It's been a favorite for many years, and I love their hamburger and hot dog buns, and many different kinds of bread. They also take orders and make excellent special occasion cakes. Anyone from the Grand Rapids area will probably tell you that Marge's is the best donut place in town but Ida's is like the Clyde Drexler of donut shops in GR. Meaning yeah, Marge's (Michael Jordan) is fantastic, without a doubt one of the best to have ever done it. But Ida's (Clyde Drexler) should get just as much hype and notoriety because it's honestly just as good, if not BETTER than Marge's. Ida's donuts are so fresh and soft. They'll literally hand dip any of them in chocolate for you when you order. The crushed peanuts they put on top some of them are so finely ground, it's like this delicate peanut dusting. I haven't been to this shoppe for about 10 years and was delighted to stop in again. I picked up decorated cookies, a danish, a cinnamon roll, and some almond tarts. The danish was amazing. It was so fresh and yummy. The cinnamon roll was old and stale. Bummer. I will have to ask more questions next time. The cookies and almond tarts were crazy good. There was a ton of soft frosting not the cookies and it was sooo good. Gosh I wish I could visit there more often. read more

This place used to be great, now I understand that ownership is different and maybe they are cutting costs but the donuts and customers are suffering! The donuts taste greasy as if they are using old fry oil. The donut I like has white cream on top and it used to be big and fluffy and lots of icing and now it is small and flat and hardly any icing. The long johns used to be full of cream and now you might take 3 bites before finding any! read more

This place has very good sweets. I thought some of the things were a bit overpriced, but not so much so that it was a deal breaker. And everything I got (just stuff behind the counter) was very good. I'd love to order something and get it fresh and warm, I bet it would be even better! read more

Based on taste and appearance of Ida's Red Velvet Cake (since I was the lucky guest of a dinner party that ended with this sweet speciatly), the Shoppe gets 4 stars. I love cake, and have definitely eaten my fair share of it over the years, so I can say that I've had better and worse Red Velvets. It was still delicious, and it made for the best breakfast the next morning. Any day that starts out with cake is a winner in my book. read more

Very disappointed. They used to have some of the best cookies in town, now they've become very skimpy. We used to drive clear across town just for a couple dozen of their "Monster" cookies, that were loaded with chocolate chips, M&Ms and enough oatmeal, that I could have one cookie for lunch and it'd be enough to fill me up for hrs. Now they've become boring wafers....So sad. read more

Stale doughnuts and no selection. I stopped here to buy doughnuts after reading the reviews on Yelp and was terribly disappointed. Granted, it was a Friday around 12:30-ish, and I understand a lot of people stop to get doughnuts for the office on their way to work on Fridays. The place is open until 5:00 or so, and since the person working there told me they are really busy on Friday mornings, wouldn't you think they'd plan for that and be savvy enough business people to think 'I sell more on this day, if I make a percentage over what I do on the other days, I can sell those with the flux of customers on Fridays?" But the cases were pretty much empty. I would have left, but my husband likes apple fritters, and they did have those. There was just one cream-filled donut. There were 3 with frosted donuts. A couple of bear claws. Other than that one or two other doughnuts, and that was about it. I managed to pick out about 8, pretty much emptying their case, but would have bought a dozen if they'd had any to sell. I tried a bear claw on the drive home. Bit into it, and it was dried out and stale. My guess would be it wasn't baked fresh that day and was at *least* a day old. When my husband got home he saw the box of doughnuts on the kitchen counter, and as I walked downstairs and into the kitchen, I saw he'd just taken a bite from one of the apple fritters. "How is it?" I asked. "Stale," he answered, looking at the inside of it, "You can tell this is old." His answer was to microwave it, but I kind of think if I buy doughnuts from a local bakery, they should be fresh and I shouldn't have to find ways to make the food palatable. read more

I love this hometown bakery. The staff are friendly and the bakery items are out of this world. I especially like the frosted sugar cookies.

I was not impressed with Ida's at all. Their prices were through the roof. Their treats were small and they were dry! I tried several things (cookies, doughnuts and other treats). I was genuinely disappointed with all of it. Want something great? Much better prices, large, moist doughnuts, breads and treats. Head to Steenstra's Royal Dutch Bakery just up the street. read more
