Sad to say I never made it to Basalt when it was around and only made it to Asada on the last ever day in their space on Wealthy. Honestly it was an incredible location for a space and had such a great vibe inside. My best friend is a regular at the restaurant and we're hoping to see them more in smaller capacities like when we saw them at the Fulton St. Market. Overall, the food was really good. I like the concept of fast-casual dining without the need to have a server. I think it allows things to feel more casual and allowed for me to be more willing to eat there (obviously in other circumstances lol). I got the horchata hot cakes with some of the papas with ghost sauce. I thought the pancakes were GREAT and more than worth it for the price. I was surprised how large and fluffy they were. The flavor was great without being too sweet and none of the flavors being too overpowering. My friends got the breakfast sandwiches and chaichata drinks and absolutely loved them. My friend loved her drink so much she got two within the span of us eating. I know it's a hard time for local businesses but I'm hoping there are more ways we can still see them around. read more

To be honest, I've only been here twice but I wanna change that based off the last time I went. Our food was just so good, I had forgotten how delicious their menu is. Different from the last time I was here but we were told to find a seat upon entering and that when we were ready, we could order our food at the counter. I looked over their menu and found lots of good breakfast taco options, the breakfast burrito I have heard is great, but what really caught my attention was the biscuits and gravy. I was feeling quite ravenous this morning and got the full order for $11 and a side of bacon. They had a table close to the entrance with extra menus, clean cups, water jugs, hot sauces, silverware and napkins. Seemed like a help-yourself vibe which I grabbed everything we would need for our meal. Our food was brought to us rather quickly and my bf ordered the breakfast bowl with scrambled eggs and sausage. He told me it tasted so good and he loved that he could make his own tacos with his food. He let me try one of the hashbrown rounds and it was perfectly crispy! My biscuits and gravy were phenomenal. The biscuits were so fresh and the gravy had a really nice and comforting flavor to it. You could get chorizo and mushrooms in your gravy but i went with a traditional sausage for my protein. My bacon on the side came in a tiny dish but I ate all four pieces haha. Once we finished, there were some bus bins under the same table with the silverware, we placed all our dirty dishes there and cleaned up after ourselves before leaving. I honestly felt so content leaving there and can't wait to return. I really appreciate the ambiance in there with the beautiful plant life, the lights on the ceiling, and cool decor in general. The staff was also SO NICE! Wins everywhere. I also noticed people coming in for takeout which is good to know in case I don't feel like dining in some morning. On the recommendation of several friends, I met a friend at Basalt on a Friday morning at 8:30am in October. Since it wasn't crowded, we walked in and got a table right away. The menu is Tex Mex. I ordered one Executive Taco on a flour tortilla and the "Zaddies," which are basically loaded tater tots. I enjoyed my food. Nothing was life changing, but everything was solid. My seven-year-old daughter liked her two pancakes. My latte was good. Service was excellent! Wow, asada packs a punch with flavor. We came here because of the vegan options for our friends but stayed for the delicious burrito and sauces. Big enough to split, we loved the chorizo burrito and tots. The green sauce and chimi mayo were insanely good. Cold brew coffee delicious. Crazy nice staff that made sure we loved our food. I hadn't been to Basalt in a while (except for the Wikiwiki Poke pop up, which was amazing) so I stopped in recently to get some food. They have table service so I was told to choose anywhere I wanted to sit. The vibe inside is cute and comfortable and I felt welcomed. The menu is Tex Mex with a focus on breakfast/brunch, aka my favorite meals. I went all out and got a ton of food: the taco plate (comes with two tacos and a side), the breakfast burrito, and an espresso drink made with a mix from Let's Stay Home, a local business. My food didn't take long to come out and everything looked so good. I tried the tacos first - I got the mommie dearest and the tru royale. You get a choice of either corn or flour tortillas, so I went with the house made corn tortillas that have a lot of flavor. I especially loved the super crispy hash brown bites as my side. Both tacos were seasoned well, a bit greasy, and so delicious. I barely had room for any of the burrito (I took the leftovers home to Nate), but if you're a breakfast burrito fan, you have to try this. It's stuffed with scrambled eggs, chedar-jack cheese, papas, rice, and your choice of protein, and then they crust the outside with cheese. Wowww, it's so good - and huge! You could definitely split this if you wanted to - but you might not want to. I also loved the specialty drink I had, and check their monthly features as they're always introducing something fun. Instead of getting the burrito as normal, I honed in to SMASH a brunch styled double-smash that was totally smashed off the charts. I no longer visit Basalt. For some context, I was a habitual customer of Basalt. Maybe not a frequent flyer, but I would eat at Basalt ~once a month for the past year or so. I'm a big breakfast person- I frequent many breakfast establishments in Eastown typically 3-4 times a month (think Brown Butter, Wolfgang's, Terra Bagel, Scorpion Hearts Club, etc.). I loved Basalt. They really appeared to be a hole in the wall with decent wait staff. When I visit, I usually get the same order: two breakfast tacos, a beverage (that isn't just water), and their drop biscuits. Don't get me wrong, the food at Basalt is good, albeit a bit overpriced. However, my most recent visit went poorly. I entered the restaurant around 11am on a Sunday to find that Basalt has transformed from a full-service restaurant to a fast casual restaurant. It is not apparent when you enter the restaurant that you seat yourself; the "instructions" are off to the side of the entryway. Unlike most fast casual restaurants, the Basalt customer is not naturally guided to the ordering station, which should be front and center, but in Basalt's case, is lost in the mix of the kitchen and the bar. From my initial confusion, the singular wait staff, aside the owner, shouted at me to order from the counter. I recognize the wait staff as an employee I see regularly here, so I'm not super annoyed at being shouted at. Maybe he recognizes me and it's all a part of the employee's character? I set my things down as far from other customers as possible, as to maximize my time alone, ensure there was a seat for me in this newly "fast casual" business, and dig my wallet out from my bag, and went back up to the counter to order. From this point on, I am not sure if I PO'd the owner, wait staff, or what, but you are not obligated to tip at fast casual restaurants, especially if you are expected to bus your own tables and pay prior to the food arriving. Tipping is based on service, not on me ordering. So naturally, I didn't tip, because I saw I would be cleaning my table off myself. I finish my order, collect my order flag, and sit back down at my table. Wait- I forgot my utensils and my complimentary water. Of course I forgot them, they're next to the door when I walked in, not next to the ordering "station" (for lack of better word). I stand back up, grab my utensils, water pitcher, and glass. After an expected amount of time, my breakfast tacos arrive. About halfway through my food, my drink arrives. It was regular horchata. I'm not sure it should have taken longer for the drink to get to me than the food, but I don't know how horchata works, so it isn't my place to say anything. The wait staff takes my flag-- "Wait!" I state I am still am waiting for my drop biscuits. "Oh, yes. I will find those for you." Continued, I finish my plate of tacos and my drink and am finishing my drop biscuits. Surprisingly the drop biscuits have a bite to them, so I am sipping down a good amount of water from my water pitcher to keep my eyes from watering. Suddenly, a mother-f--king 8 top walks into the tiny Basalt restaurant. It is a whole-a$$ family. And obviously, they can't find anywhere to sit, it's 11:30 on a Sunday morning. Y'all hit the church brunch rush. 'Should have came sooner or later,' I thought to myself. Apparently, the wait staff didn't think the same as I did, so he started grabbing my plate and water from me. "No you don't have to bus that for me. I'm just finishing my water." "We're in a rush and I need this seat." The waiter was obviously kicking me out to make room for their newly arrived 8-top. I didn't even argue. My food is gone and my water was rudely taken right out from under me. What the heck. ETA: Glad you took the time to read my review! When a larger man approaches a woman in public and rushes them, they often fear harassment. So I left, as I didn't want to have a man up in my business. The argumentativeness of the owner just WREAKS of men/male privilege. But if you want, you can watch your cameras through and you'll see me say something along the lines of "You don't need to take that, I can bus my own dishes." But I'm not about to physically grab something from somebody else. I'm not rude. Additionally, I have no problem with the food being priced as it is. Good food should be priced well, but compared to other breakfast places in the area, the food is more-highly priced. Guess the food doesn't match the area. The decor is also very homey and friendly. The breakfast tacos are definitely the best in the city, but my partner had the biscuits and gravy and those were incredible too. Everything was so flavorful and I like that they were unique but still had a solid nod to traditional Mexican tacos. I think the chorizo was my favorite. Added egg to it as well. we were moving this week so that means i packed away the dishes and got to knock some more restaurants off my list. 2 things I love... breakfast and mexican food. i always go for a breakfast burrito when they're on the menu somewhere. i've seen nothing but good things about basalt and i knew they had many vegan options so it was must try. my boyfriend and I both got the taco plates which come with two tacos and a side. you can get breakfast tacos, regular tacos, or one of each. you can also make almost any taco vegan($1up charge) . I got the vegan mommie dearest and the vegan cyclops and hash-browns for my side (which came with two super crispy hash-browns). my boyfriend got the queso mac n cheese for his side and loved it. it looked so good with the hash-brown pieces on top. i enjoyed the sauces on the table ( 2 srirachas and a spicy ketchup). they suggest you dip your hash-brown is spicy ketchup and it was very good. I also like how you order on your phone by scanning the QR code and they bring it to you. we also got a cherry berry limeade which was good. it was not super sweet which made it very refreshing. i've wanted to try basalt for a while and have even see them often with a table at Fulton St farmers market. This Texan visited a childhood friend in GR and Basalt was a must try from her. She was definitely right about Basalt - it's comparable to the Tex-Mex breakfast tacos in Houston. I had the mushroom breakfast tacos and a chorizo-based taco. Let me tell you, while I liked the chorizo taco, I LOVED the mushroom tacos. There were a variety of mushrooms - not just one or two. I thought I tasted bella, shitake and oyster. So for the vegetarians and even carnivores, the mushroom taco was superb!! While the space was compact, they were able to seat our party of 5 in decent time. The space is welcoming, vibrant, and nd on a fun strip in a cool part of GR.
