I've been consistently impressed with Rise in my five years here in GR. I have not been dedicated to anything like vegetarian or vegan exclusively, but I was raised with a whole lot of alternative food options and what's so amazing how absolutely yummy everything they have on their menu truly is with less of the bad-for-you stuff. Sure it's a little pricey, but you're going to pay more for premium crafted fare. They also have an awesome little patio hidden in the back, which is just delightful on the nice days that we have in the spring and summer and fall in Grand Rapids. They're very convenient to the Zoo so you can include them in making a day out of your excursion on West Fulton. The coffee beverages are top-notch and the baked goods are right there with them. Rise is a highlight of the John Ball hood. Now, this might not be the place for thin-skinned MAGA b*tch-boys with fragile egos and issues -ahem- compensating... but for grownups with regular-sized brains (and other parts) who love an amazing local shop with values that are shared by the city and neighborhood around it? Spot-on. More places like this, and few like union-busting Starbucks, etc. Three cheers, and five stars! read more

Meh. Nothing too special but nothing too crazy terrible. I don't have any dietary restrictions so the fact that this is all gluten free & what not doesn't make a difference to me, but I can see how it would to others. I had to repeat my order like 3 times for the barista, my friend ordered two chocolate covered strawberries and got 4 & also had repeated her order a few times. It was also very cold in there. Rise is such a cute spot for a quick bite to eat. All their food is gluten free and vegan, and everything I've tried is super tasty. On my most recent visit we stopped in before heading to the zoo and got a couple seasonal drinks (Nola cold brew and a raspberry matcha) and the avocado toast. The seating area is a bit limited but very cozy. They have so many tasty looking pastries, cakes, donuts, and more. Our drinks were refreshing and delicious on a hot day. I loved the raspberry matcha - it was the best matcha I've had in the area since returning from Japan! Super smooth and slightly sweet. I don't order avocado toast out that often, but their was so good, with the perfect acidity to balance the richness of the avocado and on perfectly toasted bread. Parking can be a bit of a challenge in this area, but we were able to find a spot on a side street as it was pretty early in the morning. read more

We've ordered two cakes from here now, and both times have been disappointing. The cakes were loaded with frosting so much that it felt like there was more frosting than cake. We asked for a marble cake, but it was barely marbled at all, as you can see in the picture. We also specifically requested that the sides be decorated with ribbons and some creativity, but both times the design was plain and unfinished. For the price point, the cake itself is very mediocre and on the dry side. We really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt after the first order, but overall, we're very unimpressed. read more

Loved the oatmeal cream pie - by far our favorite! The strawberry donut was great day 1, dry a day old. The peach tart was hard and dry but great almond glaze. Cutest little coffee shop and bakery! It's right near the park so it's a great place to go before or after a run/walk. The interior is really beautiful featuring custom art on the walls. Visiting GR this weekend and went to Rise with one of my bestie, who is gluten intolerant. Oh my word, I didn't know GR could taste so good, and well...normal! That part of town is a bit unassuming, but this place is a gem. I had some sort of Chai donut, with amazing glaze, and a buckeye. Really one of a kind vegan and gluten free bakery! It's outside of downtown Grand Rapids. The coffee shop is located inside the bakery and share the same checkout process. We visited from out of town and this was a must stop and try spot from numerous tik tok videos for gluten free foodies. I tried the lemon poppy donut hole, an Earl gray donut hole, peach yum tart, oatmeal pie, buckeye, and sea salt bagel. The oatmeal pie was a bit dry as others have mentioned. The bagel was a bit too salty for my liking but the texture was fantastic. Buckeye was also a little dry. The donut holes were delicious. My favorite was the peach yum tart! I will go back just for that! Service was a bit eh... kind of felt like we were bothering them by being unsure of what to order which ruined the experience a bit. What can I say? If you're someone with dietary issues, you're not used to having options and when you do have them, it can be a bit overwhelming. Or maybe just chalk it up to hipster vibes. Wow oh wow! This was a dream place for anyone with allergens or anyone just wanting a good bakery! They are gluten free, vegan, amd and soy free! Thr shop is small so not crazy amount of space unless you come early. However they had so many choices and a huge amount of stock that always seemed to keep refilling itself! I have never seen a gluten free plCe regularly add baked items on a weekend. The choices were all unreal and they had a small menu, which unfortunately did have some out of stock items. A very stylish/cool vegan and gluten free bakery on the NW side of town, very close to the zoo. I finally made a visit to their cafe after receiving cake for my birthday and using their cupcake mix purchase at Harvest Health. Parking: super challenging, the back lot only has 3 spots, so if nothing is available there, they encourage street parking Space: very well decorated, fun murals, plants - it's small though. There are a few tables to eat at inside or you can go out back to their patio. Food: delicious! For anyone who dreams of gluten free pastries- this is it! I'm not vegan, but did enjoy their cashew cream cheese and normally I'm not a fan or alternative cream cheese. The cinnamon roll which is a square also was moist and very sweet. They have plenty of other pastry choices including cookies, donuts, their version of pop tarts, and many coffee options. Price: what you would expect for GF/vegan treats- more expensive than their glutenous counterparts. but not outrageous, but adds up quickly! Accessibility: would not bring a stroller unless camping it outside with a second adult. I wore my baby into here. They are very family/kid friendly though and I saw lots of little ones enjoying the treats here! If you have your heart set on a certain item, I'd come early ish. I went around 2:30 pm, and they were fairly cleared out. I was so sad not to get a cinnamon roll. Did try both kinds of donut holes available that day, which was cinnamon sugar and classic chocolate. So good. Surprisingly, I liked cinnamon sugar better. Both both had great textures. Steps away from the John Ball Zoo is an old building with a mural outside that reads "Coffee Bar & Bakeshop." Inside, you'll find a coffee bar brewing Squibb coffee and gluten-free baked goods that are so good you have no idea they are gluten-free. Stands outs- pop tarts! My raspberry pop tart balanced the dough, frosting and the slab of jam inside well. It was delicious! My latte was well made from quality beans. The space has four smaller tables along the front windows, a table that sits four people and smaller tables along the outside sidewalk. Inside, there are outlets and strong wifi. The first time I had their oatmeal cream pie I was in heaven! It had been given to me by a friend, and so when my hub said he would go get us some today, I was so excited!! We live about 1 hr away, so a 2 hr drive total. Their prices are not cheap either, but that's what you get with gluten free, dye free, dairy free... Et all. My hub bought 6 cream pie cookies & 3 cinnamon rolls- with a tip, we were in about 60$ When my hub got home I couldn't wait to eat one but honestly I couldn't have been more disappointed- IT WAS SO DRY! nothing like the first one I had. The frosting seemed like there was less than I had before as well and didn't help the dryness. I immediately had to drink something to refresh my mouth. It felt like a waste of money & a waste of a 2 hr drive! Not wanting to leave a bad review without asking about it, I called the store. There was no manager to speak with and they told me I could call tomorrow if I wanted to speak to one- so I asked the woman who had answered about the cookies and explained what I wrote above and asked if they are normally dry. She said they aren't supposed to be dry, but that she'll alert the bakers that they need to monitor the temperature. She did tell me she was sorry that I had that experience, and told me to have a good day. For like 7$ for each cookie plus 2 hrs of driving- for what we got, I doubt I'll ever return. read more
