, disappointment would not even fully express the feelings we had about these cupcakes. All of the cupcake bases were extremely chewy, airy, and felt like biting down on a spring mattress. ravenclaw buttercream frosting has to be a joke, it was flavourless, the cake was decent out of the four we got but the 'cream cheese' top tasted like licking a stick of butter dipped in oil. sorting hats topping was thick, flavourless, the cake was disappointing and airy, not good. on top of that, the yellow poot of colored frosting inside just didn't live up to the expectations, especially with hufflepuff being inside but i digress. butterbeer was by far the best flavor but didn't have any of the cream soda flavor, just straight butter scotch. ultimately, i would rate 1 gordon ramsay out of five, not sure if this was a bad day as the reviews are pretty good normally but with this experience, i won't be going back. read more

They have a standard 5 cupcakes all the time(I believe it's 5) and each day of the week post a menu for each day another 5 cupcakes available that day, it varies day to day week to week! We were not certain how good a cupcake could be so we just tried three of the cupcakes- brown butter, death by chocolate and salted caramel. We took them home -we live an hour away- and shared that night. We immediately regretted our decision to only get three and to share what we had! oh my goodness!! They are sssoooo good! We each wanted to eat them all ourselves. The brown butter was our favorite -the cake has a very firm almost chewy crumb-it does not crumble when you remove the paper. The buttercream was luscious. An ice cold glass of milk is the perfect accompaniment. The salted caramel cupcake was our least favorite and this is on us.
