I then said, "Hi!" they both looked at me and continued to ignore me. no greeting, and I've never been here, already so unfriendly and unprofessional. the short haired girl complimented my outfit, after saying thank you the Asian girl said "she was talking about us", brown hair girl said, "I know, that's why I said something". I then had to continue to wait, while they still ignored me, and told them both what I wanted. no responses, the Asian girl was individually bringing orders to customers and me, she just puts it on the counter and doesn't even say anything, my boyfriend had to point it out. Good food, but the person who came out to bring our food was very rude. When you spend over $65 on breakfast for the whole family, you definitely expect and deserve a better experience. it's paczki day so why not review rise today since i waited in a longggg line for vegan paczkis. The first Rise dessert I ever had was purchased at Bridge Street Market which has an amazing selection of vegan treats. I had a cookie sandwich which was two chocolate chip cookies with frosting sandwiched in between and half dipped in chocolate and sprinkles. I will say I am not the biggest fan of their frosting... it is very very sweet and has an almost coconut/fake like flavor which i know coconuts is used in a lot of vegan treats but i've had way better tasting vegan frostings. one thing i did really appreciate about the cookie was there was no calorie information printed on the packaging... wow... this was such a relief for me. the second time I had a Rise dessert, my boyfriend ordered a custom cake for me for valentine's day. like i said before, frosting is not great but i really enjoyed the personalized message on top and the faint strawberry flavor to the cake. he also pre-ordered the valentines chocolates but i guess they ran out and he couldn't get them. wow i was so sad... i would love a dang vegan twix, snicker, etc. the third time i had a Rise dessert was paczki day. now the paczkis were so dry... maybe because these were gluten free as well. the boston cream filling had the weird coconut flavor. and the powdered blueberry one just wasn't sweet enough. i want to love rise because everything looks so pretty and there is so much vegan variety but it's just a miss most times. i really want to give an A+ for effort and inclusivity though. maybe i'll keep trying things. read more

For folks with gluten issues (and dairy and egg allergies): this is THE BEST bakery I have been to (and I have tried a lot of places). The plethora of choices of bake sweets made me giddy. I tried the apple fritter, blueberry lavender donut, "fun tart" (a pop tart remake), mostess cupcake, oatmeal cookie pie, and a raspberry zinger. Everything was amazing (not just "good for a vegan/gf version"). I also had the veggie bagel sandwich - delicious! The cafe was so cute and it was just so nice to have a breakfast spot the hang in where I could anything on the menu. I really do appreciate the concept of this place so much. There are tons of food options for people with specific diets. The tea selection is great! I had, I believe, a cinnamon plum tea? And it was incredible. I was, however, kind of disappointed with the little quiche that I got. I reluctantly spent the $9 on it because I hadn't eaten all day, and wouldn't have had time to grab something after my meeting there. The crust was flaky and tasty, but the filing started out pretty gummy, and then just got crumbly as it cooled. We had to sit in the little greenhouses outside, which were totally cute! ... but very cold. Our table had super wobbly legs, so my friend's coffee actually spilled everywhere at one point. The heater inside wasn't strong enough to heat the drafty space, and there wasn't much leg room with the precariously wobbly table in the middle. One of the Best GF and V bakeries we've ever visited. Absolutely unbelievable pastry treats, hot chocolate, cake pops, Apple Fritters, donuts, and more. The selection: I was torn between getting a smoothing bowl, a muffin, a scone, or a curried chickpea pot pie...AND it was only 8:30am. [They have many more options than this available.] I went with a muffin and not just any muffin, a Strawberry Chocolate Chip Muffin. I asked if I was able to get it warmed up, and the barista (she was very kind) did. [I'm guessing they don't get requests to warm up their baked goods very often, because she wasn't sure if they'd be able to.] My muffin paired with a house coffee = I was in working-paradise. The muffin itself had a moist inside, crunchy outside. It wasn't too sweet, too filled filled with strawberry's or chocolate chips. It was just right! About the place: The baristas up front were very friendly. Rise has very cute/trendy deco, not a ton of seating, but if you're willing to share a space with strangers it's all good. They use reusable/non-disposable straws (yes!), offer Vegan & GF options, and everything looks delish. I'm rating this during COVID times, which means this was an order-ahead, curbside pickup. I selected a variety of baked goods because I just wasn't sure what they'd taste like being vegan. I ordered a lemon blueberry donut, chocolate glazed donut with sprinkles, apple fritter and a cinnamon roll. I also ordered an iced oat milk miel (they have Squibb coffee). Upon arrival, I was impressed with how quickly I was assisted. All I had to do was pull up in front (only one car ahead of me), roll my window down and state my name. The barista then went inside for maybe a total of 3 minutes and quickly came back out with my beverage and box of goodies. I will tell you though - that box had to weigh at least a pound or two! I was unsure what to expect as I'm not a big connoisseur of baked goods when it comes to the vegan and gluten free variety. I think that keeping in mind is key because I wouldn't choose these over regular non-gluten, non-vegan items. I think that the cinnamon roll had a nice flavor but the density was just too much for me. The lemon blueberry donut was for sure my favorite because there wasn't an "expectancy" for it to compare to anything I've ever had before. The chocolate glazed donut just felt like there was a lot of chocolate covering a not as enjoyable dough. The apple fritter I haven't tried yet, but I'd imagine it's similar to the others in density. I give 4 out of 5 stars because it's not my personal cup of tea but I also think they do an amazing job with the ingredients that they use to make it work. They're very pretty baked goods at that! A local, and die-hard coffee snob, recommended this gem with a charming back story. Over a decade ago, the owners began making vegan and gluten free pastries and hot drinks to meet their own needs. What began as passion is now a community staple. Other cafes even purchase their baked goods to supply the ever growing demand for healthy & eco-friendly fare. You feel that story as soon as you walk in. It has an intimacy to it and the warmth of walking into a friends' living room for coffee. They offer several plant-based milks (oat & almond) as well as the traditional variety. The chai tea latte with oat milk was rich and smooth, as well as the perfectly spiced and sweetened. Curious about their plant-based take on a comfort food favorite, I decided to try the "chicken pot pie." I was warned by the barista it would take 15 minutes to properly warm, which only increased my curiosity to try a dish that was so carefully and methodically heated. I'm sooo glad I did. The jackfruit "chick'n" paired wonderfully with the savory, hearty filling chock-full if peas, carrots, celery and sauce. The crust, the 'raison d'etre' of any savory pie, offered all the satisfying flaky and buttery texture and taste of a pastry without gluten and butter- quite impressive. Went here for a quick snack when I was in town visiting from California. Look, I am all for self-identification and inclusivity. My sister is gay and I'm an Ally. The cashier was super rude when correcting me on another employee's pronouns when I answered her question and referred to the employee by saying 'She helped me'. This gorgeous coffee shop and bakery is located just East of the John Ball Zoo in this cute neighborhood. It was made exactly how I like my fritters: crunchy, crispy outside and pieces of apple inside. 2. Cinnamon roll: so good. My only complaint was that it wasn't big enough....I only say this because I wanted more of it! 3. Moscow Mike donut: I've never heard of this flavor before, and as a Moscow (and American) Mule fan, I had to give it a try. It was delicious - I loved that they had candied pieces of limes perched atop the donut. 4. Chia seed and matcha fruit bowl: Wow! This had everything I like in it: chia, matcha, strawberries, almond slivers, star fruit, kiwi, blueberries. Wow so good. It was $8, so a little steep, but I'd splurge again for that symphony of healthy goodness in my mouth! They offer water in a self serve jug. The dining space is small - 5 or 6 tables. Went for the first time today, and it was AWESOME! I just recently started eating gluten-free, and it was so amazing to be able to order anything. My husband and I tied the Magic Bar, Apple Fritter, Blueberry Scone, and Oatmeal Cream pie. All were delicious and we didn't miss the gluten at all! The apple fritter was my personal favorite, laced with chunks of apples and delicious caramel sauce. Hubby loved the oatmeal cream pie and magic cookie bar. I do feel a little silly in being the first to review when I forgot to even order any baked goods on my first stop in, but to be fair to me, I had just woken up and their granola bowls sounded spectacular. I got an orange bowl (which I think was frozen pineapple, mango, OJ, and turmeric blended + granola + coconut + berries) and a rosemary tea latte. I also had a sip of my friend's lavender tea latte and a small bite of one of the cupcakes. Everything was so delicious! The only reason I didn't go back for some baked goods after my breakfast was because it got super busy after my friends and I got our orders. Staff was super friendly and seemed well staffed considering the grand opening was yesterday. The one major downside to this business is the size of the space. There's 4 small tables in the 2 big windows that seat 8ish (chair on one side, bench on the other so you COULD squeeze more); today 3 of those tables were taken by people with laptops. There's a bar with 3 chairs. There's a large table with 6 chairs; thankfully, people seemed okay to share this. In the back, there's a "standing bar." While traveling home from up north Michigan, I made a specific stop to pick up some gluten free goodies. The biggest draw for me was that they had GF pop tarts. I did purchase those along with oatmeal Whoopi pies.... a few cookies etc. to be 100% honest I found the pop tarts disappointing. A lot of dough, little filling and not nearly enough icing on top.
