The Wilderness has chosen...Sara's Sweets as the best bakery in GR! I was so nervous to submit my very niche request for a Yellowjackets themed cake for my birthday/the S3 premiere. I walked into Sara's sweets on a Monday around 12 to purchase a ready made cake for my husband's birthday. They're were 4 different options of full cakes in the fridge- 2 white cakes, Oreo and carrot. I was between Oreo and carrot but the carrot was buttercream not cream cheese frosting which is my preference. The worker told me to go with the Oreo. The 6" cake is $36 and no extra charge for writing. The cake overall was pretty good. The buttercream was soft with no chunks to it indicating an experienced baker. The frosting itself was not overly sweet but it is very indulgent. The cake itself had Oreo pieces in it. I felt it could've been a bit more airy and moist, but I did only leave it out of my fridge for about 15 minutes prior to cutting so that is also on me. For the price of the cake, it was exactly as I had expected. The bakery has various bars available, cake in a cup, mini cakes and cheesecake (slices and a half cake). I would definitely go back- I think next time will try a cake in a cup. read more

I called 3 weeks ahead to have a cake made for my mothers birthday. The gentlemen said he will look at the email I sent and get back to me since they were closing in 10 minutes. I sent another email a few days later since you have to have 2 weeks to put an order in. They had no power and were going to get back to me. I never heard back again and that was Sara. I then reached out again and I was asked what I wanted with fondant number, flowers fake or buttercream. I answered and never heard back so I reached out again. Then I got this response: Here is the pricing: 8" cake $42 Filling: $6 Fake flowers: $15 Lace: $5 (not edible) Cake total: $68 Let me know if you would like to proceed. Thanks, Tracey -- ALL ORDERS MUST BE PREPAID. We do not put in the order until it is paid. My original email response from their questions: Fondant and painted silver for the 65. The flowers can be buttercream. Edible lace if possible. I was just wanting 3 cupcakes whether for dog or not. This is not what I originally asked for in the emails. No fake flowers and no lace. I ordered a cake for my birthday party, I emailed a picture and they emailed back and said they could do this cake. They sent me an example of one that they had done, but it had silver on it instead of the lime green for the drip on the cake. I asked if they could do the lime green and the person who emailed me back said they talked to the decorator and said that they could do the lime green like the picture I sent them. I brought the little bottles in that we're going to go on the cake about a week before the cake was going to be made, and paid for the cake. The person I talked to when I paid for the cake said she wasn't sure about using all of the bottles and I said that's what I wanted. That's why I sent a picture of the example. Another person came out of the back and said it's no problem. We can use all of these bottles so I said OK. A week later I came to pick up my cake the day of my party. I was very disappointed in the way that the cake looked. The picture I sent had all lime, green and white or white truffles and macaroons. They had chocolate truffles on the cake and a few macaroons that were kind of an army green color when I asked why these truffles were chocolate instead of white chocolate they said well we don't do truffles here we had to go buy a pack of them and that's what came in the pack. I'm not sure why they didn't call me to OK this with me but I wouldn't have been OK with it. Then the logo on the fondant frosting was blue in color instead of black. When I asked about that, they said it must've been something with their printer. Finally, I mentioned the fact that the cake was slightly leaning, and the decorator agreed with me that it was leaning. They did offer to try to fix some of the things which I didn't know how they were going to do that. They closed in like an hour and there was a lot of things wrong with it they did offer to dip the chocolate truffles in white chocolate. Again had they just called me, I could have even brought in the truffles. I was very specific that I wanted the cake to look just like the one in the picture now I realize there could be some slight variations, but some of the things that we talked about they assured me would not be an issue. So after dropping the cake off, I called them and just said I'm not happy. I want some money taken off of this order and they said they would have the owner call me on Monday. During the the event, my friend had asked people how the cake was. Some replied it's ok. Some said it was good. When I had a piece the next day, I thought it was a bit dry, but not terrible. On Sunday the day after my event, the owner emailed me and her email said Simply, I understand that you were not happy with the cake. Can you please tell me why? Thanks I replied back that I was not going to go back-and-forth with her about this on email that she could call me on Monday or I would call her . Her reply to that, Why not email? I answered her back that I'm the customer it's a Sunday and the day after my event and at this point, I was no longer interested in even talking to her about it the situation I would just do a review. I was really disappointed by this whole interaction really just wanted my cake to be great and it was just now at all what I wanted . read more

Thanks to the reviews that I just read, I need to go back and pick up some cupcakes.thanks guys, I really don't need cupcakes. We went to the sub shop next door and stopped in here to pick up a couple things for a snack. I decided to get the raspberry covered cheesecake and my wife got the pecan pie. The cheesecake was delicious and fortunately my wife didn't eat hers so I had to eat that the next night. DARN. I thought both were very good. Not to sweet. Now I have to remember that Tuesday and Wednesday are apparently double cupcake day. Guess I'll be showing up on one of those Ok. Went back a week later to get some cupcakes. I got 2 strawberry ones, an Oreo one, and a peanut butter cup one. They were nice and moist. I am a frosting lover. This frosting to me was very good. I like mine really sweet. These were not as sweet as I like it, but they were sweet enough for me to enjoy them. That means if you like yours less sweet, you'll love them. I stopped in on Friday afternoon willing to take just about any cake they'd offer me for my father in law's birthday, knowing I was walking in last minute and didn't have many other options nearby. I was so surprised to find they had several ready made cakes available and they offered to take the chocolate/chocolate cake I chose to the back and write on it for me. We were headed to the lake and wouldn't be eating the cake 'til Sunday, so I was prepared for it to be a little dried out, but it wasn't at all. My family in New York ordered a cake here during the pandemic so I could have a cake for my virtual birthday party. Well- my cake was large enough for a whole wedding reception. Well, I heard that they were very nice here, and the cakes were pretty! However, the cake was not very good, at all. I'd say the buttercream was a fair buttercream, but the cake itself was not good. The 'Snickers' cupcake was nothing more than a dry vanilla cupcake with white frosting and a tiny sliver of a snickers bar on top. Totally confusing name. I was expecting a cupcake that tasted like Snickers not just garnished with a tiny bite of Snickers. Too bad, I would have loved to have a go-to bakery near my home. Completely and utterly disappointed in this bakery. My wife and I placed an order for a gluten free chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and a strawberry middle layer for our daughter's baptism party. When we went to pick it up we noticed it was a white frosting. While I know people make mistakes, they were not remotely apologetic and expected us to just be ok with the wrong order. We had to demand some kind of reimbursement. They kept offering an in-store credit but after this poor customer service we will never be going back there again, so an in-store credit would be useless. They would only give us the third of the cost back or take the cake back for a full refund but that would have left us without a cake for the party which was later that day. Not an option. I have worked in customer service and this is no way to run a business. We paid them for a product, they gave us the wrong product and did nothing to make it right. If you order a product from here be ready to just deal with whatever they give you whether correct or incorrect. read more

I had went in October 2020 for cake tasting in the Grand Rapids area - for my April 9th 2021 wedding in Shelbyville, as home for us is Macomb County, MI! I visited 3 local bakeries and Sara's Sweets BLEW the other two outof the water! Not only on packaging and presentation, but on taste and options/flavors as well! It was super easy to stop in and grab our to go sampling's and we took them all back to our hotel room at our venue (Bay Pointe Inn/Woods) to try them all! My mom and I couldn't stop eating the peanut butter filling and frosting! I reached out in November and booked with Tracey for a 3 tier wedding cake yellow cake with buttercream frosting - with two layers frosted the same and one messy! Also, I ordered 5 dozen cupcakes! 2 dozen Reese's, 1 Chocolate cake w/ chocolate whip filling, 1 Strawberry cake with cream cheese, & 1 gluten free mixed dozen! Due to another vendor (not bakery) giving me the run around, around March I checked back in to verify we were still all set! The process and communication was flawless! Sara's Sweets delivered to our venue the day of, charging not much of a delivery fee! Saved so much time and stress knowing they were dropping off the day of! I'm here to say the only bad part was - ORDER MORE CUPCAKES! Holy moly were they a hit - I still can't believe how fast they were! If the lovely staff didn't save me one in the cabin - I wouldn't have even had one haha! The cake went over very well as well! We were able to save our top but will most likely order a fresh one on our one year - due to already wanting to go back! So many great reviews and friends and family raving on the cake and cupcakes!
