I attended the Breakfast house with my extended family for the last day of our family reunion. We were initially a party of 10 that blossomed into 25 people and the Breakfast House accommodated all of us with no problems. The service was quick for the size of the party we had with very little mistake that tend to happen with larger parties and if there was a problem, they were prompt to fix the issue. Now let's get to the food... If you're looking for food actual soul, I'm talking about the food that makes you close your eyes or do a little dance, this is the spot for you. The food here shows you the distinction of what soul food is supposed to taste like by reminding you with each bite how flavor is the most important piece to any dish. You can see the seasoning and if you cook you understand the importance of that statement. All the food was good here and my family was singing many praises about it and I'm sure if you go you'll do the same. read more

This review is based on one visit on Saturday 9/5 - I dined in with family. We got there a little before 10am and were seated immediately as it was not busy - it became busier as we were finishing our meal so if you want to avoid a wait, earlier is better. I ordered the chicken and waffles and wow wow it was delicious! 10/10 and perfection in my opinion. Mywow wow got the Belgian waffle and the breakfast burrito - both shared their food was good, but nothing amazing or something they would come again for. The waffle came with a butter that did not melt and had an odd consistency, like it had separated and frozen. Overall the services was alright. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive in the beginning, but seemed to struggle once it got busier. It took some time to get a bill and we were supposed to get a free slice of cheesecake because it was someone's birthday, but it never came and it didn't feel worth it to mention. I would come back to try the shrimp and grits or to get the chicken and waffles again! Not sure about other food, but plan to try this spot again once they've been around a little longer. read more

What a cute place!! This place has all of the good vibes as you settle into some comfy chairs. We sat at the bar for brunch and what a great choice that was. We had Meaghan as bartender server and she was wonderful. Super personable and on top of her game. The chicken and waffles were delicious, but took some time to get the green onion off of the plate for my picky self :) Other items consumed where the chorizo hash and avocado toast. All of these items were super delicious. Oh and we can't forget the mimosas to make the brunch complete. Definitely worth the stop to fill your bellies. We also had quick chat with the owner as they checked to see how our food and service was - it was great to have that personal touch as well. read more

Tried out this new spot over the weekend and here is how it went: Walked in and the host greeted us. I asked how long the wait for two people was and she said 10 minutes. I asked if there was a waitlist and she said she was on spring break last week and didn't know but to have a seat. We stayed seated for ten minutes before being approached by another lady with an iPad. She put our names down and we waited another 15 minutes before getting seated. Once we were seated our server came over to greet us. She vented about how busy it was that day before even taking our orders. I asked for orange juice and she came back with coffee. Because everyone seemed stressed and flustered I didn't say any thing and drank the coffee anyway and it was decent. My partner ordered their RumChata espresso martini. It came out with 18 beans on it which made it difficult to drink. He said it was more RumChata and could not really detect much espresso. My partner ordered the ham egg and cheese sammy which came on toasted Texas toast. He liked it and it had a nice cheesy vibe. Came with a little bit of hashbrowns. I ordered their eggs Benedict. As soon as the server put my plate down she said "Oh wow, I don't like how that looks" and walked away. Didn't offer to have my meal fixed or replaced or refunded. I couldn't believe she said that. I ate what seemed edible enough but was pretty unhappy with this meal. I had hoped a benedict would be a sure fire good meal but i was wrong unfortunately. Maybe they had an off day and maybe they're still working out the kinks but this experience was pretty terrible for us and I felt like sharing. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

I rarely leave reviews like this, but the service we received was unacceptable from beginning to end. When our server, the woman with locs styled on top of her head finally came to our table, I said, "I'm so happy to see you," because we had already been waiting. Her response was, "I'm not happy to see you." She then walked away and did not return to our table for approximately 30 minutes. During that time, we could see her standing around talking with other guests and drinking. She was not tied up serving other tables while we waited. We could physically see her socializing while our table remained unattended. When she returned, she told us that we were required to spend at least $120, order two drinks per person, and that she would be adding a 20% gratuity. She then began explaining what automatic gratuity meant. I told her that I have worked in the service industry for nearly 20 years and understood what auto-gratuity was. She responded that I was being rude, told me she did not have to serve us, and essentially stopped waiting on our table. The problem was that we had already ordered drinks and placed food orders. Some of our food never arrived. She did not return to check on us, take additional drink orders, or bring our bill. I eventually had to get up and go to the bar myself to order drinks and go to the food pickup area to try to get our food. I also tried to speak with a manager. I could see that the restaurant was extremely busy and that the manager was actively running food, so I tried to be patient. However, more than an hour later, we still had no server and were literally unable to leave because no one had brought us our bill. I ultimately had to get up and find the manager myself, and initially I was told that she was too busy running food to speak with me. The food unfortunately did not make up for the experience. The fries had such a strong fish taste that they tasted as though they had been fried in the same oil as seafood. What bothered me most was the overall treatment. The establishment was hosting a large Black event, yet the restaurant appeared severely understaffed, with what seemed to be only a couple of servers handling a very large crowd. At the same time, guests were being told about minimum spending requirements, two-drink requirements, and automatic 20% gratuity while we struggled to receive even basic service. I have spent nearly two decades in hospitality, so I understand busy nights. I understand being short-staffed. I understand getting overwhelmed. What I do not understand is speaking disrespectfully to guests, refusing to continue serving a table after orders have already been placed, failing to deliver ordered items, and then leaving customers unable to even pay their bill. And to be clear, my issue was not simply that our server was busy. We could see her drinking and socializing with guests while we were waiting for service. Meanwhile, I had to leave my table to get drinks, track down food, find a manager, and eventually figure out how we could pay our bill. If an establishment is going to accept and host a large event, it needs to staff appropriately and provide the same standard of hospitality those guests would reasonably expect on any other night, especially when automatic gratuity and spending minimums are being imposed. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst service experiences I've had in a very long time. read more

Same owners as Rio. I liked Rio. I don't like the Breakfast House. The cofffee was really good, service was nice. I had the Chorizo Hash. Too greasy for my liking but my friend enjoyed hers, so maybe just me. read more

We came on Sunday for our first ever visit to this restaurant. We were seated after about 10 minutes. Yes, they were busy. It took another half hour before we were able to order our food. Several tables arrived after and they got their meals. I complained to the staff person who was bringing out the meals that we were waiting over an hour for our food. He said he would check. Lo and behold our order came out quickly. 2 of our 3 orders were incorrect. At that point we were too hungry to care but I was really disappointed. We call this place a "once and done". read more

I had really high hopes for The Breakfast House, but unfortunately this visit was a letdown. From the start, the host was rude, which immediately set a negative tone. After being seated, we waited about 50 minutes for our food. When it finally arrived, my order wasn't even correct. I ordered the chorizo hash, and it came out without potatoes and absolutely drenched in grease it honestly looked like oil was pooling on the plate. When I asked about the missing potatoes, the waiter admitted she forgot to mention they were out. A few minutes later, she came back saying they had more, but what I received looked like frozen, store-bought potatoes--not what I expected at all. To her credit, the waiter was very apologetic and tried to make things right, which was the only positive part of the experience. Unfortunately, everything else missed the mark. The orange juice was $4 for a very small cup, which felt overpriced for what you get. To make matters worse, the table next to us ended up walking out because their food took so long. By the time anyone noticed, their meals had been sitting there for at least 25 minutes. Overall, the long wait, poor communication, and disappointing food quality made this an experience I won't repeat. read more

Great people good food, give them a chance, I am sure that they are more than willing to hear suggestions too Would love for them to compete with other breakfast places that offer, gluten free options and maybe farm to table items on menu read more

The chef must have had a bad day this past Sunday. I ordered chicken and waffles. The waffles were cold and the chicken was overcooked, almost burned. I order this every time I come. I was highly disappointed. read more

Food was delicious and came quick, both servers working our party of 18 provided amazing service.

I am in Grand Rapids for business and found this place which had great reviews. Arrived and they said it was a ten minute wait, but didn't take my name. Everyone else that came in after us was asked for their names. We almost got skipped, but I had to speed up. After we were seated, it took a while for our drinks to get to the table. The waiter/waitress (couldn't tell which) was not too attentive to us. We finally got to order, but that took a while to come to the table. The shrimp and grits was amazing. As was the Bloody Mary. Overall the food was awesome, but the service (Fabi) needs some training and experience. read more

First and last time we will visit. I had the eggs benedict which was flavorless. My husband ordered a breakfast burrito and was served a burger. It took them 20 minutes to make his burrito and that was after we had already waited 30 minutes for our food. The burrito was flavorless as well. We also had to beg for refills on our drinks. There are too many good breakfast places around to try this place again. read more
