I got their Turkey Club sandwich and LOVED it. I had heard so much about this place so I was really curious to try out their food. Honestly, I am not a huge sandwich person, but if I heard a sandwich shop is good, I'll try it. The sandwich was cut in half and had their Michigan Turkey, bacon, avocado, and other veggies that you can read in their menu. The turkey was really delicious - like, really, REALLY delicious. It was so flavorful and soft. And the veggies like avocado, tomatoes, and lettuce tasted so fresh. I got it with sourdough bread, which was really good. It was a bit tough to put the whole sandwich in your mouth because of the crusty crusts (lol), so I just resorted to eating it with a fork and a knife (very proper). The food came out rather quickly, and the service was very sweet, friendly and down to earth. Ambience was great! Casual and friendly. There is street parking - usually, it's not too difficult to find parking around this area. But maybe I just get lucky, I don't know. Don't skip this amazing bakery in the downtown Grand Rapids market. Their sourdough cinnamon rolls are hearty, super "cinnamony", and have just the right amount of sweetness to not be too sweet. They're fantastic! We also gave their GF sourdough bread a go and brought home a loaf. It's so good, I really wish we didn't live 2 hours away because this would be our everyday go-to. I have now been to this location a few times. Every time we visit town we have breakfast/brunch at this spot. There is street meter parking - so parking is easy and never an issue. They have tables set outside and inside for seating. The ordering is straightforward and the staff are super friendly. I've never had a bad menu item. Their pastries are fresh and delicious and i love the chocolate croissant and have also enjoyed the macaroons before. The lattes are also yummy and they have a variety of different flavorings to spruce it up. My favorite item on the menu would have to be the breakfast burrito - the black beans, cheese and potatoes make it more filling and the spiced yogurt underneath and ancho sauce on top make it even more tastier. read more

Field & Fire is one of my favorite places to go to get bread or a sweet treat if I'm in the area! My favorite thing to get is the almond croissant. It's the perfect amount of flakiness and sweetness, and the hint of vanilla makes it even better! They also offer a few vegan options as well, which I've heard are delicious. If you can't stop by this location or their cafe, you can typically find a few of their treats in different coffee shops around town. I highly recommend checking them out! read more

A cute little cafe in downtown Grand Rapids, where we came after being disappointed with our hotel breakfast situation. Unfortunately, they had very slow service, weak and underroasted coffee, and mediocre pastries. We paid 50.00 for two people Then we were asked to tip at the moment of payment that's completely backwards. Gave a 5 dollar tip for no service? They got us on that one. Food came and we got the same order portion sizes were completely different one plate was full the other was less than half full. It was so bad I had to say something! Field and Fire is a beloved bakery with a main location and then a stand in the Downtown Market. It's in the very back where they sell their bread, pastries and pizza. They do NOT sell their sandwiches at this location. Nonetheless, their pastries are worth trying. YAY! I finally found a bakery that makes kouign amann! It's a French pastry that is rarely made (it's labor intensive I think), so when I travel I look to see if I can find it at local bakeries. It was super delicious - light with carmelized sugar. My only critique is that the carmelization was a tad overdone (to where the sugar started to burn), but it's still delicious! We also had a baguette - soft and amazing! NOTE: this location is located inside a huge building/market filled with other restaurants, grocers, etc. We were visiting fm out of town and didn't realize - not a huge deal, just giving a heads up as it was a little difficult to find. Keep an eye out for Slow's BBQ - it's the same building. Also, if you're just going to the bakery, there is a free 15 minute parking spot on the corner, which was perfect. Bought a Frakenloaf, because seriously it's the cutest and coolest idea. Brought it back to Ann Arbor. I eat Zingerman's bread everyday - it's award winning good. This Frankenloaf puts it to shame. We were in Grand Rapids for the day and needed a quick breakfast to go. I chose to go to this Field & Fire location because I also wanted to checkout Downtown Market Grand Rapids. There were so many delicious pastries to choose from that I debated for a couple of minutes. I went with a savory/sweet combination of stuffed croissants. If you check in on Yelp, there's a promo for two for six dollars, which I took advantage of. I love savory breakfast, and the ham and cheese croissant was absolutely delicious. There is a generous bite of ham and cheese one very bite surrounded by perfectly flaky croissant. I was super surprised that I loved the Michigan cranberry and pear croissant even more! The fruit filling was perfectly tart. Field & Fire is definitely worth the stop if you find yourself in Grand Rapids! read more

How many ways can you say, oh YUM! I purchased a variety of pastries here and we ate some that afternoon and the rest for breakfast the next morning (still delicious) and each one was amazing. Loved both the almond and chocolate croissants. The gougere inspired me and my cousin to start using "you're a cheesy popover" as both a compliment and insult...it's all in the tone of voice. I'm a repeat offender here! They have samples out...so anytime I'm in the Ionia Market...you will see me trying their fresh breads! They are a little bit expensive, but they are literally fresh out of a wood fired oven. Crazy awesome. They have these excellent little single serve breads with cheese in them up front, I can't recall the name but they look like little buns with cheese on top. TRY ONE! They are maybe $2 or $3 for one...but oh so worth it. A little crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Other breads of note: Focaccia Sunflower I love those two and will always go back for them. Excellent with soups, salads, or just alone. My husband only likes white bread from Meijer (gag) so it's just me eating them. You can freeze them and they are still great later. If you do freeze and store them, slice them up before hand so its easier to eat later. If you want to try some artisan fresh breads, this is a good place to explore. read more

Everyone raved about the absolute deliciousness of the bread. Service, unfortunately, was lacking. I just.... I just don't know what to say. I mean, this is some of the best bread I've ever had in my life and I don't even know how to do it justice. I'm legitimately overwhelmed by the awesome. But, I guess a description would help: a wood-fired bakery tucked into the corner of the Downtown Market baking up pastries like fantastic looking flaky croissants (ham and cheese, chocolate, almond and more) and the most amazing rustic European style breads. I stuck with the breads this time around and picked up a few loaves to take home. The real standout? The Levain (French sourdough). Beautiful little bubbles inside the soft center and a fabulous crunchy wood burned crust. I could have eaten a whole loaf. Actually, I got pretty close to that. Oops. I also picked up a loaf of that and the multigrain (coated in lovely sunflower seeds) for my mom and we nearly killed both in a single evening after dinner (no joke. Our "dessert" was bread). In addition to those they also have varieties like Oatmeal Levain, Ciabatta, Buttermilk Whole Wheat, Sunflower Flax, Sprouted Kamut, Beer Bread (made with Brewery Vivant sour beer) and more (over 20 varieties of bread in total) At the booth they had samples of their Spelt Rye which was also incredible and I'm not even a fan of rye. It is a little on the pricer side but I have to admit, comparative to a lot of speciality bakers, this bread isn't that crazy expensive. I've regularly seen non grocery store loaves that will cost you upwards of 7-8 dollars. The loaves here were about $6-7. Yes, pricier than a loaf of Wonderbread but you're getting something truly outstanding here. Finally, the lady behind the counter was amazing. So knowledgable and gave me great recommendations based on the flavor interests of myself and my mom for which loaves would be best for each of us. Awesome. It makes me legitimately sad that this place isn't closer to where I live but I guess it's a good thing otherwise I'd be eating bread morning, noon, and night! You're lucky, Grand Rapids! read more

Literally there is no better bread in the state of Michigan. Understanding what goes into these loaves (and pastries) will help you understand what you are getting. Not just a loaf of bread, but an extremely knowledgeable and passionate artisan baker at the helm, using wood-fired ovens, long fermentation times to promote the healthiest benefits the grains can give and last but not least, big flavor and remarkable texture. My favorites are the Oatmeal Levain, Multigrain, Beer Bread, and regular Levain. I love all the pastries, but my weakness is the Almond Croissant. Gougere is remarkable with a thin slice of ham or bacon and a fried egg. Oh baby. I'd give it 3 stars for the small loaves of bread and 1 star for the pastries and 2 stars for the big loaves. So average 2 star bakery. Croissants tend to be burnt on the outside and undercooked to the point of being a bit doughy inside. All the pastries have a similar problem. Maybe it's hard to bake fine pastries in a wood fire bread oven. Big loaves of bread are hit or miss. I've gotten a couple decent ones but a fair share that are gummy inside. Small loaves and buns are the best bet for quality bread here. Give those a shot. PS focaccia bread should not be stored in a plastic bag, they sweat and ruin the texture! read more

I stopped into the Downtown Market vendors and found a great place for breads. I tried the Sprouted Kamut and French Baguette. Both were delicious and I decided on the baguette because we were planning soup soon. WARNING: Get two or more loaves. One is NOT enough. You can thank me later because I am saving you a second trip down to the market. Since we live over 40 minutes away I would have loved to have known about this. As soon as I got home I sliced a few small pieces of the baguette and smeared a little butter on it. Wow! I think I could have made a whole dinner of just the bread. Unfortunately, when I stopped I found I didn't have enough for our planned soup. A little pricey for bread but this is definitely worth the price. Trust. read more

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." I purchased a loaf of the Field & Fire-brand "Organic Multigrain" Bread, at Forest Hills Foods, recently. Since this local bakery was completely unfamiliar to me, I decided to give it a chance in spite of my reservation concerning the loaf's unusually dark crust. Unfortunately my suspicion was confirmed, as the bread tasted just as it appeared within its wrapper: inedibly burned. Into the garbage it went. Thinking that this might have simply been a one-time occurrence, I stupidly bought a second Field & Fire darkly-crusted loaf, at Forest Hills Foods, again, but of the "Organic Levain"-variety, this time. Yes, that's a great guess, folks. Yet one more addition to the household trash heap. "Burned" means "burned," not "carmelized" or some other trendy euphemism, people. Spend your hard-earned bread money elsewhere. Give "Field & Fire"-brand bread a VERY wide berth. One star is posted for the quality of the bread, the second for fooling this dummy into giving this Grand Rapids brand of bread a second try. read more

Located in the downtown market, my boyfriend and I always came here to get bread when we lived nearby. They have the best fresh bread ever. We go back and forth between the sunflower flax and the levain. The cranberry bread is also good for a speak treat. The majority of their bread is vegan and they occasionally have vegan muffins, like banana walnut. Now that we live in Kalamazoo, we nearly also stop by to grab a loaf when we come to visit friends. read more
